Record Breaking Heat Comes To San Antonio

but we start tonight with the heat advisory that's in full swing right now it's only the beginning of the hottest week of the summer so far we anticipate in fact some record-breaking heat chief meteorologist Chris suchan outside right now how's it feel Chris oh my gosh guys it's awesome heat out here today and I don't say awesome in a good way I mean this is the hottest day of the summer so far here that is uh underway I'm outside here of course at our station right there on 410 you see I'll do a traffic update for you you see it's stacked and packed here heading eastbound on 410 but it is a blazing hot commute this is our trusty thermometer here from the for Zone weather center now for the sake of honesty when I came out here about 10 minutes ago it left the studio where it was in the 70s you can see now it's pushing over 100° that's just in about less than 10 minutes that temperatures climbing water sunscreen light colored clothing preferably not long sleeves a hat I mean you get be on top of your Texas heat safety awareness game with this kind of a conditions we're under an excessive heat warning let me show you the maps right now and you can see the temperatures here in just a second but that's the warning through Sunset it is back again tomorrow which is actually hotter than today but check out our four Zone weather Watchers oh 106 in Alamo Ranch from Chris Barbosa Ellen uh in San Antonio has 107 we have 105 in shirts in Northwest San Antonio I mean it is brutal out here across the area and here it is an excessive heat warning tomorrow which will be the hottest day even hotter than today in our area 104 to 109 that will be a record today we're not breaking records in San Antonio tomorrow the record will fall here and then then it will get better we're going to talk about relief and I do have rain chances including tomorrow that we're going to talk about in Greater detail guys and in just a bit back to you in the cooler Studio I was going to say also not protect themselves in fact they sent out an alert urging people to take caution stay hydrated as just mentioned and look for the shade yeah we are going out live now to news fors Ethan Trejo we're comparing the heat difference in the Sun to the shade yeah well Jonathan Mandy we're here at one of the sittings cooling sites this is here at Ward Park and you can feel the heat really scorching the UV rays are bouncing off all of the sidewalks truthfully it feels like you're cooking but we didn't want to just tell you about it we actually wanted to show you so here's what we're going to show you here's a picture we took earlier with our temperature gun just outside of our studio you can see the sidewalks temperature measuring out to around 146 and when you're looking at the street that temperature jumps up to 153 but take a look at how much of a difference a little bit of shade can make that temperature drops significantly to around 117 so making sure you find shade should be a top it an outside right now to give us a little bit of insight into this brutal heat chief meteorologist Chris suchan with the very latest hey Chris hey guys I tell you what it is the real deal today I mean we've had hot every day we're used to hot in Texas but today is one of those days you're like oh yeah it took it up a notch here uh officially this is our 4 Zone weather uh thermometer and now understand that I'm not in the shade I'm in the sun I'm sitting on top of black top here so it is a little contaminated with the temperature uh but it's showing there about 108 109 and there are parts inside the 410 Loop here around Bear County that are around 107 to 108 so blistering hot as advertised you see the commute is moving along here slowly hopefully we don't have any breakdowns any engine overheats or blowouts with tires all things you worry about with uh heat like this also you know when we talk about heat safety awareness please look before you lock your vehicle in this kind of weather all right because that car is an oven and let me show you here an example at 104° here you can see how quickly your car or truck heats up in fact in an hour it's up to 147° so please look before you lock your vehicle and do the 5-second rule when it comes to walking your dog too if you can't keep your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds it's too hot for their little paws 102° that asphalt temperature could hit over 160 all right here we go 104 right now in town but Al Mo Heights to Castle Hills up around the rim 106 107 the temperature across our four zones here you see that blistering hot weather we hit officially 105 today and how about this tomorrow it's even hotter than today but the good news is unlike last year this is not for days and weeks on end you get through tomorrow better days ahead in fact we're going to do a long range outlook here on rain chances and how much cool it's about to get guys in just a bit all right our curiosity is Peak thanks a lot for that Chris all right the heat as you just saw beating down on the city of San Antonio right now so if perhaps you are outside be sure to find a cool place we have news for San Antonio's Ethan tjo at one of the city's cooling centers telling us how you can keep your family safe in this heat well that's right guys we're here at one of the city's recommended cooling site this is going to be the Ward Park Splash Pad we actually spoke with a doctor today from university health who says that keeping your body cool with water like this this can actually protect you from stopping your body from absorbing all of those harmful UV rays it kind of helps in kind of relieving the temperatures are kind of dropping the temperatur some uh that's why like when you're out in the pool you really can't feel the day being very you're in the water and then the water acts as a good conductor to kind of release some of that heat so Le McCarthy says that it's important to watch your internal temperature anything above 104 is considered dangerous she also says that hospitals do typically experience a spike during the hotter months so if you're out there in the Sun be sure to watch out for some of those symptoms of heat exhaustion now those symptoms do include dizziness NAA and sometimes even confusion we have more on whether on the difference between heat stroke and heat exhaustion up on our
