JOINING US NOW IS MARK SANDERS. HE IS THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF THE CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY SERVICES AND SUPPORT. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING WITH US. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. OKAY. I SEE YOU'RE OUTSIDE. SO WE GOT TO TALK ABOUT THESE COOLING CENTERS ALL ACROSS THE CITY. IT'S 4.30 RIGHT NOW. WHERE CAN PEOPLE STILL GO TO FIND RELIEF FROM THIS HEAT. SO OUR DFS COMMUNITY SERVICE CENTERS ARE STILL OPEN AS COMMUNITY, AS COOLING CENTERS. OUR SENIOR CENTERS ARE STILL OPEN UNTIL 5:00 PM AS WELL. OUR GARFIELD COMMUNITY SERVICE CENTER WILL BE OPEN UNTIL 8 P.M. THIS EVENING IN ADDITION TO OUR DFS LOCATIONS, THE CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARIES HAS SITES OPEN LATER ON THIS EVENING, AS WELL AS THE CHICAGO PARK DISTRICTS, SO THERE ARE QUITE A FEW OPTIONS OUT THERE FOR FOLKS. I UNDERSTAND YOUR DEPARTMENT IS ALSO CONDUCTING WELL-BEING CHECKS. HAS THERE BEEN AN INCREASE IN REQUESTS AND WHAT TYPE OF CONDITIONSE YOU FINDING PEOPLE IN? SO THERE WE ARE MONITORING THE WELL-BEING CHECK REQUESTS. AND SO WHEN WE GET THOSE, WE SEND A TEAM OUT JUST TO CHECK ON THE INDIVIDUAL, DO A CHECK OF THE TEMPERATURE WITHIN THE ROOM, MAKE SURE THAT THEY GET ACCESS TO WATER OR SOMETHING TO HYDRATE THEMSELVES. BUT YOU JUST FIND INDIVIDUALS WHO MAY HAVE THEIR POWER OUT, OR THE AC MAY BE DOWN. SO WE JUST SEND TEAMS OUT THERE JUST TO MAKE SURE INDIVIDUALS ARE OKAY. WHILE THEY'RE CHOOSING TO STAY INSIDE. YOU KNOW, MARK, WE OFTENTIMES TALK ABOUT WHO'S MOST VULNERABLE HERE. WE KNOW SENIORS ARE DEFINITELY DURING THIS EXTREME WEATHER. HOW IS YOUR DEPARTMENT WORKING TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE SAFE. SO WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL LIKE A SENIOR NEEDS SUPPORT, THAT'S THAT'S WHERE WE MOBILIZE OUR TEAMS TO GO DO IN-PERSON VISITS JUST TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE DOING OKAY. AND SO MANY TIMES WE KNOW THAT SENIORS DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE THEIR HOME, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE LIKE THIS, NO MATTER HOW HOT IT IS OR FEELS ON THE INSIDE. SO IN THOSE SITUATIONS, WE ASK THAT NEIGHBORS, FAMILIES, FRIENDS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE INDIVIDUALS THAT MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING THIS, WE WANT TO CALL 311, AND THAT WILL START THE PROCESS TO GET A TEAM OUT JUST TO CHECK ON THE INDIVIDUALS AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS DOING OKAY. YEAH, VERY IMPORTANT TO CHECK IN ON THEM. WE SPOKE WITH THE METEOROLOGIST FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE, A LITTLE BIT EARLIER. THEY SAID TODAY IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST DAYS OF THE YEAR. SO THAT MAKES ME WONDER WHAT'S BEING DONE TO HELP THE HOMELESS IN OUR CITY. SO WE ALSO HAVE OUTREACH TEAMS THAT ARE, THAT GO OUT TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CITY JUST TO DO SIMILAR WELL-BEING CHECKS, PROVIDE WATER. WE ALSO HAVE TEAMS THAT ARE GOING OUT OVERNIGHT TO GO TO DIFFERENT ENCAMPMENTS AND CHECK ON INDIVIDUALS WHERE WE KNOW THAT THEY ARE REPORTS OF INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE LIVING OUTSIDE. SO WE HAVE A FULL COMPLEMENT OF RESOURCES THAT ARE TOUCHING EVERY ASPECT FROM OUR SENIORS TO THOSE THAT ARE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE LIVING OUTSIDE. BUT OUR HOMELESS OUTREACH PREVENTION TEAMS ARE ARE REALLY OUT THERE IN THE FIELD JUST CHECKING ON INDIVIDUALS, PROVIDING THEM WITH WATER AND HELPING TO ADDRESS ANY OTHER NEEDS THAT THEY MAY HAVE.
