Chicago Bears Just Found Exactly What They Need

the Chicago bearss might have exactly what they need what they need might be an absolute road grader to cover all the injuries that are happening on this offensive line and also to provide some security at a really needed spot and that player that I want to talk about is offensive lineman Jerome Carvin so the preseason is a perfect time for end of the roster players to make their last push to make the team right at the very least they can put out tape that keeps them on the practice squad or get them back into future training camps that's what happened last year and uh one player on the Chicago Bears who's taking advantage of that is once again Jerome Carvin I mean I think us as fans we should keep an eye on this guy he was an undrafted free agent from Tennessee played for the Kansas City Chiefs originally last year he got in some work for the Chiefs in the preseason but was let go the Bears added him to their practice squad late last season signed him to a Futures deal when the season ended and he entered Camp deep down the depth chart but he's clearly Rising I mean just recently this last preseason game he actually played at Center over Doug Kramer I mean that's he is the third this is the third year that Kramer's been with the Bears there are people calling ker to even start last season it's kind of telling of what player that we might have here if Carvin was playing ahead of him he led the offensive players in Stamps with 35 I'm going to take all this with a green of salt though the Bears play Four preseason games this year the the extra one is the Hall of Fame game so they weren't really running out their starters they weren't really playing all the top players Carvin he got some play Above Kramer and that says something LED all offensive players and snaps in 35 snaps he not only played center for 24 snaps but the theme of this team is versatility right he slid over to guard for 11 snaps so I mean overall I think this is exactly what the Bears need just another piece that's versatile that can come through in a pinch haven't had quality depth with any type of Versatility in such a long time and that's why Ryan Bates was added that's why Cole mchelton was added to primarily compete at Center but guess what we have an injury at Right Guard Nate Davis again right Ryan Bates right now has slid over to Right Guard Co Shelton is at Center and that just shows the absolute necessity of having versatile players so so continuing Cons considering oh I can't talk considering that these two Ryan Bates and Coleman Shelton bigger additions neither of them suited up for this game I would say the chances of Carvin making the roster might not be super high but the Bears have three more preseason games Bates and Shelton will only play so much there's a really good chance that we see carving continuing to lead the team in snaps as Bears give him full second halves of games moving forward and he can really establish himself on this line and really show the Bears who Kansas City saw when they brought him into Camp I'm going to talk about that in just a second and also like that he can be a big asset on this team as injuries continue to mount up on this Troublesome offensive line if you're like me I'm starting to get a little worried Carvin at the very least he makes the Squad becomes a notable depth player and the bears were so thin at Center last season so thin and I just think this is a development worth watching so let's let's kind of look back on the type of player he was in college and also coming into the draft and I want to go to the story on pfm this is kind of detailing Jerome Carvin was considered one of the most versatile offensive line Lo a lot of same just played 59 games 42 starts for an absolutely great Tennesse volunteers team that was a good squ at 65 321 pound and there's kind of a team connection here he was a teammate of Rook last year our number one pick last year Darnell Wright familiar face that's really good depth is definitely needed at guard as well on our line and kind of the meat of who he is as a player once again pfn lames acoss interior Jerome one of most versatile prospects in the N draft I wanted to be careful to actually read the the headline on this story when he was coming out and the important part of this is that says across the offensive line that's really interesting he was one of the most experien veratile prospects to come out of the 2023 NFL draft the bear signed him for next to nothing at zero risk he might be an asset that is sorely needed I'm going to close that down check out that pfn article on Jerome Carvin look it up so if we're looking at this 60 starts across five years this is where the versatility comes in this is why he's intriguing 21 starts at left guard 17 starts at Right Guard five starts at Center sounds promising right he got hurt before his rookie season and the Chiefs they were unable to find out for sure what they had in Carvin but about Carvin joining KC great depth there long-term starting potential then that's a direct quote from the team they recognized that he was a prospect but they were really high on him and Nick Jacobs continued with this Carvin is always willing to help in run blocking and pass Pro he's always looking for work he has the size he has the anchor to keep opponents in check at the line of scrimmage and also he has good lateral quickness for his size and is able to get his hips around if needed on a reach block and that's a really good thing too and um to continue on top of his versatility I've already detailed that his main TR coming out of the combine was the fact that he's absolutely outstanding in the screen and RPO game I mean great instincts to deceive Defenders and the mobility to get out in front in land blocks and to hold those blocks with lateral ability and that's that's huge because Caleb Williams isn't Justin Fields but he's going to be constantly moving around in the pocket and being mobile Caleb is mobile and we're going to take advantage of that as a team Carvin could be a great fit with that I mean he excels once again at holding blocks and moving laterally and this is the main attribute that leads me to believe that he might be more than just a practice squad a warm body type on this team and also as he gets more playing time in this preseason could be an absolutely great depth piece with the versus a ility to play every single position and we've also got some things happening right if you guys watched Hard Knocks last night you saw Theo benedet doing the splits I thought he was a guy that was going to provide some quality depth here I was really looking forward to watching him in the preseason but he's going to be out four to six weeks so this kind of brings a player like Carvin perhaps back into back into the shuffle as a possible depth piece and this is straight from Carvin he's in an interview he shared how this happened playing all these roles at Tennessee so on top of these starts at both guard positions and Center he was just he was actually moving across positions in game in the same game and this is something a little bit different this is something that's not fully a common thing and this is to hear straight from him some games I was at Right Guard and went to Center some games I was at left guard and went to Center I mean just being able to be available for my team whenever my name was called that was my biggest thing just making sure I was ready and prepared for whatever they asked me to do that's how I got my if you need the links let me know further from Carvin there's definitely some challenges for sure when he's breaking down the technical nuances required to see seemingly effortlessly switch across the interior that's a rare skill you've kind of got a flip it in your mind that's probably the least bad bit about it muscle memory you can be so set on playing Right Guard then you've got to flip everything to the left and that's that can be so tough then going inside to Center making adjustments making the calls telling guys what they got to do when you're at Center owning the offensive line and he continues with you're the quarterback of the offensive line when you're at Center being confident two is a huge thing for versatility and we're looking at a player that went undrafted before signing with Kansas City as I talked about the guy just has some characteristics that could make him an important piece moving forward for the Chicago Bears let's view it as important as well because as I talked about injuries are already a factor right he's missed some practice Jenkins got just just got dinged up again in practice on Nate Davis well like I said he's doing Nate David Nate Davis things like being unavailable constantly and I just want to take a second and explain what an injury settlement actually means it's not what we think and this is how the Bears acquired him very easily when technically they shouldn't have so the Kansas City lost a player due to this Rule and how it's executed so anything like when something like this comes up it's great to understand it and this is from Over the cap contrary to what some believe a settlement it's not a negotiation of price it's really a negotiation of weeks so when a minor injury occurs a a determination is made for weeks that the player will miss during the injury so the options would be to hold the player until he's healthy enough right to be released or to have the two sides agree right away as to the amount of weeks that the injury should keep the player sidelined so in other words the chief's IR designation that ended carin's 2023 campaign but the rookie likely believed he'd be able to play again that season so hence that's the negotiation that was happening so the Chiefs upon negotiating they simply paid him as if he was on the roster for the agreed upon weeks Carvin was then not allowed to per the rules to return to the Chiefs until the length of the settlement passed plus six weeks so here's in essence what happened his negotiated injury time span was over Kansas City was hoping to keep him but during that six week waiting period the guy just wanted to play so the Bears were able to kind of poach him and sign him while he was in this limbo period I think it's a great move and there's zero risk and it's yet another way that having a smart GM helps GM Ryan poles was fully aware of this negotiating period he wanted to add more depth and a versatile depth piece to the line so he took advantage of it with zero uh risk and I just love Ryan Po's is our GM and I just like this guy's attitude and I want to leave you with something that Jerome Carvin had to say football is football playing left or right whatever it is you're an interior offensive lineman after that you just got to play ball so I hope this works out I hope he'll be playing for the ball for the Bears very soon it's been fun
