Greg Olsen Breaks Down The NFL vs NBA Athlete Debate, Who Threw The Tightest Spiral and Tight End U

Chicken Debate we were just talking about chicken Greg uh how how many chickens you think are killed every year not the money chicken though but actual chicken chicken chickens how many chickens are killed every year yeah how many do you think [ __ ] I couldn't even put a number um 200 million 80 billion 80 billion I don't even know how they make that many chickens how many chickens you think you eating in your lifespan oh whole like if you add it up to like the whole chicken like if if if I don't know if if if 14 wings were one chicken okay uh [ __ ] thousands yeah I agree me too probably probably double the Black Culture I've had my I've had my fair share of uh I've had my fair share of wings I went to school in Miami so oh okay yeah yeah yeah yeah they they got chicken fly after practice uh our after practice snack on the bus ride back was uh was Popeyes yeah see that's what I'm saying wrong that's all I'm saying dude but that's a good question my how do they make them though are they are they are they uh reproducing like are chickens having sex or they are they're I guess they're laying eggs like what's what's going on over here you're diving really deep into a subject that I don't know [ __ ] about yeah me neither we were just killing time talking about it bro we're just wondering bro we're just curious over [Music] here dude welcome to the show Greg Olen I mean I guess I should give you prop a proper intro cuz a proper intro do them Greg Olsen Joins the Show right all right let me do you right all right from the U to the pros to broadcasting's final boss he did more with the cane in Miami than Freeway Ricky Ross the only allpro in the booth with an Emmy to win it could be a full house and we still couldn't find Olson's twin thinking you could cover him is downright insulting Seahawk Panther bear Beast Legend Greg Olson welcome to the show welcome to the show my God love that one bro that was that was fire God that was fire that's light that might be one of the best intros I've ever had stop bro don't even say that but people might be wondering they're like oh pevp with Rome basketball podcast Greg Olsen football player how does this make sense but to me I think it makes sense in a billion different ways one of them I mean the hardware is right behind you this guy is a guy who's made his transition from being a stud first round pick to a broadcaster and a part of the media which I think 100% resonates over here with this guy Pat Bev uh this is a guy who is uh intertwined with the bar stool community in a lot of ways uh I mean you and I played trivia against one another in Las Vegas um and we don't have to talk about how it went one way or the other uh but you've been uh so deep in the in the bar stool world for so long and uh I think that there's a ton of ways where this crossover makes sense so I think we really want to soak up some Transitioning from Playing Career to Media games specifically about the broadcasting world how you found yourself where you are right now and uh I think we could start off with congratulations on the Emmy bro that's a a fuckingg congrats that's fire well I I appreciate it and as Pat knows I mean I I think so many guys just assume hey you know you have a good career when you're done playing what's the next best thing you either coach or you get into media and I think everyone just assumes that trans you know that transition is easy and seamless and one day you just get done playing and every Network and every media Outlet in the world calls you up and says hey you know come come to a pod come do a show come be on our desk call games whatever and um you know the reality is you as you know firsthand Pat like it's a lot of work you know it's it's it's hard to transition into that world it's hard to find your voice it's hard to find you know the right opportunities there's so many different Outlets that guys can do you know you can post your own show you can sit behind the desk you can commentate games and for me it was commentating the games that I found pretty quickly was was my path and you know I was fortunate when I was playing my last couple years um in 17 and in 19 you know in my by weeks when everyone else was going on vacation and hanging I was going I was going to call games as a current player on my bye Fox was fortunate you know I was fortunate they gave me those opportunities so it was something I was kind of laying the foundation on before my last season in 2020 where I knew you know once my playing days were over I had laid enough of a foundation have some opportunities with Fox to do that right out of the game and go right into the booth and you know after trying a lot of different outlets and different things that a lot of people never even saw on TV because they weren't real big shows calling games kind of became something I thought I could pursue and that's really where I've put the bulk of my uh my interest since obviously since I retired so what what made you good at that I gotta ask this question so it was a statement made um it was a statement made about uh I think Austin Rivers made the the statement about uh NFL players yeah what NFL vs NBA Debate was it playing basketball or basketball players playing football yep I've I've played football for like um 37 seconds I was a wide receiver uh got through Pass mind you I'm freshman I catch ball middle how make move cracked like cracked like like painful hit I get up I take helmet off I take uh shoulder pads off I look at my mom come down from the stands I don't like this sport anymore so from that standpoint the physic and I'm and I like to think I'm probably one of the most physical [ __ ] in the NBA so Ron I didn't want to touch a football ever again like I wasn't a fan of it I didn't like it I didn't like how I felt I didn't like how the helmet went like P against my head when I fa I didn't like none of that [ __ ] so I was so I stopped playing football and I kind of graduated to basketball and that was my basketball that was my football career so I think it worked out pretty well for you so to Austin Rivers comments it's a give and take both ways obviously you know you take some of the best athletes in the world you can do it but I I'm I'm talking about the batch that's underneath the the best athletes just the the regular Joe Blow role players and the regular Jo blow role players in the in the NFL and the and the In the comparison can you think they can compete and vice versa yeah so so obviously that was a big storm and I know football guys all came to the rescue of football and basketball guys you know everyone kind of goes to their sides of the of the ring and wants to just battle for their sport you know the reality is whether whether people want to accept it or not with football and I know we all want to sit here and say oh it's the hardest sport the reality is outside of maybe quarterback you can be later to football than you can to basketball to baseball to any of the more skill dominant sports right I could find a lot of really good NFL athletes I mean Calvin Johnson Justin Jefferson I mean and again maybe these guys are hoopers in their past so I'm just coming up with like six5 long really athletic football players that if you put them on a basketball court they would look like they belonged right so that's like my thought the problem is if you don't have a lifetime of skill development dribbling shooting passing like the only way to get good at those skills is by doing them it's no different than a guy you're the best athlete in the gym and you're gonna go off for the baseball team but you don't have 15 years of swinging the bat I hand pitching throwing mechanics Fielding like you can only athlete your way through so much of those very heav dominant Sports so again quarterback being the exception you're not going to just show up one day and be the quarterback but those really highlevel basketball guys right and again LeBron's an easy one right just because everyone knows he had his football background but like there is no doubt in my mind those highlevel athletes in the NBA I could teach them to be a free safety I could teach them to be a corner now the physicality to your point if they just can't handle any of the physicality then it's a different story but from a skill set from the running jumping the the skill requirements of football are just different than they are right there's the toughness component there's the physicality the the helmet everything you just said all of that is real but I could come out there and compete my ass off and and practice every day but like I don't have 20 years of ball handling you know I don't have 20 years of shooting like you just can't simulate that so I think football is the sport you can be the latest to the better athlete you are the easier that transition is and yeah I think there's no question in my mind I could probably find I don't know if 30 was the right I think that's what Austin said I don't know if 30 is real but I Pro I could find 10 I could find 10 basketball players that could go make an NFL roster I I I I think that's totally realistic yeah I think that you even look at across different sports like uh Hogan or like uh he was a lacrosse player like uh Milada was like a a rugby player like this guy didn't find football until he was in his 20s and then now milata is like a he's an all proo player because he had the athletic skills to play tackle yeah and you just you don't hear like you just don't and maybe there are the stories you guys would know better than me but like you just don't hear the story of the sixa senior in high school freshman in college who just one day goes you know what I want to learn basketball and all of a sudden he's an NBA Allstar like you just can't you don't have the time to build up that lost time of not playing and developing those skills so football-wise if you are an elite athlete run jump big long tall Russell Westbrook and LeBron like all these crazy athletes right Anthony Edwards like he's a probably a great example of a guy playing now like if you don't think he could be an NFL free safety tomorrow you're lying to yourself I mean the guy is a athlete he's 6'4 I mean and and that's the other point that people don't understand about basketball is like every great athlete you see play playing defensive back wide receiver for the most part they're like 62 right like a 62 defensive back is like a a good siiz DB a 6-2 basketball player like you're you're guarding the point guard like you're you're the one the threes and the fours are 68 there's no one you know outside of a couple defensive lineman maybe or an offensive tackle there's nobody in the NFL that's eight outside of you know a tackle or something so I don't think people understand the the physicality and the um the athleticism of these basketball guys and and that's that's the precursor for playing football outside of Tight End University quarterback shout out to te shout out to shout out to te shout out to te shout out to tight u i mean it's uh it's every year every year it's massive I feel like you guys are doing something different with with tight u in that uh all the best players at the position are coming to Nashville every year and blowing it up everybody is doing like I mean what who it's it's you KD and Kelsey yep and I feel like you're I mean that's that's exclusively studs right there that's literally your Super Bowl matchup at Super Bowl match up and an Emmy winner like run running things that's kind of sick honestly basketball should have something like that where it's like all the all the point guards are in like camp together and they're like exchanging knowledge like is that kind of the basis of it that you can kind of pick up game from one another this is the technique we're using this is how I'm uh running this route or like this is my blocking stance technique type of thing yeah so it's our fourth year doing te we do it down in Nashville um George and and Travis and myself we kind of started this back in 2021 and the idea was just to get couple tight ends you know a bunch of them live down there George Spends His off seasons in Nashville and a bunch of the guys Liv down there and and you know I had just retired and he's like hey why don't you to come down we can work with some young guys and just do like a little mini couple days of tight end only and you know then it grew to 20 guys then it was 30 guys like man we're we're on to something here like everybody you know as the more people hear about this the guys across the league really want to be a part of it so you know we'll have 80 to 90 guys when it's all sent done last year we had like 85 tight ends only NFL guys only we do film work we do film classroom stuff we do field work we have like some cool you know outside the classroom extracurricular like fun we'll go out to the bars you're drinking beers is is what you're talking about you guys are getting drunk and and you guys are GNA love obviously not not a Shameless plug we're obviously proud of it with h with Sharman you know obviously tight ends Sharman toet paper so obviously they're the no-brainer sponsor of all this so they're back that they're the ones who allow us to even do all this we fly the guys in we put them up we pay for it all so we couldn't do it without all of our sponsors and obviously there's a lot of Bud Light drink so it's uh it's it's a pretty fun it's a pretty fun deal um and really just you know you're talking 85 guys and you know from the Travis keles and the George KD of the world all the way down to guys that are undrafted rookie free agents that are just hoping to have a career so like everybody in between there's something for everybody and uh it's just been a blast all these years to do it and um we're excited for uh for June to come around and and do year four hey so Rong you watch a lot of football I'm obsessed okay cool so okay so we can agree on this the tight end position is a lost art until you get to the playoffs right regular season it's the flash it's the running it's the quarterback it's the wide receiver it's the sick catches but when you get in the trenches and you get in the playoffs games man they throwing it to the biggest target every time easy is that fair to say Mr olon yeah I I think it's real I mean you look you look at the last couple years not only the Super Bowl winners but the the teams that lost in the Super Bowl almost every single team that has been in the Super Bowl in the last couple years has had a a a significant you know predominant NFL tight end I mean just this last year obviously worked out great with George and Travis they've already met one this the second time they've met in a super so it's uh you know it's a position that I think is just continuing to get better and you know it goes back to our to our basketball conversations I I I think years ago 10 years ago these six4 kids they wanted to be basketball players right they saw themselves as a six4 shooting guard in high school and no one could convince them to go out and play you know basketball no I mean no one can get them convinced to go out and play tight end right you're not fast enough to play wide out you're kind of a bigger body Especially You know guys like me right like we weren't going to be star receivers I'm 6'4 65 in high school maybe in the old days I want to be a basketball player and then you realize very quickly your basketball future is over the second High School and now I think a lot of these people are starting to say you know I'm a 64 65 athlete I'm big I can run I got good hands tight end is cool right like tight end is a position that it's not just the slow wide receiver anymore or the extra offensive tackle like this is a prominent position that teams are starting to feature and it's been cool because like in my 14 years in the league I came in and there was like a handful of Shannon Sharps and Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates now it seems like almost to your point almost every good team team has a tight end if not multiple tight ends and that's been like a pretty Siz MC shift for the position you know really in the last you know 10 15 years I think that we're almost seeing like a Renaissance of the position specifically in like the last couple drafts like uh Sam leaport uh canade mayor uh Musgraves and then this year Bowers like these are all guys who are studs who are going to get a ton of targets who are going to be the focus of their offense and I mean I I don't want to give tight end you credit for it but like how many of those guys came through you guys and like it is is there some thought that the honing of the skill set that you guys are doing is something that is now translating onto the field as far as how these guys are being used oh I think you're spot on I I think the the ability to access information you know it goes back to your to your question we started with about like former players entering the media like what you guys are doing here and and readit and just the ability to share information share the players's Mind through media and you know teu we're doing it through the camp but it's all really the same thing right in the old days what we did inside our locker room or our tight end room only was spread throughout the league if someone from our room changed teams or got traded or got cut and signed somewhere else or whatever like it really just stayed very incubated in one spot but nowadays between the ability for guys to share you know Instagram videos on Route technique or blocking techniques or drills offse training or you know our camp you know te like the ability for guys to share the wealth with other people throughout the league and say you know it's not a threat to me that you that George KD shares with Travis Kelce you know tips of run blocking or tips of Route running vice versa it's good for all of us right like the better the tight end position does across the league we're all going to ride that wave on the way up so I I think people have really wisened up to to exactly that point where you know it's cool to share it's cool to help other guys get better it you know the better their careers go it will indirectly impact you at some point and I think the ability to share information's never been higher and the willingness for guys to help each other out and grow the position grow the sport whatever it is I don't think it's ever been better or or or easier than it is now and um I think guys are taking advantage of it and and wrong it's the it's it's so Sim the basketball like obviously the game has improved than it was I don't know 10 years ago and it's improved 10 years before but when you're when you're an athlete you're you know football basketball baseball um you know if you're an athlete the competition comes first right so getting lost in the competition you might I don't want to [ __ ] train with that guy I don't want to [ __ ] hang with that guy this [ __ ] he's my [ __ ] he's in my same position I see him they thr he he gets the ball all the time I'm a run running team I don't get the ball all the time I don't want to [ __ ] train train with Trey young he going to know my weaknesses and I don't want to train with Steph Curry and he's going to know my weaknesses and try to use it against me right but now you see a lot of guys training together and the only thing when you train together that just boost up everything okay cool I know his weakness but he's going to try to make that a strength now you know it forces you it forces the athlete it forces the the skill to get better with your own competition instead of being in the gym and on the field by yourself so I totally agree with that one I want you to get me a start your starting five of bar stool personalities that you've Olsen's History with Barstool enjoyed o over your time starting five wow that's that's good all right so you know so man I remember back in the day A buddy of mine from Boston got me on to bar stool when it was just day it was just poroi you know they I think they had just expanded to Mo um I think his name was Philadelphia yeah yeah so they they hadn't done big cat yet so they had KFC in New York so I know he's kind of an OG there so big cat I mean um so Dave KFC I know is an original there from the New York I know Philly obviously didn't that closed Maurice kind of closed that then big cat so I was in Chicago when Big Cat launched bar stool Chicago so that's all those famous videos of you know poroi lost the bet when the Blackhawks and the Bruins were in the in the Stanley Cup and the Blackhawks won and he had to play the whole kickball game at my charity thing in Grant Park in full hockey gear and I know that that video has been shared so obviously big cat that's how they found Eddie isn't that video how they like found Eddie or something like that like uh there's so many stories out all these I can't keep it all straight but right that that kickball bar stool kickball weekend is one of the alltime uh one of the alltime videos I'm trying to remember um oh I just saw him the other day and the bar stool offices in Chicago when I was there my boy who slept in and and it was like his first weekend and he missed and I'm um you're not talking Jersey Jerry are you no no Ben Min fights fights fights fights yeah fights he he slept in almost got like fired from there's just a lot of good stories but yeah man I I remember when it was just ptoy and it was just like a handful of athletes that followed it and thought it was funny and it's uh why does it appeal to athletes like what is it about bar stool that like as a consumer not even to like partner with bar stool like why what what what appeals to athletes I think the thing that you again it's hard for me to speak for everyone I I think the thing over the years right everyone always talks about the authenticity and and listen I think what's cool about our world and I think what's cool about media these days is you can find within the world of bar stool or you know whatever Media company but in this case bar stool like you can find the stuff internally the pods that you like the Articles the writers that you like the blog posts that you like and you might not care for the rest of it you might not agree with the rest of it you might not like certain guys there but like I think what's cool about it is there's so many different offerings that there's something for everyone and that doesn't mean if you like your pod you agree with all of them it doesn't mean if you like this post that you agree with everything like you can find something that you enjoy I think there's an authenticity I think there's a here's what we are take it or leave it and then it's up to the consumer to say I align with these thoughts and things and I'm and I'm a fan and I follow and I don't align with these stances and I don't align with these pods or these blogs or these things so I'm gonna I'll I'll I'll leave that and I think that's the beauty of it right like it doesn't have to be everything for everyone and I think that's what makes it cool you consume the content you connect with and you relate to and you don't consume the content that you don't connect to and you know I think that you know I'm sure there's a lot of crossover between you guys and big cat and and and PFT and I'm sure there's people that only watch your show and follow it closely and only follow there so like I think that's the beauty of it all and I think they they've done a great job building out the personalities and crossing over to a lot of different demographics of people and fans and I think that's just everyone's just looking for something that they can be entertained by and have a little break from the reality and uh I think they've done a good job for the most part putting that together I'm I'm I'm I'm going back football real quick Locker Room Talk all right talk football a football guy as an as an athlete you sit on the plane you sit on the bus you sit in the locker room you know you kick [ __ ] you have conversation hey man who who's the best shooter you know you go oh man Steph Steph Curry you know you go Klay Thompson you know you you you go guys like that and you guys are locker room who when you played at the time what were like the top three guys that had like the best spiral were those conversations you guys had yeah oh yeah those same conversations are happening in every locker room it's just different story right like I I remember coming out you're like hey who are the best backs right and this is like Adrien Peterson and he is just an absolute monster and he's just he's like a grown man amongst boys in the NFL and you know you're doing all right who's better you know Walter pton or you know Adrien Peterson or who's better Calvin Johnson or Randy Moss right so like you get you get the conversation which I know is huge obviously in basketball yeah topic of conversation but the same things for us you know with this guy have been you know with this with Johnny unit has been able to play quarterback in today's world yeah he definitely could you know and then everyone has their thing so yeah the the comps the who's the best you know wh you know which guy you you know you know James Harrison right the big ass linebacker outside edge rusher from the Steelers all those years like he's one of those guys when you're getting ready to play the Steelers you're like [ __ ] like I got to go up against James Harrison and like so the conversation's around like all right if you had to pick Five Guys in the league that you could say they're not allowed to play in the game before you're about to match up James Harrison if I get a if I get a veto card he's got to sit his ass on the bench he doesn't get to play you know like yeah I think the locker room is the fun right I mean you know like the locker rooms the fun the the the stupid arguments the stupid games the Traditions the camaraderie that's what you remember man that's the that's the fun yeah we we all want to win we're hyper competitive you want to make a lot of money you want to have a great career but like the connections with the guys the [ __ ] in the locker room the back and forth the arguments the fights the stupid things at the when we're getting our ankles taped in the training room the conversations that would would pop up from that are so stupid that in any other context but to us it was like this is super important like we need to flush this out or we can't go to practice you know right yeah that stuff's real and yeah man it doesn't matter what sport you're playing at any level those what if conversations are going on everywhere amongst every group of guys in the world you know who had the best spy roll guys I played with probably came through the tightest ball what does that mean explain that to me yeah so like when you know you hear guys saying like he he can really spin it you ever heard guys say like he can really spin it yeah really spin it means like when that ball comes off his hand that ball is so tight it is spinning so fast okay it like it's like wobbling you know but it's not it's just spinning so tight like certain guys the ball just comes off their hand different than other guys cam was one of those guys he was so big he was so strong and when he threw it that ball was like whistling right and then early in my career I played with Brian greasy now the now coach for the 49ers was Monday Night Football commentator kind of done both media and now coaching for a young guy greasy threw like a super easy ball right point point was always up so like catching a ball ideally for us like you want to catch it around like your helmet right like it's like you got a big like space suit helmet on if I'm running full speed I want to pick that ball off my face mask if I can anything that gets low down by my knees it just gets really awkward to try to run and catch balls that are out of your like cylinder you know so greasy always threw a ball that for the most part hits you in the helmet and the front tip of the ball like the tip you caught was always higher than the back tip so the ball was never diving on you it was never cutting on you it wasn't traveling sideways where it was like a cve ball where it would it always flew straight and so like certain you just get used to certain quarterbacks throw a different ball and you you just get used to what you know but yeah like cam could really spin it I mean that thing was tight velocity firm and like if you didn't get your head around you better have a helmet on because if you didn't get your helmet around especially when he was young and early in his career man that thing was ripping and you didn't get your head around you were gonna get embarrassed because that thing was gonna like stick in your face mask like you know like little giants that's fire to hear him talk about that Pat same question for you though Pat same question for you who as far as as a shoter who gives you that pass where it's just like right in the pocket not even close and and but Paul George is the worst like like with James Harden like a lot of people don't understand with James Harden no matter where you are in the court like so the basketballs they have the lines in them right and usually guys like to line the ball up they like to put you know how you're T put fingertip on black on the line and you just release it with James Harden you never had to fix the laces they came already fixed the only thing you had to do is just shoot it how dides he do that I don't know I don't know bro he's literally one of the best pack but when Paul George he throw that [ __ ] you don't know how fast it is it looks slow but you catch it fast and it's spinning the other way so you got to catch it with a guy closing out on you got to fix it fix it again then shoot it like yeah it's it's yeah James Harden easy Paul George uh Jaylen worse interesting so it's funny long Snappers in the NFL they can make it like on a field goal like on a field goal try or an extra point they know based on how many times that ball is gonna spin out of their hand to the holder they know exactly where to start the lace in their hand like they don't hold the lace with their hand like you would throw it they spin it a little offc centered so when they spin the ball back for the short snap and it gets caught it's put down always with lace is facing away from the kicker so they that is like so to your point it's the same idea it's they can feed the ball to the holder now whether the holder catches it too close to his body or too far from his body the ball spun either not enough or too many times and now the laces are not on Center so if they catch it in the right spot every time and the center snaps it from the same starting point every time they can put that ball down a hundred times in a row and the laces will always be facing the back of the center's butt that is inuck impressive that is impressive like they get to start before the snap and like preset for him to be able to do that and kick the ball off a dribble in real time I I can't even process how that's possible probably the best pick and role player ever it's unbelievable the physicality with with NFL Rules Now vs Then football the way they hit now and I know you played tight end so you were kind of bigger than most guys and kind of you know you can you I mean you you took a bunch of hits and nobody really trucked you nowadays is is is it different now with the with the uh the helmet the helmet Rule and how does that affect game play yeah so it puts a lot of pressure on the defense but it also takes that like back of your head fear you know again fear is going to sound like all football players are playing scared like the toughest football players in the world the guys that are fearless and Reckless and they almost there's still that element in the back of their head that when they go across the middle of the field especially when I first came in the league like there were no rules like you could get literally just get your [ __ ] knocked out like and but now knowing that that Defender he could still do it to you like but he's gonna pay a BigTime fine which is the primary source of not wanting to get you know and then obviously the penalty but the fine is what really gets these guys to change their behavior and so now I'm running down the middle of the field and and and the ball's up in the air and I got to go up and attack it and I got to go get it and I'm exposed I know I could take a hit in the shoulder and the hips and the and again it's not going to feel great but like knowing that more likely than not this guy can't just come defenseless receiver and like just lay me out like he used to you see a lot more balls thrown into traffic you've seen a lot more balls thrown into Tight Windows in the middle of the field where maybe 1015 years ago that quarterback's not making that throw he doesn't want to put his guy in Jeopardy like the quarterback's job is to protect his Target right we're like we're like dogs you throw it I got to go get it I don't get to pick and choose nah I don't feel great about that ball that that guy was gonna hit me like you throw it I gotta chase it like that's my job but now I gotta trust the guy throwing it that you're not going to lead me into something I can't see lead me into something where now I'm really exposed and I'm taking shots in the ribs or in the head in the back like so there is a trust factor between the quarterback and his Target where he's going to trust us that we're going to go do some some tough things every once in a while and bail out a bad throw that's our job and we got to know you can't ask me to do that a hundred times because I'm gonna die right so there is that give and take where like I got your back but Dam like I got you all day buddy but you gotta have me too and and the more trust you have with that guy and the more Rapport you know like hey I'm
