We did it baby!!! MSU defeats Maryland

all right we did it we won everybody Michigan State with an impressive 2724 win over Maryland and I thank you guys for checking out this video make sure you like And subscribe if you like And Or democrats and uh so today just feels kind of like Deja Vu because I remember four years ago I made a video about Mel Tucker impressive victory over Michigan after a disappointing loss to Rutgers the FAU obviously it was a win but it was a little bit of a disappointing win and my tone reflected that last last video I made saw that eight or less less than eight less than eight people viewed that video so uh there's room to grow there's all the room in the world for this channel to grow and uh make sure you like And subscribe because you're going to be getting in on the ground level of this incredible YouTube channel where we talk about everything Michigan State Sports and I've really dropped the ball uh talking about the Lions or pistons and I do apologize for that because that was one of the things I promised however the last four years we haven't M missed much with the Pistons can't say that about the LI Lions they've had an incredible run and believe me we will talk about it soon but um this was Jonathan Smith his first Big 10 game and it was uh really an impressive showing they really cleaned up a lot of some of the mistakes they made against Florida Atlantic and that's what you that's really what you like to see when you're building a program uh rapid Improvement um what I really liked was that you know Michigan State late in the fourth quarter well things weren't looking too good they were down 2417 but they kept their they kept their head on the game they stopped him forced him to kick a field goal that would have put the game away but field goal missed and Michigan State had new life even after um I think the drive before was disappointing because they had a nice Charles Bradley interception and they didn't do anything with it that was very disappointing but that defense even though they had to come right back out in the field they just came back and you know they uh they had a short they had a shortterm memory situation there and uh I believe it was a 77 yard touchdown for Nick amarish we're gonna talk about him in a bit um so that blew that the misfield goal you know was a domino effect for Michigan State especially that Nick Marsh touchdown from Aiden CH and you know it really takes it does take grit you know kind of like what the lions got going on to be able to go down there and do that and uh a lot of times we see in these game where team's up late and they just start they keep giving up first downs Michigan State did give up a lot of first downs but they never quit playing and eventually they were able to force him to a field goal and uh they set themselves up for a for a positive for something positive to happen you know because when when no one who kicks the field goal is ever uh it's never automatic obviously so you force him to kick a field goal and you just see what happens and uh having some sweet tea and it turned out great for Michigan State in that scenario so they did have a little bit of luck in this game but I can't over emphasize how they stayed in the game and you know as PJ Fleck would say they just kept rolling they kept their orders in the water um not that we're trying to be like Minnesota but we're trying to get some sort of identity for our team so um and I think uh the I think that obviously shows the level of buy in for the players that's the most important thing especially seeing success early on is very important even if it's just a 50/50 game like Maryland you know it's not like we went out in beat Ohio State but you start seeing little you know you start seeing uh you know you start winning a few of those 50/50 games pretty soon you're ranked in the top 25 and pretty soon you're progress is you know looking to take that you know keep taking the next steps and uh giving itself room for growth you know you're not when you lose these kind of games early on your program is stagnating you know everyone is anxious when are we going to start winning but when you get these wins early um you know it speeds up the timetable and I think that that is um again that's just that's just 101 when you're talking about building a uh football program another thing I think that is interesting is that Michigan State's last few coaches um have been able to see success in their first year and I really think that shows you how High the Talent level is at Michigan State um and I I don't I don't mean that ironically you know you look at John El Smith he was able to come in have a winning season his first year same with the Antonio Mel Tucker technically didn't but we don't really count that Co year um and I think Jonathan Smith is now with this wi is on track to having a bowl season and uh still a long ways to go but you know it all comes down to these 50/50 games and building confidence you know they're probably looking at at least three wins after next week with uh pry A&M that should be an easy game I probably won't watch that game um or react to it unless it's uh unless it's just uh ridiculously close which it shouldn't be but either way um I'd say Aiden child you know he still got work to do but today's game it was a nice it was a nice step forward for him three touch touchdowns three interceptions one of them was kind of a freak interception uh with him being sacked the ball just kind of ended up in the defender's hands so I think they called that interception but um you know he did make two I believe two interceptions not in the Red Zone one of them was in the Red Zone but one of them was a little bit mid2 yard line so I was going to get into that in a little bit when I'm talking uh want to go into what what the bad was the bad was for this game when you talk about like The Good the Bad and the Ugly but um yeah nice be bounce back game for child and it's pretty clear that um I don't know if it's an accuracy issue I think it's more of some of the decisions he makes he still needs to work on uh one of uh he he fired it in there uh in a couple danger situations a couple today that could have been intercepted so again it's just going to take time for him I think it's really I think it's really tough for guy like childes you can tell he thinks that he [Music] can that he can make a play you know that he's a playmaker and he can make a make something or nothing all the time um so I do feel like there's times he forces it still but I thought this was a step forward for Aiden child and obvious viously he showed that big playability with that past uh couple times uh to Nick that Nick Marsh pass and I believe there was another long there was another very long pass I believe to Nick Marsh or um Glover onor Foster can't remember which one that got him down almost to the red zone so the fact that they have that deep ball is actually a huge uh benefit for Michigan State it's really going to open up a lot of things for their tight ends Jack fing um munis Michael munis um there's some other guys um I do have to I don't think I I didn't put this on my uh I thought Nick I thought uh thought Nick Carter had a nice game today over four yards of carry and same with K uh KRON Lynch Adams just to check out the box score we have um Nate Nate Carter not Nick Carter uh 11 carries for 59 yards 5.4 average then you had KRON Lynch Adams 10 carries for 46 yards uh very nice balance there um uh and both of them you know over four yards carry and that that's you know that's that's really it's really a good place to be as a running back you look at Maryland they struggled to run the ball less than three yards a carry and they had to rely on their passing game and be honest it was the turnovers that kept Maryland in the game so um it was overall a positive game but yeah there's definitely you know if Michigan State doesn't have those turnovers you could be looking a double digit win here so but this was still a uh a massive V victory for Michigan State uh no one was picking them to win this game um I wasn't even entertaining the idea I was just thinking I'm going to watch the game and hope for the best and that's what happened um Nick Mar though I'm almost I was I've almost been afraid to talk about him because you know there was a lot of hype on him him and you know I was just worried about him being a bust today he had almost 200 yards very reminiscent of uh um Cody White's brother not his brother but uh Ricky White um who played right who was a freshman right after uh Cody white left for the NFL um and he had that massive game we never heard from him again so I don't think that's going to be the case for Nick Marsh whatsoever but uh you know today he looked like a five-star six-star recruit really I mean um again 200 yards of receiving is always an impressive game Ty Felton from Maryland did have a nice game as well 152 yards on 11 receptions a little bit more consistent there I was very impressed with him if you look at Billy Edwards his completion percentage was actually pretty good 26 out of 34 and two touchdowns to one reception um but I think that Aiden Childs you know did have a little bit more of that uh home run threat ability there so that was nice to see uh you know you got jiron Glover 84 yards on six catches Monto Foster contributed a nice 53 yards for six catches and a touchdown uh the touchdowns spread out kind of nice one for each of those guys jack Ving three catches for 25 yards he did have some big catches and even Antonio Gates Jr did get in on the action and and I believe it was in a big spot where they really needed it um so um Antonio Gates still sticking around and I'm hoping he sees an expanded role I believe either Foster Glover one of those guys did have a little bit of a did get shaken up in that game I believe that's why he was able to get some snaps um I did like the uh you know the past two games the run defense has been impressive you know the pass defense has always been elusive for Michigan State but you know it's always nice to have that run defense because at least you know I think that overall that's complimentary football if you can stop the run um I think that really does you know obviously help out your secondary cuz are going to have a little they're going to they're not going to have to play you know as as a perfect game because you know you can um you can tough tough to describe but you know if you if you're not getting a lot of yards running the ball then you know that the defensive you know defensive liabilities isn't all on you so to speak so having a a good run defense I think is crucial for um for improving your secondary as well I didn't see any Dumb Out of- bounds penalties or unsportsmanlike penalties for the defense um also uh another note Darius Sono it was nice to see him in there making some plays um I believe you know he was he was not uh he not starting I don't believe but he looked he looked good out there and he was he looked very aggressive and um I saw he I noticed him on that on there on a couple of nice tackles so um especially when you get a veteran like Darius snow back in you know that can really only be beneficial for your defense and I think MSU has a lot of seniors you know that are really helping to bring along defense right now um and it's going to be it's going to be a little interesting thing once they're gone um because I do think they're probably going to lose a lot after this year um so getting into what went bad for MSU today uh third down defense and Crossing yards that a Crossing RS that was tough all day you know it's not um it's not like exclusively an MSU problem you know a lot of teams will struggle with teams against teams like Maryland with the type of offense that they run um still had a lot of penalties uh it seemed like today was more on the offensive end um and as we said earlier those uh Red Zone turnovers you know cost us some points uh probably enough points to where um we might have won the game by double digits excuse me so you're looking at at least potential six points points if not more um with those two critical interceptions and uh I uh I was obviously I was ecstatic about the win but you know just looking at the B you know there's still still a lot of uh still definitely a lot of room for improvement and uh I think but I will say there's one thing that I think you can say for sure is that the rebuild for Michigan State with this win is definitely uh ahead of schedule if you look at the quality of the win today and like I said I think you could see if they beat Boston College in a couple weeks because uh Boston College did beat Florida State but you're looking at a Florida State team that also lost to Georgia Tech so I think Boston College is still a beatable team if you win that game I think MSU very well could be a top 25 team at least that in that point in time before they go into the gauntlet um where it's Oregon Ohio State Michigan and Iowa um Iowa did lose to Iowa State today so congrats to the Cyclones it has been a long time since they took I know you know being the Michigan State I know how good it feels to beat the the other team from your state so so congrats to the to the Cyclones and uh you know look forward to maybe another winnable game against Iowa and I I'll actually be at that game so that'd be a heck of a game for them to win and I do also think that when it comes to playing Michigan you know this isn't this isn't me trying to Trash Talk Michigan but with how Michigan play today I would have to say that Michigan Michigan State game to me I think that's going to be in a pretty interesting game and uh I don't think I don't think I have to be considered a homer or Slappy to say anything like that so I think that's about all I got for this game you guys um again prayer review A&M coming up if I do watch it I don't think I'm going to do any reactions unless there's a major injury a major breakdown or something notable that comes out of the game which very well could happen um it's always tough in these early games cuz you got to stay healthy but you can't take two weeks off between opponents so you got to get your guys some reps and uh hopefully Aiden Childs gets a little bit more comfortable uh with an easier opponent um again clean up those interceptions you know maybe this is a a game where you get Tommy Schuster into the mix see what he can do um but maybe Aiden Charles can take a few you know make a few more you know take a chance with some more plays because it's uh less obviously it's going to be very it's going to be just about impossible for priew A&M to win this game and uh if they do that'll uh um that'll be probably about as bad if not worse than appalachi and State against Michigan game so I don't even really want to think about that so I'm at about 20 minutes now you guys let me know what you guys thought of the game it was in very entertaining game to watch because it had pretty much everything it had sacks we had long touchdown plays field goals being missed um Field Long field goals being made by Jonathan Kim who has been another guy I haven't mentioned he has been clutch for Michigan State for the past two years whenever he's been put in that position so so uh and again Jonathan Smith this is this is a game where he is solid he works towards solidifying his uh his coaching resume I guess you could say um he really gains a lot of you know he's going to gain a lot of support from Michigan State State fans by winning these kind of 50/50 games early on and you know I uh and I will always caution people you know not to get ahead of ourselves um I still don't think that this is a nine or 10 win team I still think this is probably an eight- win team if everything goes perfect um but I think that you know getting to a bowl game at this point is probably probable and uh you know that that's a good that's a good feeling for a first year of your program especially as program like Michigan States and you know you're just we're going to continue to get these this is the first of many 5050 games and uh you know hopefully we can if we can get 60 to 70 win 60 to 75% of those games then we're going to have an all right year and we're going to go to a Bull game so um Jonathan Smith I think today I guess he just I think today is when Jonathan Smith arrived officially um and I do think to some degree this was a program win uh just because it is a big 10 opponent it is on the road this Maryland team has been steadily improving and the fact that you're able to go out and get get a win like that early in the season give fans hope you know without having to um you know you get a little bit it hopefully you get into October before you start seeing a lot of you know negative downtrod and hopefully that doesn't happen at all but it gives you it gives you I guess it gives you a longer honey Moon period for one because inevitably Michigan State's going to have some rough games this year against those big four opponents and uh this is going to you know this is going to give Jonathan Smith a little bit of cushion for those days that lay ahead and uh you know another it's going to be another important game against Boston College another winnable game a game that you're going to have to you know if you can uh if you can eliminate those turnovers you got a real shot you got a real shot to win another one on the road um at Chestnut Hill Massachusetts so those are my thoughts so far so uh Jonathan's Jonathan Smith stock is going up as of this point in time and uh you know looking forward to
