Commanders News: Week 1 OVERREACTIONS & Takeaways + Commanders REPLACE Cade York With New Kicker!

[Music] today on the commanders support it is over reaction Monday I have gone over the all 22 film from the commanders week one loss versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and today I've got eight takeaways from that loss uh that we can take from here and kind of move into the rest of the season with and hopefully improve this football team as the season goes on but before we get into it get down there in the comment section right now and let me know is it time to panic after that 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers in week 1 give me a yes or no to kick off today's show so today there was a kicker swap for the Washington commanders they released recently traded four kicker Kade York and they signed veteran Austin Sebert who has uh kind of been this you know signs with a team that is in need of an injured kicker type of guy over the last several seasons he played in one game for the New York Jets last year played in six games the year before that so he's definitely somebody that NFL teams call when they need an emergency kicker Kade York of course missed two field goals in the week one loss versus Tampa Bay um it looked like his leg was all right but like he just wasn't able to put it where he wanted like he had a kick out of bounds that was a penalty he missed his two field goal attempts so he's got the leg but he doesn't have the accuracy which is why the commanders ended up releasing him today and signing Austin Sebert who is 45 of 56 on field goals in his career it's okay doesn't really have the strongest arm in the world or leg in the world I should say um but I think Dan Quinn at this point just wants a kicker that has decent accuracy and can put the football where he wants Kade York isn't that guy they're hoping CER is the answer to this question by the way I do want to say Kate York uh if you're worried about losing a draft pick for him it was a conditional seventh round pick so he had to meet certain conditions in order to for that seventh round pick to go to the Cleveland Browns he did not meet those conditions so the commanders do not miss out on a draft pick so let me know down there in the comments section did the commanders make the right choice here by wasn't on the watch party yesterday big shout out to uh to Joey Peterson for doing a great job with you guys yesterday um but I went over the film last night and uh I came away with these takeaways from week one here so let's start with Jaden Daniels who had his NFL debut yesterday and I thought that he definitely showed uh all the promise that we have been talking about with him on this show he looked like a future Superstar quarterback in the league or at least he has the foundation to become a superstar quarterback in this league the completion percentage was pretty decent at 70.8% total yards both passing and rushing was under 300 uh but he did have two touchdowns both of them were runs and he protected the football well with zero interceptions however he didn't really connect with his wide receivers namely his number one wide out in Terry mclen he was targeted four times for two catches and 17 yards that's not good enough all right we've seen Terry mclen uh be a really really good receiver in this league with some really bad quarterback play uh they need to develop this connection plain and simply now it seems like Tampa Bay was doubling Terry a lot and the other guys Alam sakias um you know diami Brown couldn't get open enough for Jaden so he had to use his legs a lot but Terry mclen definitely needs to see the ball more as the season goes on the things that I liked on jayen daniels's film from this week is I like the quick decision making all right he was going through his reads and if he didn't like what he saw he took off he was very decisive in that way he definitely showed up legitimate rushing chops he scored two touchdowns he made some guys miss he showed a lot of that uh of dynamism that we saw out of LSU when he won the Heisman trophy with that dual threat ability and it's and it's that dual threat ability that he possesses that could turn him into a superstar in years to come and they took care of the football he did he did fumble that one time on The Blind Side there when Cornelius Lucas took a terrible loss uh but you know he didn't really see him all this different stuff he didn't throw the ball in the Harm's Way as a passer so at least he was making good decisions with the football but the things that I didn't like I thought he was a little bit too reliant on his legs he led the team in carries with 16 so he was definitely more willing than I think I would want him to be to you know get through his reads and then run right I want him to find the open receivers I don't want him to go one read and run I want him to be able to get through his progressions and be a Passer First did have some accuracy in consistencies he missed some guys down the field he did have some guys open down the field and he missed them in this football game did have some vision I did see some open receivers that were in his progression that he just didn't get to whether he didn't get to them decided to run instead or he just didn't see them uh he needs to see those open receivers uh when they come into His View and then he also stepped back in the pocket not forward in the pocket at least not enough when he was stepping up in the pocket it was usually to run the football all right and if he was still staying in there to try to pass he was kind of backing up backing up backing up and then the tackles on this football team are just not good enough to hold up in that situation uh so that's why the pressure was was on him constantly in that regard now my take on Jaden daniels's debut here is that he has the foundation that we have been talking about on this show he's he's super Dynamic with his legs man he can throw the football uh if he has open receivers and good protection around him I think that as he gets more used to the speed of the NFL game he's going to develop and he's going to develop into one of the top five players in the National Football League on the offensive side of the ball however he is going to need time this is not going to be a CJ Stroud thing this year here then we go to the next question here on today's edition of the commander report what is the percent chance now that we've seen Jaden Daniels in action against the NFL defense what do you guys think the chances are he wins offensive Rookie of the Year put it on a scale of 0 to 100 for me I think with all the talented uh offensive rookies in the League this year I'd put it at about a 5 to 10% chance at this point obviously it's a long season but I did see enough warts in his game for me to think that there's going to be somebody else that's more impressive over the course of the year so let me know what you guys think down there in the comments okay now let's get to Emanuel Forbes and this is my second takeaway of the day and I think it's time to bench him okay I think it's time and he was awful let's just call it what it is man we are here to be objective on this show and I've got nothing against Emanuel Forbes okay but this was a terrible performance from him he had an awful face mask that was a holding call uh on a really big downfield throw in this football game that was super ugly but you take a look at the Pro Football Focus uh grades here for week one 33.5 overall in this football game for your number one corner are you freaking joking me man 62.5 run defense grade he's not a good run Defender that was his best grade of the day the tackling he missed tackles he was not a valuable run Defender and then the coverage grade man a 30.0 for a second-year first round Corner that is an embarrassment for Emanuel Forbes right there man and I'm sorry I've seen enough in training camp after he got cooked by Garrett will he got cooked by by wide receivers on on the Jets team in the preseason game that didn't even make the Jets roster I mean this is somebody that's not a good NFL player and I hate to say it because you know he was a ball hawk in college I do see uh some potential in his game but he hasn't been able to translated I think he's in his head at this point and I'm not sure if it's uh salvageable at this point and I think that if you have him out there he is a liability so if you want this secondary to get better at all you need to pull the plug and you need to bench uel Forbes for good this time all right then we get to the secondary as a whole and it's not just Emanuel Forbes all right it wasn't just on Forbes he was terrible don't get me wrong but Mike S played way worse than I expected out of him coming into this game he had coverage bus uh you know he wasn't the worst in the world and Benjamin St juice although wasn't perfect gave up two touchdowns in this game um you know he got beat for sure but I thought he actually stood with guys quite a bit in this football game uh but the two young guys man Emanuel Forbes and Mike Sam they need to do better I think the coaching staff needs to do a better job coaching these young guys up so there isn't those coverage bus against these uh West Coast type systems here that like to confuse these types of matchup uh uh deficiencies here and Sam still I expected a lot more out of him I still have high hopes for him and I he had a really good camp in preseason I think he's going to be just fine um but hopefully get Emanuel Forbes out of there and this uh secondary becomes at least serviceable moving forward and then somebody that was actually really good in my opinion was donon Payne now he didn't really finish a whole lot of pass rushes but he got in the face of Baker Mayfield a lot and he was relentless through the whole game I love the effort that he showed throughout the game he was good in run defense and honestly I thought pay had a better game than Jonathan Allen so I liked what I saw from donon Payne and I'm very excited about his 2024 campaign especially if Jonathan Allen turns it up another level head uh moving forward here so coming up here on the show I got more Washington now you guys know I have my reservations about Brandon Coleman but Cornelius Lucas's film in my opinion in week one was pretty darn bad I mean that's just the way it is I know Jaden Daniels didn't necessarily help him out too much by stepping back in the pocket instead of forward um but Cornelius man he had some really bad losses both as a run blocker and as a pass protector in this one he's not your long-term answer at all I think that week one showed that this is a rebuilding team so let's rebuild here let's set the foundation for Brandon Coleman's career he's going to have warts he's going to make mistakes he's going to look silly against going up against some of the best pass rushers in football in this division okay especially next week against Brian Burns but I I want to see what the kid can do all right Dan Quinn has been raving about his balance his technique his arm length he's got the physical tools to get it done so let's throw him in there let's see what he can do and let's have him learn on the job all right I think that that's very important and I think that at this point point you know the expectations are low for this Commander team anyway so let's go put him out there and let's see what he can do and then uh Andrew Wy is an absolute Thief guys right now he has one of the highest cap hits on this entire Commander roster and like Cornelius Lucas Wy was not very good at least in my opinion when I looked at the film as a run blocker as a pass protector he took some very very quick and very very uh frustrating losses let's put it that way and he got a three-year 20 $4 million contract in 2023 with the old regime this regime decided to keep them around as they starting right tackle and you know they're reaping the Ben they're reaping the frustrations of that right now man I don't think he's a good player he's heavily penalized or relatively heavily penalized um you know I don't think he's a he's a well-rounded player I don't think he's good in either phase of the game both run blocking and pass protecting uh there's worse offensive tackles in the National Football League but $24 million over three years is an absolute steal for Andrew w then we get to the running backs and we'll go to a little bit more positive here I thought the running backs had juice man I know that the offensive line didn't get much push for Brian Robinson Jr but I thought he ran between the tackles really nicely I thought he showed his ability as a receiving back really well and then Austin Eckler had a couple of really Dynamic plays as well so I like this running back Duo they had an offensive line that could actually block for something I think that this Duo would actually be extremely serviceable right so I do think that you can count on a couple of good plays from this Duo per game I thought these two guys were arguably the best weapons besides of you know outside of Jaden Daniels as a rusher in this football game and I'm excited to see how their 2024 Seasons continue because I thought they had a good one in week one then the final takeaway here is that I think it's time to play Noah Brown now I'm not sure if Noah is healthy all right because he was uh he was technically a quote unquote healthy scratch in week one versus uh the Buccaneers he was not active now maybe he's not up to speed on the Playbook all these different things he is learning in a brand new playbook I mean this Cliff kingsberry language and all this different stuff it's completely different than what he had with Bobby slowick there in Houston so it is going to be a little bit of a learning curve but he did miss the entirety of of the preseason with a shoulder injury and I'm not convinced he's 100% ready to go right now man so it's going to be interesting to see when he eventually gets in the rotation the one thing I do know though is that this wide receiver room is not good enough right now Terry mclen was doubled a lot Alam zakus and dami brown Luke mcaffrey Zack hers those guys were not good enough in this football game they weren't creating enough separation they weren't giving Jaden Daniels enough separation and you know comfortability to throw it to them enough which is why Jaden had to run it 16 times in this football game I think when Noah Brown hits the ground running here he's going to be the number two receiver for this team right away so uh listen man kind of just in totality here wrapping things up putting a bow on week one I've been saying for a long time that if you had expectations for this Washington commanders team to you know be a fast and quick and easy turnaround like the Houston Texans had last year I I've been warning against that this entire time all right usually these rebuilds take a little bit of time especially ones where your roster has serious deficiencies like on the offensive line like on uh the secondary Etc but you know what that's okay you got a really good culture here in Dan Quinn I believe in him as a leader I believe in jayen Daniels that he's eventually going to become one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League think you got some good pieces here to build upon all right it's just right now this roster is not good enough to be a competitive football team so expect five to maybe nine wins this year from this football team but you know what man that's okay because I think two to three years down the line we're going to be talking about this team winning double digit wins and competing for Super Bowls so if you have to do a little bit of short-term misery here with this football team I think it's going to be worth it in the end so it's your turn let me know down there in the comments section what is your biggest takeaway from the week
