Does Payton Thorne Need Perfect O-line Protection?

[Music] what's up warport family we are back with another great edition of the Auburn Express Power by the war raor it is Thursday and joining me as always on Thursdays is one of my favorite guests Jake crane from Crane and Co let me bring Jake in here Jake week one is in the books man how was your week one of college football man it was great uh I think we're up like 22 units right now in betting over at cranon company my brother keeps hitting these tied at halftime bets and he almost bet it for the UCL LSU game and talked himself out of it but it would have hit they were 1010 because oh boy missed that chip shot but I'm just glad it's back the the thing is just like everybody out there listening or watching knows once it starts it goes really quickly so let's make sure that we're enjoying every moment anybody that tells you the week two slate oh well it's just it's not very good deep down they don't love ball look I don't care who's playing psycho boy from the remember Remember the Titans said if they're playing football I come a running oh man uh look speaking of enjoying uh the ride uh a lot of SEC SEC teams enjoyed the ride in week one I think it was something like eight or nine teams won by uh scored 50 or more yeah in week one uh I was just talking with Brandon Marcelo and uh you know he's not a big fan of the FCS week one opponents uh but I thought it was good for Hugh fre to open with an FCS to kind of tune his team up for this next game which is Cal now they struggled out in California last year they snuck out of there with a 14-10 win Jake uh last week you and I talked about the offensive line and what they had to do they protected Peyton Thorne at a 95% rate what do you see uh what did you see from this offensive line in week one and what do you want to see from them in week two versus a cal defense that Hugh Frey says is going to make them throw the ball and prove that pton Thor can beat them with their on yeah and that's what they did last year the difference is you know we didn't have the cats we got on the outside uh I think this may be a game where you know that you can't double everybody right what you you can't double cam every time you can't double revaldo every time who's gonna come on don't worry about him you can't double Perry you can't double Keandre all these guys at the same time you got to pick one so that's fine you want to make alurn throw the ball Cal I dare you to do it I dare you to make Auburn throw the ball because it know Alabama A&M we should play this game in the spring I I think we should get rid of aday games and Brandon said is that what brand well that's what you know David con he does a get off my lawn every Wednesday and you know that's what we've been saying let's make it a spring game it's not just FCS because look there's some FCS teams that that can come in and give you some real resistance I mean South Dakota State North Dakota State one of my best friends he was a a a groomsman in my weddings the wide receiver coach at Montana State they they'll give they'll give you a good look but uh no Auburn handled business the offensive line did what they should have done um we we were able you know the whole kitchen was there now this is a great ramp up game in week two you're G to get more resistance got to make sure and put some respect on Cal's name but after what I saw last week I wanted to see the chemistry there now chemistry is a lot easier when guys are running wide open but I think pton from a decision-making standpoint too outside of a couple times and Coach free got on them one time on the sideline and and to me it was about the play before play that was just ran he should have given that ball instead of keeping it uh and and he didn't so that's outside of that though Auburn played pretty clean the secondary I I've got to see it the pass rush I know they were trying to keep their integrity in their pass rush lanes and keep that guy in the pocket because obviously he wasn't a great thrower of the ball this Mendoza guy can run too he's not a great thrower of the ball downfield I wonder if they're going to let them pin their ears back a little bit more but you just can't rush past the quarterback and that's hard that's it's hard to tell a defensive end hey I want you to go get this guy get off the ball run the hoop work your moves you don't want to rush past him and then you don't want to work an inside move and get underneath him where he breaks contained so you're really going to see The Rush discipline it's kind of Controlled Chaos from a defensive end standpoint but I was uh Auburn did what they had to do in that game and and now we get a chance to see him play a team that's better well uh defensively on the other side of the ball uh for Auburn uh they're going to be looking to slow Cal down again for a second year in a row now they missed a lot of field goals last year Jake um as matter of fact if they had hit one or two we might be talking about a Revenge game for alurn of sorts uh but Auburn's defense held uh A&M to three points on Saturday uh you know what can we expect defensively uh I believe Malik blockton got in on the sack party jayen mlau got one keldrick faul got one uh so they turned in three sacks uh C's defense last week did not register a single sack against UC Davis uh so what do you want to see here from Auburn's defense well again it's it's make Mendoza make the mistake uh this guy he he can get creative but you know creative guys can get themselves in trouble sometimes if you let them what what I'm interested to see when it when it comes to you know Cal's defensive front if they do load the box and say all right Auburn beat me with the throw one will Auburn take what's there you know we talk about balance run to pass and yes you want to be balanced but being balanced is the threat it's not exactly the execution what do I mean by that you got to take what the defense gives you if they're going to load the box and you're able to beat them on the outside consistently that doesn't mean you never run it but my job as an offensive play caller my job as an offensive player my job as a quarterback is to take advantage of where our advantages are it is a numbers game it is math and geometry within a sport so uh they need to take what's there if that's throwing the ball then at some point Auburn because that if it doesn't work against Cal this is it's going to be the same thing as last year teams are G that's what made Auburn being able to run the ball well actually really impressive last year because that was their only trick they were a one-trick pony so Cal's defensive line uh this offensive line I think at Auburn not only from a being able to run the ball standpoint but from a holding down the pass rush and creating a pocket for pton to go through his reads if it leads to the checkdown it leads to the checkdown so that's uh I expect Auburn to handle business um and and I know Hugh Reon them understand that but for for us as as fans and media members yeah we can we can talk about it's Cal it's this it's that and the players have to know hey who are the game breakers on this team what is the scheme but this is not about Cal you know I said on another uh Auburn show earlier I don't care if it's Cal I don't care if it's Cal Tech I don't care if it's Cal Ripken Jr it's about Auburn it doesn't matter it is aess opponent and how much better Auburn can get from week to week fundamentally and execute what they want to do as they form the coward of Junior coming has me Dy doesn't matter uh Jake uh let's talk about some of the smaller technicals now you mentioned hu's getting into pton Thorne on the sideline about you know decisions that he was making I mean and in the postgame he he kind of had like and this isn't a quote but it was he his attitude was like God damn it we can't do this this year so we've got to clean those things up uh but you you fielded a lot of freshmen and they played well but also did some freshman things now I had I on our Sunday show Jake uh you know how it is when you cover a game from the Press Box you you actually see way more on TV than we get to see in the Press Box so we're following the game but you know the TVs are way up there and and and we're not getting the same TV replays that everybody's getting but our listeners came into the comment section and they kept saying Malcolm Simmons almost dropped that touchdown before he broke the plane on the pass that he got from Hank Brown so I went back and looked at it and I slowed it down and I was like holy crap like he almost Deshawn Jackson did um this was crazy I posted it to Twitter and I just said hey you know um I'm sure Malcolm got a good talking to in film review this morning about making sure he finishes across the line Hugh fre responded and was like well why yes yes he did and that went crazy viral um Perry Thompson slowed up on his touchdown going into there the defender was right on his hip uh you know what kind of lessons I mean as a former coach you know you're looking at that and it's hard to criticize them because they played well but also you can't let up like that against Power five opponents you know you know what what would your message be to these young guys about making sure that they don't let it go to their head and that they finish through the play yeah well first off that's a high class problem if our if our worry is you're slowing down too much when you're going to score a touchdown I would much rather have those problems than the other but the message is this isn't High School right this you're not going to get away with that against Georgia like I mean it's already so hard to score it's going to be so hard to score against some of these teams that Auburn is going to have to play you better take every yard like as serious as humanly possible and it it's just like conditioning right you hear finish through the line finish through the line right that that's what's going to build us up together to make sure that we finish on the field it's the same thing going into the end zone so yeah it's uh you got to grow up but again that's why these games you know that there is stuff you can get out of of them I don't agree with people that say you know even Brian Kelly at LSU is like well we really don't know anything yeah you know some things you get mistakes on tape to teach these young guys those those are the most valuable things and you did it in a 73 to3 win so it's part of the maturation process it's part of the growth process and I also think they probably told those young guys Hey listen it it ain't always going to be like this man like it's it's the you know going out there and and we want to have fun and all these things but we're going to go play some teams that are littered with NFL players and you cannot take a centimeter for granted because it is a game of centimeters it is a game it's not a game of inches it's a game of millimeters that's what it is at this level so uh I'm glad if if those are the mistakes that that we're having to fix that's great I I know there was probably a couple busts uh some things defensively against some of the spacing routes combinations that they were getting but look guys sitting in holes and zones that's something you got get a feel for it as the game goes because you can't just tell a guy oh well just run to this spot and get out of your spot because he may sit down here well if that's the case we'll just start running a lot more man coverage then and that's going to close all that up so I uh there's there's always stuff to learn the tape is Never As Good As you think and it's never as bad as you think uh freeze thinks that uh Cal is going to load up the box and try to force pton Thorne to beat them again what do you want to see from pton on Saturday right uh to show that he's moving to needle the right the right direction what does that look like for for pyton Thorne from a numbers perspective yeah well I mean that's what I would do uh if you're going to force Auburn to do one thing because I don't think Cal's good enough to play Auburn even and just say you know what we're gonna play you straight up it's gonna be basically man on man we're gonna rush for every time we may insert a fifth guy if the running back doesn't get out in a route if he's in protection uh but look again you've got to take what's there and what I want to see too is recognition of the Box PRI now that pton has the ability or at least we've been told he has the ability to change the play again it's a math problem if Cal wants to put all these if we're GNA go 11 personnel right which they're gonna match that Personnel where Auburn has the advantage is raal raldo can get split out wide so we can use your heavy Personnel or heavier personnel as compared to 10 Personnel uh what you put out there on defense which really quickly 10 personnels one back no tight end 11 personnels one running back one tight end you go running back to tight end so 12 would be one running back two tight ends uh but but Payton's got to be able to make the throws to open guys I want to see the pick routes be clean if they're going to play Man coverage that's what that's what I'm always interested in because if you're gonna rob Peter to pay Paul in the Box you're most likely gonna have to play more man so if they're gonna line up and play man and it's cover one well that's safety in the sky you're gonna be you're gonna have to choose one right you and this is where Auburn has become dangerous offensively right it's not just raldo Fairweather and a bunch of guys who hope they're going to play in the UFL like Auburn's got cats on the outside that are NFL caliber players and they can hit you from all different ways you know you want it from the left you want it from the the right it don't matter we'll give it to you any way you want it uh Jake before we get out of here man I gotta put you on the spot give me uh give me a final score here this Saturday uh how much does Auburn win by what's the score and why Brandon went 3717 oh my God I was gonna say 3817 I'm going 45 to7 I think the defense is going to play lights out what what you 3817 is that what you're going with yeah well I hope you're right yeah I I think Auburn is is going to show that hey um you know this is a team that can be versatile against a team that can apply pressure not that Cal's a great team but but you can't underestimate Cal you you can't go into this game again that's why the faceless opponent opponent thing is so important it's hard to underestimate somebody when you're worried about yourself so that's that's what that's what I want to see from this Auburn team and when they got a chance to bury him I want to see Auburn bury him if you got to bury him alive bury him alive we'll come back and check on on the next day so uh I I'm gonna go 3817 uh I think Auburn's probably up 3810 late Cal may get a touchdown uh there at the end uh but I think Auburn wins and and there's a good chance they cover yeah I like Auburn to cover in this one uh just a quick note here for our listeners uh this week Jaden a uh the Cal running back was listed as probable for this game uh if for whatever reason he can't go then I definitely like 45 to7 If he if he can't go I'm gonna put everything we got a baby girl coming in January it's our first congrats man yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna put everything on Auburn well God that's a dangerous growing up as an AUB that's a dangerous game to play don't put the college foot on Auburn yeah yeah well if Jay if Jay not doesn't play then uh that marryg go round don't go in
