good morning everybody appreciate you being here um you know uh obviously just you coming off the game you know last Saturday uh you know first you I do want to thank you know every Florida State fan that that traveled over to Ireland uh to to make that trip to be there to support us I mean it was an incredible turnout um you know it was you obviously a great atmosphere uh just you we have just such a a special fan base and you know I'm I'm sick that we didn't uh didn't give you a better outcome um you know obviously it's uh extremely disappointing but uh but I am so very grateful for for every one of uh you know Florida State faithful that uh that that that made that trip and um you know it was was really remarkable uh just to see that support uh you know coming off the game you getting a chance to get back um you know obviously it's a it's a big trip there's a lot of lot of different elements that go into it I I'm uh grateful for our uh all of our operations you know you know every everybody that s that served part of of that making that trip happen I mean it's a lot of moving pieces and you know I thought I thought it went as as smooth as could be um and uh you was glad to get everybody back back here um you know obviously we had practice last night you know you adjusting to our to our game week you know yesterday was a Sunday for us today uh is a Monday and then we'll uh we'll you know continue to progress as we go but um you know going back and looking at the game um you know like I said I mean it's it's sickening that uh that we came you we came up short uh in that game and uh you know obviously I take take total total responsibility and ownership uh for that and uh you know I think that you go back and see the game um you know obviously it's it's my job to have have the team prepared to go and and play to the best of our ability and uh you know I I don't I don't believe uh you know that was our was our best and uh you know you could you could sit there and uh you look a lot of different factors um you know is you know there there's lacked um you know when you look at offensively um you know we really lacked lacked the explosive play you know showing up you know we had you know couple big runs couple of you know um um you know you decent passes but we just missed that missed that explosive play we only had seven possessions in the game uh which you know really you know U you know you got to make every play count and uh you know obviously both teams had seven possessions uh you so there wasn't a whole it was it was definitely a unique game um you know I was proud of our guys you know we we were able to own the ball offensively um I think that we scored on four of the seven drives but you know a couple of those drives had to settle for field goals uh you know we had the fourth down where we didn't convert and then uh uh we just had a few missed opportunities um but uh you know I thought you know it was was pretty clean game in in a sense of you know not not not hurting ourselves but you know obviously there were some things that uh that we left out there um you know you know they did a good job and some of the things schematically of of trying to you know add safeties you know we've had some we had some you know misassignments in in regard regards to you how we were trying to to account for uh for those guys but um you know at at the end of the day you know it's it's an opportunity for us to grow and build and uh I was really proud of the the guys offensively you know in that fourth quarter when we needed a touchdown uh to be able to put together that drive and uh you know I thought DJ did a did a great job the receivers answered answered the call uh you being able to find a way to to to finish in the end zone was big and um you know but uh you know ultimately I mean I've got to do a better job of getting the ball to our Playmakers um you know and and making sure that you we're giv you know giv those opportunities and you know still being able to maintain the balance that we have or that we desire but uh um you know I thought that that was something coming out of the game that you know I I definitely um you know it's just it's something that we we all get to get to work and be better at but something that specifically for myself I mean I got to make sure that that we when we come out of the game that uh um you know that we've been able to take advantage of of those opportunities and uh you know flipping over to to the defensive side of the ball um you obviously um you know it was it was a game that you know they were able to to establish everything on the run and you know it was um you know it was it was you know unfortunate that that we were not able to uh um you know to to create more explosives defensively I we had you know had the one opportunity where the ball was on the ground that we've got to we got to find a way to to um to you know create that takeaway with that opportunity that showed up uh you know obviously they were able to to uh you do a lot of different things in a run game you they did a good job of their shifts their motions uh you trying to keep us you know you know off balance uh you know forcing you forcing communication and uh you know I thought they I thought their their front did a did a good job of neutralizing you know our defensive front which you know we've got to have more production out of that out of that uh that group I mean it is you one of the best groups on this team and you know those guys uh you know they uh you know for for a lot of different reasons I mean we you know that's uh that's something that um we're going to continue to work and build and and you know I think this one of the things I've been pleased with since the game is just the ownership of coaches uh players everybody involved of understanding how much how much we have to continue to to pour into each other and you know you take ownership of of of actions you take ownership of what showed up and now it's it's about going to work and getting better and uh you know I think when you look at uh you know defensively we continue to um you know push and challenge you know that that forcing unit whether it's dline linebackers safeties you know Corners whenever it's forth we got to make sure that our fits are tight that we um you do a better job at tackling in space I thought we had too many missed tackles in space when when guys got on the perimeter uh you know they had 15 you know quarterback run designed quarterback runs which um you know when when that happens I mean it takes everybody and uh you know you got to you got you know obviously this week we're going to play another running quarterback and so it's going to take all hats and you know if you're if you're you're forced into the fit you know we got to make sure we're on point and being uh being in position playing with our eyes you know running through tackles and making sure that we're getting guys on the ground uh but we had like I said we had too many missed tackles you know there in space um and you know ultimately I mean we've just you know we we got to be better in in in forcing and stopping and and and stopping the team um you know when they when they U you know obviously are attempting to run the ball whether that's with the quarterback running backs you know speed motions whatever that might be we just have to be better um you know but uh you I've got a lot of confidence in this in our group uh still some things you know being our first game you know you get a chance to to continue to evaluate personnel and you know what are those what are those best best units I think there's some some you opportunities for growth there for us as well and just uh you who when where you know guys are playing and uh that's that's something that uh you know being in game one um you know obviously it's sometimes you you have to work through that and um but you we will definitely be better better in that regards and making sure we're putting guys in the best positions to to achieve success and uh you know special teams wise I really proud of uh um you know Ryan I mean you know and Ryan in that field goal unit to have two you know two of the the long field goals um you know one was a career long for him and just uh you know you see the confidence he has uh he did a great job in his kickoffs you know I thought our our coverage unit was was good in the opportunity we had had you know really didn't we were limited I think there's only 21 total you know special team snaps so uh really Limited in that but you know saw some good things and obviously some areas we got to work to get better but uh you know I'm excited about about I'm excited and grateful for the opportunity to to to go respond and you know this is um you know everybody's disappointed in in coming up short and you know that game came down to one play and um you know when you when you sit there and you you look at it I mean you could take 30 plays in that game and um you know at any one you any one of those have a different uh you know different outcome I mean we're you probably in a lot better mood right now than than what we're in so um but you know how you respond to it you know what you what you do I mean nobody nobody ever wants to find yourself in this situation but I believe in the character of the team I believe in the uh in this coaching staff I believe in the the talent and ability that we have but you know we got to go play better and you know it starts with me and you know it's my job to make sure that in all things that we're doing uh that that come come Monday night that our best football shows up and you know that you last week uh there's a lot of lot of different uh uh you know logistical things that we work through and you know you know you know obviously I don't know when our next you game of traveling abroad would ever be but you know it's you you look at all things I man why you know why did some things show up the way they did and uh um you know obviously we're going to learn and work and get better from it but um you know I thought our guys did a really good job in practice yesterday um you know there's there's definitely the right Edge uh that we need and you know just for this week you know obvious we're playing you know Boston College team that's you know kicking off their season new coach new coaching staff uh some very talented players you know very Dynamic you know quarterback um you know some experienced guys you know defensively that have that have been through it and done it and uh you know we know that uh you know obviously they're coming in ready to you know kick off their season and uh you know for us it's it's it's all about us going to get better and that's I want to see us play our best game and we got to have our best week preparation to to be able to have a chance to do that first question will be Bron on your left when discussing the forcing unit needing it to be to be better like is it physicality is it eye discipline guess what aspects are you looking improve there there was I mean you know you can sit there and you go through the course of of an entire game you we had you know we gave up uh you know I think it was you know three you know really explosive runs and you I think you see a little bit of of all in that you know as a um you play where you know we might have had a missed assignment you know thinking something else was coming rather than you know you know staying stay in the course of of uh you know the job and responsibility and if you have just a little bit of extra space in there you let let you guy you know be able to make something happen uh with that I think you our eye discipline you know making sure that our communication's on point making sure that our fits are are tight and that you know we're running through and and uh you know being able to uh to make tackles there in open spaces and uh you know I think there were some some times where there was some hesitation um that showed up and you know obviously that's you know I know as we talked I guess it was you a week ago or you know before the before the first game you know you sit there and like what is the concern going into the game um you know I believe in the talent and ability like you know but in the moment of truth when you're out there do you trust your discipline do you trust your details and then do you are you able to go put that on display and you know I think you know and that's not just you know for new players it's also you know older and experienced players that that you know in that moment you got to trust the things that you you train yourself to do and whether it's you know open field tackle it's those fundamentals that and do you rely on that in that moment if it's if it's you know your your block destruction if it's if how you're fitting the Gap you know the you how 11 guys are playing as one uh you know there defensively I mean that's it's so critical and um you know I think those are things that you you have to grow from you have to learn from but you also see the importance of it when you come out of the game you know and and when those things are the things that hurt you I mean it's just the um you know the sense of urgency to get that fixed and to be better uh you has to be it has to be done how do you counter a game having such a slow tempo limited quantity of possessions and in that game on Sat Saturday did you try to do anything in the moment that just didn't worked you know yeah I mean it's it it's the fewest possessions I've ever been a part of in in a game and you know it was really both sides I mean obviously you know they were able to um you know to extend drives you know their their offensively I mean we we got to be better on a third down defense getting off the field you know some of those things are are a part of it but on the flip side of it you know we we were very um you know we were methodical with our drives offensively and you know we had you know multiple drives of of you know nine8 n you know 10 plus plays um you know and that's you we need to see those explosive plays show up and you know we did we did take our shots we did have some some opportunities you know some of them didn't didn't uh um you know plan out you you play out the way necessarily that we that we wanted but um you know those were those were a part of of the plan and uh you know we just you know when you miss out on some of those explosive opportunities I mean and and you have these you know longer drives I mean it does shorten the game and uh you know so it it like I said it's the importance of every play making sure that you can execute make sure that um you know obviously um you know we tried to we tried to mix a few things up um you know and just what we what we're doing but you know like I said I've got to I got to make sure I do a better job of uh you know as we roll through you know putting our guys in a best position to to achieve success and and you we're going to do that we'll go third row on your right for Matt did you expect there to be so many few uh possessions in the game like on both sides and how big of a part did the helmet communication kind of play in that like how did that change things yeah I mean I think it it definitely you plays a role I I would know I didn't expect there to be that few I mean I think we had one possession um if I remember correctly you know one possession in the fourth quarter maybe one possession in the uh I it was only three it was three possessions in the uh in the second half and which is you know obviously very unique to have you know we only had four there you know in the uh in the first half so I mean you don't really you don't expect to be you know that few but I mean it's something that plays out in the course of the game um you know I'm sure you know that was a big part of their plan of what they you know what they wanted to do and um you know obviously as as it all kind of played out it it played out pretty you know pretty good for what they were trying to accomplish but uh the helmet communication you know it was it was uh I mean it was good you know in the second half uh they said that their helmet communication um you know went down and so we actually weren't weren't using it there in in the uh part of the second half uh because of uh you the official came over and told me that it went out and then you know even whenever we tried to use it there was the it wasn't in full operation there uh you know there later in that in the game so I mean that that was all part of it but I mean it's just you know that's that's part that's that's just the game and so um you know it's different different you know factors and elements that you that you work through and um you know but it was it was definitely unique to only have you 14 total possessions in a game we go front row your right you talked about I guess finding finding the balance on offense finding the explosiveness the uh the the first half and the the passing game how involved the running backs were I think the only real shot downfield was was negated by the pass interference was that what you thought was going to be effective was that trying to help DJ settle in were their shots he maybe didn't take what what do you think went into that that was it was it was part of our it was part of our plan because we felt like you know we' have a chance to to get leverage get in space you know let guys uh you have have a chance to go make play some of it with just reads you know uh been able to take something something quick but I I thought it was I thought it was a uh a good start to it I thought DJ you know settled in you know was able to get the ball you know get the ball out and spread around and you like I said I mean you look at the you look at the you know the first half I mean you know we were able to move the ball on every Drive um you know unfortunately we had the you know they they made a great the corner made a great play um you know great call on their on their part on the fourth down that we came up short um but you know we're able to move the ball we just um you know unfortunately we got to we got to make sure we we finish you know finish those drives with touchdowns and um you know that was something that you you obviously work to build off of but we did you we did have a couple of you opportunities that you know didn't go the way we wanted but um you know I mean it was it was all kind of part of our plan go back to Jordan on the left coach you mentioned it a little bit already but what has the mood of the team been like the last few days traveling around Ireland on Sunday and then were there any leaders that stepped up after the loss or you know during the last couple of days yeah you know I was um you know obviously one of the things that of you know staying there the day after you know we got up you know we got up pretty early there on uh on Sunday we had a team team meeting we met offensively defensively um you know went through you went through the film you had a chance to watch watch the game I mean it was you know nobody nobody was in a good mood I mean but you know on the also you know with us going over there and playing the game you know was probably 90% over 90% of our team was the first time ever outside the country and uh you know I didn't want to to just go there and and miss an opportunity for them to have an educational experience and you know they did get to uh to go and see some of the you know some of the the town you know you know guys got a chance to to get that experience and um but you know I I am I am grateful for this this team's you know mindset you like I said the the ownership of it you know where it's um you know being a part of a team I mean you you pour so much into you know you so few opportunities and um you know but there's guys that even directly right after the game you know some of our our best players I mean obviously you know us as coaches you know when you're willing to take ownership of action and then you know obviously the commitment to you do everything that you can to go get better and to to to fix the areas of mistakes and um you know to understand the the importance of the the of the smallest of the smallest things whether it's a you know play calls whether it's you know what you're doing whether it's a technique a fundamental um you know we all have we all have a job and responsibility you know to each other and uh you know so I think our guys have have had the the the right mindset in what we need to do um you know there's still all in front of us and um you know we got to go and just get better I'm not wor about anything else beyond beyond that I'm not worried about uh you know anything that we can't control right now other than going out there and and you know putting our best foot forward you know you know here today you know being prepared for our Tuesday practice tomorrow and you know obviously as we'll build throughout the course of the week but that's that's that's what I desire and I think I've got a football team that you understands that and you know definitely showed it last night in their approach we'll go back to Matt third on your right do you think some guys uh during the game were tentative or like kind of afraid to make mistakes um you know I you I think it's it's one of the things you when you have some you have some newcomers guys that are in different uh you different roles or different uh uh you know opportunities that you know there's a you know you that's where you talk about you got to trust your training you got to be able to trust the things that you've done and prepared do I think there's some guys that uh that play hesitant at moments yes um and that's where you you got to you got to be able to to work through that and you know at the end of the day it's you know it's um you know as a coach you try to do all the things that you can do to prepare them for that moment and and how you train what you do um you know and making sure that guys are going to play fast you know through that you know there's some some some guys that were a little bit limited you know there throughout the course of uh uh your camp and that you know were available for the game and you know you got opportunities and there was you know it was some a mixed bag of results in in some of those things that we saw and so you know obviously we got to we got to do a do a good job job as coaches of of making sure that you know identify and and make adjustments as we need you throughout the course of a game but um you know I think that's you know as guys are getting out there you get guys you know having to play as one and you know we've got to make sure that uh you know we step on that field there's no hesitation and you know obviously guys going to cut it loose and and being the best they can be all right stay on the right side for second hey coach you mentioned it earlier but with Boston College having a new coaching staff and you know is it difficult to get a on them heading into the into the game especially when you faced them last year in a shootout does it change anything for you guys no I mean we you know obviously got a lot of respect for the guys that they have um you know for the players that they have obviously you know Co coach O'Brien his staff I mean you very you know um you know ivly extensive and uh you very successful coaching career uh you know obviously with him uh your coach Lewis the defensive coordinate defensive coordinator I mean it's a this is a it's a team that's going to be you know very well coach I mean they're going to be tough they're going to be physical they're going to be able to attack in a variety of different ways offensively defensively as well as in special teams and so um but you know in in all reality you know there's you know we're looking at everything and I mean from anything you can imagine uh you know and in preparation of what we might see and you know you know obviously there's going to be things that that they're going to be able to to to take from uh you know week one and probably try to try to utilize you know here for them and um you know we just got to we got to you stay focused on ourselves and be able to adapt to adjust to whatever shows up B on the front coach curious about two guys on offense Jaylen Lucas I think he was only in for maybe seven or so snaps is there an expanded role for him and then also hem Williams I know yall announced he wasn't going to be able to play against Georgia Tech what's his kind of status and timeline moving forward here yeah we'll see uh you'll see how I came um you know Progressive through this week but you know hopeful that he'll be available but you know obviously that's going to be something that's going to have to see you throughout the course of the week um you know he is he is progressing you know Shawn Murphy was another you know player that was out last week you know linebacker um you know you know he's missed a better part of Camp um you know and we're hopeful that don't know if it'll be this week but hopefully here in the next couple weeks and then uh you know Jaylen you know he's he's a guy that is is an explosive playmaker for us and you know he's one of those guys that um you know like I said I come coming out of the game uh the fact that he was limited in in touches you know I got to do a better job and uh you know just uh obviously um you know it's sometimes there's a variety of different ways of how the ball gets to somebody um but uh you know that's that's a guy that we need to be able to make an impact and um you know he'll continue to work he'll continue to do um you know the things that he needs to do to to be to be better and to continue to to you know uh you know be ready for those opportunities but um you know you know he's you know obviously he's done a good job throughout fall camp and um you know he unfortunate you know I wasn't able to to get him to be a bigger part of that game throughout there on Saturday as on the back right you mentioned the game plan with DJ was to spread the ball around I guess you stretch a defense horizontally that last drive though when he made those throws downfield did that open anything up in your head about how you can use them and maybe gives you guys the more space to run the ball if you can stretch both vertically and horizontally no I mean it's it didn't go into the game not wanting to stretch the the the ball horizont or vertically either you know I mean there was you know we we called our shots and there's some you know a couple looks where you know obviously different different Dynamics um you know we checked out of a couple based off the look that of that we were getting um but we also you know there was there was opportunities that that we did and and you tried to push um more confidence left less confidence I mean I was I woke up conf I mean I woke up on Sunday confident I went you know I was you know going into going into Saturday I was confident I know I know the guys that I coach and you know there's sometimes different elements of a of a game plan of of what you want to do and how you want to you know try to get guys space and um you know that's what we that's what we went into it with and you know just unfortunate unfortunate that you know connecting and and be able to have some of those you know vertical plays down the fields didn't didn't show up for us in in week one and uh you we continue to to to work and be better and and try to capitalize on those and you know it's it's going to be something we do each and every week come back to Jordan on your left coach you only really used six offensive linemen on Saturday was that part of the plan and also how do you think coach fatita did filling in for Coach Atkins uh you know I thought I thought the the communication was was went really well I we think we had seven guys you know rob you know uh Rob and and TJ both played um you know throughout the course of the game uh you know continuing to to to work through and you know I think we got guys that have experience I think there was there was some some really good things that showed up and you know there there was a as you go back and you watch the film it's just so how how you know fine it can be you know just uh with with having to have have you know guys you know all together it's not just you know obviously offensive line it's you tight ends running backs you know everybody uh you know being being on the same page and you just the finest of details where we had a couple couple of those runs that were you know extremely close to being you know you know what you're looking for and and the explosive plays that uh that could be created but uh um you know I thought I thought Gabe did a great job just in his communication with the with the with the guys on the on the sideline um you know obviously with all things that we're doing within the staff and we're going we're continue to build upon that um you know throughout these next these next couple weeks but uh you know I thought he I thought he did a really good job working with those guys we got time for a couple more we'll go to Chris I have two questions but they have to deal with one another how much was footing an issue there and how much does that play in the setting the edge containing a quarterback like hes King who's obviously very elusive I mean it it both both sides had to had to deal with the same thing and and there's both sides there's times of of guys slipping and uh you know that's was all all part of it you know every surface is going to be unique to itself but um you know there few times that we you know lost our footing and allowed you know allowed allowed them to get to the edge which um you know it's just you know we got to we got to be better you know we don't we as and you know I don't think it was a huge part of it but it definitely you know definitely you shows up and you know you don't those are things that you sometimes you can and can't control but obviously we got to we got to make sure we're doing everything in our power to to have an edge you know defensively and then uh obviously you know whether it's on the offensive or defensive side make sure we're you're staying on our feet and have an opportunity to make make the play last one will be Matt on your right so last week you said going into the first game you have like the biggest menu of things you could see does that still apply this week with Boston College having not played yet and then how different do you expect them to be with Bill O'Brien now being the head coach no I mean it's yeah for we get for first two weeks we're going to have a huge menu of things that we could potentially see and uh you know obviously um you know you you got to prepare for for all things and you know we'll have we'll have our thoughts of what we might see but you know you got to be able to adapt and react to to what uh what shows up and um you know that's going that's that's a a part of it when you play in week zero and you know you're your first opponent's playing their first game especially with a brand new staff so um you know it's a it's a it's a very uh you talented staff with some talented players to be able to work with so um you know we're we're excited for the week of preparation and doing everything to put our guys in the best position to go go have success this week all right thank you
