speed hello everyone this is one of the great Arenas in Motor Racing for over a century Italy's National autod Drome here in Monza has welcomed those who dare to race we should have an ultra close battle for pole position at the Italian Grand Prix got an hour of laps at the limit around this configuration it is 5.7 km 3.5 Mi the three chican the parabolica and the lesmo corners make up the lap officially 11 turns it is the highest speed circet of the Season here are the tires we're going to be at the softer end of the par range because it's the C5 the C4 and the C3 tires for the session across the weekend we're going to be running the softs at the end of the qualifying hour what a pitcher monzer is on qualifying day it is round 16 of the world championship and statistically somehow it's more important to be on pole here than it is on the streets of Monaco it is an altered Monza the circuit has been resurfaced the curves have been changed and it means the risk being taken in the escari chican is going to be something when we get to Q3 a driver who had won around this circuit in the past is David Kar see it is a thrill to be back at lonza it is it is a fantastic venue and that corner right there I nearly bended it on my way to winning here in 97 because back then you were threading the needle of very high curbs that has been changed for this year it means the speeds have gone up the drivers can be a lot more aggressive they don't have to be as precise in that middle part of the lap it is a fantastic track when you get it right and I think this is going to be Incredibly Close Jolan are you expecting it to be another session of fine fine margins oh we don't expect anything less at the moment in Formula 1 do we every weekend seems to be close with I guess with the exception of last weekend where McLaren flew out of the blocks after summer but no this one's going to be back to the the status quo of prummer break I'm quite sure Ferrari are in the mix Mercedes look quick McLaren and Red Bull will be there on thereabouts as well and as you said it surprising how important qualifying is on this circuit with such long straights and big breaking zones julan put us back in the cockpit you've been around here more recently it my distant memory is you're almost finger tipping your way around some of these Corners because of the highs speeded nature would you would you concur with that I mean sort of because it's it's low down force compared to when the car's bolted on on a high downforce track like last week in in zamort and it it feels much more floaty than it does on uh on the higher down Force when you've got the wings trimmed out as they are breaking points are so crucial around this track the brakes set up everything and you've got the big breaking zones of the first two chicanes the lesmos I actually really enjoyed the lesmos they're a good challenge you can hustle through and feel the the Formula 1 cars working as they should but then again you got to get the brakes right into aari and parabolica then when you get round to the end of the lab is about piecing it together and going brave to the outside now they've brought the gravel back but I find also DC it's a it's a track where you have quite a lot of thinking time each time you come through a corner there's six corners affect ly punctuated Often by quite long straight so you sort of have a lot of time to think about the next one I don't know if that's always a good thing or not so much yeah did you mind ever wonderand could I know mind did once well it is a great challenge that is set up wonderfully for us it is a roasting day once again the track temperature is 50° out there the air temperature is 33 and whilst jolian and David were discussing the nature of this circuit and how you extract the speed from your car we had had a look a few moments ago into the Williams Garage where we've had our first driver change down there since the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix when we had Oliver bman substituting in for Carlos signs we've said goodbye to Logan Sergeant his time in Formula 1 ends and Franco col of pinto is going to set a lap time which he will hope will put him at the sharp end of the grid he'll be the first driver from Argentina on the grid in Formula 1 since 2001 DC yeah it's great great opportunity for him and uh great trust being placed in him by The Williams team he's part of that driver Academy so they have as much knowledge of him and his abilities and his work ethic as any of the teams in the the pit Lane and it may have come as a bit of a left field name for for those that are relatively new to the sport but the opportunity can come at any time and it's about being ready and we're about to find out if he's ready green light at the end of the pit Lane qualifying underway for the 16th round of the Season we're racing as we always have in every single year of the Formula 1 World Championship the Italian Grand Prix this is qualifying to set the grid positions Franco kapino is the new name in the field Jordan he had a really promising final practice session as well placing inside the top 10 Williams generally were really good earlier on and they'll have high hopes for this weekend on a circuit they've always gone quite well at remember Nick de stepping in and cementing his his full-time drive that lasted uh about half a season last year but he he came in for Williams and got a top 10 straight away and that's where colapinto was earlier on in practice album was within half a second of the pace in the other car kapino is a few TS back but still in the top 10 it wouldn't be a big surprise right now if he got through into Q2 with the the performance that he's shown so far it's been an impressive three hours of practice Williams always have strong straight line speed and a very slippery car they've tried to change that so that their car works at a wide range of circuits there wonderful pictures being able to enjoy this with the fans lining the circuit the wall of red on the left and on the right as the Ferrari drivers show their appreciation in practice at least they were waving to the crowd slightly different crash helmets for the two Ferrari drivers as well they've got a slightly altered Livery uh but look it's red it's at Monza uh you're going to have to tell the difference though between signs and lir cuz they're both going to be contenders for pole position an extraordinary turnaround on the evidence of practice anyway for Carlos SS who was out in Q2 one week ago yeah it's a great comeback for Ferrari in a place where they need to perform for this adoring toosi who have been showing their pre-love for Lewis Hamilton who will be joining them next year but right now all eyes will be on this team and we're going to get a opportunity to see how they open their uh qualifying campaign bigger gap between the two cars than maybe I would have expected lir hanging back a lot further because I would have I would have thought taken the opportunity to be uh getting a distant tour from his teammates but he's now just entering the chicane his SS makes his way down through the C Grande to the second chicane six seconds between them on the track I think that's fairly peachy for a distant toe but you're not going to be impeded for the uh for the breing points and for these Corners here the lesmos so might see it tighten up slightly to take more of an advantage on the straights but the more you gain on the straights you do then lose through the corners and have the dirty oh very Wade dips into the gravel and well that's an aborted first attempt for SS meanwhile lir is H still very much on it charir two times on Pole Position around this circuit a black crash helmet for this weekend so you can tell the two Ferrari drivers are these are the curvs at a scari he that was a dramatic shot with the visor cam I think jodan just about finished his sentence there I think that was all right but going through there we've seen so many moments on the edge with the drivers dancing on the limit before we've even got to qualifying certainly that corner which was the lesmo certainly the corner that charlot Clair's just come out of which was the parabolica he's fastest at the moment 13 minutes to go in q1 we will lose the five slowest drivers at the end of those 13 minutes yeah that's been a popular place for driver mistakes as we see an offboard of Carlos through the first lesmo nice on Entry but just overcooks it as he rolls the car through yeah just enough to mean that he had to lift out and but that is the scen it's sort of medium speed but I call it a high medium speed corner but it's proving difficult um we had Kevin Magnuson Benny's hash there in fre practice we've had uh many others dipping a wheel we saw this man Max Fen in Fe practice punched the steering wheel in frustration when he ran wide on that corner yeah that was one of the more dramatic moments on the ex lesmo too visakam is so good isn't it for just dropping us into the cockpit and seeing what the drivers are seeing and I don't think we've been live on board with the driver before who's having such a big moment with the with the visor Camas that you can really see Carlos the sort of heart in mouth for him as he got wide onto that gravel his foot in spat the car into uh into a big slide so charlot Clair has the fastest time at the moment we're awaiting out laps for for most of the field and charir fastest Carlos SS asking the team to check the floor Max a stap and looking for a bit of form looking for a a cleaner run that wasn't happy with the way his car was turning earlier on that was true in zandor this circuit is the complete opposite of zanor and there's another gravel brush for Max foren who's won this SC pre in the last two years yeah right out onto some of the gravel that's pulled on to the Circuit from signs but manages to keep it on the exit of the carb so this is a well you can see he's hustling still a in qualy but um a tidy enough first attempt meanwhile we've got Norris lighting up the middle sector he's uh well full 10th quicker than vatan as he comes to finish his lap I think Norris did exactly the same line as as Max through lesmo 2 as well so it's becoming pretty much the convention to go wide and get right on the edge of dropping that wheel off into the gravel lir was quickest Norris comes through that's the best lap of the weekend they're straight down to a really sensible Pace the top guys so Lando Norris a four time Pole Position holder trying to go back to back with polls for the first time in his career we're on board with his teammate now this his onetime Grand Pre winner Oscar Pian heading to the first chican and there you go ladies and gentlemen how not to get through the first chaan just carried too much speed and as he start to turn in under rotates that inside axle and that's so frustrating when you when you get it wrong at the very first Corner if it happens later in the lap at least you've had a chance to feel the car feel the tires build some confidence but uh yeah whether he was just not quite prepped on break temperature or just simply too much speed will'll find out in time quite a meaty flat spot on that tire as well from holding the break and trying to get it in there so Oscar going again and trying to get a Time on the board his teammate has shown that McLaren have immediately found the pace and he's going to try and get something on the board on this first set of tires to not be under any pressure later on in q1 it's Norris the Clair then for staffen and hulkenberg ahead of Alburn Magnus is in Sixth and it's Ricardo Kinto sonoda and Perez we've got Joe on an out laap Carlos signs is on an out laap as well he's had to go again the Mercedes are out there and this is Oscar piastri making his way through just needs a time good enough to put his place in the next part of qualifying that's the only aim he's actually out qualified Lando Norris at this Grand Prix one year ago if he does that today could well be for pole position but there's plenty of drivers who are feeling that it could belong to them this is just the first stage of qualifying and piastri trying to get back on form after when he become a grand prix winner anytime that you don't find yourself on the podium with a a driver with a team that are in the form of McLaren are in there's a little bit of a feeling that you need a response and the young Australian from Melbourne is across the line to find that response it's Fourth after he had to go again after that errow down to turn one behind Thea andair and the fastest driver at the moment Lando Norris on board with George Russell man let just listen through the second CH can see a couple of little stabs at the steering and then a correction for over steer in the middle that will have cost him a little bit of time course lesmo under steers out onto the carb second lesmo tidy enough but uh have a little look at sectors yeah a couple tents down both him and Hamilton actually relative to SS who's FES so far in the session so Mercedes feeling their way into it after what looked like fairly good practice sessions really loose on the rear end wasn't it into that second of game particularly as the track rubbers in you pick up more rear grip than you do front grip and it will come towards them but clearly they're starting with uh with the car right on the edge this is George Russell across the line he wasn't happy with the balance of his car earlier on even though he was second fastest it still looks loose out there it still doesn't look glued to the road he's fourth fastest at the moment Lewis Hamilton is behind his teammate that has been the case more often than not in Formula 1 qualifying this season in the head-to-head battle Russell is 114 up on Lewis Hamilton this is the day that Mercedes announced Kimmy Antonelli as Hamilton's replacement as a full driver for 2025 he will join the grid along with his current F2 teammate Oliver bman and he'll be promoted but that is for another day hugely exciting talent but but at the moment the Italian cheers are for Ferrari and for signs he's just done the fastest first sector of the circuit so far as he comes to the second lesmo Corner let's see what his exit's like this time around clean and he is going to try and book his place in the next part of qualify bit more margin for him on that time through lesmo to so he said to the team to check the uh the floor he's been through the pits and he's back out on the same set of tires than he was on that first flyer so lir on that first flyer was he was that 6 seconds behind Carlos to pick up a toe Carlos had a bit of that in the first seor he want to take a very distant toe from a couple of cars ahead into the parabolica and should get up towards the top three or four positions at the very least here and book his place into Q2 Perez is in the Drop Zone in 16th as it stands tires from nowhere sliding massively so Russell reporting what we could see on the onboard as gazli and Aon Alpine weren't able to get a car out of q1 here last last year gazley is in ninth position Aon directly behind him in 10th but the Russell radio making sense given what we saw DC yeah it was interesting because Russell in free practice where Mercedes were topping the times was again talking about being out of balance now the lap time didn't reflect that relative to others as much as free practice can tell you but again a little bit like a carryover from Holland where he just was a bit confused with where the grip was on on the tires so limited adjustments the team can make at this time um they're running stipulated tire pressures they would want to go less if they could uh they can do Wing adjustment they can do a differential adjustment uh other than that they fairly limited other than uh you know just running what you've run yeah and the margins you're chasing lap time with colapinto look at that at the bottom 2,000 of a second he's missing out on progressing to the next part of qualifying on his Formula 1 debut Yuki 9,000 away vry Bas he miles back 4 hundreds of a second he's missing out by and Sergio Perez I don't think we've seen a replay with what happened there but he finds himself 19th after the first run so concern for Red Bull a second run ahead for the new boy you're looking at Franco Kip yeah think K Perez has been about 610 away from Von as much as I can tell through the free practice session so if he was able to replicate that he'll he'll scrape through uh but clearly that was an underperforming performing lap that's put him down in 19th already Under Pressure he's in a Red Bull he's being sandwiched by the salers at the moment so yeah he's had one flying lap and he's it it's one of those ones we spoke about piastri in that lock up he had a second flyer to dig himself out of uh the real danger zone Perez hasn't had that so he's already left the pits and he's given himself enough of a buffer here to go for two Flyers in in this last run which I think is sensible for Red Bull because they cannot afford to lose him right now in in this part of qualifying he has been knocked out in q1 four times in the last eight Grand Prix the only active driver to not out qualify his teammate across the entirety of the season so far and a pressure run coming his way Alex alurn the minimum he would expect from this weekend would be Q2 looking for a lap to get himself into that part of the session and his teammate is trying to improve against those drivers who are just further up the road Magnuson stroll and Ricardo are the targets of Colin yeah reasonable for sector for albor who was taking it absolutely to the white line and Beyond and again on the way into the lesmo I always get so nervous when you see them so close to the white line that you almost think they could dip a wheel onto the dust on Entry my whole teammate Mika Hainan seemed to have a skill to always have it right on the white line pushing those margins but see how the rest of the lap unfolds for Alon into this impressively fast scar shukan lost some time in the middle sector relative to his best I didn't see any obvious mistake I'm thinking exactly the same as you watching this lap as well watching him go and brush the grass on all the entries is on the absolute limit of the track the contact patch of these tires is towards the inside shoulder and they are dropping the outside Tire over over the grass but the contact patches on the inside so he is maximizing the track width but you do just shudder every time the wheel starts scraping the grass on the entry there's James vals the team principal Williams taking the decision to take Logan Sergeant out of the C bring in Franco kapino turning down other options it's not been the easiest week uh it's a job where you learn very publicly he's in his second season as team Prince bort Williams it's not been the easiest one this is Max aaen leaving the garage and who is going to appear in his path oh my words Oscar piastri we almost crash yeah saw that Max yeah that was close close close close and uh I think that'll probably have a little conversation between the uh the two team managers there about the etiquette of releasing the cars yeah it's been noted for an unsafe release that's not a bit of an unforced error isn't it if you consider the stage of qualifying that we're at uh Perez needs an improvement he's got an improvement of lap time at the moment middle sector is good first sector wasn't an overall Improvement when it adds up it is going to be a step forward two minutes to go there is more time on the board to bail himself out if he needs another run but at the moment Perez is 19th and just trying to make the second stage of qualifying that's a time that's a time good enough for Ninth Place using the soft T that's not a terrific lap at all for for Perez and I don't know if he'll definitely get another lap in either he's got to hope that there's not big track Evolution for those behind yeah he had a whole bunch of traffic he was firsted out and uh there was a Lee on the next group coming so he had a bunch of traffic oh Kento fighting the car he was trying to punch his way into Q2 but he's threw the gravel to blow that opportunity giving it everything trying to make the next stage of qualifying but he will go out in q1 with a minute to go and that is huge attack my word they're on the edge here they have changed the curves and they are attacking so much that the house all over the road hulkenberg's finding a clean lap improving sector one and two yeah that was Magnuson coming through the scar chicane almost dropping it as well oh something's gone no way don't drive it into the gravel like that surely it looked like he'd been off earlier in the lap but that's very bizarre the way he took it to the uh the gravel yeah maybe an issue there with a puncher maybe something's gone a right yellow flag is out for everyone trying to improve Joe improves his lap time not his position white flag is waving for a slow recovering car we've got Ricardo colapinto sonoda botas and Joe in that drop zone at the moment stroll was on the brink but he's unable to find a lap time can anyone find an improvement including a driver who's won around here in the past that the winner in 2021 Daniel Ricardo desperately looking for a time that can take him out of the Drop Zone like Yuki Cod has just managed can he put him straight back in Ricardo can Ricardo gets to 15th position sonoda into the Drop Zone Lance stroll is 17th colapinto found the gravel and it's the two salvas as across the line goes Oscar pastri to go up to third Max aaen has the fastest middle sector of anyone so far and and you know what doesn't fancy showing his hand so he backs up across the line and Ricardo wins the inter Team Battle for which RB would make the next stage of qualifying and straight fight one by Ricardo to get in the mix there stroll down in 17th Alonzo knows he doesn't need a time colapinto his first qualifying session in Formula 1 and he's 18th the salvers again 19th and 20th the only team team last week to be lapped twice and they are on the back row first session in the books of col Pinto gave it everything but that wide moment into the gravel costs him and Ricardo will be the lead RB on the grid for only the sixth time this season for tomorrow's race it's a sign of how Cutthroat Formula 1 is there for colapinto had done quite well through the weekend but if you don't hit the lap when it counts right at the end then the Gap widens Alvin through comfortably in eighth and Franco kapino out in 18th and with quite the deficit in the end to his teammate he was so close to properly having a a wipe out though at least he didn't do that that was one of the big black marks for for Logan sergeant if Kinto had smashed that car on qualifying debut would have been tough at least he kept it pointing straight so many cars going off ahead of me unbelievable not very happy with that at all Magnuson went deep into the parabolica five cars out sonoda stroll kapino and the two salvas with botas ahead of Joe let's send it to Alex brond in the studio it's been a strong weekend so far hasn't it for Franco colapinto shame he couldn't have completed this lap lesmo 2 was where he lost the car he does just touch the grass on his way in though you don't get a feel for it on the off board but when we jump onto the helmet cam with Franco we can see what actually causes the incident he piles the car in and just catches a little bit too much of this inside curb look the car bounces slides that's what puts him wide out over the gravel and then he has to recover uh that Williams out over the gravel real shame for him he'd been strong and very close to Alexander Alburn throughout the full weekend so far mirror your comments on George Russell really interesting the Mercedes of course threw into the next part of qualifying but this car of course rebuilt earlier on in the weekend after the crash in fp1 and it just looks like an error generator all the way around needs to crank the steering lock through the first chicane grabbs himself a little bit of a toe even though the car's well out of the way we probably won't be giving it going fast enough to give us anything through the curve of Grande but it's in these slow speed chicanes where George Russell's really suffering with the balance of this Mercedes again this time the rear walks around all over the place for him so the front not purchasing in the first youan the rear moving too much on the way into the Sheck and chicane by the time we get a bit of downforce on the car for Russell things behaving a little bit better so perhaps the tire build for that Mercedes the mechanical grip not working for them uh quite as they might like and then the final seor of the lap uh a little bit better but George Russell has been flat out on the radio to the team trying to sort out these balance issues not because the car is slow per se he's right up there with his teammate leis Hamilton and right in in the hunt for pole position he's just worried about getting the lap in between the white lines with a car that's moving around as much as George Russell's Mercedes is thrilling first part qualifying guys thank you very much Alex the start of Q2 will be delayed is the message that we're getting uh we have yet to see a start time on our monitor oh there's the reason why I love this this digital age we've got the good oldfashioned witches broom to take take the gravel from the rest track yeah the marshals going to work there is Franco kapino first session completed uh first qualifying session in Formula 1 completed Marshall sweeping the track uh vry botas who's won a Sprint race around here in the past been on the podium multiple times out in the first part of qualifying along with his teammate Joe Guan you so frustration for that team uh two Salas the lowest cars in q1 for the second weekend in a row that's Daniel Ricardo who knocked out his teammate Yuki sonoda Coda ahead in the inter Team Battle but Ricardo lead car on the grid for the sixth time this season tomorrow as a result of that at the top of the page we had Norris lir piastri SS and Russell then it was v stappen Hamilton Alvin Perez who needed a lap at the end there but got a lap at the end there Alonzo gazley okon and the two passes but it wasn't immediately obvious what had happened to Kevin Magnus I think it must have been something like a puncture he just couldn't commit to a turn in and just steadily slowed and like he couldn't rotate the car at all had that huge moment through aari which he scooped up nicely he's still in qualifier incredibly having missed that final lap I think he also that caused that yellow flag that meant others couldn't improve obviously there was all the gravel at lesmo to as well so it it's a very scrap end to q1 but Magnus can reset looks like the car's okay and both hats are still in I think Julian he had already the telltale signs of having been off earlier in the lap you know the side walls looked a little bit Dusty from gravel so we'll obviously find out in the fullness of time but I suspect he's probably gone off somewhere kept trying around the lap and then if you wanted to be cynical unless there was a puncture it was almost like well how do I make sure that no one else can improve their time it was a very very strange no sign of any lockup run to the gravel if you were a puncture you would have seen an under rotation yeah I agree with that but I just I can't believe that he'd do that drop it just just wide no but there's there's he's already that moment from ascari was so big that his lap was done so just to deliberately nudge it through the gravel at parabolica at the moment you p16 yeah M I'm this this is so ridiculous it's so difficult drive it's so ridiculous let's keep it clean on the radio and bring the car back in frustration there absolutely but uh we've had this conversation before haven't we about yes You' got a lot of passion a lot of energy frustration comes through but there's not much an engineering team or mechanics can do with the balance is ridiculous you know they need a they need a hint is it under steer is it over steer as a bottoming you've you've got to try and swallow that frustration and uh give succinct information and for all you boy band fans out there or maybe as he's no longer with the boy band you're not R to refer to him as that I just said something inappropriate he's an artist in his own right not at all uh there we go lots of people uh in attendance lots of CBS down in the paddock lots of fans in the grandstand we're saying that Yuki Coda has a new race engineer for this weekend uh there was a different voice there and is Ernesto uh on the radio speaking to their driver so the premium on what DC said about imparting clear information ever more important when you've got a brand new person in the role uh the message on your screen is that the session will restart at 29 minutes past the hour local time so that's uh just under two and a half minutes just over 2 and a half minutes time and we'll get Q2 underway it's going to be very very tight once again one week AG go with signs and Hamilton the shocks heading out in the second part of qualifying and you're looking down into the Ferrari garage now as we journey to the second part and we'll working work out who we see in the top 10 great support for Ferrari every time uh we come to this circuit you don't always don't always get the same support if you're driving for another team DC no it was not a very popular Podium when you raised the trophy in first place and you're driving for McLaren in comparison to if you're a Ferrari driver but it's it's just passion isn't it and it's fantastic to to have that the energy here you know if we come off the back of the all weekend Rave and zamort a week ago to just pure passion it's that sort of murmur of the crowd talking to each other as the cars prepare to grow on track looking down into the ason Martin garage so is Lando Norris ahead of Charla Clair and Oscar pastri the top three uh earlier on in the first part of qualifying soda stroll colapinto botas and Joe were those to drop out and L strol heading out in q1 once again he has been on the front row here in the past in very wet condition I when he was driving for the Williams team it means that Fernando Alonzo is out qualified L strol 115 at this Junction of the season it's quite nice isn't it that of the seven or eight major players everyone's got a home race doesn't always happen but you come to uh to Monza obviously the huge Ferrari support and lir and SS it's a home race effectively for both of them being Ferrari drivers but lair's got Monaco pastry's got Melbourne Norris has got silverston both Mercedes of course huge at silverston and then there's all of those races that the staffen calls a home race whether it's Austria or Belgium or the Netherlands and then Mexico for Sergio Perez really adds to uh to the atmosphere in this week it's all about Ferrari and they're both going so well Back In Contention genuinely right now and all of the top seven that could be in contention of a poll got through that q1 on one set of tires so they're going to have two shots at a Q3 pole La yeah I think this this is definitely is going to e and flow right to that final lap there's all of the the top teams have got a lap in them if they can get get it all clean but it's so difficult uh to to hang it out there right on the edge and what is still a relatively green surface if I can call it that new new track very dusty offline so doesn't give you quite as many options and just coming back to the crowd scenes there the young lady with the hammer time felt tipped poster how fantastic is it that people take the time to prepare signs and the hope that their driver or in her case the camera and the world audience get to see it yeah you're a fandom yeah it's a wonderful passion everywhere we go it happens more and more it used to be certain races we always talk in Japan about the homemade signs but there you go another one in the grand stands as well and those grand stands on the the hole cheering for the team in red and you saw charlot Clair Carlos SS heading out of the pits first of all we have a green light at the end of the pit Lane second part of qualifying is underway and we have first out Carlos signs then it is Charlotte Clair gazley is out ahead of Aon Ricardo hasn't got a teammate in this session so he's out on his own and then the two hes are out two by two so everyone who's left so far going out in uh s ization with their team so signs ahead again in the uh in the lead Ferrari lir just a few seconds behind him it be interesting Julian to see whether he sits with that 6 seconds that you you highlighted or whether he edges up a little bit to try and get more of a slipstream yeah it's exactly the same right now as q1 they're the first cars out and it is science ahead and it looks like a similar Gap as well and I think this is something that they'll have already spoken about and tried to get the perfect window of course when you're in the cockpit trying to actually work out what is six seconds is a little bit harder than having the stopwatch and and being methodical and and all the pre-plan but certainly as science winds it up now looks like the cla's in a similar slot and science will once again lead him round it's great to hear them wind it up to fire into a lap out of parabolica squeal as well over 200 mph the Ferrari launches into the first chaen nice care of usage nice and tidy I would say through that first section pretty much bang on six seconds once again exactly the same so Ferrari in their sweet spot here it's almost like they planned it and uh as he heads down to the second chaen that is a good opening first sector so Tire preparation has obviously been good for Carlos SS yeah imagine they well on the radio toir on that out laap as well making sure that he's in the uh in the best window but interestingly the first sector where you're going to take most of that gain from being in the slipstream and science is actually quicker yeah you can have the toe but if you don't make use of it uh you can have all the team tactics you like everyone out who has a teammate in the session has gone out to try and do the same thing gaz's punching a hole for Aon at the moment Perez punching a hole for vapen either way signs is going to put a Time on the board it is a scruffy surface here at Monza there's a lot of dirt and dust off the racing line the barriers are close anyway the speeds are high and this is the driver who put it on Pole Position here in Ferrari red for the first time last year he goes over the line with a time of a 12.3 charl Clair does a 12.2 and he's 3 hundredths of a second on old tires they're first and second at the moment we're on board with maxus Sten the first lesmo little Telltale under steer out onto the curb right to the edge again through the second lesmo and his sectors well there are thereabouts in the first one quick as so far in the middle which we saw at the end of the first part of qualifying and he just didn't finish his lap so he's got absolutely clear track all the way down to turn 11 parabolica let's just listen my word that is quick from Max of stappen that's the use of new tires on that red ball as well and he comes over the line goes faster than the Ferraris you as you would expect with that fresh pelli rber here come the McLaren then first of all Oscar piastri goes ahead of the stampen by 600s of a second Lando Norris the winner of the last Grand Prix he was on the side of your screen he's now front and center as he completes his first run in Q2 and he is 800s of a second ahead of his teammate McLaren one two they are trying to win back to back grand prix they've got a three on the board so far this year it is by far their most successful season for 10 years they've got more podiums more points they're definitely In Contention to win the Constructors Championship and if it finish that way on Sunday that's the sort of Point swing Lando Norris needs to bring bring it into contention for the driver Championship but we'll deal with the business of qualifying first gaz's gone over the line and he's in ninth ahead of okon hulkenberg has been the lead h on more occasions all the way through the season he's ahead of Magnuson and then signs behind uh lir Perez in sixth after that first run in Q2 this is Alex alin's first attempt he's inside the top 10 here last year yeah it's a good first sector You could argue it's uh pretty much one chicane but you've still got to execute get that breaking right let's see if he keeps it tidy so close to the white line again it's almost like when they've resurfaced this track they've made it a little bit narrower than what they've been using in their simulators and uh you just can't help it feel that you just can't keep getting away with hanging a wheel over the white line into the dust but so far so good for albor reasonable middle sector but not well near as quick as piastri gets a good slipstream it's impressive consistency how they they are always able to at this stage get away with opening up these entries as much as possible Alin opening up the exit of parabolic as well with a nice slipstream into the final corner and gets himself up into the top 10 he'll be pleased with eighth position he would probably want seventh because of the fight with hulkenberg that was a wonderful cut to George Russell you saw how much he was attempting he's diverting there to try and pick up the slip stream of the Alpine ahead of him still a long way down the road but it still provides you with the benefit Russell not happy with the balance earlier on so far today let's see what this lap time is when he adds it all up he goes into fourth position 10 and a half back from the McLaren but that's fourth because we're going to have another one of those Ultra tight days Alonzo did get himself into the top 10 but he's just been displaced down to 11th because Lewis Hamilton went to first position and the crowd know who's heading to Ferrari because he got a massive cheer when he did so there's the comparison at the bottom of your screen between Hamilton and Norris Hamilton hasn't been on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix since 2019 drop zone at the moment Alonzo Magnuson the two alpines of gazley and okon Daniel Ricardo P5 Hamilton had a big slipstream from Carlos SS into the parabolic and that helped him take the fastest final SE dur in the top spot it was neck and neck between him and Norris through two of the sectors SS then benefited from following Hamilton across the line starting his flying lap now on a new set of TI and you can see he's on the fastest first sector of anyone so slipstreams being traded can Carlos SS keep it through the middle and final part of the lap this is looking good yeah t thre a scatter to look at the car over very quickly actually in the exit of Scar to the left side of the race track doesn't have anyone ahead of him so not quite sure why he'd want to be quite so aggressive with getting across onto that outer part of the track but across the line he goes signs up to third position trying to do today what his teammate already has in Formula 1 and take two pole positions around Monza for Ferrari that's only seventh for Charla Clair he finds himself behind Russell ven pastri SS Norris and Hamilton so here's a theory then was he pulling the car up so aggressively over on the exit of ascari to try and make it a bit trickier for his teammates to get the slipstream surely not you're coming up with all the theories today DC I'm enjoying this but unless I unless my eyes are playing tricks on me jol is there any reason if you don't have a car in front of you when you exit a scar to be quite so aggressive to the left side of the track is there anything that's changed there with the resurfacing it looks it's look slightly dustier on the right hand side I wonder if he's trying to steer away from that and move it to the to the left hand side [Music] earlier car is not uh he's not turning at all again the again was Punchy from charlot Clair on the radio winner of this Grand Prix in 2019 he's a driver like Max ven that likes having a good front end if it's going to be every balance is somewhere on the spectrum of oversteer to under steer oversteer you can turn the car in but the rear is sliding under steer you just can't turn the car in you have to wait to get on the throttle both Ven and L Clair are happy dancing the car on the edge of over steer and right now they're both struggling with inherent balance issues of not being able to get the front in which is why you got lir right now three and a half T away it's not a massive deficit maybe they can just Chuck on a load of front wing and and give him a balance that uh that he wants but it's not easy to just do that in a heat without incurring other issues and this was a similar thing that Max had last week struggling with a sort of lazy front end yeah one of the issues as well when you're you're searching for front thring front Wing into it is it can steal from the rear as well as putting some more load in the front axle you know that the airflow changes over the car so there is consequences to all these things and not able to play with r height they restricted on minimum tire pressures and uh youve uh just got to get on with it but qualifying is only one part of the Grand Prix weekend it's an important part as you mentioned Alex at the beginning that uh more important than Monaco which was an interesting statistic but uh checker flag rules all and that comes tomorrow projected knockout time is a 12.2 so that's everyone below Char Clair's 7th place who is trying to find an improvement if the track steps forward every lap that you run a lap uh around this configuration of circuit you're laying down the rubber the track is getting grippier the new tarmac is being bedded in and the grippiest time is to be last over the line but we've seen plenty of incidents and we saw what happened with Magnuson at the end of q1 when the yellow flag came out uh out very early Magnuson gazley okon Daniel Ricardo as well hulkenberg is well placed and Alex Alin leaving the pits at the moment winding up for a lap here is estban Aon these alpines didn't get out of q1 here last year something that's happened four times since and uh it's oon punching the hole in the air for gazley it looks to me as if he was actually going for another lap yeah he hasn't started the lap as yet so looks like they're they're almost doing couple of laps to prep the car or bring the tires to a different window than what they're forced to lead the pits with and we're continuing on with the man that we thought might be out of qualifying when he was scuffling into the gravel trap earlier on Kevin Magnuson trying to fight his way into the third part of qualifying trying to do what his teammate has done multiple times so far this year he hasn't reached Q3 at Monza since 2014 so it's a long long run Magnuson pushing on can't find an improvement hul ber fastest first sector of the entire session so far mag sliding his way through lesmo 2 as well grip level still right on the edge for everyone through there and he's not improving on this lap he's got a lot to find in the final sector this where he got it all wrong on the end of q1 for whatever reason hulkenberg's on a on a belter yeah very slippy that car let may explain why he's been so strong on several occations hulkenberg when he's been on track in that first sector particularly uh full 10th and a half quicker than Perez who's improving his lap but not as quick as the has in that first sector remarkably let's see what hulkenberg can do and Magnuson has not found an improvement hulkenberg improves his lap time not his position he is trying to reach Q3 for the seventh time this season today Daniel Ricardo is up on the Benchmark of Alexander Alban it is the moment where you have to improve or you are at r RK Perez trying to book his place in the top 10 shootout for pole position later on that looked well timed with the Alpine stting the lap and he is in eighth place for stappen behind him goes up to Second this is Daniel Ricardo coming across the line he's just missed out 19 thousands of a second between Ricardo and this man Alex Alan hulberg lost quite a lot in the final sector there there and that's left him still slightly in the Lurch even though it was a marginal Improvement albin's going quickly through half a lap both alpines are still pushing Magnuson is out in 13 and alono is trying to improve as well so there's still plenty trying to just Shuffle out hulkenberg and Alban yeah Albin definitely right on the Ragged Edge through Scar and um carried brilliant speed through the middle part but that made it more difficult for him to position the car for a clean exit let's see if it's cost him any time Alin trying to get into Q3 once again up to ninth he goes ahead of hulkenberg what can Alonzo do trying to reach Q3 for the fifth session in a row can he get there or does that run come to an end it comes to an end in 11th place Aon is on for a personal best but can it contend with the time set by hulkenberg no improves his lap time but not his position and the efforts have been thrown at this moment Ono circuit once again Alonzo in 11th out along with Ricardo Magnuson gazley and Aon Alvin in Q3 again and for the seventh time this season so will be Nico hulkenberg in the House Hamilton who hit the front and got a cheer from the toosi who will welcome him to the team continues on and we're trailing with George Russell but he's not improving his time in any sector at the moment and check and flag is out Russell is going to complete his session Alonzo Ricardo Magnuson gazley and okon the drivers exting in the second part of qualifying and it leaves us with a top 10 shootout with Lewis Howton Maxis staffen Lando Norris Carlos SS Oscar pastri George Russell charl Clair Sergio Perez Alex Alvin and ni I think 11 is better than [Music] expect well Alonzo has spoken and no more experienced driver in the history of the sport so I don't suppose he's going to have any argument from his team on that but what I'm loving here is four different manufacturers in the four top spots as we line up for the final part of qualifying and it's almost Scooby-Doo time isn't it it's that moment where the track conditions will not be any better you've got as much knowledge of the the track and the car as you're going to get and this is where you really see the bravest of the Brave go out and try and extract the maximum from their car it's probably the predicted top 10 that we thought we'd have all the the four big teams Perez safely through Alban showing that Williams have got Pace this weekend and getting into the top 10 and then hulkenberg always a fantastic qualifier just pipping Alonso by 100 of a second foren improved right at the end as well to jump into second place still on a that was on a scrub soft so with Hamilton having a bit of a toe helping him on his lap to go quickest some of the others further back having scruffier laps this is any one of the usual seven drivers I would say can take pole there is really nothing to separate well it is so well poised in the battle for pole position yeah honestly that was about all what had yeah agre good job but before we get to the Q3 shootout let's hear from the driver on debut Franco colapinto who is out in q1 your pace looked good you were close to Alex how frustrating is it then that the final out pit kind of went away yeah it is it is quite frustrating of course um I was expecting more after after serp three we had really good Pace um and I had a lot to improve as well after lap one in in in q1 so H I think I was expecting a Q2 was was very possible and and of course that that little mistake that I did cost me the lap so um a lot of things to to keep learning a lot to understand of the tires yet uh and it's a uh it's a lot of things going on um I am getting used to it and adapting quite quick but uh I still need to need to understand better there are many things so uh need to keep working of course tomorrow is going to be a very special day my first F1 race and it's going to be uh an important moment of my career H when uh I think my longest team now was like eight laps so tomorrow will be my longest one 57 or something so looking forward to tomorrow and and keep keep understanding the tires that I think is the most difficult part keep learning about the car and and hopefully we are going to get much better in thises good to hear from Franco colapinto who's looking forward to his first Formula 1 start tomorrow let's see if it's good to hear from Alex brundle over to you sir I I should hope so what it was good to hear from Nico hulkenberg taking his house through to Q3 he's making a bit of a name for himself as a bit of a Smooth Operator in qualifying and this is no exception especially in the first and the middle sector heading then down a lot of traffic around but it all stays nicely out of the way and Nico does a good job not to be distracted keeps it off the curb as they've all been doing out of that uh out of that first chicane to get the traction down really spins up that outside rear tire if you take it onto the curve and he's really neat and tidy through the Roger chicane listen to this super clean with the throttle pickup sharp through the lesmos JP you mentioned that he was missing a little bit of time through the final sector and that's what made him a tiny bit vulnerable and so it is and the reason is is the traffic which is just up the road as we make this historic run then down underneath uh the old banking he does get distracted by this car on the left hand side firing himself a little bit wide of this first Apex in ascari then a bit of a moment off the curb there for ni hulberg that's all that's all he needs to lose in that little bit of time to make him vulnerable to the attack of alono which of course uh didn't come to anything left himself in 10th position and through to Q3 and watch the lap from Fernando as well absolutely on it extracting everything he could from that Aston Martin has just had a little bit more today reminiscent of the time alono said put new tires put old tires put a rocket ship we're going to be 11th the house was 10th in this instance thank you very much Alex here we go then 12 minutes on the clock we are ready to countdown for a session that is always incredibly uh dramatic for the last five years Pole Position has been settled by less than a tenth of a second the rapid test of Monza means that the Grand Prix tomorrow if we don't get any safety car intervention it's one of the fastest of the year the fastest of the Year could run to as quick as 1 hour and 15 minutes but the intensity in the grand stands the occasion that racing at a century old circuit creates will they have the Scarlet cars to cheer from the front of the field that grand stand is dreaming of a Ferrari pole position but we are in this incredibly fortunate place where seven drivers will believe maybe Charlotte Clair wants a bit more front end but there will be multiple drivers DC who believe that they're going to do it yeah and that's the that's the mainset the absolutely should have when you head out irrespective of where you were in the previous session irrespective of what your problems were you've got to move on and that's I think in sport you see it so often don't you it's all about the next Corner the next point the next opportunity and uh this is the the glory moment for a race driver where your Grand Prix car will never go quicker than when in qualifying maximum engine mode brand new tires absolutely on the allowed weight limit and you're set loose on a historic racetrack it's a wonderful moment isn't it Julian it's one of the Thrills isn't it as fast as any car can possibly go around this circuit and these drivers are about to feel that hooking it Up 5 1 half km six real turns or six combinations of turns it it is simple compared to so many other circuits but with breaking zones being critical slipstream being critical gravel around the track it's so easy to just make small mistakes that have a critical difference the other thing I'd say with this is I think Monza has had more than most circuits the first run of Q3 being defining so all of these guys that think they're in pole pole contention they've got to try and absolutely bury it on this first lap because we've seen slipstream messing around on the final runs we've seen red flags we've seen gravel being bought onto the track this first run has often enough been the defining one it's about performing at the crucial moment of the weekend it is tight in Formula 1 it is competitive in Formula 1 there are multiple teams hoping for Paul the cheer that abounds this circuit is for the Ferrari cars heading out onto the racetrack here's the man with the most recent pole position in Formula 1 Lando Norris you can see it from the graphic but he's placed inside the top five for all of the last five races was disappointed with fifth in Belgium on pole after the summer break in the Netherlands can he go back to back this is a day where the driver is going to make the difference it was great as the cars left the pet lanee there we had to re shot showing the different iterations of design Solutions we saw that one as well yeah B stens having some difficulty getting the pit Lane position that he would like that wasn't quite as bad I think as the McLaren issue earlier maybe a slight overreaction from Max but what I was going to finish on Alex as they build their way around to start the qualifying lap I love how there's so many different ways of interpreting the regulations from a distance the cars may all look the same but when you get up close there's all these little aerodynamic you know cooling solutions and aerodynamic solutions that the engineers the brilliant men and women that design and build these race cars and then give them over to these guys the Formula One drivers to go out and prove their worth Red Bull there Christian H watching on Max of stappen winless in the last five grand prix and the unsafe release noted by race control into the path of Max a stapper I think that'll be fine I agree with DC I think Max made a bit of a Moun out of that one but what he has done is get himself in between the two Ferraris so even though czecho is starting a flying lap and he's actually the first of the main contenders going round then it's pestry then it's Norris sitting behind his teammate Max has got himself between Carlos and charl Clair for a toe well that was one for all Zack br seem to be the ever lingering shot of the CEO when we want to see the race cars out there being pushed to the Limit and here we have pastri coming through cover Grandy heading down to the second chicane all on the line now this is when it matters you got to deliver in both part both runs in Q3 the crowd will be in full voice whoever is hitting the front lot of speed through the first lesmo for Oscar pastri but Lando Norris has gone through that first sector even faster remember one year ago it was piastri out qualifying Lando Norris The Benchmark has been set by Alex Alvin he's done a 1 minute 20.8 but the contenders that is such a wide tur in from Oscar piastri going all in in Q3 yeah it's h not quite as good as you mentioned his teammate and also that's been surpassed by Saints but we've seen an opening t for Perez which is better than he's had at 20.0 round the final corner for Oscar piastri so aggressive low fuel high speed piastri to the line fastest as you would expect for McLaren the form team in Formula 1 but Lando Norris is trying to take that place away Lando Norris up through the gears over the line gets ahead of his teammate by three hundreds of a second so many more contenders to come though including Carlos signs he's only third what about Max V staffen in the Red Bull the world championship leader is fifth that lap has not gone to plan sh clir always a master when it counts in qualifying but he's behind his teammate at the moment we've ticked off the McLaren the Ferraris and the Red Bulls it's now over to the Mercedes pair of Russell and Hamilton and can George Russell find his way in a super tight battle between the two McLaren can he find any Improvement to get near it third he doesn't quite get on McLaren pace well what about Hamilton he is behind George Russell Norris and his teammate piastri Russell and his teammate Hamilton Signs and his teammate lir Perez who has now qualified Max of staffen all season long is the lead red B yeah that's something you don't see any day never mind every day so uh we expect bapen must have been an issue on that lap he lost 610 in the final corner he was absolutely on it between sort of the Claren in the Mercedes and he's had a mistake in the final Corner a big snap of oversteer and lost it all the way on the run to the line so foren well out of place so many of them very close but McLaren provisionally locking out the front row as they did in Budapest separated by three hundreds of a second B all this set shocking [Music] well it's all relative there is some group but when they operate at the uh limits that they do they're hyper sensitive and uh still an unhappy Max for stpp him with that balance but the potential is there to move himself a bit further up definitely out of position all the cars are on the edge that's the thing we saw piastri have a bit of a Dan on the way into a scar I wasn't sure how he'd be able to keep his foot in having looked like he took more out of it but here's the over steer that Max had at parabolica and that is what cost him a significant amount of time all the way up to the line then and he lost 610 total in the final sector maybe there was a bit in a scar but that was certainly a meaty chunk there from Max and he can uh he can put that right on the next run yeah not much the team can do for him other than put the new set of tires on and hope that the the fact that there is sometimes small variations in performance for whatever reason they're so sensitive we've talked about this before they're like princess and the P they can feel tiny tiny differences when they're effectively sliding drifting these cars at incredibly high speed not in the way that you would classically see drift cars of course smoke sliding off their tires but they've got to be on the edge of adhesion and it's uh well look at the data take a breath go out you got one final run to make the difference Max was quicker than the mcclaren's both of them in the first sector he lost a smidgen in the middle sector but there was not that much to choose so he's OB he's obviously not happy with the overall grip level but for two3 of the lap he's in P contention and new set of tires so long as it's a clean final run I would still expect them to be up there but of course the McLaren are going to be trying to find pushing each other only 300s between them they're still in a direct fight with each other as well for pole no team orders as yet so we uh we hear from the McLaren Camp there's there's so much still at stake yeah Hamilton got the advantage of a slipstream on Russell on that lap interesting to see if they send them out in a different order for the final run it's actually incredible how they have somehow ended up in Noah AR formation isn't it McLaren ahead of Mercedes ahead of Ferrari ahead of Red Bull Sergio Perez hasn't out qualified Max stappen all season long it's the only active pairing of teammates that that is currently the case for and hulkenberg and Alban they're going to have a private battle for who lines up in ninth place because we have a battle royale for pole position the track will be at its best at this stage of the weekend the fuel will be low the speed will be high and the driver has got to do that calculation of risk versus reward how much are you going to push into turn one how much are you going to DARE over those curbs at the escari chicane and can you keep it all together by the time that you come out of the parabolica corner and head to the main Grand stands and that Checkered Flag key moment of the entire weekend coming up right now yeah we've got vaton lined up to position himself for slipstream on Perez so Perez is going to be the first to break the beam at the start Finish Line they've actually gone a little bit earlier not wanting to get involved in any any sort of having to reposition yourself uh with other cars so uh looks like L Clair is going to be last person out onto track Norris has gone ahead of piastre so again the sort of Noah's Arc that you mentioned Julian is the case for uh the way they're positioning themselves on track and psychologically if you're the the the second you know you're the teammate and you got your teammate ahead of you you you know you got the the opportunity to pick up that distant tour and it does make a difference Red Bull have to go out first now they if they don't they leave things too many things up to chance and this would be a nightmare qualifying for them on a circuit that's not that easy to overtake but stappen has to haul himself up the order and if you go out behind the McLaren the Mercedes the F whoever else you open the door for yellow flags gravel they have their Destiny in their own hands with this decision so they will go early to try and respond for stampen has not had the easiest weekend across the practice sessions he needs this to be a classic Max for stap and lap to get in contention he starts his Grand Prix in eighth place and the McLaren are one and two that is the S sort of Point swing that the woking base team desperately want Perez is a few seconds up the road heading to the second chicane might get a benefit of a distant toe for stapen looking for his best lap of the weekend yeah tight enough through the first shaan maybe a little bit lazyy on the front axle see I I think he's a little bit tentative for me he doesn't look as aggressive as we'd normally see from staffen healthy do of front end through the first lesmo and his teammates gone off in the second lesmo and th dust in his face he not improving at this stage he is close though to the first sector time of Lando Norris dropping back in the middle part of the lap the stappa not on for a personal best he needs the parabolica to go a lot better they're going to pick their way past the Mercedes that's Perez who's gone off he left a cloud of gravel in the way of aaen he peels out of the way of his teammate where does this lap put Max aaen it is going to be an improvement from eighth place but everyone else is going to have the right of reply a stappen across the line only to seventh a huge moment in the context of the world championship and now it's the battle for pole position between the McLaren the Ferraris and the Mercedes and Norris improving middle sector of the laugh as he goes through ascari is the best so far the Ferraris are flying in the first part of the lap as well though McLaren now have to execute pole position for Norris to make the most of this situation the Mercedes will also be able to come back as well but it's Lando Norris trying to take backto back pole positions in Formula 1 for the first time in his career can he get there and extend the advantage he can it's a 1193 to beat L signs he's in the mix as well but first of all Oscar piastri looking for a maiden pole he's not going to get there over to Ferrari and Carlos s who gets to third charir trying to do what he's done two times before he's the lead Ferrari on the grid but it's the second row and now only the Mercedes can deny McLaren a front row lock out I don't think they're doing enough it doesn't look we've got Hamilton and uh Russell trading who was better in the first and second sector but this is going to have to be Mighty if it's going to change anything George Russell trying to be the lead Mercedes on the grid can he get on terms with the Ferraris he can can Hamilton join him on the second row or go better no only sixth for Lewis Hamilton McLaren have a front row lockout in Monza for the first time since 2012 and Lando Norris has two pole positions in seven days he's rival for the championship is in seventh in Formula 1 2024 it's game on Lando Norris on pole for the Italian Grand Prix this is huge this could be one of the big turning points in the season I know zanol was emphatic but the gap on a circuit that is so different to zanol has been continued McLaren on the front and now vapen with a scruffy qualifying is only seventh on a circuit that is not that easy to pass on absolutely huge for McLaren yeah and the thing that really stands out for me is the confidence the confidence in the body language of the car the confidence obviously from Norris behind the wheel to keep it together no mistakes in that qualifying session absolutely brilliant that's the thing that's separating him and pastu right now pastu is still looking a little bit Scrappy that McLaren is absolutely beautiful and Max needed half a second to even get up to six oh La I'm sorry my bad okay mate I'm sorry your uh lap was good enough for pole cool mean uh your setup was amazing what loveely too congrats he's a cool operator isn't he he knows there is an opportunity developing what a sight fando Norris on pole position in Formula 1 for the fifth time in his career backto back and those qualifying performances are setting the foundation there are 70 points in the Formula 1 World Championship George Russell will be the lead Mercedes on the grid once again for the 12th time on the weekend that his teammate was announced for next year kimy Antonelli will be alongside him and Russell will assume the mantle as the team leader the seven time world champion heading to Ferrari Hamilton in the end not tooo far away at all less than 2/10 of a second but that equates the sixth place in the end Norris's Improvement on his second run took the margin from 300s to 1110th Russell got within a tenth uh there were hunds of a second between third and fourth on the grid Oscar piastri still chasing that Maiden Formula 1 pole position but he equals his personal best and he's got his teammate for company I just remember that they hit each other at the first turn last year in the Grand Prix this time they'll be fighting for Grand Prix Victory well you do Throw It Forward beautifully it's not the easiest of first Corners in Formula 1 it's not the easiest of second Corners so a lot could change within that first lap but what a great start to the the weekend look how cool he looks in the background when he throw out a little little handshake there to an old rival from all the way back in carting mon out 700s he'd be on the front row he's sick that's incredible is it's impossibly tight behind Norris who's got a a clear T between himself and his teammate it's going to be Perez on his second run and this is going to be the second lesmo staffen goes through this gravel Cloud it's a disaster isn't it because they they positioned each other so that Max could have the optimum toe and then the gravers come back on the on the track there and there's a dust cloud which can only be off pting for the driver behind dipped wheel2 but he's always been in the top 10 whenever he's been into qualifying here ven has started from pole only once in the last nine races and I know he did win qualifying in Spar and had to take that engine penalty but that's not Championship form at all no Earth's going on with that car it's it's it's gone from being on Rails to looking really quite difficult to drive it certainly has and without the the top speed to promise you know a chance of overtaking tomorrow as well this was Perez we saw the dust and it came from this corner the second at lesmo corner that that that's the handful you're talking about Martin yeah underair is wandered wide and that will have uh chewed the underneath the car a little bit and then of course that sends Max for stappen who's already gone wide himself in the first lesmo that sends him some dust to drive into which doesn't help him either oh dear that wasn't Red Bull's day but it was McLaren's day and David Val SEI has the microphone in his hand and a McLaren driver in front of him sh to everyone to Oscar SP second Today front row for tomorrow how was your lap man you were there eh yeah the the first lap in Q2 in Q3 was was quite good just the second one uh not quite enough which uh I feel like I've said a few too many times this year so uh no still a good performance and uh a really good team effort you know I think the The Field's been incredibly tight this weekend so I think I said on the radio you know there was no guarantee of a front row lock out for us so um yeah an amazing effort to to be able to pull that off yeah fantastic moment for you and for your team what you what do you expect about tomorrow race because seems that you are in a perfect moment with your car yeah I mean starting a bit further up the front than last week is definitely a a positive for myself uh it's obviously a long run down to turn one so starting second here is is not always the worst thing but um yeah let's see what the the tires do tomorrow it's been uh a little bit different to what we used to in Monza so uh yeah could be a pretty exciting race and with such a a tight feel at the front I think it will be very exciting well done congratulation front row from Tomorrow Oscar pastri and now we have George Russell good to see George Russell third position just at the end how was your lap and how was your car to drive yeah it was great uh and up P3 a little bit better than I expected because it was a really tough session q1 and Q2 and fortunately we saved it until the end not too far behind the McLaren they're so fast at the moment and um we're working so hard to to catch them up but I'm yeah super happy with that and tell me about tomorrow because you had some amazing race this season what do you expect and what do you think about Monza I think it's going to be a tight battle everybody so so close out there so exciting for F1 know we've all been waiting for this competition and knowing if you do a great job you got a chance of Victory so you know I'm I'm pretty pumped for for tomorrow get some nice pizza tonight to fuel me up and a bit of extra a bit of extra weight so not too light tomorrow and hopefully uh we can fight for a good result looking forward for it Well Done congratulations third position for George Russell with Mercedes Lando very well done pman fifth of his career Lon or pman in mon tell me talk me through your lap my friend yeah um thank you I mean another poll which is amazing so like uh like Oscar said to have two cars first and a first and second um when the field has been as tight as it has all weekend it's a little bit of a surprise but a nice one so uh big well done to the team done an amazing job um uh honestly my lab was it hurts me to say it was not a great lab um my my Q3 run one was but run two was a little bit more and uh we're still getting enough for p so a little bit surprised again but um but very very happy congratulation for it seems that you are building up a fantastic moment for yourself you're racing so well you are always competitive your car is helping you
