um but for now we're going to check out will and Harper yay now if you don't know see here if you haven't seen it it's called will and Harper on Netflix it is a documentary that will frell and an ex uh head riter for SNL Harper steel they embark on a uh cross country road trip together after Harper comes out as a trans woman that's right yeah we're going to watch the trailer for this right quick Jesus Christ these guys all right hi there I'm will frell one of the greatest actors in the world a long time ago back when I was at Satur Night Live I met a guy who was hired as a writer the same week I was hired he wrote a bunch of sketches for me and eventually became the head writer of SNL and over the years he became one of my closest friends and then one day I got this email hey Will something I need you to know I'll be transitioning to live as a woman I don't doubt that will is my friend but I'm not Andrew steel anymore it was just whoa I love this country so much I just don't know if it loves me back right now Harper would you want to do a road trip as this new version of yourself and at the same time figure out what this all means to us do you recognize this guy is a this is a Hollywood movie star no that's okay roll up the [Music] window were you a little worried about how to talk to me when I came out to you yeah I'm probably a little nervous there are no ground the documentary in in the [ __ ] preview we just watched when he pulls up to and I'm going to get to that I'm going to get to the meat of the documentary but I just want to premise this by letting you know how unfunny these these Stars these comedians have become he he shows up to pick up uh Harper and gets out of the car of course he's fully gray now same haircut fully gray gets out of the car with with like one of those neck pillows like he's about to fly like an old lady flying he has a little thermos of of probably some tea or soup he's an old lady now look I'll say this first before I obliterate at this [ __ ] trailer I'll say this first I could see look if you're on the left I'll say the left for the sake of the conversation but if you're on the side of woke and progressiveness and you think that becoming trans is the most Ultra Brave thing you can do or coming out as gay or or nonbinary or gender fluid fluid whatever it is pansexual asexual t- seexual P seexual whatever it is if you think that's the bravest thing that a human being can do then this is the most epic thing piece of production to come out ever I mean this is going to be groundbreaking thought-provoking tear jerking I mean this is so I get that I get it and of course you know in the in the trailer let's break this trailer down that's probably the best way to go about this let's break this down so course if you're famous in Hollywood having trans friends are fine hell it'll probably help your career but in in my truth in my reality if one of my friends my deepest friends was to come out to me as a trans person me remaining as close to you as I was first of all isn't possible because here's the thing you can't have your cake and eat it too if you transition to be a woman and you you you want to be treated as a woman right that's the point you want me to treat you as a woman well I am not as close friends with women as I am men naturally I my closest friends are not women they are men because we relate to each other I shouldn't have to explain that so if one of my closest guy friends transitions into a woman I'm really having to spell this out because people that are going to be mad at me need this SP spelled out for them if you transition into a woman our friendship is now altered forever I don't care what a documentary says that's the reality that's the fact for normal people now you're a woman so now we are not as close close of friends just off the rip we are not as close of friends cuz now we don't have as much in common as I thought we did do I hate you no am I going to dislike you over that decision no I don't care because that's your choice but your choice is going to come with consequences that you need to be prepared to deal with period and again it's not disrespect it's not hatred it's real I'm going to remain very very close with the other guy friends that I have and you and I are just going to remain friends will we talk as much probably not cuz you're going to act like a woman you're going to want to be treated like a woman I don't talk to other women that much I am married okay and when I wasn't married no offense ladies talking to you there's usually an endgame that I shouldn't have to spell out for you sure I I have females in my life that I am friends with they can call me they can ask me for advice vice versa but you're still women I'm still a man we don't have a lot in common we can pretend and we can bring up [ __ ] that we have in common and and try to make a case for how similar we are but we're not we're not and if you are a woman if you transition into being a woman and you want to be treated as such well the whole dynamic of our friendship just changed the whole dynamic of your friendship with anyone just changed and you should be okay with that that's equality right 30 seconds into this trailer and that's I've already gone off the [ __ ] hinges let's let's play this I don't doubt that will is my friend but I'm not Andrew steel anymore it was just whoa I love this country so much I just don't know if it loves me back right now Harper would you want to do a road trip as this new version of into a documentary like you're like you're creating some narrative and then solving said narrative in the documentary it's it's just I guess there was a uh 5 minute Hollywood Reporter interview where we at on the podcast guys we're an hour and 5 I'll play this and then we will uh get the [ __ ] out of here it was extraordinary that we could get all of our it was extraordinary that we could get all of our friends to come and and participate I have more friend than that no one's debating we name the those who turned it yeah we one of the things that got cut out of the documentary we counted how many friends each each had okay do you remember like about Harper has 420 friends yes yes and uh will I have 30 will has about 30 a lot of acquaintances Hollywood Reporter I think we both I'll speak for Harper please please I'll do some man playing I love to speak for Harper yes uh no I think we both feel fortunate that we met a group of people throughout our careers early on continue to meet people who are who are just quality individuals who are um not only good and funny at what they do but also just you know a little bit of luck of the draw um but maybe because we're so great we draw those people to us that's why it is and I yeah I just think the comedy world breeds its own um little inner groups you know people who speak the same kind of joke language and the same kind of Comedy language and then you get to know the ones that fit with your sensibility and it is an Island of Misfit Toys so I think you know you do kind of get drawn to each other and then uh and the friendships become that much closer because of the I remember Colin Quinn once we were I was my first year at Saturday Night Live and he looks out around the room and goes look it's a room full of class clowns yes so all of us were the same person getting to this place and so I think I feel super fortunate to have come upon this group of people the conception of the whole discussion for some reason in my head boring was a documentary and uh show me how you suck a guys Co the last time I'm going to ask you if I don't want to exploit our friendship but this could I think be just a wonderful way for us to explore this topic obviously for for me to learn uh ask all the questions that I have uh about what you're going through um and why are you gay who you are have you changed and I think we eventually landed on the same square that if we actually could convince someone to film it but maybe it would be something that people would watch and it would just is this going to go like going anywhere show off the fact that two people can have a conversation about this I had two reasons for doing it one of was it's kind of selfish it was only my second year transition and I she was very badly raped you see sort of dissipate some of the nervousness around it walking around with a big shot like well was going to be helpful to me thank you um yes that's the Last of Me we had both knowingly and unknowingly made lists of things we wanted to ask each other so those moments were like here's here's something I'm G to ask you that that was like me checking the next thing on on my little black notebook I had with me and Harper was doing the same yeah it's 17 days it's 16 hours a day it's over 250 hours of footage that was C down to less than two hours scratch Canyon which Speaking kind of an amazing cinematic moment but we come across the couple is it the therapist yes who's a retired therapist who uh wants to ask transition in La Harper actually gets to help her uh kind of work through some issues that that uh that she back in her practice felt ill equipped to advise someone who was what a disaster this this Harper steel is I fought to be decent about this but I'm watching this interview and and I'm I'm looking at it a before picture as well and again I I go back to my point of what is the point of this cuz you look like a [ __ ] disaster like you're not a lot of a lot of dudes out there transition to feel pretty to feel beautiful to feel like women cuz we are not pretty and beautiful we are men we are slobs but this this is not that this is a a disaster a pile of [ __ ] I just go through the same situation and that was a that was such a just powerful full circle moment that happened obviously you know on the spot what is a movie classic movie or television show that you have It's a Wonderful Life pretended to have seen have you ever seen anything things I've done no never all right next I had a really embarrassing moment when uh Henry Henry white Henry Hill Henry Hill Henry Hill someone was talking about how they were going as Henry Hill for hallowen no no the the oh oh Hank Hank Hill no Henry the the the meth show oh everyone's favorite show of all time Breaking Bad Breaking Bad John Carlo was here earlier wait but who's Henry Hill Henry White Walter White see I've never seen breaking B I almost with Henry Hill do you hear how mundane and and boring these quote unquote entertainers have become it's funnier to listen to anyone else talk than these people I said it but they're they're too famous that's what the problem is well that's that that's will and Harper um I might force myself to watch and review this when does it come out September 27th this month okay I might watch I might force myself to sit through this or at least parts of it just to have a nice little review for you guys cuz what a [ __ ] train wreck and it just seems dull like how many people out there want to watch this like who
