Introduction welcome back to the channel everybody and today it is the beginning of my 2024 NFL Deep dive series and we're starting with the number 32 team the Carolina Panthers now I promise I'm not trolling Panthers fans this is just how the math worked out even though I do think you guys are a terrible fan base and your team is terrible I'm not trolling you guys even though I've had a lot of told youo moments I am not trolling you guys this is for Real Caroline's the number 32 team in the NFL I did do a little bit different here from my last uh deep dive series which ironically is what started my rivalry with Carolina Panthers fans you know so there's going to be a little bit uh the different math involved you know some uh things like for example cornerback tackling uh or sorry cornerback run support I used as a letter grade more so than a number grade uh just because you know the outside corners when it comes to the Run game they're not nearly as um They Don't Really contribute as much as say an inside slot guy linebackers linemen safeties all that kind of stuff so I didn't want to skew the numbers too much to one team or another because they might happen to have a really good run support corner but the overall Run game is not good and then that bumps the numbers around whatever uh how I got to the overall grade is the following uh gr out the offense the pass offense individually from the rush offense uh and then 60% of the score from the pass offense was added to 40% of the running score and that's how I got the total offensive grade on the defensive side of the ball is the same thing 60% pass defense 40% Rush offense uh Rush defense uh made the final grade and then when it came to the defense and the offense combining themselves it was 60% of the offense 40% of the defense to create the full team score uh and then I graded out the coaches you're going to see that right there at the top we're going to start with the coaches uh and I took 30% of the overall coaches score and added it to 70% of the overall team score I thought that was a good formula it really worked out uh the numbers the best the best that uh I could come up with the top of my head there was a lot of teams that are really topheavy in terms of overall Talent which would have definitely thrown this off had I not valued the coaching staff out of that number so there's a lot of work it's a lot of work I appreciate you guys being here let's get into it let's get started the first one of the Year try not to keep you guys too long but we're going deep that's the whole point so like and comment subscribe and we will start right now let's get to it so this is my 26th ranked coaching staff which is actually Coaching Staff one spot better than the last coaching staff was last year uh I have the 28th ranked head coach it's Dave Canales now he's a brand new head coach so it's really hard to rank new head coaches especially first year head coaches uh but I put him at 28 uh one of the better first year head coaches that were ranked uh he got this job because of the work he did with Gino Smith and Baker Mayfield the last two years that's basically why Dave Canalis got the job his work in Seattle and his work in Tampa Bay the last two years revitalizing the careers of two quarterbacks uh they brought him in hoping that he can do that here with Bryce young who did have a very rough rookie season and he brought in uh my 20th ranked offensive coordinator Brad idzik uh who is coming over from Tampa Bay with him uh he was the wide receivers coach in Tampa Bay so there's sort of like that quarterback uh at the head coach and then you get the receivers uh to try and coordinate what they had in Tampa Bay here in Carolina they do have Adam Thelen they do have Deontay Johnson who they traded for they do have Xavier leet who they drafted so it's not like they don't have bodies they also have Jaton Sanders tight end who can be a split out wide receiver so it's not like they don't have the bodies it's just the lack of experience right now is what's really in question and can a guy who had a lot of success as an offensive coordinator like Dave Canalis take over as the head coach uh there's one guy who seems to have nine lives who didn't take over as a head coach despite people expecting and that is a jro Evo uh the defensive coordinator who's been here through like three regimes now uh and you know he's my 16th ranked defensive coordinator I'm giving him a little bit more credit than I did last year uh but that defense last year was still bad and it was bad with more Talent than what they have right now on the defensive side of the ball so they are in a rebuilding stage significantly on the defensive side when it comes to adding young players losing veterans so Evo's got to prove that he's exactly what Panther fans have been yelling and screaming about this entire time which is that he's great he's amazing he's one of the best in the league right now he's middle of the pack for me we'll see how that plays out throughout the season and how he adjusts his scheme based upon his Personnel also you know they got rid of Brian Burns who's your number one Edge rusher well right now it's jvon Clowny so I don't know about that I don't know how you know nothing against him but eo's got his work cut out for him there he's got to developed DJ Johnson who they drafted last year uh you know Derrick Brown's a really great player they got to figure out who's playing next to him in all these situations they got an aging linebacker group Sha Thompson ain't the same you know JC horn can't stay healthy at the cornerback position they traded Dante Jackson so they're short in that area as well you know they lost Jeremy chin the safety you know you got Xavier Woods who's you know still one of the more underrated players in the entire league uh at the safety position but he's got his work cut out for him man he really does and when you get a wide receivers coach going into the offensive coordinator position you know how is he going to gather everyone together uh you know we know that him and Canalis have worked together they know how to work together so there's a huge Advantage there and that's usually why you see a lot of position coaches get coordinator jobs uh particularly on the side of the ball of the first year head coach because they're bringing guys they trust they know how to work with so they could probably outperform the 26th best coaching staff but it's going to take again it's going to take a lot of work cuz the talent level on the team is also so incredibly low in so many key spots so they're going to have to sort of work double time it's going to be interesting to see how much time they're going to get because they're dealing with a very impatient front office as well you know the patience for Evo was clearly pretty high but that's on the head coaches who elected to keep him there not necessarily the ownership group who is firing head coaches seemingly every other year uh if not every year uh so you know the Carolina Panthers ownership is going to have to really calm this one down and they're probably going to have to accept that this Panthers team is not going to be good for another couple years while you get an undersiz Bryce young developed while you figure out the best five for your offensive line while you figure out what's going on in the defensive side of the ball talent-wise so this this coaching staff hopefully for Panther fans is going to have time to develop just as much as the players uh are going to need time to develop as well and then you probably three four year down the line you'll probably have a coaching staff that's in the upper half of the league rather than looking at you know bottom six so let's talk about the quarterback a quarterback that Quarterbacks was very high on coming into last season and he just ended up in one of the worst situations a quarterback could have ended up in a organization that just was in flux and Bryce Young comes in as my 31st quarterback in this this season 72 grade he's got a great backup at Andy Dalton who hopefully under Dave Canalis is going to be able to actually help Bryce young develop between the years because Bryce young really does have it in every other aspect whether it be athletically whether it be with his arm he's really done a great job uh developing that aspect of his game but then the difference between a great college player and a great Pro is always the ability to process the defense the ability to escape the pocket the ability to extend plays to find the open receiver to pre- snap breeds all things that Bryce young really struggled with in his rookie year which is almost expected you know there's very few rookie quarterbacks who don't struggle with those things throughout their season and he was not in a great situation last year he did not have a great coaching staff despite Avengers assembled nonsense that I was hearing so now maybe Dave Canales is the new quarterback Whisperer of the NFL and this is going to be a huge jump for Bryce Young And if Ry young takes a huge jump then this entire team's going to take a huge jump because it's not that he's short on weapons that's for sure but he's drastically got to improve he's they got to get him in the film room they got to get him U making some better pre- snap reads I think they should also maybe simplify the offense because I think that Bryce young can run an offense very similar to Baker Mayfield I don't know that their skill sets are all that different you know they're both a little bit smaller they both have really good arm talent and they both have Escape ability and they got some mobility in there to make plays with their legs when required uh so it could be the perfect situation for brce Young's development uh is just treat him like Baker Mayfield with with obviously less experience and allow him to maybe work one side of the field and then get things more complicated use play action um I think that would really be uh something that would lead this team to more success I just I think that later in the year is when you're really going to get a chance to see that and I do wonder if in that time is Bryce young going to get beat up is he G to end up you know injured due to his size and miss a couple games and then just sort of throw the development into chaos there there's a huge chance that that is the case uh but they do have Andy Dalton as a backup they drafted uh they picked up Jack plumber as an un uh undrafted free agent uh which is which was fun that's a that's a fun name to have and any time you see plumber and quarterback and you're my generation that's a good time but this is Bryce Young's team don't get a twisted you know Andy Dalton's not going to be beating him out in training camp Bryce Young's the week one starter and and I would say regardless of how he plays he's starting all 17 games this year if he's healthy enough to be on the field so this is what this is the key project for Dave Canalis the new head coach in particular this right here the giant investment they made they traded technically they traded the number one overall pick in this year's draft for him they technically chose him over Caleb Williams so whether Bryce young likes it or not those two guys are destined to be compared for their entire careers they do have a pretty decent back field as well they have the tied for 20th uh in terms of their uh Back Backfield Field and starts with chuba hubard who's going to be the starter he's going to be the you know the top three down back uh he gets an 84 grade and then there's the rookie Jonathan Brooks and they surprisingly took the first running back off the board after spending all that money on my sanders which again I could have told you that wasn't going to work everyone was talking about mil Sanders coming off a career year he was coming off a career year with the best offensive line in the NFL anyone could have ran behind that line and had a great year and I think that proved it last year but chuba hubard and Jonathan Brooks you know hub's uh rookie deals coming up um so there's just a lot going on in this backfield I think Jonathan Brooks throughout the year is probably end up taking over that starting job uh in terms of their play in the passing game they're tied for 13th chuba Harbor gets a 75 Jonathan Brooks gets a 72 grade so that's you know that's a pretty good uh it's pretty close to what they already have so we could end up seeing at some point maybe like a 5050 type of a thing I think my sanders even though he grades out pretty decently I don't know that he stays on the team I don't know that he makes the team I think there's if they can have an out with him uh in this contract I expect them to take it uh just cuz that's they're paying a third string running back at this point they kind of gave gave up on the guy uh but I'd like chuba hubber as a blocker a little bit you know he's a competent receiving back a competent third down back uh but I do expect him to sort of be less and less of a contributor in one aspect of the game whether it being early Downs or on third down to Jonathan Brooks as Jonathan Brooks continues to get healthy from his injury that he suffered in college last year uh because he despite that he still the number one running back taken in the draft they still invested highly in him so that has that has to be taken into account that they see a big role for him long term they also have the number 14 Weapons receiving group uh in the entire league they're top three receivers it's a pretty good-looking group here uh you know Deontay Johnson and Adam th I give them both 79s um I feel like their ability to contribute to this team is about equal uh uh different skill sets they got a lot of good balance here Xavier Legette who sounds like boomhower from King of the Hill gets a 77 grade one of the higher graded wide receivers coming out as a rookie but this is this is a really good group to be giving Bryce young you know in the passing game you know you you saw the he's got a good receiving back he's got good receivers you know will the age of Adam Thelen start to kick in you know Adam thel had a great year last year as really the only competent receiver on the roster so as they added more guys here uh how much does that affect his production I think that's something to watch uh but I think by the end of the year he could probably end up being of these three receivers the one who gets the least amount of snaps uh I think that's possible as well especially as the season go goes on you want to maybe give him a little bit more time uh and I expect Xavier Legette to probably take over as a number one receiver by the end of the year sort of like Jonathan Brooks I think they've they've really started to rebuild the Weaponry of this offense you know for Bryce young with the drafting of Legette and Jonathan Brooks but they also put them in situations where they aren't expected to be like these Mega stars and these Mega contributors right away way and I think that's really a really smart move by the organization to do that you put two veterans out there you got two veterans in the back field there so they can learn they can learn how to be a pro you know and the depth of this receiver group isn't that bad either you know David Moore is there 70 Terrace Marshall Jonathan Mingo Amir Smith marett they all got really they all can come in and contribute as wide receiver fours and five that's going to be where where the real competition is I think the problem with Terrace Marshall and Jonathan mingle in particular is that they weren't drafted by this regime so when you're not drafted by a particular coaching staff in front office whatever and you're not someone like Bryce young who they invested a lot in that usually means that you're much more Expendable and I think when they drafted Xavier Legette that sort of did that for Terence Marshall and Jonathan Mingo sort of made them the backup to Xavier Legette so they're going to be really competing for that role I expect only one of them to make the team just for that reason you know Smith marett is a great special teams contributor so I feel like he sort of makes a team and then David Moore uh would be a backup slot type receiver coming over from Tampa Bay who has experience in the Canalis offense so if things start to sort of go wrong he can be somebody they can put in just cuz they know he knows what he's doing in the offense he knows all the calls he knows all the alerts he knows all that stuff from his time in Tampa where he actually when he got on the field last year for Tampa and the year before that he actually didn't play that bad so he's not by any means somebody you want as one of your top three receivers but as a sub wide receiver for I think he can be in this system a highlevel contributor compared to other people in that same spot on the depth chart they also come in with a 22nd ranked tight end and it's rookie gavon Sanders who really fell in the draft and I understand why he didn't work out very well uh you know he ran a little bit slower than people would have liked uh so he he understandably fell down draft fors but I think he fell a little way too far you know where Carolina really got a steal there because I think he can develop into a middle of theack tight end and a for a great offense if you have a good great receiving core that's really all you need you need a tight end that can just be a doit all I think Tavon Sanders can be that guy I think certainly taking over for Tommy tremble who again you have Tommy tremble and you had Ian Thomas who got this experience there so gavon Sanders can be eased into it even though I think he separates himself from the rest of the group much better in terms of his actual abilities uh I do I do think Tommy tremble is still going to get a lot of work uh Jordan Matthews former wide receiver he started getting another chance there that's an interesting signing I don't know that they keep more than three tight ends uh just cuz you know it's the modern NFL you can always get a fourth tight end if you need to someone goes on the IR so I think it'll be Sanders tremble and probably Steven Sullivan or Ian Thomas competing for that last spot depending on what they prefer they prefer um Thomas's status on the team you know he never really worked out despite them paying him a little bit they always seem to be adding guys ahead of him and he was never really able to beat them out uh but you know not a bad start for them bringing in a rookie tight end uh I think he can get a potentially a lot of work especially with price young uh you know a quick passing game can get him open Quick in the flats and you know quick hitches and whip routes all that kind of stuff from the tight end position maybe you can split them out a little bit try to create some matchup problems uh so it'll be interesting to see how they utilize him uh considering you know we saw Kon get used last year he got used pretty inconsistently and the year before that Noah Fant uh in in uh in Seattle who didn't really ever contribute at a high level you know will dley kind of did I guess but he's a much better uh inline blocking tight end than a receiving tight end so it'll be intered to see how Canalis uses the tight end position considering they drafted one uh who conceivably is the starter coming into the season well O-Line folks now it's time to see some real problems and it's on the offensive line now credit words D they went out and they got two interior offensive linemen who are going to be instant contributors they are looking like they're going to kick Austin Corbett into Center which is why he gets the grade of 50 for pass blocking here but they added Damen Lewis gets a 69 Robert hunt gets an 81 so you've now upgraded your pass blocking still the 22 ranked offensive line in terms of pass blocking you know iky uanu needs to continue to develop there he had good rookie year didn't really have a all that great of a second year at least he didn't improve as much as people were hoping Taylor bowon is solid just a just a solid player you know what you're going to get from him he's top 10 at his position uh at right tackle every single year uh and even sometimes has top five level Seasons you know he's he's a solid as you can get but still 22nd you know this they got a lot a lot to put together and I think the center position is what really drags them down right now because Austin corbette is a guard he's played tackle even at some points and now he's moving into play center I don't know that's the best solution for them because they do have some depth pieces here but they don't really have anyone to step in at that Center position I feel like they had a huge opportunity in this D draft to add a center someone who could have came in could have started and I know they're really riding on Corbett's experience more than anything here but that's a huge huge risk to be to be doing that uh you know Andrew R is a rookie who is oh is he's their best best depth piece in terms of pass blocking but everyone else is definitely a guard tackle type and you're going to have to convert somebody again to the center position it's just it it it seems like it's a mess of a position and then you get to the Run blocking they are the 19th run blocking offensive line you know Damen Lewis who they brought in is not particularly known for that Austin Corbett again converted is Center he's just not it's just it drags it all down because you know you got iky uanu who came into the league as a great run blocker and that's really been his strength you know Taylor moton is good enough serviceable run blocker Robert Hunt is a is a good run blocker as well so how they figure out I feel like I feel like if they can just improve on the center if Austin Corbett comes in he plays like a top 15 Center then this is a top 15 offensive line probably in both aspects of pass blocking and run blocking but that's going to need a drastic improvement over what they had in the rest of the league losing losing Bradley Boseman I don't understand that you know Boseman you know maybe wanted to much going to the Chargers but I feel like if you kept him this would have made things so much better moving forward um CU you don't really have you know Cade ma is a really good run blocker he's serviceable run blocker that's where he can really actually compete for snaps if that's even a thing but because he's such a poor pass blocker compared to someone like Damen Lewis I don't think he gets on the field so Cade Maye kind of in the same spot as Austin Corbett is you know competing for Center snaps from guys who again were tackle played tackle in college a little bit played guard in college in the pros and now it's like you guys are both stuck having to try and play center uh I personally for the sake of the Panthers team hope that they kind of go out and get a center whoever may be on the market no one in particular really comes to mind but a true Center I think would at least be a slight improvement over what they have at the very least uh but you know maybe it's one of those things where you just want to put a veteran out there a high IQ football player like an Austin Corbett who's got all the experience he plays center and it helps Bryce young develop more I could see that logic as well and then next year worry about getting your true top level Center if Austin Corbett doesn't develop and become that throughout the year which at his stage in his career I wouldn't anticipate it so let's just break down the positional summaries here Offensive Positional Grades so they got the 72 quarterbacks 75 receiving backs 78.3 graded wide receivers 76 tight end and a 70.6 pass blocking you know the depth on the offense is actually pretty good up until you get to the offensive line in the passing game so that's a really that's a good sign at least for if they start to get uh injuries going around uh in the Run game quarterback run uh the grade for Bryce Young's run wasn't high enough for me to add as a contribution uh so you'll see that throw it as well I had 10 quarterbacks graded uh that became significant Run game contributors uh but running backs 84 they get 69 run blocking and their wide receiver tight end blocking I'm giving a c uh which I get the letter grade and then that sort of just is a percentage bump up for the overall grade in terms of depth they got good running back depth and again the offensive line dep just not there and the wide receiver tight end blocking is just one grade below so Offensive Totals when you look at the overall grade the overall offense gets a 73.7 two uh total score good good enough for 30th in the league their passing offense 74.4 for 29th and they're rushing offense 72.7 tied for 26th in the league and really I think we saw it their problems are going to start with pieces on the offensive line and making sure their quarterback can develop if their offensive line can get it together and the quarterback can play like a top 20 quarterback then this offense is obviously going to be much better than what these grades were but that's really all on the coaching staff being able to get those guys functioning getting a good scheme together that's easy to run and you know it's going to have high percentages of success for the quarterback in particular now let's move on to the defense and D-Line Pass Rush this is the encapsulation of what I was talking about with this defense they have the last ranked Edge rushing group in the entire league now Javon Clowny gets a great of 78 like I said I like him but at his age as a full-time three down Edge player that's not good you got DJ wanam who I'm just like I don't get it he's a certain he's one of those guys that just keeps getting a job uh in a bunch of different places um so but this is what you're dealing with guys that's why I was talking about you got to develop some of these younger guys and that's going to be on Evo and his staff you got to get a guy like DJ Johnson who right now he grades as my as the worst Edge rusher on the team that's not great you know you got Luigi villian you got Amari barno you got cbon Chas on who bust first round pick know eki Leota they're all almost equally as bad now DJ wanam is the best of this group to be the number two but it's going to be a boat race during training camp to get that number two Edge spot and you're really hoping that two of these guys between wanam Leota Chason barno villy and Johnson you're really hoping that two of these guys really show up so in that way J Davon clown he doesn't have to be your number one guy he he's best served as like a high-end number three you know play him early Downs bring him in in certain pass rushing packages I think you can get a lot out of him but if you're expecting cbon Chason to play all these Downs all season long it's not going to work it's just not doesn't matter how much I like Cayla uh Javon Clowney it it's not going to work if he is your top guy playing top guy snaps it's just not a thing it's just not going to work as for the interior rushers they bring in the number 30th group uh you know Derek Brown is great but again just like with the edge group who's your number two who's that second guy on the inside now that's coming in on third down to play next to Derek Brown who is a really good overall interior defensive lineman can play all three Downs really effectively can play across all the interior techniques just a great player uh but is it Shai Tuttle who's by my estimation the best option right now or is it one of these guys here is it rayquan Williams is it Nick Thurman ason Robinson you know they got Jayden kumed uh rookie is he the one that steps up and has to do it Le Brien Reay might be just just not nearly good enough it's the same scenario for the edge group you know unlike but unlike Javon Clowny Derrick Brown is somebody that you want on the field for all three Downs so there's an advantage there that you have over the edge group with the interior guys on passing downs but it's another situation where it's like man you're just so desperate to find somebody else because you just know that they're going to dedicate two guys to Derrik Brown at all times he's going to be the guy on the D line that they identify so it's going to be up to these other guys to manufacture that pass rush and when you got the last ranked Edge group and the 30th ranked interior group there's not a lot of pass rush coming the way of the of the opposing offense and when you got a guy with the experience of kurk cousins you got a guy with the experience of Derek Carr and you got the guy with the experience of Baker Mayfield in your division you're handing away six games to Great to teams that have actual really good weapons as well so you're hanging out this your defensive back group to dry here if you can't get a pass rush against Mike Evans Chris Godwin Drake London Kyle pittz Chris alive like there's a lot of talent out there so even if you have these quarterbacks who are like hovering around like top 15 top 20 quarterbacks if you can't get a rush on them it's they're still NFL quarterbacks if you can't rush an NFL quarterback they will pick you apart no matter who they are so that's the real fear that the Carolina Panthers are going to come into right now with this front four is the absolute inability to get after the quarterback Linebacker Coverage and here's their linebacker group for linebacker coverage and it's the 31st ranked linebacker group for pass coverage Josie juwel comes in with a 64 sha Thompson comes in with a 62 Panther fans it's not 2018 anymore okay it's not sha Thompson is certainly on the downside of his career is it because he's not surrounded by all this Talent anymore like he's used to that could be it you know he's not he's not capable or maybe comfortable as playing as freely as he used to he's definitely not going to feel that way with the current Talent level of this roster got the hiccups here so you don't really have a linebacker in coverage you don't really have it so now you're going to have tight ends and running backs where maybe now you got to play a lot of Zone and sort of manufacture coverage and hope that you run into teams that run running a lot of mesh and and whatnot you can run some cover two and get away with uh slowing these teams down that way uh but again just like the other position groups we covered there's not a lot of depth here they drafted Trevin Wallace in the third round to me that was a huge overdraft a tremendous overdraft there cuz to me I don't see how he gets on the field in these key situations when he's not even the best rookie on on the team in playing in pass coverage that's Michael Barrett so this is a really really interesting group in that I guess they drafted traven Wallace to sort of slowly work him in with Josie Jewel and sha Thompson already there but there's this key aspect of traven Wallace's game that he's going to really have to develop here in order for it not to be another situation where they overdrafted a player in the third round in backtack years on the defensive side of the ball who just won't end up being contributors DJ Johnson last year could that be traven Wallace this year now we're going to the cornerback group and this is the DB Coverage 26th ranked Corner group uh you got DNE Jackson you got Troy Hill and you got JC horn now JC horn grades out at of 73 and I know that Panther fans they did this last year you're screaming you're yelling you're hollering you're complaining about JC horn and his production when he plays and to that I say when he plays it's really tough to give somebody a high grade when they're never on the field and JC horn is almost never on the field that's just how it works how it is for him lots of injuries which is leading to low levels of overall production which means his contributions to the team aren't High they're minimal they there's a lot there's great contributions when he's actually on the field but they've been minimal and how long were they sustain this there was talks about trading him in the off season because of those reasons I guess they no team was valuing him you know I I valued him at like a fourth round pick and that seemed I guess that was not even what he was valued at because I feel like if they were going to get a fourth round pick for him they would have taken that cuz this quarterback class was actually really good so had they traded him I would have expected them to maybe go quarterback in the second round uh which would have thrown Jonathan Brooks's uh status with the team uh into you know some Butterfly Effect work there would have happened but there's a lot of just across the board here averageness in terms of what they're going to be able to contribute I feel you know they they got uh sh Smith Wade who's actually a pretty good rookie to bring in you know AJ Parker's got some experience to C so the depth isn't all that bad compared to other positions uh it's just finding consistency in the high level of production even if JC horn is a 17 game starter this year and plays like a top 10 cornerback I don't know that it could raise the ship all that much just because who else is going to step up into that position to DNE Jackson Troy Hill is it a rookie it's going to be interesting to see how they work out that other quarterback group and then what this quarterback group is going to look like when JC horn almost inevitably uh finds himself uh on the injured list now this is the best position group that they have uh in terms in of the pass coverage is for 15th in the league an their safety group and it really builds off of Xavier Woods uh he's again extremely underrated in this aspect uh of his game really like him as a player here uh finding a number two again that that's really the story uh with this team in general it's having one guy at each position and then question marks at who plays opposite of them on the field uh they got some interesting depth here you know Jordan Fuller Jamie Robinson they drafted deanii Richardson they have Nick Scott who was just beyond terrible last year be like Beyond terrible is it possible that he can bounce back yes but right now in terms of pass coverage there's nobody that was worse on this team it was brutal brutal to watch uh you know Jordan Fuller is almost like an early down safety that you're going to see I think he can be a good eighth man in the Box bumping him back into pass coverage I think you can maybe do a little bit better but maybe he can uh with the complement of Xavier Woods be more of a full-time starter as well so I think that's a possibility that people got to uh look out for here now we're going to move on to the run defense with the edge players versus the D-Line vs. RUN run and they're actually tied for 14th here not a bad little starting Group which Javon Clowney I think this is really where Javon Clowney should be playing I think first and second down is really where he can Thrive it's where he's always sort of thrived throughout his career in a consistent basis then you got Amari barno who you wouldn't think would be so much better against the Run than against the pass but that's was the story uh at least last year and coming into this year is that he's actually quite good against the run a really good compliment uh so I expect him to get some early down running work unless somebody can outplay him in that aspect uh and there's not really a whole lot of options for that you know DJ wanam maybe ends up being the option I think they really like the early Down group to be what I had projected for the uh passing Downs Clowney and wanam and then having you know like DJ Johnson come into his own and play more on uh consistently um as part of the rotation and then have like Leota and um and even barno as well get out there quite a bit caleban Chason I don't really know if he makes the team uh I don't know how he made the team at all I think it's this sort of a maybe looking for that Frankie Lu luu replacement Frankie louu replacement sorry I think that that could be their strategy here but but he's just not good I don't think he's just he's not good enough DJ Johnson I think beats him out just because of he was drafted last year in the third round and there maybe it was just a slower development for him uh I can't imagine them taking him in the third round and then just kick him away especially when he was already a development project now here is where they're really great and that is the Run stuffers on the interior tied for fifth in the NFL with one of if not the best Derek Brown gets a 994 grade one of the highest grades for run stuffers in the entire league then you got Nick Thurman who's the next best up who depending on what kind of front they want to run if they're going to run a traditional 43 or 34 I think evro can really mix in both there it'll be interesting to see if they run a more traditional 34 you know Derek Brown's out there Nick Thurman who's the third guy you would anticipate maybe it's a aan Robinson who comes in plays like a nose tackle role uh he might be the best asra but you also got Jaden crdi cretti who is a rookie maybe as the season goes on he gets more reps there uh but I think Brown and Thurman are really your top definitely your top two guys and that's it's finding that third one on those you know second and short third and short situ ations um where you need the extra bodies on their goal line short yard situations I think asan Robinson probably gets that throut most of the early season I think that's really the again it's almost like I keep repeating that aspect like the veteran has a lot of work early in the year but to anticipate the rookie to get more and more more and eventually take over as more of a contributor towards the end of the year they have a lot of position groups where that's a thing and I think that's a net positive longterm just not shortterm it's not conducive for a lot of short-term success um but I think for long-term success it could be a really good strategy but just like that just like LB vs. RUN that they have the last ranked linebacker group versus The Run Josie juel sha Thompson 66 and 64 just not it's just not a good group it's not a good group they're going to have to be particularly schemed uh into their success uh luckily they do have the front four particularly with Derek Brown uh that's the first line of defense against the run which should open up more opportunities for this group but man you look you look at some of the ways Josie juwel and sha Thompson recently they're getting caught C in in in double teams they're getting caught by the the lineman going getting up to the next level not really anticipating things well not shooting the gaps well in the Run game so that's something they're really going to have to work on and for two veterans who you would anticipate are have reached their Peak already I don't anticipate this group improving enough to really get out of this ranking I mean maybe they can be the 30th uh in the league uh and again we'll talk about uh traven Wallace just he's just not ready to play for me he's not ready to play at this next level for me he's got a lot of the same issues uh that we're seeing from the guys that that are starters but he was having those issues at the college level uh so you know you draft you don't draft based upon College production you draft based upon what you project the player can become based upon their certain trade so you know Tren Wallace has particular traits I just don't see him being able to have really good production this early in his career Michael Barrett to me is a giant sleeper you know he's a he's a rookie who you know I think he was a udfa um I I really like him I really like him he grade he grades out better early on than Wal now what's ceiling probably lower than Wallace but I think early in his career Barrett could end up being more of a contributor to this defense than Tron Wallace can now moving on to their DB Run Support DB run support and they're tied for 12 uh in that you know Xavier Woods still still good safety so he's a he is the perfect prototype for which you want a three down safety he's topnotch against the pass and middle of the pack against the run you know him and Jordan Fuller I think are interchangeable in that sense which is why a fuller you know can improve just a little bit in the past coverage I think these two are really your top two starters uh just because when you go into the dep you know Sam Franklin just not good against the run at all so it's kind of a liability to have him out there um even though he does perform better quote unquote than Jordan Fuller would in the passing game uh you know dman Richardson keep an eye on him being like a used as a third safety uh in run support uh as he develops as well that could be come a thing uh Nick Scott just that's a real interesting situation does his past production you know those those little moments throughout his career where he looked like he was going to be really good like when he was in Cincinnati or excuse me when he was in uh with the Rams or is this the guy that we got just last year in Cincinnati I just it's going to be he's that's that's a situation to really watch uh throughout the offseason process workouts and training camp uh is Nick Scott so we run through the positional summaries here again and I think again the issues are a Defensive Positional Grades lack of depth in the front four they're going to be a good group a decent group against the run but man when they get into the passing situations it it could get ugly quick especially because you got a guy like Javon Clowney who his overall production is going to drop as the year goes on so you're going to need somebody in that depth group of 58.3 to show up and that's going to take a lot of hard work from this coaching staff and the training staff uh you know a lot of groups sitting towards the bottom you know you get cornerbacks and in run support as a c uh so that UPS it a little bit you know keeps it probably keeps it more uh consistent with what the other uh for numbers add up to there but once you get into the depth of the quarterback run support you're slowly getting worse and worse so that JC JC or picking up an injury could significantly affect this team in both aspects uh and make things a lot harder on the defense which is another thing that you H at this point you have to anticipate it happening uh because it's been the story of his career so far so that's unfortunate but if you can turn it around he can maybe raise up uh a couple of ranking spots here for the defense so Defensive Totals here's what the total defense looks like they are the last ranked Total Defense with a 70.5 with the last ranked passing defense 69.7 they are 18th in run defense it is the best thing that they do uh as a team 71.7 but that really does at the end of the day tell the story of why this is the last ranked team so Overall Grade we take a look at the overall scores it's a 73.79 grade that's last in the entire NFL coaching gets a 77 which is good for 26 total offense 73. 72 30th in the league and then 70 A5 Total Defense last in the entire NFL the coaching staff just not quite good enough to raise up the lack of talent as it currently stands but also I think it's fair to say this coaching staff's job is to not make this team good this year it's to make sure this team is going to be good three four years down the line with Bryce young Jonathan Brooks Xavier Legette iky uanu Derek Brown DJ Johnson Tron Wallace JC horn all those guys being considered top 15 at their position uh come that time come the end of the Dave Canales contract where he could potentially they be looking for an extension if all works out and we'll be kicked to the curb probably slightly before that if it doesn't seem like he's been able to raise up the 30th ranked offense and 32nd dead last ranked defense and there it is all that painstaking work just to Outro get trolled in the comment section by Panther fans who are still delusional about about their team's abilities but I appreciate you guys all coming back and watching 31 more videos to go and then I do a mock draft there at the end so technically 32 videos more to go uh and I appreciate you guys joining me all summer long for this uh thank you to that franchise guy for inspiring this um you know I want to put my own spin on it I got different opinions uh than he does but overall this is a really fun series to do it's always been a fun series to watch as well and I hope you guys had a good time and I'll see you guys with the next video next time bye
