Fantasy Football Draft Advice | 12 Key Injuries to Know (2024)

Introduction Hello everybody welcome into the fantasy pros football podcast I'm Ryan Wormley joined today by Dr Deo Chona he is at sportsmd analysis on Twitter Sports Med analytics everywhere else uh deac we have done some shows together in the past it's been a little while obviously long off season I wasn't doing the Sunday show last year so I didn't get to talk to you every week I miss chatting with you talking about some uh injuries which I don't miss talking about injuries because that's never fun but I miss getting your insights and Analysis on that so I'm happy to be doing kind of a season preview from an injury perspective here we figured you know last couple of days here before the biggest draft weekend of the Year good time to kind of check in and see what we expect from some of these uh you know injuries that have been major talking points throughout August injuries that could impact other players their fantasy values how are you doing after this summer man I'm doing great I'm just out here in Houston loving uh the way our offense is looking for the Texans so I'm excited it's great to be back on with y'all and uh pumped for a big uh season for all us there are a few franchises of whom it would be more fun to be a fan right now than the the Houston Texans I mean I I as a fan of a team in the AFC with the Ravens I you know don't like seeing another great Young quarterback in the conference I wish we would get some of these guys over to the NFC for once but uh I think CJ strad might have the highest approval rating of any player in the NFL like outside unless you're a fan of like the Colts Jags or Titans like I can't imagine disliking strad he just seems like an awesome guy he's really smart he's really really freaking good at quarterback and you guys got a great roster so uh I think it's going to be a fun season for you in Houston and I think it'll be a fun season in Baltimore too but uh I'm jealous of The Vibes in Houston for sure yeah got gotta L shoud yeah he's he's he's UNH hatable no you cannot hate this drout uh all right well of course when we're talking about deepo we are talking about injuries that is his area of expertise of course so we're going to talk about the 12 most impactful fantasy football injuries the names and I asked deepo to provide the names because I wanted to see who people were asking him about and what names were actually being discussed and to me that's kind of a good way to define what is most impactful are the names that you know you're getting questions about on a regular basis here throughout draft season so this show is going to be exactly what it sounds like 12 most impactful fantasy football injuries quick reminder for everyone all of our 2024 consensus rankings and tiers can be found at fantasypros.com rankings also we are you know just about a week away we are exactly a week away actually from kickoff as of when you and I are recording I want to take a moment to thank everybody in the audience for for tuning in all offseason it's been a blast this offseason it's been a blast this draft season to be you know on this ride with everyone and uh you know deepo and I were just talking before we started recording it's by far the busiest time of year but it's also the most fun right I mean this is what why what this is why we play fantasies for draft season right it's it's just super fun so I just want to thank everybody for listening throughout the draft season and let everybody know that if you have enjoyed our shows this summer the best free way to support the show is by leaving an honest review at fantasypros.com review and also rating the show wherever you listen to your podcast we really appreciate the feedback it helps us not only grow the show but also just make it better for each and every listener we want the show to be the best thing it can be for everybody to enjoy it and feel like they're they're getting a little bit smarter when they listen and hopefully having some fun as well so thank you again everybody for listening just wanted to make that note at the top of the show all right let's dive in we're gonna start with the quarterbacks we're GNA start with Justin Herbert who obviously you know had this foots issue Justin Herbert that came up pretty early in in the preseason there's was already some concern for Herbert as a fantasy quarterback in terms of you know the offense and Greg Roman likes to run a lot and Jim Harbaugh likes to run a lot and they don't have the best receivers and then of course you add this injury on top of it it just becomes all that more concerning How concerned are you for this foot issue with Herbert I would say to start the season really low concern and part of that is that they brought him back not just the week before the games they they've he's been back now already for about a week that suggests pretty low severity now the concern with these planer fascia injuries is that they can kind of flare up on him in season and for a player like Herbert that could really specifically affect his Mobility so you're always looking at the rushing quarterback upside in fantasy uh the one sort of good thing about Justin Herbert specifically is that he's got this Elite arm strength and so even if he can't really push all the way off of his his affected foot like normal we would still expect him to be able to really launch that ball just from his core and upper body strength alone so overall I would tell you low chance that he misses time with this because even if it flares up they can manage that things like injections put him in a boot during the week uh but the mobility risk and his fantasy rushing upside would be the concern if it did flare up How likely is it to flare up is this something that like just given the nature of he's gonna be on his feet a lot and he's playing a violent sport that it's kind of likely to flare up or is it you know maybe more of a coin toss yeah I would say more of a coin toss in the sense that it's I wouldn't say likely that it does flare up probably less than 50% just based on the timeline that he was only out for about two three weeks with the boot to begin with and so that in the way that they manage injuries in the preseason two weeks is pretty much confirming very low severity kind of precautionary type holding them out so I I would say for that reason low chance of it really flaring up on him but in general planner fascia is a body part that does tend too so that's where the concern comes from and by the way for everybody listening while deac has a very extensive uh you know expertise in in injuries uh I have zero expertise in in medical anything so the extent of my knowledge of injuries and dealing with them is the injuries I suffer playing adult slow pitch softball so hopefully I don't ask any dumb questions here but uh that's why we have deepo here to uh to lead us and guide us through these injuries um yeah and and you know from the fantasy perspective like you mentioned what it could do for him limiting his Mobility that's particular particularly important in a Greg Roman offense you know we haven't seen Herbert run a ton in his career but with Greg Roman like that is a key part of the offense so that is something that I was really curious to see how they used him in that way and you know it definitely does hurt his value if he's not being used in that way but that's good to hear that you know we would still expect obviously he's got a cannon one of the strongest arms in football and that he can likely still take advantage of that Deshaun Watson um another quarterback here deshun Watson I believe was this just like General shoulder fatigue is is the way I saw it I mean obviously last season ended early for him with an injury he hasn't been very good in Cleveland since getting there anyway um but you know the injuries have also been kind of prevalent since he became a brown what's he dealing with now yeah so you're you're exactly right they called it arm soreness or shoulder soreness now if you really look into the kind of comments that were made about this first deshun Watson came out saying I'm not expecting to play the preseason and his coach said he will play the last game of the preseason and he practiced the Thursday before the last preseason game and reportedly had no major limitations but then was diagnosed if you will or reported with arm soreness so the whole timeline makes it sound like maybe that was just to give them a a unified out so he didn't have to play the preseason game and didn't have to cause any controversy there the data on his injury so he had a fracture in his shoulder socket and the data on that is actually really promising that he should be at about 100% and that should be happening right about now or by week one so it we don't really know as you kind of alluded to what a healthy deshun Watson really looks like but we do suspect from the data and from his injury history and also from the progression which was fairly normal after this type of surgery that he should be looking like 100% of whatever deshun Watson looks like at this point by week one yeah I mean the way he's looked in Cleveland there are probably some managers of Amari Cooper and David and joku who would prefer to see him not be on the field we'll see how it plays out with like you said healthy Watson which you really don't know what that's going to look like we had the appetizer last week now it's time to Feast college football is back don't yours one more quarterback here deac that's Joe burrow um kind of a weird Joe Burrow scary injury like given that he he talked about at least early in the offseason how he couldn't find other quarterbacks who had dealt with this wrist injury that ended his season last year you know for a long stretch he hasn't been throwing three days in a row at practice what's the concern level with burrow yeah you know the reports are a little bit mixed on this one and and it really suggests that there is some concern on the folks who are watching I think that mostly comes from the fact that as you said he hasn't thrown for a bunch of consecutive days in a row now with Joe bur the data on rist ligament surgery when it's done acutely which is really like right after the injury like was and with the modern implants so they have this new implant that we often use in various types of surgery called an internal brace and it basically allows for earlier motion more aggressive rehab overall that kind of combination suggests to me that he's probably very close to full grip strength full range of motion basically the key factors in how you would throw the ball uh now his not throwing every day is pretty common actually when you're coming back from an injury like this and the reason is you don't want to get an overuse type injury called tentis and have a setback and overall the folks who say that Joe burrow is really injury-prone I think that's a little bit overstated if you look at his actual injury history he tore his ACL and MCL little bit of a like a contact play kind of a fluky play not really any injury Insight that I think you can really gain from there for a pattern he had a calf strain happens relatively commonly see Christian mcaffry Russell Wilson these aren't things that necessarily have popped up before or pop up again in subsequent years and then you look at this wrist ligament injury and it's a very serious injury but as long as he bounces back the way we expect we wouldn't really see a like a concerning pattern or an anatomic weak link that would make me say Joe burrow is clearly injury-prone so if he can stay upright most of that's going to be dependent on the o line but if he can say upright we would think Joe burough has a strong season he's actually my one of my two favorites at as comeback player of the year they have him around like plus 300 right now on uh DraftKings so I I like those odds for where the way the offense is shaping up is there any type of throw that you think he would be limited with like it would be more of a struggle to throw the Deep pass or you know a sharp line drive across the middle or do you think like Assuming he's out there playing it would be kind of business as usual my suspicion is it's going to look like business as usual the concern I think if you're G to really point to like where the theoretical weak point would be is falling on this wrist and that you know it's a little hard to say you would think at this point it's fully healed and about as strong as the other side but we do find with a lot of these injuries that the surrounding muscles get stronger even for about a year post injury or post surgery and he was sort of late in the season I think it was November when he had the final play against the Ravens where he really snapped that ligament so uh you're not quite a year you're close my suspicion is he's going to look fine but again if you're going to look at like the weakest point it's probably falling on that wrist let's move to the running backs let's start with Jamir Gibbs who you know dealt with this hamstring injury a Jahmyr Gibbs few weeks ago how's he progressing and what do you sort of view him as an injury risk for re-aggravating it or or starting the season slowly or anything like that yeah you you hit it on the head with the reinjury risk and that's really the key I expect jir Gibbs to look just fine starting out he was held out of practice two weeks in the preseason that essentially confirms very mild severity the other fact that kind of uh strengthens that is that he didn't wait until the week before the games to come back to practice so when players come back with more than a week left usually means they were held out precaution as a precaution and things are pretty much back to normal the data on his performance suggests he'll be at over 90% by the time we week one Starts Now commonly when you do see players coming off of a hamstring you usually see a little bit more touch distributed between the two running backs especially given that they have David Montgomery there you may expect to see that a little bit increased but again the fact that his injury is he's already back at practice as of Sunday so you don't really think there would be any short-term limitations reinjury risk is the key he's had a pretty significant hamstring in the past and you couple that with having a preseason hamstring that caused him to miss about two weeks the reinjury rate on that somewhere around 20% so that's for the first half of the season and usually reag gravs tend to be a little bit more severe than the first one so even if the first one was mild you could be looking at like a moderate severity hamstring not the most likely outcome most likely outcome is he's just fine but he's probably a little higher risk than some of the guys going in that range in the late first early second is the risk enough that you would be more inclined to go after somebody like David Montgomery thinking that there could be more workload for him or would it not really impact how you look at other people in this offense no I think that's exactly how it would impact me I I would be more inclined to invest a little bit more in David Montgomery I'm not pushing him up much past his ADP but if he starts to fall yeah I'm I'm scooping him up so uh that's how I kind of think about him his contingent upside is just so high if jir Gibbs were to miss time talking about upside being very high Christian mcaffrey uh it's always very scary when Christian McCaffrey the guy who's the consensus 101 in just about every format of fantasy draft is dealing with an injury for you are you still willing to take him 101 if you have that pick because he's just so clearly the guy and you're not that worried about the injury or is the calf injury enough that um you would get scared off and maybe bump down your rankings yeah so the 101 is is a pretty interesting spot right because you have Christian mcaffrey and then not far behind Bree Hall not far behind that beon so if you look at those three options I would Trend towards taking probably Bree maybe beon at the 101 just based off of knowing that Christian mcaffry already has a preseason injury there's a slightly higher risk of reinjury for the first four weeks but he's still not yet at the running back age Cliff he's only uh 28 right now so he's not really at the point where you would say this is the beginning of the end for Christian mcaffry based on what seems to be a relatively minor injury and I do get the impression from their comments that they are holding him out purely as a precaution it does sound very much like he's going to be back fully practicing the week before the game so I I don't think it's unreasonable to take him at 101 for me I think I'd probably lean Bree if if I'm going running back there do you think because one of the one of the reasons that mcaffry is so valuable in Fantasy is that the ners like use him even in blowouts like they want to get they wanted him to get that streak continued last year right where he was scoring a touchdown every single week so even at blowouts they would have him on the field do you think that an injury like this is concerning enough that the team might pull them back and if the 49ers are up a lot be more inclined to look to a backup I would think so and and you'd have to think like that's why they invested in gendo for example uh I I would if I were looking at their history they've come really very close to the Super Bowl pretty much every year and they seem to always be one of the most injury riddled teams they're heavy on the Run game they're very physical so maybe that has something to do with it but uh if I'm looking at their roster I'm thinking about management for the long game here not trying to get some stat record or you know win some week 10 game by 20 points anybody who knows me knows there's basically nothing in the world I love more than going to baseball games all summer long in fact I've already made plans for this weekend to attend all three Orioles games out here in Denver been talking about it all month it is finally just a couple of days away I'm really excited to see my team take on the woful Rockies and hopefully uh earn a sweep that would be amazing to make sure I got the best seats for those games at the best price I turned to game time with killer last last minute tickets lowest price Nick Chubb guaranteed all right let's continue with the running backs Nick chub obviously don't need to remind everybody of the injury that we saw in week two of last season so it's been almost a year but it was a gruesome devastating injury um really really tough to watch uh you know let alone just like the fact that he's an awesome player and a really fun running back to watch play football um just a really catastrophic injury you know watching it as an observer uh like I said it has been almost a year at this point we saw him like doing squats you know in the weit room we saw those videos kind of circling um are you interested in Nick chub this far removed from the injury or would you maybe be looking at Jerome Ford and just kind of avoiding chub and drafts yeah most of the offseason I've been going pretty heavy on Jerome forward Nick chub was going in like rb3 territory which I felt was way too high he if you look at the reports yes he squats a lot but so do most NFL running backs and if that's a big difference between squatting which is a super controlled Motion versus cutting changing direction that's really where the knee is really tested for its stability and then the other aspect of this is is that he hasn't really added in contact as well so there's kind of still two hurdles in my that he has yet to complete or at least per reports they seem to say that he hasn't really hit those yet now the other part of this is that he's on the pup he was kind of trending towards that for a few weeks now but even being on the pup I don't necessarily think he's a lock to come back week five after he's eligible my guess is he probably stays on there a couple more weeks because as we kind of just discussed like he's not really making yet the ABC checklist that you have to do to to make it back as a running back and another injury on this knee would probably be a career Ender so I don't think they're going to rush him back in any way uh the other thing you think about is that when running backs come off of big injuries and especially star running backs they tended average about four games to ramp up their touches to their kind of Baseline level and it really wouldn't be surprising with Nick chub if you don't see his Baseline level most of the season if at all because Jerome Ford's a pretty good player and with Nick chub like I said the real questions about longevity having now had two multi- ligament knee surgeries on a single knee pretty much unheard of unprecedented for a player of his caliber to return to that level so you have to wonder really a lot of question marks with Nick chub when he does play the data favors probably about a 20 to 25% efficiency hit and so all of that taken kind of as a whole makes me think Nick chub is probably a little bit too pricey for me right now Jerome Ford good value I love Ford this year and in every dra uh Debo one of our colleagues made a good point that drone Ford works for any type of build you have whether zero RB robust RB like wherever you are when it comes time that Ford is you know typically going off the board he's a great pick so I love Jerome Ford a lot this year um speaking of guys on pup Jonathan Brooks list Jonathan Brooks he tore his ACL last November so that's what you know nine months ago if my math is right as we to the season um he is going to start the season on the physically unable to perform list what do you expect from him in terms of when he's back on the field and what he'll look like when he is and and is there any point this season where he gets back to kind of what we expect or is it you're really looking at 2025 yeah Jonathan Brooks is an interesting case for me I'm betting on him big and the reason is you're you're getting him probably around round nine and he has truly the potential to be his ceiling is essentially a League winner and if you look at him at athletically and in sort of looking at previous players who have had a similar injury history and pattern uh and timeline he looks very similar in that regard to Breece Hall from last year and if you remember with Breece Hall didn't play much early had a little little bits of explosion and then the last five games of the year averaged 130 yards per game and about one touchdown per game so with Jonathan Brooks you're starting on the pup list not a huge surprise you will look for again about a four game ramp up similar like like similarly to as we talked about with Nick chub but then once he's there that week eight week nine time Point hit projects to hit about 90% of his efficiency with his touches so at that point I think Jonathan Brooks is really promising and as the season goes on particularly towards the fantasy playoffs you're looking at a potential rb1 wow that's we see it with rookies from time to time typically you think about it on the receiver side of like kind of that December League winner um if Brooks gets that opportunity and is looking back and healthy again like I do like the talent quite a bit so um if you can get him in kind of that round round nine range and hold I I tend to not like to draft guys who are already injured because I just feel like injuries will find you and you don't want to start behind the eightball but when you throw out terms like League winner and and somebody that you as like a medical expert are investing in heavily that that speaks very highly to me of of what we think he can be in the second half of the season um let's get to some of the wide receivers pukan nakua uh hurt his knee early in August um the reports seem Puka Nacua to be that he's like on track to to be back for the opener would you expect him to be somewhat limited or less effective than we saw last year or do you think it's kind of all systems go for puka yeah it seems to me like it's going to be all systems go I I would say with puka they're calling it a Bersa injury and the Bersa is basically like a fluid sack on the front of the knee uh when it gets hit the wrong way it can swell up but that swelling isn't structurally like a ligament tear or a major injury to cartilage or meniscus it's not structurally unstable in any way so it's annoying it's sometimes painful but it usually is played through and uh with puka the other part of this that's kind of reassuring is that Shawn McVey came out saying this is a Bersa it's not something serious he's going to be fine for week one and sea mcvey's coach speak index on the injury accuracy is 90% which is super high so all of that together to me is very reassuring again there we see a lot of reports in the this time of year saying that an injury is not that serious so it's a little hard to take that you know totally for their word but again with sha mcf's history it does suggest that uh he's he's on his puka is on track to play quick note for everybody on autopilot let autopilot manage your fantasy football lineup automatically so you never have to worry about last minute changes if the injury bug hasn't hit your fantasy team already it certainly could later auto swap inactive players and ensure your lineup is always optimized even pros premium subscribers at fantasypros.com myplaybook or on the fantasy football myplaybook app all right four players left here at deac Christian Watson there Christian Watson was uh an interesting story about his was it that his legs weighed different weights um I think that's what it was and you know he's had kind of a history of hamstring injuries is that what it was is that they weighed differently yeah basically that they had a different muscle mass to them and when you have a different muscle mass you have a different strength with that the interesting part of that is is that they said last year he was as different as 20% side to side on his hamstring strength so you imagine like when you run you're pulling off of one side or pushing off of one side and you have to catch it with the other side and if you're running kind of lopsided that in itself is actually a proven major risk factor for ASM for uh reinjury and so when I have like my patients for example I test their strength and when they're less than 90% strength side to side after surgery or after injury I tell them you're at a high risk for reinjury so he's now hit that 10% threshold he's reportedly at an 8% difference now and if that's truly accurate there's a lot of reason for optimism that maybe he really has settled this hamstring issue and gotten to the root cause of it uh the the aspect of him that it's hard to really judge is where he fits in with this deep wide receiver core but from a health standpoint I think definitely potential value there depending on how far he slips in your draft Yeah Watson has I mean I really like all the Packers receivers that cost maybe not Jaden Reed although I see the case for him the rest of them like pretty happy to take where they're going um Watson has been my favorite though uh just because it's so easy to paint the picture of hey like the reason that this was this regular issue for him has been resolved and if it is you know very clear case that he could be the wide receiver one in this offense and a screaming value in drafts so um that's really encouraging to hear that if he has gotten down to this threshold that it's being reported he has that could be really beneficial and make him like I said a real smash value um we got a Josh Downs couple uh W wide receivers here left Josh DS had that high ankle sprain again early on in the preseason as of the time we're recording I don't think there's been an update on if he was going to play in week one or anything like that I might be incorrect if I've missed anything feel free to correct me but um you know something like that I remember from what I had read at the time and again feel free to correct me something like four to six weeks on on something like that so are we thinking that he'll probably be ready week one or if not you know is there a certain point that we might see him back to full Effectiveness yeah everything you said totally spot on there hasn't been an official report there's reports of I think from beat writers of some optimism but with that being said they he's now off the boot he's off the scooter he's walking normally big difference between walking normally in a straight line and cutting and pivoting off a high ankle so I I would tell you the data says he week one's possible which would be the four-week but the more likely is week two or three and with Josh Downs the other part you think about is the earlier you come back from a high ankle the higher your reinjury rate is and with him being a pretty important part of their overall season I would have a hard time imagining that they're going to rush him back thinking that they might you know get an extra week or two typically you see a 15 to% dip initially in the wide receiver uh targets so you know if he's going to rush back you you want him to be close to 100% I would think and furthermore would you really do it at a high risk of reinjury it's up to about 20% in the first four to six weeks back so with Josh TOS I think he has a a strong case for a strong second half of the season first half the season a lot of risk involved next receiver here Hollywood Brown now with the Chiefs um he Hollywood Brown obviously left that I think it was week one of the preseason game um with the the phrasing I saw was what it was like the Sterno clavicular joint dislocation is what I might have watched that um what can you tell us about kind of where he at now you you nailed it man it's uh so the the SC joint the C kler is basically right in the front of the chest and it's not that commonly injured we have a couple cases Danny amandola a few years back and Tyreek Hill more recently who had similar treatment they both missed four weeks returned on the fifth week so if Hollywood Brown follows that week one would be the fourth week week two is probably the more likely outcome of when he comes back now the reinjury rate on this is thought to be relatively low it's not a hugely data driven conclusion but just the fact that it's a relatively uncommon injury to begin with makes me think that he's not that likely to have it happen again uh the other part of it is that Tyreek especially showed us that players do come back at a pretty good Pace meaning that they they don't have much of a performance hit Associated Tyreek and Dam Danny amandola before him both didn't really have a dip uh two a sample size of two is admittedly very small but even biomechanically I wouldn't really expect this to severely limit Hollywood I would say this is probably a bet worth a player worth betting on if you're looking at a redraft league where he's probably going to be pretty close to full strength by a latest week three I remember when it happened I mean he spent the night in the hospital so it kind of sounds extra scary when you when you hear that phrasing um but you're you're thinking that it's not long-term much to worry about yeah EX exactly and and it's very common we we usually send patients to the hospital the reason is cuz it's right in the middle of the chest so there's a bunch of important organs right behind there so you just got to make sure all of those are fine and he was discharged I think the next day so uh the the hospital is very you're right it's totally scary from the headline perspective but that you can probably take advantage of that uh sort of fear and pick up a little extra value on Hollywood what's the latest on T.J TJ Hockenson hackinson he's the last guy we'll talk about here obviously he had his injury towards the end of last season is there anything that you have on him in terms of excuse me I'm going to restart that okay oh something wrong pipe one second all right let me make a note of that I'll have edit that out good call yeah gez all right three two last guy let's squeeze in a tight end here T.J hackinson what's the latest on him obviously his injury came you know at the end of last season um um and he has certainly fallen in drafts because of you know the nature of the injury and what his recovery timeline looks like is he a bet worth making in drafts yeah I think it totally depends on how you're planning to use him and and with that I mean the average on these is going to be about 10 months now that puts him somewhere around the November timeline the younger players he was 26 at the time of injury highly athletic for his position about 80th percentile based on his combine metrics do tend to have the at least ability to move that up a little bit but you're looking at still a mid October early November return probably for TJ hackinson now he's on the pup so we know Le at least he's going to miss four games and then when he comes back he projects to be about 85% there efficiency wise so the other part of it is that there's this increased injury risk in the first six weeks back for tight ends coming off of ACL and sometimes uh you would think it's pretty similar for the ACL MCL combo but specifically for the ACL population there's a 15% injury risk in those first six week six weeks back now with TJ Hawkinson if you're talking about how is he going to look in the last maybe four to six games of the season I think that is very promising because that projects to be pretty much not limited and around the 90% efficiency level for him and he was a top two or three tight end when he was healthy so I I would say that has a potential to be meaningful in your fantasy playoffs but uh I think if you're taking him you have to take somebody else with him he is Dr deac Chona deac great to be podcasting with you again really excited to have you back for another year with us at fantasy pros uh you know I already mentioned where you can find him on Twitter and everything but he'll be appearing on the show Sunday night Recaps uh we'll be tweeting out some of his threads on injuries throughout the year so yeah just excited to be working with you again man and uh let's have a good season for both the Texans and the Ravens huh yes sir maybe a little better for the Texans but I'm down all right for de I'm Ryan warmley thank you everybody for tuning in and we'll see you next time see you guys
