Full Team Barrage, Bobby Miller, & the Bullpen Lead Los Angeles Dodgers to Series Win Over Orioles

well the Dodgers won yet another series almost the whole offense got involved Bobby Miller was pretty darn good and we got some injury news we'll talk about so much to talk about so let's get live on locked on [Music] Dodgers you are locked on Dodgers your daily Los Angeles Dodgers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every [Music] day hey Dodger fans this is lockon Dodgers part and use code all lowercase locked on MLB for a first deposit match up to $100 and with that said let's get started here the Dodgers beat the Orioles what was the final score six to3 uh to win the series they lost the first game of the series if really you can make a case when you look at this this home stand ended seven- two and uh the two games of Dodgers lost there was the game against the Rays when they had a lead in the ninth inning Evan Phillips gave up the game time Homer in the ninth inning and then Joe Kelly gave up two run Homer in the 10th inning uh you could make a pretty good case Dodgers should have won that game and then this the one game they lost to the Orioles they lost three to2 and really it was just little tiny things so you Dodgers were very very close to going nine and0 on this home stand which would have been awesome but seven and two is pretty awesome too especially on a day that all four other teams in the National League West all lost and obviously the two that matter right now are the Dbacks and the Padre's because they are the two teams that are relatively close to the Dodgers and the standings uh now the Dodgers are up by four games on the Dbacks and five games on the Padres which is a great place to be in as we're what heading into August 30th we've got about a month of games left and I've said it many times you would rather have rather be the team with the the three or four game lead than the team chasing that team and uh yeah it's it's a great situation for the Dodgers to be in uh they just keep doing their thing and that's all they can really do uh it it's been fun so this game let's let's talk specifically about this game I'm going to talk about Bobby Miller in the second segment uh a lot to talk about with Miller the story of this game was the offense like the Dodgers won six to3 they dominated more than that uh Joe Joe Davis said late in the game he's like it feels like the Dodgers should be leading this game by a lot more than they are and and really that's true because the Orioles got one big swing from Colton cowser a three-run home run which is kind of funny because former or Orioles manager Earl Weaver was kind of the the big proponent of the three-run home run as an offensive strategy um and that's how they got their runs here luckily the Dodgers didn't have any home runs but they got six runs because they had 14 hits plus four walks uh just ton of base runners they did leave a lot of guys on base but that's why I don't really care so much about raw numbers of leaving guys on base because uh if you get the runs that and when you have rallies like this you're almost always going to leave guys on base because you know you get a big hit with Runners and scoring position well now you got another guy on base eventually you're going to get out and you're going to leave guys on base and so getting the six runs in I'll take six runs and whether that's with zero left on base or 10 left on base doesn't really matter to me six runs there there was a few key moments here Austin Barnes hit a four- foot double a chopper literally went four feet and then bounced over the drawn in infield and he hustled all the way and it was a hustle double that went four feet on the Fly negative 36 degree launch angle wasn't hit hard it was 81 miles an hour off the bat just you know it was luck and that's that's how baseball works sometime you know you put the bat on the ball and good things happen uh later in the in the game in the bottom of the eighth inning Tommy Edmond put the bat on the ball came up with basota one out and got a pitch to hit and hit a a sacrificed fly it was you know they they got that situational hitting mukie Betts had an RBI single uh a lot of guys contributed here when you look sh Otani was the only guy on the team without a hit uh he was 0 for five everybody else the Dodgers only struck out six times but Muki two for four Kik one for three with two walks oh no that that's T Oscar sorry wrong Hernandez T Oscar one for three with two walks Edmund two for four with the sack fly uh Roos two for five Kik one for four Taylor two for three with a walk uh I'm gonna talk about Taylor in a second Gavin Lux two for four and Austin Bens two for four uh bartens had two runs two rbi's a Barnes was kind of the the offensive player of the game if you can give it to a guy who had a four- foot double um but you know with what the Dodgers have been getting from the catching position lately it it was it was big and uh it was kind of funny because I tweeted before the game about how all four other teams of the National League West had lost the game their games and so the Dodgers could gain a game on everybody and several people replied with some snarky thing about have you seen this lineup That ain't going to happen and uh I I think we've already forgotten how bad some of the lineup UPS earlier this year actually were this lineup the the guys I just read yeah there's guys who have had struggles at times this year K and Chris Taylor have both been really bad at times this year Austin Barnes has been bad at times this year but there's no Cavin beio in this lineup there's no some of these guys who were actually offensive black holes there's none of that there's definitely no uh Billy McKinna or things we've seen in previous years sorry I I should have said two names so that Billy McKinna doesn't feel singled out when he listens to this but sorry about that Billy um my grandma was a mcken I might be related to Billy mcken but uh I'm glad he's not on the Dodgers because the Dodgers have a team full of guys who can hit and uh you know having Max mzy on the bench because you know give him a day off Lefty on the mound all that stuff uh Freddy Freeman on the bench I'm gonna talk more about Freddy in the third segment uh yeah it wasn't the best lineup the Dodgers have ever had but it got the job done and and that was great to see it was really it it was a team effort an offensive barrage it's nice once in a while to see the Dodgers score a bunch of runs without hitting any home runs uh I I like home runs a lot I'm a big fan of the three-run Homer just like Earl Weaver was but I'm also a fan of a a rally that doesn't have a homer I'm a fan of two-run doubles I'm a fan of sack flies even in you know especially when you're up by two runs and go into the ninth inning uh yeah safly is great there would I have rather had a grand slam from Tommy Edmond absolutely would have rather have a three-run double but you know what a sack fly that was good that was really good and it's nice to see that sort of thing um yeah all in all oh I I said I was gonna talk a little bit more about Chris Taylor uh Taylor's at bat in the in that eighth inning to help build that rally that eventually ended up in a sack fly that was a great atat can I call it about he walked great plate appearance um he I I don't know if you guys have noticed Chris Taylor isn't swinging and missing nearly as much as he did earlier this SE well I don't think anybody in baseball history has swung and missed as much as Chris Taylor did earlier this season but Taylor lately since coming off the injured list like he's actually putting like the results haven't necessarily been there so much but watching him swing that it's like he looks like he's putting up a good at B he's he's fouling off tough pitches and in this plate appearance when he walked he fouled off a couple good pitchers pitches and then he took a really good pitch for ball four that was not too far off the plate and absolutely April May June version of Chris Taylor would have chased that pitch that was huge and it's little things that you know obviously he plays good defense he played third base tonight played played good D can play all over the field he seems to be a lot of games T Oscar Hernandez's defensive replacement left field which is good because ta needs a defensive replacement late in left field late in the games and it was really good to see him Taylor putting the bat on the ball uh I think the results will come if he keeps doing that he's not going to get back to 2017 version of Chris Taylor he's not going to be a superstar but that's not what the Dodger need him for with his positional flexibility if he can be a guy who can give you a good at bat who can come up there and hit the ball hard somewhere you know and he's gonna get some hits uh that that's I think that's why he's still around in the battle for a postseason spot we'll see if he earns the postseason spot but he's in the battle because of play appearances like that that's that's what uh what Taylor is right now and that's good uh obviously we'd all love to have 2017 version of Chris Taylor back but this is so much better than early 2024 version that we will absolutely take it I'm gonna come back in a minute I'm gonna talk about Bobby Miller who uh there's a lot to talk about with his game so we'll dig into the the pros and cons the ups and downs all that so thank you for making lockdown Dodgers your first listen every weekday morning and please keep it locked on Dodgers this episode is brought to tell the internet's not great here at my parents house hopefully that little clip played but I am back my name is Jeff Snider thank you for being with me thanks for making lockdown Dodges your first listen every weekday morning thanks for being here live with me on Thursday evening uh it's been an interesting week for this podcast just with me traveling Vince has held it down a lot if you watched yesterday I did the episode from my car driving home from Dodger or drive to my parents house from Dodger Stadium which was a first for us today is another first I am doing this I don't know if I've ever worn a red shirt on this podcast podcast before and I have very rarely gone hatless but uh my hat is in my car and I'm not in my car uh so here I am with my hair exposed and a red shirt which is weird I don't own many red shirts uh but thanks for being with us you can go beond the podcast and become a locked on Dodgers Insider by going to join sub tex.com lockon Dodgers uh just a few bucks a month with three 14-day trial check out locked on sports today and locked on Sports Los Angeles on YouTube locked on Sports LA is where you can find the locked on Dodgers postcast hosted by Pete Fox after almost every Dodger game uh you can hear Pete refer to Evan Phillips as Evan Williams accidentally over and over again I was telling Pete it reminds me of uh the funny thing I I read about two ladies at a candle store and one of them sniffs a candle and says oh this smells like Fireball and her friend says uh us non-alcoholics call that cinnamon that's what I think of every time not accusing Pete of being an alcoholic of course uh just it's funny to me when Pete immediately goes to the name of the bourbon uh to talk about our our sometimes closer tonight closer Evan Phillips uh but you can catch that on lockon Sports Los Angeles also catch every pitch of every Dodger game on sirusxm or the sxm app and for your second listen today check out lockon MLB hosted by Paul Francis Sullivan AKA Sully he does a really good job covering all of Major League Baseball excuse me and uh yeah so check that out getting back into this game Bobby Miller started for the Dodgers it was uh it was mostly good he he pitched five innings there was a point where it looked like he might get through six Innings then there was a point in the fifth inning where it looked like he might not get through five innings uh he gave up that three- run Homer in the fifth inning actually there was a point in what the second or third inning where it looked like he might not get through that inning because he pulled up a little bit lame covering first on a ground ball and then he you know it seemed to bother him later I'm I'm interested to see when I started recording it hadn't yet seen anything about Miller's leg uh on from the postgame talk so don't know if anybody addressed that uh just scrolling really quick to see uh there is a video from Sports in La uh that I I don't have time to watch the little video right now because I'm doing a podcast but haven't seen any mention of what was up with his legs so we'll have to keep an eye on that but he pitched really well he went five innings just allowed two hits the big issue was three walks and he only had three strikeouts his last start against the raid you remember he struck out what nine or 10 guys uh and and we talked then about how okay this is the Rays and the rays are not a good hitting team this year and so we'll have to see what they what he does against a good hitting team the Orioles are a good hitting team and yeah for the most part he did a good job the the walks were a concern and even more than the walks it's a related issue of just being in hitter's counts a lot uh it it caused the pitch count to go up he threw what did he throw 86 pitches in five innings so that's 16 17.2 pitches per inning which is it's too many if you want to get deep in a game um and just being in the second inning it felt like he was in a Full Count every batter and the home run to cower the problem was he got into a three and one count maybe it was even three and0 but uh yeah and and so he kind of put himself in a situation two Runners on and get into a really good hitters count where you kind of have to throw a hitable pitch and it wasn't a bad pitch but it was bad enough that Colton cowser hit a home run on it and and so you don't have to throw those pitches as much when you do throw strike one I heard Oral say later in the game that Bobby Miller was less than 50% for first pitch strikes I haven't checked those numbers but that sounds right from from what I remember watching uh he he didn't Pound The Zone and that's what I would hope to see from him what we did see was the stuff looked pretty good the curveball was really good the change up uh first inning it took him a couple of them to to kind of zero in on it but then he threw some really good change UPS the fast ball had some life it wasn't amazing but it was 98 miles an hour and and all in all like and oral mentioned this early in game he said okay you got fast ball you got change up you got curveball stick with that and and it's kind of like what Vince and I talked about yesterday uh from my car with Walker bu that rather than trying to have a huge Arsenal the whole kitchen sink Arsenal uh ber and now Miller seem to be focusing more on okay let's let's execute these three pitches and you know you have the other ones in your pocket for if you need them but for the most part you're just trying to execute a few pitches and and not stress about having eight options like your you Darvish or or somebody like that and so when you uh when you look at that from that point it was a good start for Bobby Miller like I I wasn't as excited about even though it was just the one home run like he he's a couple pitches away from throwing five scoreless innings and that would be awesome but he he didn't feel dominant in this one like he did against the race and obviously the Orioles are a better- hitting team than the race some of it is simply that I also wonder if you know when you've got uh ghost bear says that uh Bobby Miller said he tweaked his knee a little bit on that play and uh you know maybe that affects it too you obviously lower body is huge it didn't affect his velocity didn't seem to affect his movement but it may have affected the command a little bit so uh there's no real conclusions to draw from this Bobby Miller start other than yeah he's he's gonna make another start because they kind of need him to for reasons I'm going to talk about more in the next segment um and I'm not dreading that the way I might have been otherwise um that looks like I think after the do the Dodgers play the Angels after the dback series I think that's what I remember if that's the case yeah two game series against the Angels which would mean that is it'll probably be Walker ber and Bobby Miller pitching those two games against the Angels well the Angels aren't a good team so that's good news for those two guys let them continue to settle in and feel good about their stuff uh and you know the Dodgers have their best three guys available right now going against the Dbacks plus probably Justin roesy on Sunday we're going to dig into all of that the injury news the the roster moves coming up all that stuff in the next segment so uh that's mostly what I've got to say about tonight's game we talked offense we talked Bobby Miller uh so I'm GNA come back in a minute talk about all these injuries and news on all that so thank you again for making lockdown Dodgers your first listen every weekday morning and please continue to keep it locked on Dodgers this episode is brought to you by prize pick priz pick talking Dodgers with you guys this week uh I did the show Sunday night with Vince but then Monday I was driving to California uh from my home in Utah and then Tuesday I was at the game and then last night I did it from my car which was fun but I didn't get to you know read the comments in the chat and all that stuff all the things I enjoy about doing this podcast it was fun talking Dodgers from my car uh fun little experiment uh if it wasn't so dark you could have seen my face but let's face it my face isn't the reason that you guys are here for this podcast but I am happy to be here talking DOD with you for this last episode of the week uh as we get ready to head into the Diamondback series I guess I'll just remind you join the uh become a locked on Dodgers Insider by going to join sub text.com loock on Dodgers check out lockon Sports St in lockdown Sports Los Angeles catch every pitch of every Dodger game on serus XM or the sxm out by searching for Dodgers and yeah make locked on MLB your second listen today and with that said uh Dodgers do head to Arizona now uh Pete was talking on the postcast about how he didn't love how Joe Davis and oral Herer worded it they said that with the Dodgers winning tonight they're up by four games on the dback so the Dodgers could get swept in Arizona and still leave their tied for first place um you know it's just math there's no such thing as a broadcaster Jinx none of that and in fact if there was such thing as broadcaster jinx it would probably work the other way and so now there's no way the Dbacks can sweep the Dodgers now that the broadcaster said it oh but then I just said they can't do I count as a bro I'm a podcaster is a podcaster jinx the thing I don't know luckily the baseball teams on the field will make those decisions and I like where the Dodgers are at going into this series the nice thing is I'm not going to say they can go in there and get swept I'm saying you go there and split and Vince and I have talked about this a couple times you go in and split these four games it's like a win because you just took four games off the schedule and didn't lose any ground uh win three out of four even better leave their leave Arizona up by six games um yeah it's going to be an exciting weekend the Dbacks obviously this is their the biggest series of the season for them because they are chasing the Dodgers it's their last time they get to play the Dodgers this year and so the Dbacks it is a must-win series for the Dbacks and for the Dodgers it's another series and yeah it's it's a we want to win because winning is fun and we're a good baseball team so it'll be a fun series to watch um Freddy Freeman should be back in the lineup Freddy Freeman ended up taking all three games of this Orioles series off uh which again adds to this Orioles team they are one of the best teams in baseball and the Dodgers won a series Without Freddy Freeman and with without Tyler glassor Shob Yamamoto like that when you look at what the Dodgers have right now and what they could have in October we'll see but uh pretty impressive Freddy Freeman should be back in the lineup it's just his finger we know he's been struggling since he fractured the finger and they decide to give him three three days off plus the day off on Monday so he's hasn't played a game since Sunday so hopefully that's a reset that he needs uh to play through the pain because it's probably going to be another couple weeks before the finger totally healed I think if uh if there was a good option in the minor leagues I think Freddy probably would be on the injured list right now um but there's not really a good option in the minor leagues uh to come up and play in Freddy's place they don't have they don't have a first baseman on the 40-man roster and so if they were to want to call up somebody like Andre lipsius uh they would have to add him to the 40-man roster which means cutting somebody else and and you know adding to that roster crunch so you know they're they're just getting by playing with a short bench and and that's uh you know it it's worked out so far hopefully Freddy can snap out and and play well uh but that's the update on him he should be back in the lineup for this dback series we also got an update on Tyler glasnow that wasn't a thrilling update Tyler glasnow is going to play catch tomorrow Friday uh and they'll see how it goes um if it goes well if he comes out of it well then he will start his throwing progression and start getting back um but he they said that he threw a week or so ago and didn't come out of it super well and and so that's why they kind of slowed things down again and Dave Roberts was asked plainly do are are you confident that he's going to pitch again this year and Dave Robert said we're hopeful and you know a lot of people jumped on that quote and I understand why because we hope he's going to pitch this year isn't a super confident way of putting it listening actually listening to Dave Roberts when he said it he was kind of uh he was differentiating between confident or uh was it confident or even like sure um anyway he was saying yeah I I can't say with for sure that he's going to pitch this year but we're hopeful yeah we we hope so um and hope is a good thing uh if if they didn't think that GL now was going to pitch again this year they wouldn't be hopeful because you can't be hopeful about something you know it's not going to happen so them being hopeful that he's going to pitch again this year is overall not terrible news obviously we wish he was feeling great and we wish the update was hey he's gonna throw a Sim game and then he'll be back in the rotation next week um that's not the update we got and so it's a and people talking about football in this chat come on people it's baseball season um but uh yeah so that's the update on Tyler glass now uh bruar grat all is is throwing a Sim Sim game this weekend and then we'll see what comes next after that he has healed much more quickly than we would have expected when we saw him walk off the field a few weeks ago with that hamstring injury that's good news Yamamoto uh he made his Rehab start on uh last night Wednesday night with three Innings he's uh or two innings he went two innings he's going three innings in his next start and then a fourth inning in the bullpen after uh just as far as working him up I know when I saw when I watched Clayton Kershaw pitch a rehab start in ranch kukamonga in 2016 did the same thing he pitched three or four Innings and then went to the bullpen and threw another inning uh don't have to get all your pitches in the game situation it's all about getting built up and so Yamamoto should be back in a couple weeks glas now will hopefully be back in a couple weeks and that would hopefully give them both time to be built up at least to five innings obviously in a perfect Ru you'd have your starters have no limits in the postseason uh but at least for the first round they may be f guys but also in the first round of the playoffs it's it's a best of Five series assuming the Dodgers get the buy um and and so they're playing in the nlds in the first round of the playoffs it's a best of five and you know you've got so you you can get by with you could maybe even get by with three starters uh if you wanted to which means more relievers off days all that stuff and so and then maybe they're built up by the NLCS to not have any limits yeah it's not ideal it's not perfect but uh if Yamamoto and glasow both come back healthy it's better news than the alternative and that's kind of where we're at right now um other I'm trying to think if there's other injury news the only other real news I can think of is Dalton rushing is tearing it up in triple he also played catcher for Oklahoma City on Thursday night um which is his first time in triple A playing catcher not sure they've had him playing Left Field and we you know they started that before the trade deadline now maybe they're not thinking Outfield as a possibility but you know having a Dalton rushing can hit he is tearing the cover off the ball in Triple A and he is probably a guy who could come up and hit in the big leagues and maybe they're thinking about that as a possibility obviously you got Will Smith who we know is better than what he's playing right now and you have Austin Barnes who obviously a well respected veteran and as he showed tonight he can still put up a good game for you sometimes um so but having all those options and having catcher as an option for Dalton rushing uh I would have been more concerned if they had had him play first base in Oklahoma City than I would be worried about Freddy Freeman um but you know Dalton rushing doesn't play first base and they're not don't seem to be interested in turning him into a first baseman um that is yeah that that's kind of the updates now and so what we have resetting everything Dodger up on the Dbacks by four games and the Padre's by five games heading into the four game series in Arizona um the the Padres I remember I looked and I can't remember who they play now they just finished this series with oh they play the Rays now um so you know hopefully the Rays can can help the Dodgers out a little bit and the Dodgers can help themselves out a little bit against the Dbacks and put some distance between them and these other teams and have a little bit more relaxing month of September all in all though really good series here against the Orioles against a really good Orioles team the Dodgers won the series and uh they they beat they they won a game last night with Corbin burs against Walker beer uh that tells me everything I need to know about uh this team right now where they're at Los Dodgers we world World Series champs ask do I think the Dodgers will take the series against Arizona it's hard to win a four game series uh winning three games out of four is hard uh I I expect the Dodgers to at least split the series um and yeah it wouldn't shock me at all if they win the series I I do think the Dodgers are a better team than the Dbacks the Dbacks have been playing well lately I think the Dodgers are just a better team uh their pitching lines up the Dbacks pitching lines up too they have Zack gallon and then Merl Kelly and then Brandon fought and then Eduardo Rodriguez but we've seen the Dodgers do well against all of those pitchers in the past and so it's it's gonna come down to the Dodgers playing as well as they can because I do think the Dodgers are the better team so yeah I I guess at least a split and maybe a series win for the Dodgers that's going to do it for me for tonight that'll do it for us for this week uh I am driving home to Utah from California I'm in my parents dining room right now if you can't tell um I am driving home to Utah on Friday and so I will be watching this dback series from my home and uh Vince and I'll be back on Sunday evening to talk about this series about the first three games of the series anyway hopefully the Dodgers will have already won the series by then after winning the
