Postgame | John Harbaugh RIPS Chiefs hold off Ravens 27-20 when review overturns a tying TD

good hardfought football game uh very exciting football game a lot of a lot of lot of back and forth uh I'm proud of the way our guys played you know I think the way we fought the way we competed uh the the challenges that we face just by the situation of the game and all the things going on around the game and obviously the challenge that uh our opponent presents us which is a great opponent and uh and then the the adversity throughout the of the game is a challenge I thought our guys uh you know met met all those things all those setbacks at times and uh and uh and fought like crazy to overcome it you know and looked like we had an opportunity there to to tie the game up or try to win it with a two-point conversion so uh didn't happen at the end but uh proud of the way the guys fought we're only going to get better from here on out and I'm looking forward to that I'm really looking forward to getting back to work next week and getting ready for the Raiders John just starting with obiously Isaiah just was huge for you guys all night and even battled back to get on the field that last possession what did you see out of him and what do you tell him after coming so close oh I think Isaiah played just a great football game a courageous game I made so many plays especially down the stretch play after play I put Lamar obviously in the same category all those guys I mean those guys were making plays and fighting the offensive line I thought did a heck of a job out there a lot of question marks that you know the pun that's in the prognosticators had about the offensive line saying that that offensive line we couldn't do anything and uh to see the way they went out there and played against that defense I thought was pretty impressive and that's a challenge especially in this environment communication and there's going there were there were problems on both sides uh but uh I thought Isaiah played a great football game I was proud of him and a lot of other guys too John what are kind of the emotions though at the end of the game when you feel like okay you've tied the game and then you're told no talk about tion do disappoint you thought I mean I don't know what it looked like on the replay so I can't say but uh really couldn't tell on the big screen you guys probably had a better Viewpoint of it so what you about legal formation P yeah they put a thing out that they said they were going to call that uh differently I think understanding how differently we were the first offensive series of the season with that and I think they saw probably everybody watching it it' be interesting to see if they call it the same way the whole season you I'll challenge him to call it the same way they called it tonight the whole season so hopefully they'll be consistent about that Lamar has called Kansas City his Kryptonite how do you feel about his late drive and do give you confidence moving forward if you play them again I thought his late Drive was great and I thought he had some other good drives in there and some great conversions in there so uh uh we'll be looking forward to the Raiders you know we've got to get ready for the for the Raiders and that'll be a big challenge for us in our in our own home stadium a home opener so that's what we'll be getting ready for John how much was communication defensively early in the Midway through the third quarter difficult where you had to take the two timeouts yeah we just had some issues with with uh the substitutions back and forth they were running you know different groups on the field and stuff like that and and we did have some communication problems that's something that we'll have to iron out for sure we can be better with that we will be better with that uh and U that you know wasn't what we wanted so we'll have to improve on that we will John said something that happened on the TD pass where where they slip behind um yeah we just didn't play the defense exactly way obviously we didn't play the defense the right there's nobody deep back there so uh that was a that was that was we had C mistakes during the game that were a problem substitutions were an issue that was probably the one big mistake we had uh the rest of the way I thought our defense played really well I mean you know that's a heck of an offense out there and our guys played so hard fought uh fought against the run I thought did a good job against the Run covering their guys you know it's not easy with all the screens and all different things they do and then you've got uh uh Mahomes who extends and I thought D line and our rushers did good job of keeping him in there especially in the second half you know so so many good things happen uh but there's going to be a lot of things to work on for sure there's no doubt and that that would be one of them all right thanks okay thanks what was your viewpoint on the likely touchdown were you watching on the big screen did you think it was a a touchdown yeah absolutely I thought it was a touchdown and um that's what they called on the field and I didn't think it was enough evidence to uh overturn it but I feel like that'll be something that the refs will have to deal with uh whenever that time comes and that's out of my control roban um you know obviously couple mistakes as John referred to but how' you kind of feel taking the field against one of the League's best tatch Mahomes and how you guys you made out overall yeah it felt great uh heading into the game but obviously uh there was a lot of mistakes out there um and that's not what we pride ourselves on and I think that's starts with me uh communicating each and every detail throughout uh to the guys making sure we all on the same page and if we're all on the same page we're a tough defense to move the ball on but a lot of the things that happened was self-inflicted but hats off to those guys they um made us pay forward and hey it's a game of inches was it just first game stuff stuff that you kind of just have to work your way through or was it crowd noise what do you what was the kind of the impetus behind some of the communication issues yeah I don't think it's the first game things at all and I I think it's just more so each and every individual uh holding themselves to a higher standard and I think that starts with me leading the guys making sure the communication is up to par and then echoing it throughout and doing that throughout the game regardless of the circumstances there's no excuses whatsoever and you know heads off to those guys they won the game but we'll definitely see them again Roan what do you as a team do you feel I mean you nearly came back and and tied this game at what as a team what are you taking from from from this game all the great things and then all the negative things just building off building off off of those you know we have to look ourselves in the mirror each and every individual there's a lot of plays personally out there today that I I wish I could get back uh I didn't feel like I played my best game and I think you know when I play my best game I feel like that Echoes out throughout the defense so I think it just starts with myself personally and I have to be better in order for us to be uh better as a defense and when we do that we'll be great but you know to next week uh it'll be a great opportunity to bounce back you keep saying it starts with you why is it that you're putting that responsibility on yourself I'm the leader of the defense and there's countly countless other leaders out there as well but I look myself in the mirror and I hold myself to the highs of high standards and at the end of the day I get the call in from the DC and I Echo the call out to the guys and I have to make sure we're all on the same page so that's what it is and it it'll be that way so it is what it is but you know just take things and you build off of it what you guys do in the second half cuz the first half they're clearly we're hitting kind of the middle of the field in the second half you guys seem to deny that make him ear a little bit more yeah I think it was just uh some adjustments uh hats off the uh zo for that uh making adjustments at halftime um knowing where they was hitting us at and couple plays like myself personally when three uh ran the option rout on me I think number four ran the option route on me uh so got to be all over that um and yeah that's what it is thought it was a BS horse collar but it is what it is what was your perception of that play along the chief sideline m m oh he he flopped uh yeah he flopped uh that's why the referees didn't call it it was a great call by a great no call by the ref but uh whoever 88 is I don't know who he is but he better watch watch himself he did he did a little slick push was there somebody on the sideline that pushed you as well yeah whoever number 88 is I have no idea who he is but I'll see him when I see him and ran one of the other leaders on this team is obviously Lamar what did you feel about his effort tonight it was a great effort by Lamar uh personally as a defense we should have never put put him in that position uh the being able to come back from like that but it was hats off to him it's the reason he's a two-time MVP but as a defense we should have never put those guys in the position so it starts with us as a defense and eliminating explosive plays eliminating countless mistakes that we had and then giving the offense uh many opportunities to do what they do and we'll do that the rest of the way so this the worst will play all season so I can promise you that all right thanks for it looks like on the replays that maybe the foot was out what what's your perspective on whether that was a touchdown or not I mean at this point it's just you got to live with the call I mean you got to look on obviously watch the film see we could do better to not put ourselves in the situation where you know to leave in the ref's hands to be able to call that call and call the game so you know I say is just watch the film see what we can improve on and go into next week so we
