Special Edition: Adding Another Cook to the RB Kitchen | Dallas Cowboys 2024

[Music] W go [Music] [Music] [Music] Cowboys we only have one more week till football the NFL is on its way back and we are back here on Special Edition from the star in Frisco with Isaiah stach Barry church and Nate Newton a trio of former Dallas Cowboys I'm Kyle yman glad you're with us gentlemen the preseason check training camp is in the books officially even the portion in Frisco has concluded it's officially game week prep week for this Dallas Cowboys team Barry I'll start with you how of your expect ations changed going into the 2024 season based off of what you've seen in the preseason and in training camp well they have changed slightly and I'm just going to go on offensive side of the football you know I believe this was going to be a balanced attack going into the season but how this running back room has shaped up I believe that it's going to be a lot on Dak Prescott shoulders to get the job done which means passing it a lot more than I thought this team would be hopefully that could be successful yeah my expectations really haven't changed much outside of the fact that I think this defense is going to once again be effective obviously you had the tenure with Dan Quinn and he was very effective with those guys creating pressure creating turnovers a lot of man-to-man coverage and now you bring in a Mike Zimmer who's playing a different style of Defense but yet what we've seen in this sample size through training camp and through the preseason these guys are turnover monsters as well now with the signing of CD lamb I think my expectations are the same except for the defense I thought the defense would be much better with Mazi maturing during training camp but it seemed like he didn't mature so I'm a little shaky there and we'll talk a little bit more about Mazy Smith as we go along further into the show but let's start with the biggest news of the week CD lamb signs his extension four years $136 million that's 34 per year on average the second biggest non-quarterback contract in NFL history Isaiah when you look at CD lamb and of course the hold out that happened is there enough ramp up time he signed with about 12 days until the opener is there enough ramp up time for him to be ready for the NFL season I'm not wanting to tell a man what he can and can't do but I do not believe that there's enough r up time for him I really don't I think that you know for to ask a man to be sprinting to be sprinting for for Miles during a game and then expect him to not have any soft tissue issues or to not you know have any issues in terms of guys pushing up against them when you haven't been doing so all a training camp I think that's a high expectation level I think he'll probably be about 85% but then again hey you're your own man yeah I'm with you on this one isaah when you talk about not enough ramp up time 12 days that's about six practices out there and you worry about soft tissue injuries hamstrings quads cast we've seen it happen time and time again now the connection between him and Dak Prescott I feel like will still be there I mean they have years of connection worth of uh football play out there so to me the connection will be there but overall I don't believe six practices is enough to make sure that this guy's going to be ready for the season just a snap count it's a simple thing snap count and stick to it as close as you can not in practice but in the game you know if he if you won't put him on 30 30 plays leave him at that you know and and don't panic as the game go on if if you look at cidd lamb and his impact from last season he is the number one offensive option and he just got paid like the number one offensive option he may be the first of a couple dominoes to fall I think next one up would probably be D Prescott if you'd think too and he even talked about it a little bit earlier in the week saying I want Dak Prescott here we all know how I feel about that it's all certainly in the works for the Cowboys front office and player Personnel but at least we've got 88 back in the building he's not the only addition to this Cowboys team that's been in a Pro Bowl before however because the Cowboys this week signing Dalvin cook of course dvin cook hasn't had the production over the last couple of seasons like he did previously here's what both Ezekiel Elliott did in New England and then dvin cook did with the New York Jets during the 20123 season so lots of uh drop off I think you could say the two combined for over 3500 yards in the 20120 season not the same in 2023 Barry when you look at dvin Cook what kind of impact can he have uh I just think it'll be a great depth signing I mean just in case anything happens to Ezekiel Elliott or Rico D you have a horse in the stable a you can bring up um this is not the dvin cook from the Minnesota Viking days this is a dvin cook that we saw last year that really wasn't able to crack the lineup or get things going in the Jets or with Baltimore so to me this is a guy that's going to be a depth signing if anything does happen you got a guy in the stable that can come in there and produce as a running back we have Pounders all over the place we got Zeke we got reico D we got Hunter limy this guy has to come in the game and be a change of pace back he's is the guy that can catch the ball out of the back field catch the ball we need some big runs we need some 40 plus yard run and you know we got what three times to bring him up yeah make sure he's fresh yeah I'm not sure if he is that change of pace back though big dog I I know that he's a square square to line of scrimmage go down he'll fall forward we have two other guys in the stable just like that in Ezekiel Elliot and Rico d uh there's no no harm no foul in terms of bringing a veteran who's very experienced who has been successful throughout his career and who was physical and tough I'm never against bringing guys like that into soccer room and let's see what he can do I think it's a lowrisk high reward signing for the Cowboys you put him on the practice squad he's not taking up a 53 man roster he's not doing anything specific to to Really hinder this football team it's all going forward and that's the kind of signing you want to make if you're talking about your football team whether he makes an impact or not on the active roster that is yet to be seen but we did talk about CD lamb we know his impact will be massive and when we come back Nick eatman goes one-on-one with the newest Dallas Cowboys sign CD lamb after his record-breaking deal special edition presented by AT&T is brought to you by your North Texas Ford dealers Ford is the best in Texas Reliant official energy provider of the Dallas Cowboys blockchain.com make your crypto play today and by AT&T official sponsor of the Dallas Cowboys [Music] this segment is brought to you by your North Texas Ford dealers Ford is the best in Texas well it took a little bit of extra time but CD lamb is back in the building for the Dallas Cowboys and wide receiver one is happier than ever of course four years $136 million and 100 million guaranteed we'll do that for a person but Nick eatman catches up with CD lamb after he signed the second biggest wide receiver deal in NFL history all right well it's all smiles here at the star with CD lamb and you're definitely doing a lot of smiling you just said welcome back home how does it feel to to finally get the contract out of the way and what does it mean for you your family all that um quite honestly it's still surreal to me um a great moment obviously I'm happy for myself for my family appreciate the Jones family shout out my agent for getting this done it was long it was a process but we're here now I'm back home lost of words let's go some more attention I know that all right well before we we we do that and let's talk a little bit you said the process how tough was it to see from afar your your teammates their training camp I know you always been a team guy just how tough was it to be away from them it wasn't pleasure boy at all um if I can I can't even count on my two hands how many times I took on my agent like I'm ready to be out there so uh I know he's he got kind of tired of hearing it so uh workouts were whatever you know just looking at paying attention from afar was it was a bit of sweet but shout out my guys I know they're working I know they're prepared for this moment and um when I get back in a fold we know what I bring to the table and that's just to bring to camaraderie what what is the difference between being in shape and we saw the videos all in shape but also football shape and how tough is that going to be for the next 10 days or so it'll be different um obviously with the pads on added extra weight 15 pounds maybe but um other than that I feel like I prepare for everything else shout out Dr ree by the way um getting me ready for the resistance and all that pushing and shoving it'll be different but I'll be ready for it and then I know this is cliche but I have to ask what what are we what are we buying what's the first thing or the second thing is there anything big purchase on on the horizon we'll see when I buy it all right will we all see it or we'll see when I buy it all right Shadow world all right sounds good all right that's Cowboys franchise receiver CD lamb those are the types of conversations you can have when you sign a deal of that magnitude CD lamb a welcome site for this Cowboys wide receiver room when we come back here on special edition we're going to take a look to the defensive side donon Bland's injury might give an opportunity for cayb Carson to step in to a bigger role is he ready for the challenge when we come back this segment was brought to you by your North Texas Ford dealers Ford is the best in [Music] Texas this segment is brought to you by the NFL fan of the Year presented by Captain Morgan welcome back into Special Edition from the star in Frisco as we continue to look at this 2024 season Barry Church you talk about the cornerback position all the time oh yeah and the Cowboys been very lucky at the cornerback position with guys like Trayvon Diggs and Jordan Lewis and this guy named donon Bland but they've been so unlucky with those three guys specifically when it comes to injuries I mean how big of an injury is donon Bland out six to eight weeks with a stretch fracture in his foot now this is a devastating injury to a secondary that I thought was going to be the strength of this defense now you do have you know Dave coming back from ACL and hopefully he can return Return To That All Pro status but you're going to have to throw a young Corner out there into the fire early in the regular season and to me that's going to put a lot of pressure on that defensive line because if they're not able to get pressure on the quarterbacks you better believe they're going to pick on that young guy in the secondary so to me the defensive line has got to step up and whoever they do decide to put out there at that quarterback position he better be ready for uh some passes coming his way yeah we understand that this is very detrimental to this defense but I'm going to go ahead and go to the positive side of this the positive side is it's a bone injury and it's not a ligament so it's going to heal relatively well you have the fact that Mike Zimmer's coming in and he primarily plays a Zone scheme so you're not going to be asking more of your young rookies um like Kaylin Carson come out here and and make these one-on-one type coverages for entire game so I think you know he's still going to be able to fall into different plays like we saw through throughout the preseason where turn offers just simply just literally fell into these guys laps hopefully you see more of that but that those are the positive sides of this potential situation one thing about these guys and up on Al Harris all been great one-on-one guys I just wonder now would they go with a little bit more Zone to kind of help this guy Carson to keep people in front of him or will they just continue to go at it because Harris think he's just found another diamond in the row and we'll talk about that here in a second because he's not the only one that's excited about kayin Carson stepping up it's a detrimental injury no doubt about it and Duron Bland will be missed for those six to eight weeks but Jerry Jones talked about the rookie and what he's seen so far I like the fact that he's um playing at the level he is for how long a time which is not much in the NFL and he certainly going to get a great opportunity to fill in here we've had a couple of guys come in here and do pretty well the last three or four years at rookie quarterback so maybe he'll make all pro Jerry Jones presented by Texas lotto Isaiah since you brought up Carson first I'll start with you on this is he ready to take a step into a starting role and how will be he be challenged early on he doesn't have a choice KY at this point in time he doesn't have a choice Don Bland got thrown into the same situation when when he was a drafty and he stepped up in answered the call the following year he stepped up and answered the call so I think you know Dallas Cowboys have been spoiled in that regard that all their quarterbacks and who are being coached by an amazing coach in Al Harris have been in a position to step up and make plays and be relied upon uh by their defense and I think that he's in a situation now after the precence he had he had a down game his first game and he came back and had had another had a good game and kind of kind of eliminated that um I'm hoping that he's able to step into that role yeah I'm with you on that one and it's going to be tough to fill the shoes of BL Bland you're talking about a guy with 14 interceptions um his first two years basically the definition of a ball Hawking corner but like you talked about earlier you know Zimmer is one of the greatest defensive Minds in the National Football League so even if they do decide to do a little bit of man I'm sure he'll find a way to hide that corner by either leaning the safety over to him for the Deep routs or having a linebacker kind of buzzing underneath to handle the shallow routes Zimmer will take care of his young guy especially early on in the season what we have to do here is just hope that this kid stays out and the rest they got a secondary stand they're very thin keep your eye on the waver wire and available guys that are can be out there and there are going to be veterans that are available but Barry if you're a rookie what's the number one thing that kayln Carson is going to be tested with right off the bat it's going to be communication and understanding that Playbook I mean we all understand manto man coverage out there you got this guy but when you talk about Zone coverage you got to understand where your help is make sure you leverage that so you understand like if a linebacker's coming out to you I got to stay on that outside shoulder because I got all the help inside if you got beat on the outside there's no one there to help you so you got to understand Zone you got to understand where your Leverage is at and where your help is when it comes to this defense there's a lot of pressure on the rookie to get the job done but he's not the only one that's in a pressure cooker for the 2024 season when we come back who is under the most pressure we play a game with our analysts up in studio we'll have Dak Prescott versus Mike McCarthy when we come back this segment was brought to you by the NFL fan of the Year presented by Captain Morgan [Music] back here on special edition there are plenty of players that are under pressure in 2024 we've got Isaiah stanback Barry Church Nate Newton if anybody knows what the pressure of playing for the Dallas Cowboys is it's these three gentlemen so let's start with the top Mike McCarthy head coach of your Cowboys going into year five he's in a contract year but so is his quarterback Dak Prescott so Isaiah I'll start with you on this one who's under more pressure going into the 2024 season to suceed I'm going say Mike McCarthy and just from the standpoint he's in his last year's contract just like Dak Prescott however you know when it comes to head coaching POS positions there's not a lot of opportunities that are out there so I think Mike McCarthy has a lot to prove obviously the last year he was in Green Bay he won a Super Bowl on the last year of his contract and I think they're hoping the same thing here in Dallas yeah I'm with you on that it's got to be Mike McCarthy on this one if you look at it no matter what happens with Dak Prescott this season he's going to be either the highest paid NFL quarterback somewhere he's going to be starting somewhere as as a quarterback when you look at Mike McCarthy if he's not able to get the job done he may have to go the offensive coordinator route in order to get another chance at a head coaching job I mean we just seen one of the greatest uh coaches of all time and Bill bich not able to get a job this offseason so to me the pressure is on Big Mike to get the job done yes the pressure is on Mike mccarthur you know dealing with two uh new offensive lineman rookies he's dealing with a defensive line that is kind of soft in the middle so yes he it's that type of pressure that I think he has I don't think he worried about the contract cuz he will handle business he will certainly handle business CU there's a lot going on business-wise when it comes to Dallas Cowboy let's talk about the offensive line two rookies Tyler gon first round pick out of Oklahoma and then Cooper BB third round pick out of Kansas State Nate I'll start with you on this one who's under the most pressure you would want to thank Cooper Cooper B that he would be under the most precious move pressure moving from guard to Center but he seemed to make the adjustment well we'll find out the first game but Tyler gon has a lot on his table he has not played a full season in college we want to check his endurance and we want to check and see if he's stable on that outside so I think Tyler giden has the most pressure yeah I'm with you on that one big dog it's got to be guiding uh we all understand on that left tackle position it's kind of similar to cornerback you can be on an island by yourself out there and CER BB at that Center Spot he's going to have help each and every time he's going to have all pro to his left and Tyler Smith and All Pro to his right and Zack Martin and also Tyler gton beating that first round pick he's supposed to be that air parent to a future Hall of Famer in Tyron Smith so he's going to have have to go out there and get the job done well I disagree with both of you guys I'm going with BB baby and the reason why I'm going with BB baby is because of the standpoint he is playing a center position we know that his snaps have improved but his Snaps are not natural or secondhand yet okay they're not they're not just natural also he's in charge of the entire offensive line he has to set the protection he is literally hearing from Dak and he's going out there he's making the calls based upon what he sees that means that other guys are doing whatever he says to do including both all Pros that are to his left and his right now switching to the defensive side of the ball how about two guys going into year two Barry Mazy Smith first round pick from last year or de marvan overshown coming off of his ACL injury oh this one's easy K it's got to be Mazy Smith going into his second season I mean you're a first round draft pick um last year it wasn't the greatest season for him we didn't even see um flashes of Potential from this guy last year over Sean coming off a injury this will be his first opportunity to go out there so he'll get a little bit of Grace but the pressure and the clock is ticking for Mr Mazy Smith and when you talk about Mazy Smith when you talk about de marvan overon both guys would be welcome sites because they didn't have a ton of contribution from the 2023 draft class as a whole those two guys specifically will get an opportunity and they will get some snaps along the way so great Point by everybody I like the disagreement over I say make sure we have some debate on this show when we come back though what are the keys to a successful 2024 season it's going to be a rough start going up against miles Garrett the reigning Defensive Player of the Year closed captioning is brought to you by the Texas Lottery Cowboy scratch tickets from the Texas Lottery are here play [Music] today special edition presented by AT&T was brought to you by your North Texas Ford dealers Ford is the best in Texas Miller light the only beer of the Dallas Cowboys and by AT&T official sponsor of the Dallas Cowboys no such thing as a ramp up period for the Dallas Cowboys how about these first four games Cleveland coming off of a playoff birth then you go to play at home against New Orleans that's a Buton Saints team that really needs to win in week two then you've got the Ravens who were a playoff team a year ago reigning MVP of course Lamar Jackson at the quarterback spot and then you have your first divisional matchup with the Giants Barry what are the keys to a successful start to the year you got to figure out that run defense two out of those four teams are physical run teams so you got to figure out that run defense for sure I was going to say don't get injured that's number one thing you do not have the depth to be trying to figure out exactly how you going to get through those first four games play your ball try to stay safe offensively or defensively when you're in the Red Zone handle your business got to handle the business you got to do it early because of course they break it up in quarters of the Season got a little extra to it now with 17 games but you got to get off to a hot start if you hope to really make an impact for Barry Church Isaiah standback Nate Newton of Kyle yman that does it for our first regular season episode next week we preview the opener September 8th for the Cleveland Browns
