Minnesota Vikings need to stop being obsessed with late-round QB draft picks

these two guys have Minnesota sports flowing in their veins Mackie and Sh on score North and scor.com it's a Monday statements edition of Mackey and Jud on a Tuesday recapping a long weekend in sports in life and gentlemen I don't know about you but when my alarm went off in the morning it was NFL Chimes because it is officially officially football season not for my butt bar there you go there we go now it's Thursday night Friday night from Brazil yeah did you see like the the memo that the players received in Brazil basically uh stay in your hotel room yeah there is a I I had a friend who went there a while back there is a uh um really really good professional pickpocketers there yeah so like they get your phone they get your wallet but but I mean like Mission Impossible it's not like you feel it you don't feel like they they steal stuff from purses like just reach in like it's like an art form yeah oh yeah yeah if they're expert pickpocketers I don't think you should be able to like catch on that oh how many people like put a wallet in their back pocket though in 2024 um I actually just invested into a brand new wallet for the first time in 6 years I've just had the cheapest dumbest thin I like thin wallets I do not want a big fat George castanza wallet I don't know how people sit on that I don't know how people use that every day I will say though it's probably in my back pocket more than 50% of the time depends on the pants feels dangerous depends on the pants I'm wearing like my joggers today they don't have a back pocket so I can't put in the back pocket but like if I have dress pants you're asking for those you're asking for the pick pocketers to start but starting with what you said like 20 years ago occurred to me why am I sitting on something right yeah my back's all out of alignment why like like I I can literally put this in my front pocket which is absolutely fine right yep so so it wasn't the pickpocketing threat the thing now is comfort thing for you it was Comfort but the thing now is on this women with their phones put them in their back pockets all the time okay sticking halfway out you know yeah but I mean I see it all Dawn does that like it's but I think done by a lot of people I think Amel Hassen talked about this I think it's a dangerous game combining your wallet and phone as one cuz if that thing whole gets stolen then you're really bleeped oh good like then like you lose your wallet and your phone all in one compartment I don't know if I like that I mean it's a good point that's generally how I roll is the do you the the phone wallet so it's just convenient but not me not me I separate got you got be naked uh I have a statement to start off on this this Tuesday Monday statements on Tuesday yeah be careful with your wallet don't come out with your phone no my statement is never get excited about late round quarterbacks jiren Hall Seattle Seahawk his Vikings career uh time of death I guess it would have been on the waiver wire sometime yesterday but yeah he he doesn't even he doesn't even get into a second year uh as a Vikings quarterback but it's funny like when he was drafted I feel like even us like okay could you talk yourself into him maybe being developed look at some of the other guys and we and then we pick out the one example out of a 100 like Brock pie was a 7th round pick and he almost won MVP or Tom Brady was a six round pick and look what happened to him and uh as we found out for every Brock perie there are 20 jiren halls and we've kept a tally on this for the last several years as the Vikings have been in the hunt for drafting quarterbacks so I believe now the tally is 150 quarter backs drafted in the two I think it's 155 drafted in the 2000s fourth round or later so like 150 155 and about nine of them have panned out in a quarter of a century and uh 90 to 95% are just complete busts who weren't even backups and you can I think add jiren hall probably to that bucket see I think there's so much fun though because it's the it's the brief flirtation and delance that that makes it special right jiren hall JD booty McLoud bethl Thompson hinei it's the chase it's the chase exactly it's the and and there's always because they're their uh either late round draft picks or sometimes just flat out udfas it's the like what if what if they get this guy what if he does this look at that arm look at that arm look at oh my god did did you see the third play of the preseason game back in 2012 so you're right but I also think like I I wouldn't want to stop now cuz I can't stop with Slappy quarterbacks but they're all it's I get that you have to take shots because it's the most important position in sports you do need backup quarterbacks and so but even the the list of guys fourth round or later that have become viable backup quarterbacks is so this by my calculation last quarter Century Brock pie kurk cousins fourth round pick so if you cut the line fifth round and further it's even worse Tony Romo was undrafted had a nice career Dak Prescott I think was a fourth rounder Tyrod Taylor Matt Castle Ryan Fitzpatrick David Gerard all those guys were like multi-year decent starters and then there's kind of the the backups who Maybe started for a while Keenum Brian Hoyer Garder mshu Trevor Simeon I mean now now we start to really draw a hard line so it's it's even hard to find a like a backup quarterback that you would trust when you're fishing around fifth and sixth and seventh rounds but I get it you got you got to take shots but jiren Hall it was a it it wasn't a good run but it was a run as a viking quarterb we tried to get you back you you just SP yeah he spur the Vikings cuz he is the I think the Seattle Seahawks only have two quarterbacks on their active roster so he signed to the practice squad as their third and here he would have been the third but I mean we tried we tried to keep him he rejected us damn it rejected us yeah go ahead Dex oh okay uh next statement for me week one for the Vikings is a must-win it's a must-win game week one baby must win Giants softy on the schedule to start they have a gauntlet of tough opponents early on they had even with their first uh three of two of their first three games at home against the Niners and Texans those are still very good teams those won't you won't be favored even at home against those teams you have to go to Green Bay early you have Detroit you are on a short week against the Rams after that it is going to be tough sledding to get wins early on week one against a bad Giants team is a must win that defensive Line's really good I'm a little worried that Garrett Bradberry is going to be pancak a few times however I think the Vikings have the chance here to control that game if they want to if they establish the runner early and they get the the their Playmakers the ball I think the Vikings have to win week one against the Giants it's a must win a lot of cliches in that last sentence a must- win establish the run and get ball to Playmakers the checklist lot lot of the checklist there I was a little thrown off too by Jud uh I'm sorry I you like pass you like passed you kind I a backup quarterbacks I had to like I was thrusted into the offense under under Center under the guard doing shows and stuff thought i' throw I thought I passed the ball I play I put the ball behind the back pass and you didn't like communicate before the before the Huddle it was audible it was an audible I got to the line of scrimmage audible you're just like you're just like the play clock's winding downa Omaha I mean my goodness gracious but it I mean if yeah if they lose it's it depends on what what is the bar like it's a must-win if you if you are praying to make the playoffs right yeah I don't know there's a must- win in my opinion this this year because my expectation is not like they should get off to a hot start but where I agree completely with Dean is they should win I think they're a better team than the Giants yeah they're a road favorite yeah so so they so they should win but I don't know I honestly right now don't know what the bar is cuz I don't know if there is a bar for 2024 like like do you have to like like oh my God you lost this game it's a Calamity it's a catastrophe I don't know that that game exists as much the ceiling is the roof thank you Michael Jordan Vikings okay now I'll go now I'll go I think I'm going to go actually I'm no no no I got this I I got this I'm going to go I'm going to stay with football but I'm going to go away from the Vikings for a second and I'm going to revisit last Thursday night at Huntington Bank Stadium and here's my statement man of all of the teams I watch in this town right now you know so so the twins the wild the Wolves the Vikings and the golfers the golfers offense might be the single most painful thing going in Minnesota sports right now like it might be everybody has their problems Vikings got some problems wolves actually have a lot of good wild has problems the twins we can talk about and and certainly will on a Trevor ploof Tuesday but I'm not joking I think right now the single most difficult thing to watch is that offense it is atrocious and I don't know that the new quarterback brosmer like he struggled but to me this starts with Fleck now who by the way came in if you guys Pete thill who is a very well-respected well-respected National College writer did a great in-depth piece on fle either when he got here or around the time he left Western Michigan about what an offensive genius this guy was and if you guys recall when he came here you know they had Tanner Morgan Rashad baitman they did some good things this is awful so they've had one that 2019 season just anecdotally one year where you would say okay the offense was was hanging points on teams left and right but that offense also just kind of felt like drop back and throw it up to firstr NFL wide receiver Rashad baitman they've had some good running games and they've had some good running backs but yeah it is uh it's the opposite of innovative by the way the I think I saw that it's 18 Big 10 teams right and all of them have now played a game yeah the Big 10 is now 17 and one yep after the first leg of the season the Gophers being the now In fairness some of the the Gophers played an actual opponent in North Carolina some of the other big 10 schools were playing you know directional schools from God knows where but yeah it's it's so tough because he is largely one of the better coaches in like the last 75 years of go for football and I've kind of told myself after that 2019 season the the bar for this program is not Ohio State you're not bringing in those level of recruits it's just like it's not it's not Michigan you're not bringing in five stars I don't think we can ask for a whole lot more than what he gave us in 2019 which is 11-2 a New Year's Day bulll victory over Auburn great and I've kind of told myself for 5 years I am now emotionally distancing myself from the outcome here no no longer am I going to get pissed on a Thursday because they went wide right for a game-winning field goal against North Carolina uh but it it does raise a question of what do you want this program to be is it too reactionary to start talking about PJ Flex job security or do we just have to sort of swallow hard and deal with the fact that you know what this program is it is once every six years they might pop up and compete in the top half of the Big 10 the two Miss field goals sucked okay deciding to run on Third and nine in the red zone is the most Preposterous stupid thing I've seen and so this is the thing I I don't I honestly he can keep his job I don't care about that he shouldn't he should not be he should be distanced from the offense almost completely which means he'd quit which I is offensive I me you got to go you got to go to him and say dude you can't you're just not good at this anymore I don't know what happened you can recruit that's fine but um you know you're running on and and the crowd is booing you and you're running on Third and nine in the red zone of a home game I mean what are we doing here the third nine call was why it's an eyesore it's an eyesore it's like it's like the golfers on a weekly basis now at least at at home games go out out on Huntington Bank field and Dro garbage they litter they're littering college football is there a big a bigger gap between how a coach comes off no in his marketing recruiting no he has a level of brashness and even I would say Innovation to the way that he markets and recruits right versus how cowardly his play calling is no no there's not it's just like dude third and nine you're l and by the way football Karma struck him down cuz they were they were playing conservatively they were trying to avoid a turnover so they could line up a 26 yard field goal and they Clank the 26 yard field goal which is football God saying come on dude come on you got to at least try going for it third and nine eyesore okay absolute eyesore um okay I'm going off the sports grid here for a second you guys can bring it back if you want to but here's my next statement we need to talk about State Fair expansion oh yes TW 12 days might not be enough to contain the Minnesota State Fair and I see Jud shaking his head Jud is antiy sort of fun Gathering outside of like I'm anti-state Fair a sporting event but but I get your point here this this point makes sense but the Minnesota State Fair broke its fifth attendance record this year on Sunday I think we may have had a sixth attendance record yesterday we're still waiting for the final tally I believe on Labor Day but offals counted 2565 people who visited the State Fairgrounds on Sunday which shattered the previous Second Sunday attendance record by over 11,000 visitors uh so I I don't know if it's 14 days do we need three weeks but it kind of kind of feels like we're trying to cram too many people do we need to expand the footprint I'm I'm open to expanding the footprint or the number of days or both should we move it PA that that that footprint is locked in what if the wils came in and built a bigger footprint for the state let's go to um South duth lot of area there lot of area there so like Forest Lake or let's go to where I'm just saying if if the expansion of the State Fair might call for a sports-like conversation about does a state fair have to be moved to a bigger footprint it does Fe I mean I'm telling you the facilities the bathrooms little grimy out outdated that if this was a sports team they'd be threatening they'd be threatening they would say our state fair you're in trouble you never know we might be going to Portland if I'm the yeah if I'm the wils I'm looking to maybe build a outdoor concert venue bigger footprint better parking shovel Hotel yeah oh yeah I mean they expand that blue Barn area like that was an expansion about 5 six years ago like that and that was a an no no no the Blue Barn the Blue Barn is is like basically south of yes the south of our our booth in that corner area the lot like that area is only like five six years old that like that's an and they expanded it pretty big is that the food the food building or is that different it's different okay the food building is like where the mouse like where the cheese curds are where the ballpark Cafe is man you haven't been to the fair like do you do you not have your your fair legs down the BL Barn is no I I don't ever walk dude we were there I think I don't know Jud and I were there every day for like 6 hours for years and years and years and that stopped a few years ago and I just I go like once on the Saturday that we do our live show and so I just I just need a break from being there hours and hours and hours a day I respect the state fair I feel like Jud disrespects the state fair I have a healthy love and respect for the State Fair it's just a fair it got a little too clingy and codependent for me so just just to be clear I don't like fairs across the board this is not a particular Fair it is all fairs I don't like I um I ran into so Ross brindle's dad works at my local liquor store I see him all the time and he was talking about on F I went in there on Friday night and he was talking about how Ross was you know criticizing and was was was very tired of the State Fair of all all the stuff and everything that goes into it but then he goes in the same sentence but I'm going to go on Sunday cuz semi Sonic's performing and I said if that's not the most Ross Brendle thing I have ever heard he's working his ass off and he deserves a day off but he's going to go to the fair and go see semic because it's a mid90s band and he needs to see them he needs to see closing time in and they finished with closing time for the fair which was so I'm I'm now 31 going on 32 be 32 in December and and the Labor Day scar still hit me as if I'm starting school the next day I have been out of high school for 15 years I've been out of college for 10 years almost and the Labor Day scaries are still very much there they preconditioned and wired from when you were seven years old right it it finally gone I don't like okay so I get my mid-50s it'll this will this takes till you're in your 40s at some point yeah like like your 30s it doesn't leave I I was like that for a while it always just it felt like you it felt like things were like shifting and turning and it was a time for reset and you dreaded it when you were a kid because it was the end of summer into school but the way to reframe it now is it's no longer the end of something into something you hate it's the beginning of something that you love which is football season very Dr Seuss of you I like that and that duct fails into perfectly it's almost as if we discussed this my statement which is I love fall it's brisk out today it's windy fall is coming the one place where I have shifted completely is I used to love spring and then you know because spring it was uh then summer would come BL n fall now chill there's a chill it's football baseball playoffs hockey basketball and you don't have to confuse it with winter oh my God it's going to be winter just enjoy fall like enjoy these days it's just I as I've aged I now appreciate this so much and this is now my favorite time of year from both a weather perspective because those hot humid days are gone and from a sports perspective and Phil I think you're exactly right I think that's why the the old uh PTSD about school starting left me because now I'm like no this is an awesome time of year and coming up next instead of your weird teacher sliding in it's Collins were sliding in bra Rico from Brazil stay in your hotel room yourself there don't leave your I love this league well we might have some problems there who cares how much money can we make uh but yeah dude I hooded sweat how does how does the weather know it feels like August 30th 31st it's still like 85 and humid and then all of a sudden like September 1st de in the morning and we'll have one more Spike up I I bet I bet we have like three or 4 days left where it's like hot and and what's funny about that to me is that run in September always feels so weird it's like it shouldn't be this hot now it feels out of place yes it feels displaced but anyway I don't know but I love it just back to the scariest thing and even yesterday just trying trying to we we made the mistake of going out and and doing a couple little errands and we were like ah people are well State Fair traffic is one thing but people are just in a mad rush to get school supplies and different things uh but I feel like of the three of us Dean is the most likely to get the scaries either in like annual form at the end of August or Sunday form at the beginning slend of a week absolutely it I do not like and I went to in college at s cloud we started the week before Labor Day so like in high schools in Minnesota we most of them start after Labor Day but like the first week of college is syllabus week it's a joke of a week like it you're not you're not doing anything so really like your first actual week of college class when I was in St Cloud was still basically the day after Labor Day and I just I I cannot shake it and also my my baby brother-in-law is like starting senior year today so I don't think that was around him all weekend so like he was also having PTSD of starting high school today his senior year last year yeah senior year oh God he's going to clean up that's the greatest year but at the same same time it's still it's still high school like I still have nightmares of like forgetting that I have a test that day or I can't open my locker like I it it is I'm telling you man it isul my like you forgot your lock combination or yeah yeah like I I can't I can't open it which is weird cuz I also I only had a locker two of my four years in I didn't have one junior or senior year I just didn't have this happen frequently or you no I was really good at yeah this um I was good at it this dream will eventually at at some point soon pivot to a work dream which is you're supposed to cover a game and you forgot and you're late and you and you recover and try and get there and you get there and you can't get to the Press Box I have I have those or I can't I only move I can only move backwards I can't run forwards I also have those ones a lot too I can move backwards but I can't run forward to the place I need I need to go I feel like there's there has to be some psycholog IAL oh fors there like like a therapist would be able to unpack some a sleep therapist if if anyone's if any sponsor needs a sleep there I will gladly uh uh submit myself to some Sleep Therapy I'm I'm all in find me up I think we're going to go deeper on this I know we are on the squar twin show but I will just throw a little appetizer out for that here with this statement the twins have a problem with reyce Lewis right now and I don't know who's to blame I don't know what the pie chart of like blame or who's that fult here is but they're throwing him out at second base which like they' they've got potentially Korea coming back they they want Brooks Lee to play Short Stop maybe even third base and it looks like the organization is trying to guide reyce Lewis over to second base if not part-time maybe full maybe full-time at some point and uh there's been some Rumblings behind the scenes that he hasn't been thrilled with this idea midseason like go play second base for the first time this is from the athletic right Dex the screenshot you sent yep from that from Dan stri has has has the same quotes too so talked all he did open up in Tampa Bay yeah he said I'm terrified out there I've got so many things going on and now we're going to add in second base I've got Carlos Santana yelling at me hey cover first because I didn't even know I had to I mean I knew but I probably would have been a second late little things like that are just adding extra elements to an August September push that's important to me and he talks about not wanting to mess up the defense for a team that's in a playoff hunt right now it's not spring training or AAA for that matter so this is either this is either him throwing a tantrum because he doesn't want to play second base or the organization has not prepared him physically mentally whatever either way spiritually the key player for this organization's present and future is not happy at all with the organization's attempt to get him to play second base in the middle of a September playoff so I covered this on Sunday okay let's back up here so you did make it to the Press Box you I made it to the Press Box and I also so these quotes are very in interesting and my and here's what I surmise the twins have a royce Lewis problem and the twins have a twins problem cuz this guy can be a superstar Okay so trle little bit lightly here but I also don't think him playing second on occasion and and to be clear on Sunday for the first time ever he was plugged into into a game at second in the sixth so he started at third he's never started there before but in the postgame press conference it's funny when you ask a direct question of Rocco you often won't get the on the record answer you want but he's very good at dropping in things it it's much like oconnell on his terms so he said he was asked question because Royce hit the three-run winning home run on Sunday and Rocco was asked you know was great he hit the home run like everyone was focused on the home run I'm like he played second base let's talk about that Rocco said yeah that's great it was awesome you know huge home run that's Roy but uh but more impressive to me was he played second Pace Roco said this and in the midst of his very coordinated wellth thought out quote he said we told him you're going to second base in other words he didn't have a choice and and I noticed when he came out very late so for the for the top of the six he was very late they they were Santana was already warming up Brooks Lee and Miranda and Roy came out and but anyway so Roco talks about this so I'm like well that's intriguing and I actually asked him I said Roco said you keep saying things like you told him to go play second and that you know he's talked about his um his fear of playing there before is this a problem or something and again he was going to answer that the way that he chose to so it wasn't a great response it wasn't bad but then Roy in the clubhouse I pulled him aside and I said hey I'm Jud from score North he's like I love you guys' show I said what do you think about playing second base he goes I'm not going to comment on that right now so clearly he wanted to think out his comments which he then gave in Tampa Bay but the point is we've got a double problem here one is Roy Lewis playing second base when you think about especially in a pinch what he can add can help this team but this team also and we talked about this last week is putting him at second paase and Rey is and Roy is basically if you read those quotes fully is lecturing the twins he's saying this is something you do in Spring training this and and he ain't wrong about that necessarily so I think that this is a double-sided problem which this strikes me as the way that you would treat a guy who was an okay player but both sides have to be careful here because the twins are asking a guy in the midst of a season to move to a new position I'd like to see him play that but we know that Roy is going to be Royce as well so we got a problem here on both sides in true Batman transition Sounders fashion more to come different bat time different bat Channel we will talk about
