fanduel.com lockon to get started on today's episode we are going to talk about the Everlasting story that is the expected trade of Chicago Bears quarterback Justin fields and we've got the perfect man to do it Lauren Cox of lockon bear is going to lead us through that discussion we're also going to talk about the latest free agent moves made here in the early days of the new league year but Lauren we got to start off with a couple of quarterback trades that went down on Thursday uh one of them I'm very familiar with quarterback Sam Howell getting traded from the Washington commanders to the Seattle Seahawks but let's talk first about the other trade that happened the Atlanta Falcons are sending or have sent uh quarterback Desmond Ritter to the Arizona Cardinals for wide receiver rondale Moore so uh I guess let's start this way Lauren if you had to put your thoughts in into a sentence to how would you describe the Desmond Ritter experience for the Atlanta Falcons it it's hard to it's hard to summarize it quick quickly but it's like I kind of find out my feeling like what did you expect you know like I don't know it kind of went out I don't know that I thought Desmond Ritter was gonna come to Atlanta and absolutely light it up and so when they put him in there and Arthur Smith wasn't necessarily uh putting all of their weapons in the best position to be successful at least that was the feeling around Atlanta like they're not getting as much out of Drake London and Kyle pittz and bejan Robinson as as you would have liked like it felt like it would be an ideal situation for a Young quarterback like that and yet it still wasn't so I mean how could you expect Desmond Ritter to be able to do more there I mean certainly he wasn't he wasn't great and he made mistakes that he was a part of the problem there but also you know gets benched twice and back and forth with Taylor hinaki like I'm just kind of left feeling like yeah it's it's too bad for Ritter but like but what did you expect like this was not this didn't seem like it was it was a a clear path at that point to this working out really well for either side yeah it really kind of felt like I mean with the Atlanta Falcons just in general you mentioned it it just kind of felt like it was an organization that was just trying to do new things and almost like trying to Sherk or organic decision-making you know for for the sake of just doing it like just to be different you know what I mean we we're in the thick of mock draft season right and every once in a while you stumble upon a mock draft and you're like oh the Chicago Bears trade pick number one for three third round picks four fourth round picks and a retired running back you're like cool so this guy is just trying to shock people for the sake of shocking people and obviously that's not a real thing and if it is never read that guy's mock draft again but it just kind of felt sometime and then Arthur Smith didn't do him any favors by coming to the podium and saying I don't care about your fantasy team I don't care about your fantasy stes like dude like are you are you out here making coaching decisions because you don't like just to shake the media narrative like is that why you're making these decisions but then you pair that kind of confusion with a quarterback and Desmond Ritter and I I remember him coming out of Cincinnati I was I was a fan right of Desmond Ritter but I don't think anybody ever had him as this guy that was going to elevate everybody around him the idea was that he was going to have to have uh Talent around him to make it work and you know look Kyle pittz hasn't necessarily been exactly what everybody thought Kyle pittz was going to be uh you know Drake London certainly I think has has some Talent has some ability but like when you when you watch what Drake or what what what Desmond Ritter does well on the football field as far as a passer it doesn't really mesh too much with what Drake London does well as a receiver and then yeah the the confusing uh conversation around beon Robinson and His usage or or lack thereof certainly expect that to get better this year but what really has a lot of people confus Lauren is the draft compens or the trade compensation so Ron delale Moore and I don't want to be disrespectful to any player uh you know out there giving it their best but this guy's he's come into his fourth year uh in the league he's capped out at 54 receptions which is his rookie season he's never had more than 435 yards receiving he's at three career touchdowns which is three more than I will ever have right but when you talk about trading quarterback like we talk about premiums we talk about inflation we talk about all this stuff even when it's a quarterback that everybody knows is going to be traded we still talk about those words when you when you look at this and say the Arizona Cardinals gave up rondale more and you understand the league that the Falcons probably didn't only talk to the Cardinals so that means that this is the best that they felt they could have in a trade for Desma Ritter what does that tell you about the league and what they see in Desmond Ritter certainly not a a positive valuation there or a super complimentary one like you know Ritter was a third round pick and didn't play above that in in any way shape or form like it looked pretty obvious that he was gonna have to be a backup quarterback somewhere we just thought it might still be Atlanta and that they could keep kind of developing behind KK Kirk Cousins but I can I can see where if you're a team like the Cardinals like why not go for a higher upside type of backup quarterback and if you can you know get him for trading a number three number four type wide receiver that feels like pretty good value like I don't know you look around and M Jones got traded for a six round pick a different salary and different different structure different situation but like that ain't much and and you know Tre Lance gets a fourth round pick so I mean that that's kind of like the range here for young guy who's going to be a backup quarterback who's been a disappointment so I mean is rondale Moore worth a sixth round pick in a trade Ian probably like I mean maybe maybe more like a seventh round pick I don't know like so that that to me is like where if you start to equate the value to other trades we've seen for backup quarterbacks like it's it's a market right now of QB where there's a ton of supply and not enough demand and I know as we'll talk later that that's part of why Justin field is still a Chicago Bear right right right and you know and look it's not totally unnatural for a team to bring in a new starter like Kurt Cousins and say you know let's get the old starter the the incumbent out of the way because surely there are still Desmond Ritter fans in Atlanta and if Kurt Cousins comes out and say they go one in three or something like that and he throws a few interceptions or something there will be a contingent of the media possibly and also the fan base calling for desmar Ritter to get back in there and I think that's one of the reasons Washington commanders decided to trade Sam how which is the next conversation we're going to have Sam Hal getting traded to the Seattle Seahawks uh in exchange for a swap right so so neither team or gains or loses total draft Capital but the commanders get a third round pick and a fifth round pick from Seattle they send back a fourth and a sixth so you basically upgrade the fourth to a third upgrade the sixth to a fifth and we'll give you Sam how now Lauren the conversation here is did the Washington commanders give up on Sam too fast and did they get enough value if you look at at the traditional Jimmy Johnson Model the advantage here for Washington is 11.8 points which equates to about the number 96th overall pick which would be a third round compensatory pick is that enough for what you believe Sam Howell is and what do you think of this trade in this current quarterback Market I don't think that's a terrible sell low for for Washington there like I still think Sam Howell can be I more so I say I think the jury is still a little bit more out on Sam Howell I mean it's still out on Desmond r too but like I think Howell showed you a bit more than rder did to be like well maybe Howell can still be something at some point so like that but but I also think like that's why Seattle was willing to give up a lot more for him than what Arizona gave up for Ritter like I think it reflects like yes they're both young quarterbacks who only have like really a good solid season of starting caliber your starting uh experience out there but like one showed you a lot more than the other and so one costs a lot more as a trade candidate like in this Justin Fields conversation like at the original kind of thought price was around like a second round pick plus some change and so like if you kind of Ratchet that down a little bit to Sam Howell like a third doesn't seem too bad like I think he's a guy who could legitimately compete with Gino Smith in Seattle and push him in a real way and also if he gets injured or something happens for whatever reason if you had to turn to Sam Howell you're not screwed and you feel like you can still get something out of that and keep building him up and maybe he develops into a quarterback that's worth more than what you just gave up to get him and but for Washington much like you were saying with Ritter it's like you do got to clear the way for the next guy coming in they've got Marcus Mariota as the veteran backup as well so they're they're ready for presumably Drake mayor Jaden Daniels or whoever they end up taking with that number two pick yeah also Georgia Bulldogs Legend Jake from still on the roster there in Washington as well so some quarterbacks moving some quarterbacks not moving we'll come back to that um just food for thought the Fitzgerald Spielberger model of draft pick values for trade charts that over the cap likes to use uh evaluated the difference for Sam how as a seventh round pick so that just shows you not only the evaluation of quarterbacks and how wide spr it could be but also the valuation of draft pick value and how widespread one model's got it as a third round one model's got it as a seventh round uh at the end of the day it'll just depend on what each team does with those picks and those players there are some new players headed to new homes as well on Thursday nights into Friday we'll talk about those coming up next on today's episode of lockon NFL part lockon podcast Network your team every day this episode of lockdown NFL is brought to you by Robin Hood did you a buddy of mine who works for the New York Yankees and they're very very excited for the season to come um also excited to see what the watching commanders do but that's a different story Lauren we got different players going to different teams uh where do you want to start which which new free agent going to a new home do you want to start talking about first I think it's interesting that the Buffalo Bills let Gabe Davis go to the Jacksonville Jaguars for threeyear $39 million and then turn around and sign Curtis Samuel for what's a base threeyear 24 million dollar contract but it can be worth up to three years $30 million contract so excuse me up to up to yeah up to 2030 million yeah starts at 24 worth up to 30 uh so on a per year basis it's about $5 million year cheaper to to switch from Gabe Davis to Curtis Samuel and like that's a pretty good savings there but at the same time like I don't know how how much worth worth it is it to take the risk of bringing an outside player who I like Curtis Samuel quite a bit but like you knew what you were getting with Gabe Davis you knew his fit on the team you know how he interacted with Josh Allen and that wide receiver core like there's always a certain amount of risk when you go outside of the organization to bring in one of these guys especially someone coming from a Panthers offense where like Curtis Samuel tried his hardest but it's hard to produce when everything was hitting the fan around there too so like I don't know it's just interesting to see the bills make that shift down in price and I mean we'll see how how the change in quality is because I think you could see Curtis Samuel being just as productive as Gabe Davis if he can step in and really kick things off and hit the ground running or you know there's a chance they're leting like man wish we would have just paid a little bit more for Gabe Davis yeah you know I think you had the nail on the head they talking about like stylistically right because I don't think because Gabe Davis and Curtis Samuel you know just from from what I do know about Gabe Davis like they couldn't be more different type of receivers like Gabe Davis some of the criticism about him is he can't run a full route Tre at least not well enough and and kind of is is almost like a one trick pony right where Curtis Samuel he's got a lot of different tricks in his bag now I will tell you that he does his best work in the short and intermediate part of the offense and you know when you when you look at the Commander's offense the last few years with with Curtis Sam I mean you got to take one year out of there because he had the groin injury that kept nagging him and everything else but really about two years worth of work under two different offensive coordinators what he's always shown in that system and I think even going back to his Carolina pants days what he showed is that he's a versatile guy that needs to be able to work in space so how do you get him in space that's always going to be the question right if you you try to line him up outside and he's got some like six foot4 press man coverage you know guy with the safety on top of him to chea or whatever you're never going to get him the ball so you can work him in the back field you can work him in motion work him out of the slot and then let him work in that short intermediate area he's a screen guy stuff like that that's not Gabe Davis like you're not describing Gabe Davis so the the plan here has to be for the Buffalo Bills to shift gears and to me part of that is to protect Josh Allen right because I think that as much as you love how much he can run and how physical he is and how tough he can be at the same time you got to start also thinking about protecting your Investments and and protecting quarterbacks I just had this conversation with Corbin Smith of locked on Seahawks when we're talking about Sam how and his first you know full year starting for the Washington commanders protecting your quarterback we typically hear someone say you gotta protect your quarterback you talk about the offensive line you're blocking tight ends your third down running back that can pick up a Blitzer all that stuff but protection your quarterback also goes to SCH and you know that Lauren you watch Justin field struggle in some schemes Mitchell trabis struggle in some schemes you have to scheme to your quarterback strengths but you also have to schem to your player strengths and screen games quick passes you know vertical vertical type run plays uh you know SC I said screen passes but uh what do they call them sweeps reverses Jets you everything like all those types of little short things can help a guy like Josh Allen and honestly uh something that we were able to see the was Comm kind of take advantage of is not so much set up the screen but get your quarterback rolling outside the pocket once that linebacker safety whoever it is collapses in to stop that mobile quarterback dump it in over their head to a guy like Curtis Samuel let him do his thing yeah I I I I agree like it's it's it's all about how Buffalo is GNA be able to use these guys and how how that offense can maybe find ways to get things going differently for Josh Allen because it did feel like a lot of times last year they were still looking for answers across the board in that offense and and couldn't get anything going how about a move though or that didn't happen we we had heard that the Los Angeles Chargers were potentially shopping Joey Bosa potentially shopping khil mack one or both and one way or another both guys agreed to pay cuts there was it was restructured and also a reduction in salary for K Mack it prevents him from being franchise tagged when he's a free agent next year in 2025 and then the the Chargers added a roster bonus to Joey bosa's contract a little bit down the line but either way like they get to keep both of them for 2024 at a reduced salary cap number but both guys are already nearing the ends of their contract I mean k Mack is 33 going on 34 like I'm a little surprised they they found a way to keep both I mean I I get wanting to run it back and trying to rebuild that defense quickly but I I can't help but feel like especially the 33y old Mac like bosa's only 29 like he still got some good running him and Clack is not over is not completely washed either but you're still paying those guys what 30 plus million dollarss a year each even after the piay I think so I mean it it becomes a really challenging situation to try and figure out how to like still add players around them while keeping them at a reduced salary like it just seems like it would have been easier to kind of let one of them go you still have the other one still have the good right save that money and then use that elsewhere but instead you save a little bit here and there and try and still hold the whole thing together it's it feels like you're trying to do two things at the same time yeah it's like the Chargers are trying to peel the Band-Aid off slowly and I don't think they've ever heard the term that you just need to rip that sucker off um and I really think that they kind of looked at it what was the the cap was like 12 a half million more than everybody expected it to be something something crazy like that and I almost wonder if the charers looked at that they like oh man it's a sign it's a sign that we can keep two of these guys and we can we can make this work and you know Joey and and Khalil probably looked at that hey you know we're better together than separate and all this other stuff and you know for khil I I can kind of understand you're trading some money for some Freedom like you you're guaranteed that if you don't want to come back to Los Angeles at the end of your contract you get one more bite at the Apple potentially I I would think go ring Chase I know some people look down at that but I don't know if I were in that profession in that position I be ring chasing you can call me whatever you want I'm ring chasing um Joey Bosa to me is is the more confusing one because yeah you take a little bit of pay cut now sure there's a roster bonus but the key is for a roster bonus you gota be on the roster so you're still putting the control in the hands of the Chargers that they potentially let you go and I don't know maybe his contract down that that road is a little bit prohibitive of that as well hopefully it makes sense for both players but you are a little surprised that the Chargers went this route and and it's it's weird because you have this quarterback that you feel like puts you into a championship window you know I kind of I well I can't say kind of I understand the move of getting rid of the younger receiver versus the older Keenan Allen because of the injury and everything going on there but it just feels like the Los Angeles Chargers are really kind of just sticking themselves in this Purgatory window more than they're putting themselves in position to enter a championship window this year or even next year uh with these moves so it'll be really interesting because folks have been trying to Crown Justin Herbert in the Chargers for a long time and with Coach Harbaugh though they're going to try to crown him even harder so it'll be interesting to see how these moves pan out it does feel like Harbaugh's finger fingerprints are all over this right like Jim's not going to come in there and say get rid of these veteran butt kicking Edge rushers like no I think he wants them and wants to keep them around and sees a championship window right away say screw it like we're not gonna tear down and try and rebuild this I've got the quarterback I've got the scheme I got the coaches let's keep these Top Flight Edge rushers and you you create a little bit more space to keep adding around them but like I I think he can still see them as like let's squeeze everything we can out of them this year and then you know we can adjust as we need to but let's not tear ourselves down by Choice before we really absolutely have to and evidently this pay cut was enough for them to say I guess we don't absolutely have to absolutely well there's uh something that most people think the Bears have to absolutely do and that is trade Justin Fields when is it going to happen and given what's been going on around the quarterback trade market what is that deal going to look like we're going to ask Lauren Cox of locked on Bears coming up next on today's episode of hoops till they cut down the Nets FanDuel an official Sportsbook partner of the NFL wrapping up this Friday episode of Locked on NFL David Harrison here from locked on commanders Lauren Cox from locked on Bears filling in for Tony Wiggins of locked on Jags and uh it's pretty good timing because uh Lauren I don't know I don't know if you've heard covering the Chicago Bears but they've got a little bit of a quarterback situation everybody pretty much assumes that Caleb Williams is going to be the number one overall pick actually I messaged you on teams you never answer me back so let me let me put you on the spot here Caleb Williams number one in the lock on NFL Super mock draft Extravaganza we got going on later this month well I think people are just going have to tune in to the locked on NFL Mock Draft extravagan I know and I apologize for not being as up on my Microsoft teams messages as I probably should be F it's all good but I try to put you on the spot there and see if you just bite but gonna draft Caleb Willams and so I will too like that's yes that's how it's gonna go that's what's gonna happen so Caleb Williams is number one in the Chicago Bears which means they have to do what everybody else is already doing and get rid of the incumbent starter so you don't have massive amounts of drama and it's just it's so here's the part I want to talk to you about Lauren so Lauren for everybody obviously lockon Bears is covering the storyline Lauren was also on lockdown sports today to talk about this so lost uh you can catch it there with Ross Jackson you also talked about this earlier this week with James rine on locktown NFL so this is I mean this is one of the big stories here this is why this is getting talked about so much here's my angle on this that I that I want to get your your two cents on Ryan polls at the NFL scouting combine says was it him or the coach you can tell you you can tell me which one it was it him says we want to get this this situation fixed like tomorrow like the words tomorrow came out of his mouth I think the media around him started laughing a little bit like oh that was funny he's like no I'm serious like if we could do this tomorrow I'll do it tomorrow we want to be good to Justin all this other stuff how has the trade not happened yet because now there's there's stories or rumors coming out and again I'm an outsider so help me connect these dots to say Well they're still doing their homework on Caleb and they're still doing this and they're still doing that and that's why they haven't trading because they're not they're not their decision's not made yet and to me Lauren if you're a general manager of an NFL team and you stand up at a podium in Indianapolis and talk about how you want to rectify this situation or resolve this situation you want to do right by Justin you're telling the world you're trading this dude that decision has already been made so I'm not buying the we're still studying Caleb storyline yeah I agree I think that we're still studying Caleb storyline feels a little bit like you know Public Relation SL you know putting that out there to make you look better to make it seem like ah Field's Market wasn't that great but we weren't really that interested in trading him yet anyway like to I I definitely feel a lot of that in there like I do think if the trade offers had been what the Bears were looking for they would have traded Justin Fields by now you know if somebody had come in with and and same thing like if tomorrow if Denver calls and says all right here's a second round pick or whatever that whatever their threshold is going to be they're going to make the deal like as much as yeah I think they are still crossing their tees and doubting their eyes when it comes to Caleb Williams I I would say they're somewhere between 95 and 99.9% sure but maybe not at a 100% sure but I think they're sure enough that if the right offer was there for Justin Fields they would make the trade and say yeah we're comfortable enough enough with these quarterbacks and we'll get 100% comfortable after we have the private workout and the prod and all that stuff so it's convenient to say we are still evaluating Williams because I think that is true but they're evaluating that final 1% of of Caleb Williams and not like we're still trying to if this quarterback is good like they know whether they like this quarterback or not like they decided probably a while ago but certainly long enough ago like yes this is the guy that we want you know by now in your draft process you're either in love with him or you're not and they've clearly been planning on drafting him and clearly been planning on Justin Fields but the problem becomes your top suters for Justin Fields were Atlanta and Pittsburgh and Atlanta gets KT cousin Pittsburgh gets Russell Wilson and I think if free agency plays out differently if Kurt Cousins resigns in Minnesota and Russell Wilson goes to the Raiders or whatever Justin field might be traded by now like I think they were kind of hoping the market would play out a certain way it didn't and now I think they see their best bet as trying to play the long game now and not just try and take whatever peanuts someone's gonna offer him but now maybe wait till draft day and see does Denver miss out on the rookie quarterback they want does do the Raiders miss out do some team not get the rookie that they want and now they're all of a sudden more desperate for fields and will up their offer at the last minute to make sure they get a quarterback instead of just settling for Fields right now that's interesting that's interesting because the only the only threat and you know to whoever PR person pulled This Thread you know pretty smart I mean it's pretty much the only play you had so so kudos for taking it and seeing it but the only thread you have to pull right is that Caleb didn't do any Medicals at the combine and said you're not getting my records until I come visit you so until you they can come visit or until you come visit you can't get the quote unquote full picture and we all know the Medicals and the interviews are the most important part of the combine so we get it and to Ryan PA's defense he made all those comments before Caleb decided not to do any the Medicals right so you can you can pull those threads but I just so if if that is what they're trying to play here as soon as Caleb comes for his his visit that's over now like the very next day Justin field should be traded I mean like you look at like Marcus Mariota agreed to a deal yesterday signed today Sam how traded by lunch you know what I mean like that's that's pretty much how this like Caleb arrives Caleb visits Justin Fields traded by breakfast like you know what I mean like that's how this should go down or we should be hearing leaks about Caleb Williams you know has like an extra foot that he's been he's been hiding from teams that they don't know about um so because I look at this Lauren 2 now and like you mentioned a lot of those top suiters were expected to be there for Justin fields are now gone so who if you look across the NFL like who if there is a pre-draft day candidate to trade for just Fields realistically who do you think that might be Denver is the top option there like that's the the only team for the most part that I think they're the only team that had a quarterback vacancy that hasn't addressed it in in some way shape or form like plenty of teams have added a quarterback on a one-year deal like a Marcus Mariota or uh jacobe brassett or Drew lock to the Giants like I don't think any of those signings Prelude those teams from potentially pursuing Justin Fields but certainly Broncos are the one who they they still just have Jared stum they did not sign another quarterback to compete there I've heard throughout this process that Denver hasn't really been that interested in fields and weren't really pursuing him very aggressively through this process but if they get through draft day and JJ McCarthy doesn't make it that far or they're unable to trade up or whatever for whatever reason they don't get a quarterback that they like then all of a sudden does Justin Fields become their best option and they say well we weren't really crazy about him but he's better than anything else we can get and then they up their offer I think Denver's the top of the list and I I still can't rule out New England I mean they did sign jacobe brassette they have bayy zappy but you know with the third overall pick will they like the third best of the three quarterbacks or if if they only like Caleb and Drake May and Drake May and Caleb go one and two and then they're like well we don't want to take Jaden Daniel like would they rather use a later day three draft pick to get fields and then either draft bar Harrison or trade down from three like do they end up finding that their quarterback doesn't make it to them so Fields feels like a bad option to them and they still have brasset there in case Fields doesn't work out like those are the two teams I would say at the top of my list as far as starting gigs and then a bunch of teams might be interested in him as a backup but that that's going to be a much lower price I don't think the Bears are eager to accept they're not there yet yeah the Denver Broncos and they make the most sense off the top of my head as well they were they were a team that were rumored maybe you know be in the conversation for Sam how if he was up for up for trade which obviously he was and they were not part of that conversation as far as I'm aware of uh last question Lauren I'll let you get away from just Fields conversations for the weekend um in the in the blame game right so I get this question a lot about Sam how how much of it was Sam how how much of it was Eric bemy the Washington commanders um how much of this is Justin Fields how much of this is the Chicago Bears and the multiple coaches he's worked under when you say how much of this like how much of his lack of success or how much it's not working yeah that it's not gonna work out in Chicago sure yeah so I think it's undeniable that Justin Fields was put into a bad situation right I mean came into a team with a lame duck head coach spent his whole rookie the whole rookie offseason working as a backup never really getting time with the starters then after three or four games thrown in with the starters after having never worked with them like messy first year then year two new head coach they tear everything down he's got no receivers no offensive line no defense so messy year two and then finally year three things start to get going then he gets hurt during year three and so like a lot of things have not been Justin Field's fault but that doesn't mean it's zero% Justin Field's fault like we have seen quarterbacks play better in those bad situations than fields did in those bad situations now but at the same time like it's it would have taken a really like miraculous type of quarterback play to really overcome all of that but I think he could have done more and hasn't made as much progress as you would have liked him to see so like it's hard to put a number on it you know is it 70% Bears 30% Fields is it 6040 I wouldn't go above like 8020 maybe it's in that kind of range but I think it's definitely more bears than Fields but it's not 100% Bears Fields Fields is culpable for some of this but it was largely a really tough situation for him for way too long certainly all right good stuff from Lauren Cox host of lock on Bears you want more Justin Fields talk you know where to find him plus probably back here at some point in time if this thing continues he'll be back here to talk about that if it doesn't continue he'll be back to talk about the trade coming up on Monday he might be here talking with Kevin ostriker lock on Ravens talk about the trade that happened on Sunday if that happens we'll be back uh with locked on NFL so make sure you're subscribed have the notifications turned on or your auto
