Is Jim Harbaugh Right About Joey Bosa?

Jim Harbaugh On Joey Bosa couple weeks ago Jim Harbaugh said something in an interview that really surprised me Joey yeah Joey is Joey was having a better year than khil uh you know through that stretch until till he get got hurt I tell you guys really thrilled Jesse Min so I decided to go back and watch every single play from Joey Bosa this past season just to see if what Jim Harbaugh is saying is true so make sure to like And subscribe if you do enjoy this content bro it helps me out so much and let's start off with a breakdown of Joey Bosa this last year Joey Bosa - The Good Stuff let's just go ahead and start off with the positives all right Joey Bosa is freaking Relentless in his pursuit of the quarterback and also in pursuing Runners from the backside of the line of scrimmage for the most part there were a couple plays where he wasn't but he was very good at doing that from the backside as well he also is really great at holding off the weak side in case of a cut back from the runner and often times that forced the running back to not be able to cut back towards his side and they got tackled between the tackles and that was something that was really important in the Improvement of this run defense this last year it's plays like that that don't show up on the stat sheet but he did it routinely and it helped out that overall run defense a lot and we all know how great Joey Bose's hands are and how many pass rushing moves that he has that bll Rush the rip move the club the stab the speed on the outside and then just swatting the offensive tackles arms down he did every single one of those moves at a high level and it was rare that I saw him lose a rep in a pure pass rush situation he was always getting a pressure or was about a half second away from getting a pressure but he rarely ever just flat out lost a rep where he was trying to rush the passer and that honestly surprised me I mean there were times that he did lose reps like in the Cowboys game against Tyron Smith but it was really rare to see him just flat out get beat he ATT Tred Ed a lot of attention in the run and the pass game and that honestly surprised me too I mean it just seems like most teams respected the threat of Joey Bosa more than the threat of khil Mack and specifically in the Run game because they would either run away from him or double team him with a tight end and an offensive tackle and then when tight ends came towards him and tried to block him in the running game so like a tight end in motion and they try to get a crack block right on him he did a good job of stacking those guys up and then disengaging when the runner got close to Joey Bosa - Negatives him now let's get to the negatives and the biggest negative that I have for him honestly it's his balance and when he would lose on those pass rushing reps it was typically because he would just slip and he would slip in the Run game too there were so many times that he would just fall down and that's why he would lose a rep it wasn't like the offensive tackle just you know stuck him up or anything he just slip and often times it was at Sofi Stadium that's the Chargers home field he was on the ground a lot and that's kind of because of how Reckless he plays which is both you know part of a positive of his game and it's a negative to his game he's going to slip he's going to be falling down a ton another negative to his game is when he was asked to do a stunt move and Rush towards the inside of the line of scrimmage really anytime he was rushing towards the inside he would mostly just get caught up in traffic and just be in that Log Jam but also other times he would lose his balance and fall down and there were some times that he won on the inside but it was not nearly as often as the times that he would just be falling down or getting caught in traffic another thing is when he used speed on the outside from like a really wide nine stance sometimes he would lose that pass rushing Lane integrity and the quarterback they're just able to scramble out towards his side and extend the play and when he did that he still chased the quarterback from behind which you know goes to show his high motor and relentlessness but you would like to see him maintain that pass rush Lane Integrity so that the quarterback can't extend the play there was also a couple times where a tight end or running back would dive at his legs and that was honestly like his biggest obstacle to the quarterback that was the only thing that would slow him down now I'm going to break down a couple plays of his pass rush and his run defense so you can get a good idea of what I'm talking about Joey Bosa Playing Run Well here's a really good example of Joey Bosa taking on a tight end in the Run game and he plays this really well you can see Derwin James is coming off of this side on the blitz and that's going to affect Joey's path towards the running back you can see Derwin James is on the outside so does this little hop step towards the inside right there and now he's going to engage with the tight end Durham Smite but Derwin James should get this tackle in the backfield but he whiffs on the tackle Joey Bosa does a nice job stacking up that tight end not giving away any yardage and then he's getting on the outside he's got that outside arm free that's why the runner goes back towards the inside and also Kenneth Murray the inside freaking linebacker for whatever reason he's committing towards the outside opens up the lane for the runner on the inside but Joey Bosa did about as well as you could right there for an outside linebacker and you can see he's a little bit upset because he knows he did his job now we're going Setting up CB blitz well to see on this play Joey Bosa setting up his teammate jir Taylor perfectly on the blitz you can see he does this little step right here and then he goes towards the inside with that little jab step engages with the tackle doesn't let go creates that free rushing Lane for jir Taylor right towards the quarterback and that forces the quick and errant pass by Tua Tong of vioa really good job by both Bosa and jir Taylor now look at this Inside Move vs Chiefs beautiful pass rush rep against the Chiefs he's right here just going to do this long step right there and then a little quick jab another jab towards the inside and then watch these hands now get that outside arm of the tackle and you swim over it with that other arm you push him back behind you and now you have a clear pathway if the running back wasn't here but he is and then you just run right through the running back he was even off balance on this play gets the hit on Patrick Mahomes forces the bad throw I mean that that's just absolutely Relentless pure Joey Bosa right there now here is a great long arm Long Arm vs Jets rep by Joey Bosa he's right here on the right side of the screen check out his footwork first some long steps right there this one and then this one specifically is going to plant him and now he's going to establish that long arm into the chest of the the right tackle right here and then look at his head look at his back he's just going to lean all the way in and push with all of that leverage and he's just got so much power just pushes the right tackle all the way into the quarterback that dude had no shot that is just really a beautiful pass rush by Joey now here is Joey Bosa slips vs Dolphins a good example of that move not working out here's Joey Bosa right here working on this right tackle in the Miami game look at his footwork because you can see when he engages this time it's not the outside foot does it with this inside foot and I want you to see as soon as he engages with his tackle look at how this foot slips on the turf right there you see that little slippage he's not able to get as much Leverage and as much power into that offensive lineman as he wants to with this long arm and it allows this lineman to take that left hand and just get that arm right off of him and push him down boom pancake little slip can be a big loss for a guy like Joey Bosa so Joey Bosa definitely Joey Bosa Full Breakdown did play well this last year don't know if I would say he was better than khil Mack but here's my overview all right Joey Bosa he only played in nine games last year against the Packers he only played Four snaps and then against the Titans he only played 19 snaps so really it was only like seven games his health it has been an issue his entire career and he's 29 years old now and with an out on his contract after this year this is going to be a Prov It season for him to not only stay healthy but maintain the high levels of play that he had at a consistent level Joey Bosa also is the highest paid charger next year he he's got the biggest cap hit and the Chargers could save $4 million by cutting or trading him after this season if he plays well then he's going to stay on this team and he's going to be worth that $25 million salary next year which would be the last year of his contract by the way but if he doesn't play well then it wouldn't be worth seeing that contract through because he would be a 30-year-old pass rusher with health issues that is about to get a $10 million pay increase in 2025 out of all of the players on the Chargers roster right now I think Joey Bosa has the most to prove and he has the talent to on this roster long term is just about the health and also the flags and the personality issues that have flared up recently I think with this new culture that Jim Harbaugh and Ben Herbert are creating Joey Bosa isn't going to be throwing his helmet on the sideline and things like that because teams that play Under Jim Harbaugh typically they are well disciplined and they don't get out of character like you know for the most part the issue with mistiming the snap though that Joey Bosa has and getting penalized for that it it's something that I think can be coached out of him but there are going to be times where he just miss times the snap because he's trying to get downfield so quickly and he's just such an explosive pass rusher that you might just have to live with a few of those every single season because nobody's going to be batting a thousand whether or not we agree with Jim Harbaugh that Joey Bosa was playing better than khil Mack this past season I'm sure we can all agree that we cannot wait to see both of these guys in Jim Harbaugh and Jesse mentor's defense and if you did not see my video
