The Chargers Have A UDFA Flashing in Training Camp

Chargers Training Camp News and Highlights the Chargers were in pads today for the second day in a row but also leanian Tomlinson yes leanian Tomlinson was out at practice today talking to all of the guys hopefully hyping them up so that they can have a better career and you know giving them a good mindset things like that Hey listen Quinton Johnson you need to listen to LT when it comes to mindset and things like that because you know I'm just saying okay but we also had some really good news coming out of practice some bad news as well we have some stuff that we need to watch in terms of clips and also some things to go over from yesterday because there is some news from yesterday that we didn't get to now the defense they won the day DL, EDGE beating the OL in the first day of pads as both khil Mack and Joey Bosa had some good days we saw Joey Bosa get that sack yesterday on uh Joe Al when Joe Al was playing right tackle and I couldn't help but notice that the defense seemed to be getting a lot of sacks on this offensive line in both the starters and the backups in both of their reps like I know that we got some really good Edge rushers right with a lot of depth but I just hope this isn't an indication that the offensive line is struggling and they need to be better in pass protection you know I know this dline room and and the edge group has been been getting a lot of Praise from the coaches but uh yeah the offensive line I'd like to see him protect Justin Herbert but we're still extremely early on it's only been 2 Days in pad so it's nothing to freak out about obvious obviously but it's going to be a process too right like getting these guys up to speed and then building up this offensive line to become a dominant unit it's not going to be like a turnover that we see happen over the course of one off season I understand that and we know how bad this offensive line unit was just this past season and you know it's just something that I noticed that the defensive line and the edge group seems to have the edge over the offensive line pretty early on in training camp but one player that has Tyler McLellan Stands Out in Pads! flashed According to Jim Harbaugh once the pads got on it was Tyler mlen the udfa from cample guys really stood out I had a young guy that really stood out in my mind I mean Tyler mlen I mean yeah where' it go Tyler you know uh two two really good reps that he had now Tyler mclen is a 6'8 350lb dude so he's got great size for that position and he was a much better run blocker last year than he was as a pass blocker now he is a merer but he has had a couple injuries in his career and he is also inconsistent in his pass protection because he has some games where he allows zero pressures and then some games where he has multiple pressures allowed so he can be a bit streaky in pass protection but at least he has potential and actually his PFF grades were pretty good 86.5 run blocking grades 72.4 pass blocking H you know and then 83 overall offensive grade but uh yeah he had five games with no pressures allowed and then four games where he had multiple pressures allowed so there's that streakiness coming in into play I think I it'd be tough for him to make the final 53 right now like he would have to string together a lot of really good practices and some good preseason game action but I could totally see him make this practice squad and then develop into a swing tackle for us later on like a couple years down the road but speaking of a swing tackle Mari Jamaree Salyer Injury sawer this happened like 10 minutes ago from the point that I'm recording this video right now he just went down on the field today went into the facility with the trainers like I hope that they sent Jamari saer straight to Ben Herbert in that wait room to try to figure out what's going on because now what are we going to do if some of these guys actually start missing time due to injury like ran Slater he was held out of practice today and yeah he's fine okay there's nothing to worry about too much with him but but still I'd rather him be fully healthy than sitting out of a practice due to precaution of aggravating something that he's working through you know what I mean and if Jamari sawer Now is working through something as well then that shakes up this offensive line even more like Jamari has always been that next man up in case of an injury to any starting offensive line players but now the next man up might be injured so this offensive line depth might be tested early on in the season and I really hope that jamar's injury is just like ran Slater it's nothing serious but again I will say this I would rather these guys not be going down at all than to be going down with a minor injury that they can play through so even if it's nothing serious I it still worries me it's not Josh Palmer Touchdown good now let's get into the training camp clips from today and this one is from Chargers country all of these clips actually are from Chargers country he went to training camp today this dude was a legend getting all of these clips so thank you so much follow him on Twitter by the way but this is just going to be a Justin Herbert throw Deep Over the middle to Joshua Palmer who was wide open in the middle of the field but let me break this down because there's some offensive line play that maybe you saw but check right here this is Joe Al playing left tackle yeah ran Slater he's sitting out right now but Joey Bosa right here on this far left side can you even see him here right here Joey Bosa so just watch these two guys because they are going to be going at it Joey Bosa getting a bull rush right here boom smack right into that chest and then Joe Al trying to Anchor but Joey is so freaking strong with that bll Rush that he sends him to the ground listen Joe Al he is a rookie and uh he anchored pretty well here as you can see right there boom that establishing step and then this other step coming in getting that wide base and he's everything here is perfect but Joey Bosa just forklifting that ginormous human being it is extremely impressive and I I think Joey Bosa if he keeps playing like this he might have a really good year but then I want you to see the Personnel out here Tuli tuy pelu on this inside right here Joey Bosa we got Denzel Perman back there and then this defensive lineman is Puna Ford and khil Mack so we got three of our best Ed rushers out here yet again and I think this is Trey pipkins at right tackle I think this might be a sack if this is a real speed because as you can see K Max spinning away right there and then boom stepping up looks like he just kind of lets up I think that would have been a sack but either way big play to Josh Palmer now we got this one again from Isaiah Spiller Touchdown Chargers country on Twitter uh this is just kind of the backups plan in the Red Zone they're at like the two or three yard line before they get into the end zone just going to hand the ball off to isaia Spiller and boom you can see right there just kind of working through traffic gets his way into the end zone not much to break down here because this is just kind of a bunch of backup so I understand it's not too exciting but there some offensive line play I want to show you this is Willis Patrick the ud udfa from uh TCU and then right here at left tackle is Foster cell they're both going to do a nice job of collapsing this play into the center of the field try to get all that traffic just jammed up boom right there Chris Hinton he's just going to get washed by Foster cell all the way to the center of the field but also now I want you to keep an eye on some not very good blocking because this right here is Stone smart getting some action with like the third team offense but he's been playing in the first team as well playing pretty well in practice as a tight end getting some catches but just kind of gets thrown around and worked by Tai Shelby the outside linebacker so if he's going to want to make this team he's going to need to improve his blocking skills we were talking about that uh during OTAs and things like that but not a good sign by uh Stone smart right here to get thrown around uh blocking where is he right here blocking Tai Shelby just getting thrown around in the Red Zone like that yeah that could cost you okay now we got this one again from Chargers Quentin Johnston Catch country on Twitter this is uh one of those plays where you know we'll see what you have to say about it boom right there Quinton Johnson gets that catch turns up field getting the touchdown right because it's not up to speed really he would have been tackled way before that but okay let's break this down because we got let's first start off with the offensive line play this is Trey pipkins and Joe Al right there Morgan Fox and khil Mack they're giving them that look of that stunt move right because we want to get that communication down this guy the inside guy is going to just crash into the tackle and then CLE ma is going to go towards the inside needs to be picked up but look at Joe all right here because this is actually not very good from him he's going to keep his eyes on KAC The Edge rusher and then boom Morgan Fox crashes into him you can see how he just kind of loses balance right there and boom just kind of gets pushed back watch him cuz it's is going to go real speed here so watch Joel right here just how he gets boom pushed back by Morgan Fox yeah that's kind of a loss for him on that rep but he's a rookie he's going to be learning I have full confidence in him so let's go into Quinton Johnston now because I don't have full confidence in him although I really want him to succeed good break on that right uh route right there to go right towards the outside on a little 5 yard out boom he has you know he's open because this is Zone and then he gets that ball boom right there anybody notice anything about how he's catching that does anybody notice it uh I'm sure a lot of people do boom he's catching it with his body he's letting it come into him you don't want to let those balls come inside of you like that you want to just go out and reach for him with your hands I'm just now realizing what I said but listen Quinton Johnson he needs to attack the ball with his hands go out and get it not let the ball come into him and absorb that catch like a body catch like that it it's just we're seeing some of the same things that we've been seeing from him in that rookie year and it's starting to feel like ah you know what's really going on we're going to have to wait until he gets on the field to see how he has DJ Chark Chunk Play actually progressed now we got just kind of like a quick pass right here I'm not going to go over a huge breakdown because there's not really much to see cuz the guys are in the way but over the middle to DJ CH one thing I do want to point out I I think earlier in the video I said rashan Slater wasn't playing in practice today but he actually is he's out there right there for this rep um am I blocking him you can see hold on let me move the freaking camera here because this is ran Slater right here boom that's him playing left tackle so he was actually just uh limited again today so JK Dobbins, Poona Ford, Otito Ogbonnia that's good that he is out there okay now this is the last one I want to show you guys just going to be a handoff so not really a ton of uh you know stuff to break down here because it's not full go and it's just a handoff but we are in pads so I think it's notable that Puna Ford right here the defensive tackle is doing work against that double team look at how low he gets he throws Bradley Boseman and is giv Zion Johnson the business taking up both of those guys freeing up space for Denzel Perman shooting that Gap if he needs to but he doesn't Scott Matlock is uh putting in work right there I think against ran Slater he's getting blocked you know obviously and then that's like one or two yard gain you can't tell because of the depth reception but my goodness Puna Ford that gets me excited that shows me like okay this defensive line and look at otito Bona too actually right here otito Bona not number 93 in front of Deon Henley boom right there look at how he does against Trey pipkins just kind of just placing him like that oh my gosh just look at both of those guys going to work Scott madlock didn't do too bad not really giving up ground but he is getting blocked by ran Slater who is a franchise left tackle defense won that rep man and that defensive line it looked really good right there so that is everything that you need to know
