with that Jet Sweep away from it selling that they were going to run to the strength more than four players in the back field that penalty declined second down so a little tricker ation got him that time they weren't they didn't quite line it up right they got a quick first down has not been ideal tonight for Duke yeah both teams really but you know you want to be on first down four yards or more uh in the high 60% and they're not anywhere close to that right now and that's that's that's a strain on the offense second and 15 and that pass is picked off there's Caleb Cur he had a pick six last interception tonight one touchdown he's had some big balls that were near misses he has and um and as they clean that up and he connects on those this this would be a different game right now and and I suspect will be as they move forward you see the Eline Defenders right now you got guys with their hands on their hips right now I think they're really starting to feel the effects of not as much depth against this Tempo offense right now they're getting tired and Duke isn't nearly running at the tempo that they were earlier in this game they kind of taking their foot off the gas as the game is worn on as P Jes get the hand out there third down yeah well you know maybe their their mindset right now is take a little more time off the clock job that's going to be penalty flag that didn't their schedule Clay is very I think very favorable and and gives them a great opportunity here to gain some confidence and some momentum early in the season starting to see the chemistry as this game wears on come together too so many new people here in the program and as pkle makes the catch we haven't seen him since that big catch that set up the touchdown of the first half and he has to feel great being a part of this [Music] offense just once again that's another RPO a run pass option play where he pulled it out of the out of the uh hands of the back and he he hit the slant route outside think about these receivers Hain Jordan Moore he I hanle Nikki Del mool at the tight end Quan Brown who's very quick this is a deep deep position group of pass catchers that Jonathan Brewer has in his stable he does wrapped up it'll be second down and goal there's I I I like their skill and uh and I think their scheme matches their skill and I tell you what I do like I like the fact that John Brewer he's in this offense though he's got some some 12 Personnel he's got some tight end Wing formations that they want to run the ball behind so I think it's a it's a nice mix of of vertical passing game and uh and some hard hard downhill runs as well there's Jonathan Brewer he's got a little M he's got a little Lashley he's got a little Sunny dkes start Thomas hops to the outside he's wrapped up it'll be third down and goal to go for Duke as they try to punch another one in here late Ethan Grace Dylan Tucker combining on the stop meanwhile Elon they're going to be back here in the city of Durham next week we've got another game in this town at NC Central that game's going to be on ESPN plus and I I Tony trani they're not going to win this game but got some offensive weapons obviously Bray boy he's talent and I think their quarterbacks tough and I think their team such an agree that was a strike Corner The End Zone Eli makes the ground so Murphy just throws a to the blue paint and dke good protection here you know good throw good catch and good confidence Builder here for Murphy um building building that consistency and confidence as game goes on and trying to even out some of those long ball throws that were a little bit of Target 26 to nothing as duke goes 10 plays 63 yds and 545 pkle his first game in 611 days and that touchdown got to feel good for the man from Pendleton Indiana season off to a good start here for Duke in the Manny Diaz era Manny 50 years old second time as a head coach in the ACC of course had those three years at Miami there were some good moments there were some bad moments you I think it there are a lot of people that would say maybe they could have stuck with him another year or so because yeah he's a good coach no doubt about it especially at defensive mind and the way the defense has played here tonight outstanding 15 tackles for loss the most for Duke since 2007 he's a heck of a football coach he did a great job at Miami and yes they probably should have gave him a little more time but he's got another chance here and he is going to do great things here at Duke I really believe that so you've been a head coach you had stops at Temple Boston College Colorado state after the first game of the season any season what's what's the most important thing that you have to do when you go into talk to your players we'll have time next to watch the film and we'll we'll keep growing on the things we have to improve on but you want them to feel good about the work they got through preseason camp and be honest just just be positive honest is what I would say like one of my takeaways I think they need to run the ball just a little bit more consistently at the end they got some good runs but through the B Belly of the game they could do a little better there but I like I like the makings of this offense and I really like what he's doing right now with this football program new quarterback in for Elon Matthew Downing is out Jack salapek transfer from Western Michigan in there at the controls now this is ran Baker gets away gets into plus territory across the 50 yd line yeah and Malik Murphy you know a lot of hype around this guy coming into Durham no doubt a big armed Talent wants to work a little bit on the accuracy no doubt I think so you know I think just a little bit more on on the touch and the tempo of his throws but you can see he has a big arm but again he hasn't played a lot of football and so this is every every game every week is is going to he's going to grow and and and what you'll see in the next three weeks hopefully is tremendous development out of out of your quarterback in Mal Murphy I'm sure Manny and his staff will talk about that [Applause] there's Malik Murphy as we get to the two-minute timeout there are the numbers for Malik almost 300 yd passing a career high we step aside and Durham [Music] Tommy John is for men who value themselves makes him one of the elite defensive coaches in in America the last two years as Penn State's defensive coordinator said it was going to take the right job to leave Happy Valley and very happy with taking over here [Music] good will Langford former quarterback who they're trying to turn into a wide receiver gets it inside the 35 yd line Elon trying to get on the board here and avoid a shut out final couple minutes I hope Manny I hope Duke enjoys this win uh all wins are hard to get you got to be able to enjoy the wins I used to tell my teams all the time hey half the country will wake up on Monday are going to be 0 and one and half are going to be 1 and0 and right now we're going to be one of the ones that's one and us it's a good place to be it's a good place to be don't ever don't ever feel of anything when you win like don't Embrace embrace it you can always correct the mistakes you know you can always attack all the things you need to work on but getting a win in college football it's not easy just ask senior but salapek has picked up on this Elon offense quickly and they they really trust him so giving him some valuable reps here against an FBS opponent that should come in handy later in the year Duke you know Duke getting some guys an opportunity to get some reps here looks likeed about his defense's effort tonight was the defensive coordinator of Texas State last year the Bobcats get to the
