hello and welcome thanks for joining us a great night for baseball ahead on the show it's the Kansas City Royals taking on the New York Yankees along with my partner Chris Singleton I'm John shami Chris one guy having a big year for this club leading the team at home runs and runs bed in wants Soo yeah boo he's one of the pillars of this lineup and when you have a guy like that that's so consistent and so productive you want to make sure you can do whatever you can to get him to the plate get him as many at bats as you can in a ball game if you do that you got a really good chance of scoring a lot of runs just about ready to roll here our starter in this one Marcus strowman singing he's managed to rack up a lot of innings on the bound this season and Bo this guy's getting close to 200 on the year you know there's some Milestones that pitchers go after one of them 20 wins but another one that we don't talk about a whole lot is that 200 inning threshold to be able to surpass that says that hey they prepared themselves for the season they were able to stay healthy and they were able to pitch effectively enough to stay in ball games long enough to reach that number pretty impressive on what he's done and it's not over yet and here it comes that one fouled [Applause] [Music] off o and two now and downstairs swing and that ball smashed on a line Dominguez makes the grab and is's one down and here now the lineup for the Royals not a team that usually sees a lot of pitches or Works a ton of walks Chris they take a more aggressive approach than some of the other teams in the league they definitely have a few free swingers in this lineup you know guys who want to be on the attack and that's great as long as you got pitches in the zone but if the pitcher able to expand the Zone can be very difficult for an offense like this to get going you've got to somehow draw some walks put some Runners on base so that when you do have those free swingers come up you can cash in with some runs that are plated and the pitch and a foul ball one out base is [Applause] empty yeah with two strikes here you really want to miss outside the The Zone with that breaking ball here's the 02 bounced to the right side he steps on the bag two quick outs at the top of the first here tonight the Bobby here's Bobby Whit Jr he won the high school Home Run Derby in 2018 they held the events between rounds during MLB's Home Run Derby at Nationals Park such a cool experience for Bobby Whit Jr he had homers in 76 seconds hitting in front of Major Leaguers and 43,000 plus fans inside the stadium man my adrenaline would have been pumping in that moment two out Bas is [Applause] empty righty delivers and that's outside and that's ball three [Applause] and a swing and a miss there good late sink on that fast out of the hand looks so good and then when the time gets in The Hitting Zone hard to get the barrel to it and a foul ball he stays alive [Applause] swings and misses struck him out Royals bats are quiet there and now the Yankees will see what they can do no score you're watching Yankees baseball on the show NYC back at Yankee Stadium and out the hill in this one Brady singer and Chris he's a guy that gets better when things get tough yes batting average against is actually better he's in a jam so we'll see if he continues to dance his way out of danger and now here is GL Torres pitch and a strike to [Applause] [Applause] gaver the pitch good eye right there [Applause] outside low and that's ball [Applause] two and a curve is down an in first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no Panic at all by The Hitter very patient and showing good discipline now he's in the driver seat with the one count Andy di 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it you know Bo it's been said these guys are savages in the Box you can see it right there with such tight plate discipline here's juo right now the leading RBI man in the American League he's been huge this season and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter [Applause] the1 that's down and [Applause] in wouldn't chase that time that one almost got him Torres gets his lead at first nobody out check on the runner Torres Dives back and they got him I don't know if he was looking to go right there or not but he was clearly fooled by the pickoff move quick feed quick release over there by the pitcher really quick tag as well there's a swing and a drrive and that one is out of here another one in his incredible season it's one nothing that adds another game to his hitting streak Chris yeah he's been doing so many things well with the plate and clearly driving the ball with some Authority as part of that he's really dangerous with the bat in his hands right now well he almost robbed the home run right there and I tell you what he'd love another crack at it during batting practice you always like to work on that and so close but that one was just out of his reach one down here comes Aaron judge that one misses and it's w to know [Applause] and the pitch swing and a miss and one and one one run across in the frame so far here in the second game of the series and that's downstairs and [Applause] outside swing and a miss well when those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good good pitcher will play off of that he's got to get a better pitch to hit up the middle and that one finds its way through so a man aboard now with one away I don't think that pitch would have been called a strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock and next for New York Austin Wells first pitch [Applause] misses leftand batter weights on the ground to short could be two quick feed to Second for one and that's two another look at the long ball for the Yankees it's now a one nothing ball game back in the Bronx all set for the start of the inning now it's the DH Nelson Velasquez and there's a foul ball strowman a former Allstar he features a sinker a slur a cutter a splitter and he works in a slider and he grounds one to the right side Torres has handles throws to First and a quick out number one that here's the catcher Freddy fine this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate Good Game caller good at framing but it's that big arm that really stands out and that one is lifted in the air stto right there to make the grab that's out number two that Hunter rro at the plate hunter [Applause] rro gets him to chase after that [Applause] one and right back to the mound tosses to First and that is the back KC down in order and it remains one nothing back at Yankee Stadium and now it's John Carlos Stanton the designated hitter [Applause] joh singer back to work hard hit left side whips it across one up one [Applause] down Fatt the third Bas and up next for New York Jazz jizm Jr you know boo Jazz joined the ranks of sh Otani Fernando tatis Jr and other young stars in baseball when he was named the cover athlete of MLB the Show in 2023 says he always wanted to be on the cover of a video game but never expected it to happen so quickly the W to kick the pitch well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there couldn't pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch you'll see in this at bat to hit one down base is empty and it's fouled away [Applause] righty to the plate and that skips into dirt ripped to Third on to First already two out here in the home half of inning number two Jason two outs Bas is empty Jason Dominguez getting ready to hit three hits last night so he was a big factor in getting that win swings and misses that's strike one [Applause] there's a swing in a Miss aead 02 in the count sure you've got four pitches you can work with but throw something you can command and get this at bat over with as quickly as [Applause] possible pcks and misses it's a strike out down in order go to Yankees but they're on top one- nothing back here in New York here's Adam Frasier the second Adam strowman back to work and here's the [Applause] strike swinging a miss and it's 0 two this guy at the dish excels in two strike counts got to be careful with them out there on the m and down on strikes he goes lead off hitter gone in the third well he made pretty quick work of him right there you look at the sequence everything down at the knees and below and some guys are good mobile hits but right there they clearly had a plan to pound that part of the zone and he wasn't able to put up much of a fight Drew Waters stands in swings through that one the Royals down by a run we're here in the top half of inning number three swings through that one for strike two this guy's sink has so much drop at it it's almost like a split finger fast ball instead of just weak contacting balls on the ground he swings and misses got him and two away now well that's the effect of the splitter that you're looking for on the mound really nice pitch right there and had him out of butut over the top I'm sure was thinking he was getting something else perhaps fast ball a little more straight and Below to it Carson Rocka for in the Box here lets that one go for a [Applause] ball next offering is down low he's been raking in recent games and a big reason why getting ahead and counts he's been able to do that consistently and you see the results and a big going in a miss the Royals trailing by a run here in the second game of the series that's down and in a slider missed good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with you're better off taking that pitch and a swing in Miss he has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that's down that's one of his money pitches to get that swing Miss foul we'll see another payoff pitch two outs and a swing and a miss and that's [Applause] that impeccable command in that one three batters three strikeouts that's electric stuff out there on the mound back for more from the bronts ready to go for the last half of the inning Anthony Rizzo steps to the pl [Applause] Rizo and a pitch that's in there strike one [Applause] check swing he went too far and it's a [Applause] strike got him swinging he chased the change up and there's one away oh not sure what he was waiting on right there he got the change up and still you rarely see that it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up I mean if you can't catch up to the off spe stuff there's no way you're going to touch a fast ball and now Anthony vulpi right through there for a strike and now the o one fought off foul one down base is empty slider misses outside way inside gets out of the [Applause] way the pitch still two and two after the foul ball [Music] ball Dives and he can't hang on no throw and he reaches safely well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws Gaber Torres up to hit first pitch and he just misses vulpi over at first with one [Applause] away here goes the runner pitches low save it's second and he easily steals the bag really nice swipe of second right there and he knew he had to get a really good jump on the pitcher cuz that catcher can make up some time and such a good catch throw guy behind the dish nice job right there but he just beat it two and0 to count here it comes good take by [Music] Torres that one is inside ball four and I mean oh so close oh you know this guy wants to swing it but he's showing some good patience in this one it's the second time he's taken [Applause] stto in the box now no ball's in a strike really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count he's going to have to continue finish off this [Applause] hitter that one's in there and the count is 0 and two wow just a beautiful back door slider right there you got any chance of hitting that pit you have to wait till the absolutely last middle and that one gets really complete so on the wild pitch two guys Advance with two on and one out you're just hoping you can get a double play ball to get yourself out of the in but now you really got some work to do need a big strike out here and there's a ball recognize that change up right out of the hand just spit on it this one smoked out to left Isbell makes the play Runner tags from third he's in on the sacrifice fly it's two nothing that wasn't your standard Sapp fly he bured that baseball just couldn't get it to drop in it's Aaron judge now this is B right here who really produces in these night games and we saw the latest example of it in his first a [Music] line drive and that's base hit on at the center field Torres around third he'll score easily and they're up by three well thly he was ready to hit right there recognized the break on that pitch early and that allowed him to keep his front shoulder in you know it's easy to bail on those front door breaking balls but a great job right there letting it travel then unloading a nice balanced swing so now the Yankees cleanup hitter Austin [Applause] Wells shoots a line drive single into Right Center judge around Sapp and that'll put Runners at the corners with two away couple of singles back to back that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay so two down John Carlos Stanton stepping in now for the Yankees that's out to center field settles underneath it brings it in for the third out so two runs three hits no errors but two are left stranded on to inning number four Yankees three and the Royals nothing and we're back as we go to the top of the fourth now here's the lead off hitter for the Royals number 11 the of the pitch and there's a rocket into the Outfield now he turns and heads for second in there safely went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle ripped that one down the line and kept it fair and even when you hit it that far out front you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don't hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory and that right there was perfect and now Kyle Isbell Miss is just off the outside edge I think that was a strike well here's a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that lead off hit and part the order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get going late swing fouled to the [Applause] left man it's second and he swings through that one got swinging not what you're looking for after the lead off double a strike out and there's one away now it's the short stop Bobby Whit Jr he struck out swinging in his first INB sigy he's got a history of coming through into big spots I know I like to talk about I'm not sure whether clutch actually exists but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots the Yanks leading by three top half of inning number four next off bring is in for a strike well I think it's the ability to assess the situation understanding what the pitcher has what he's trying to get people out on and then being able to use the entire field next pitch is outside if you're a guy that can only hit to one field then you're really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust but because he's able to use the entire field that's why he's so successful in these situations so backto back strikeouts now and they still haven't managed to do anything with the lead off double yeah Bo you just don't want to get careless here if you've done a really good job to get two outs after that lead off doubled as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it's a [Applause] non-issue two outs and one in scoring position [Applause] gets a piece and it stays on and two rander kicks deals that's off the mark and the count is one and two when you played did you play with guys that you thought were clutch and sort of what were the attributes you said that's what he possesses it allows him to come from now that strike three and the third out so we take a break so one left for Kansas City they Trail it here three nothing and welcome back to the now the third basan Jazz chis J J the line of the pitch sneak through base head and the lead off man aboard waste no time there pretty tough for the infielders to do anything with that one he pulled it hard into the Outfield and even when you keep it on the ground it feels great when you hit a missile like that man at first Jason Dominguez stepping in runner takes off strike in there throw save that's a stolen base you know having a good lead is so key when you're stealing BAS even if you've got great speed but if you don't have great speed but can get an extended lead and a good jump you can steal bases on a catcher who can really throw it that's a nice job right there that one down the line and foul [Music] [Applause] ball not even close there and that's ball one chisel leads off second with nobody out Whit throw pulls him off the bag and he's safe that's a play you expect your short stop to make pretty much every time pretty routine hard to tell if he didn't get a great on that or the mechanics on him just broke down but that gives this offense an extra out to work with and he here is Anthony Rizzo struck out swinging his first time singer Bros over and he's back [Applause] safely and a curb misses outside [Music] [Applause] pitch double steel pitch misses throw to Third and he's out and the righty fields and another ball he's been trying to tease the Zone with that slider but these hitters have showed patience not going outside to strike so and that one hammered that's back and it's off the wall the Run comes in from second and it's B nothing not in time he's safe it's a run on the board and picks up an RBI put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left didn't quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence but you're never going to be disappointed with extra bases one out runner at second and now the short stop Anthony vulpi reached on an infield single this first time swinging a foul straight back and the right-hander deals swing and a miss to see was late mov to Second and he's back in safely one out and a runner at second and a pitch foul ball it stays nothing in two kicks andos squirts away a little bit and an excellent job keeping it right [Applause] there kicks and fires pitch misses there two and [Applause] two set down on strikes not sure about that call pitcher might have gotten a friendly strike three no definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the dug out know those are tough ones to let go as a hitter but with the human umpire calling balls and Strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes so the batting order turns over here comes glaber Torres a swing and a miss and that's strike one runner at second two down we're here in the bottom of the [Applause] four in the air out to Center coming on makes the grab tracks it down after the long run and that is that Yankee strike for a run on the RBI double it's now a 4 nothing ball game Major League Baseball is on the show back in New York New inning getting started and now the catcher comes up to him Freddy fine fine in his second season 28 years old he's been on a terrific run at the plate hitting over 350 in his last 10 the pitch and a foul ball the line in the pitch and he hits a ground ball right side he'll do it himself and the lead offense set down in their half of the F now B to right Hunter rro now it's Hunter Renfro he's over for one [Applause] and a base hit up the middle so they get a man a board with a one out [Applause] single only two hits allowed so far tonight boo so I don't think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much you know he's really been on top of his game commanding his pitches all night long man at first with one gone and now Adam Frasier that catches the [Applause] corner next offering is in for a strike he goes down looking and it first and to the pl for Kansas City Drew Waters 0 for one he struck out swinging last time out towards right center field judge cutting across makes the grab and that's the inning Royals leave one they Trail it here four nothing here at new Yankee stadium in the Bronx we head to the bottom of the fifth now juon [Applause] stoo the rightand her back to work and it goes just foul [Applause] that Clips the [Applause] corner and a good eye there well he's not afraid to fall into a two- strike count knows the strike zone very well so much so that I think umpires will look at him and determine whether it's a ball or strike if he swings or not and that's downed away [Music] that one is absolutely beled that's B back [Applause] G another Homer his second home run of the game it's 5 Z he's been so difficult to pitch against lately it seems like no matter how you attack him he finds a way to punish you a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of it he turned things over to the Southall Chris and one thing on him he's been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park not an easy guy to take deep here is Aaron [Applause] Judge first offering and it just [Applause] misses and now the Lefty right through there for a strike [Applause] out to Center no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's one down the catcher Austin Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees and that one fouled off in the air right field he makes the catch and there's two down maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it two out spes out John Carlos Stanton at the [Applause] pl swing and a highfly ball left field Isbell settles underneath it makes the catch that is the inning but the solo shot stretches their lead even further and the lead is now five nothing back to the Bronx top six now it's going to be Carson rockeford strowman back to work there's a [Applause] [Music] strike popped up to the left into foul ground Chisum calls it in and there's one away the offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter he's doing his thing out there they're going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder here's the third basem one for two swings through that one for strike one when a guy's throwing a lot of first pitch strikes as a hitter you got to be ready to hit now that's not going to help you get deep into his pitch count and into the bullpen but you got to take what he's offering that day rzo steps on the bag and a couple of quick outs good armide run and sink on that pitch right there got inside on him and got him to bounce into that out two outs Bas is empty Kyle Isbell steps in for the Royals and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed [Applause] hitter liner base hit and that gives Bobby Whit j a chance with the two out that UPS his hitting streak to Lucky Number 13 The Bakers doesn't Boo and it doesn't seem like a huge number but anytime you get to the point where you've hit in every game for almost two weeks straight uh that's a sign of what kind of rhythm you're in next to hit Bobby Whit Jr who over for two with a pair of strikeouts they say who win [Applause] inside just missed Isbell off of first with two away breaking ball through there for a strike [Applause] and that's downstairs and outside it's a good [Applause] take on the ground to the left and that's just [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foul two outs gets a piece and stays alive [Applause] that one the other way he's got it and that'll end the inning make it six shutout innings for him out there now it's the Yankees five and the Royals nothing back now in the Bronx John shy with Chris Singleton in the booth and leading off the bottom of the six Jazz Chisum Jr [Applause] and the pitch a little out front there as he swings through it [Applause] here comes a pitch and that one [Music] [Applause] upstairs that misses the zone now two balls in a strike the pitch back up the middle in a base hit and aboard on the leadoff single B over that one right there got a fast ball no one play jumped all over it absolutely smoked that ball so up next Jason Dominguez a switch hitter batting right swinging in a miss it's 0 and one the pitch and a foul [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ball the 02 one this one in the dirt and the runner stays where he is runner at first with no outs [Applause] here now snap throw to first and he Dives back in safely and the pitch that's to third off balance feed there's one but safe at first first it's a fielder's Choice tough play right there didn't really have enough time to set his feet and make a strong accurate throw had to rush it but he got it off and he got it there in time to get that out at second base man it first and now the first baseman Anthony Rizzo that one's in there o and one [Applause] at the belt and fires on the ground right side there's one what a double play that was inning over no runs one hit no errors and no one left we're through six full it's the Yankees five and the Royals nothing cousins on the pitch here and he's got nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hitters Nelson Velasquez digs in now Nelson Vasquez the pitch and that one missing low Clips the corner and the count is one and one in this situation you expect the Batters to be a little more patient possibly take until they get a strike with that you don't want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count he didn't right there next offering in there for a strike one and two all slider so far in this had back to get ahead in the count and clearly shows there was a game plan in mind for how to attack him in the box that one missed really good take especially with two strikes [Applause] that misses the zone and now three and two he's really tightening up his Hitting Zone with two strikes here I love it outside and that is ball four it's tough after falling behind a hitter two balls and no strikes but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter but he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction Freddy fine will hit next fine hitting better against right hand ERS this year so some reverse splits there that one finds the corner one and one if you're going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the leadoff man on everybody's got to look over the shoulder and say I'm just going to keep the line moving don't try to do too [Applause] much they tried to get him to chase on a slider down it away nobody out runner at first right through there for a [Applause] strike righty to the plate spoils the two- strike pitch and he'll see another swing and a miss struck him out slider got him for a strike three definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there I don't think that's a strike if he takes it pretty textbook pitching get ahead in the count get the guy in the Box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn't have much of a chance to do any damage red fro the next to hit takes ball one there's a strike at the knees and the count one and one man this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball today the Yankees leading by five here at the top half of inning number [Applause] seven close but called the ball and it's two and one last couple of pitches breaking balls away I think he's going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count and here it comes up the middle oh can't pick it up cleanly throw to first gets it good job to stay with it there for the second out Adam Frasier steps in for the Royals and boo I'd say he's [Applause] Doom that one back up the middle and it gets through around third here's the throw to the plate now no waiting around right there he was ready to swing it on the first pitch really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield Drew Waters now at the plate strike [Applause] one fraer leads off first with two down to the inning next offering is in for a [Applause] strike on the ground to third Jazz tosses the first and that'll do it but they pick up one run on the RBI single it's now 51 it's Major League Baseball on the show back here in New York there's the short stop at the play Anthony vulpi and a pitch that one's in there strike one activity in the Kansas City Bullpen Chris Stratton the veteran right hander appears to be loosening up Hernandez also getting ready swing and a miss and that strike two and he really sells the change up with that arm action and that's into dir the onew that's down and in Swang and a pop up sizing this one up makes the grab and there's one down up next to the the second B here's Gaber Torres he's [Applause] one to Third and that one handled in plenty of time to first two up two down now batt right field two outs Bas is empty and stepping in for the Yankees Juan [Applause] sto in the air to left Center on his way over brings it in with a nice run and grab and that is that out of the bullpen for the Yankees Tim Hill and they thought it was time to bring on a left-handed relever from the pin with the Lefty hitter coming up I think it's a good move I know I never liked when team did that to me here's the first Bas Carson rockeford and the pitch Hill measures 6' 4 in he features a four seam fast ball a sinker a slider and occasionally uses a cutter the [Applause] pitch so a foul ball makes it one and two kicks and fires swings throw it and that's a strike out oh we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the ball is following Su it's just a good day as a manager as a pitching coach you can hand the ball off to multiple arms get stability from all of their performances down the Third basem one for three Clips the corner that's strike [Applause] one Bas is empty one away and we're in the top of the eighth swing and a Fly ball in the air out towards right center field and that's a base hit so a man aboard so up now for Kansas City Kyle Isbell and that's in for a strike now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that Gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it's really important to getting back into this B next offering in there for a strike that is strike two all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire's calls but at this point he's going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the Zone came inside with that two strike fast nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn't get around on it and catch it out front any times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there pitches in for a strike and a count one and one two outs good eye in that [Applause] spot that one hit to right no trouble here puts it away for the out and that is that so one left for Kansas City they're down 51 back at Yankee Stadium and now the center fielder Aaron [Applause] [Applause] J and he deals and that's off the Inside Edge and that's ball one well he's so great about hitting the ball the other way gets those arms extended so right there just trying to straighten him up a little bit so he doesn't have as much outside plate coverage judge out on the play now P catcher Austin Austin Wells stepping in now for the Yankees that's in there and it's own and one [Applause] just missed one down base is empty foul ball [Music] left hand batter waights and another [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] ball ripped to Third and caught put a really good swing on that pitch and hit the ball hard you know line drives won't always find a hole but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit vow the better off you're going to be in the long run two outs SP is empty now here's John Carlos [Applause] Stanton in the air center field Waters drivs towards it makes the catch in and over taking over on the mound he pitched yesterday and we'll see him once again Velasquez steps in for the Royals the pitch swings and misses one Holmes multi-time Allstar he features a sinker a slider a slur and he works in a for [Applause] [Music] seamer here's a one-1 and a rope with the center field base hit so a runner aboard to start the inning everything came together for him just a very nice approach and swing right there to use the big part of the field
