but eventually the Tigers were able to come through and break through in that seventh inning with two runs and this is one of those games where I used in a previous life used to write game summaries after um covering a lot of different sports at Northwood University but covering baseball the 2-1 game where you get both runs without an actual RBI base hit you've get you get the dingler ground out on the fielders choice that yields a run and then the Parker Meadows SA acfic fly that scores Tolson and there wasn't any you know breakthrough hit or you know highlight real play that you look at but at the end of the day you chalk it up to a victory and in this day and age with the tigers or this point of the Season you feel like hey this is the Detroit Tigers team that uh you're wanting to just find a way to win especially especially after last night I don't want to call it a debacco but last night's Marathon that didn't yield win you just had to survive today and find a way to win and that's exactly what this Tigers team did brand herder gets the win he's kind of quietly four- one he goes five and the thirds four hits gave up just the one earned run and because the tigers were a the Tigers offense was able to get it done in that seventh inning that allows brand herder to get the victory so you look at the box score from this one and again it's almost like this was one of those games that it was just see what happens at the end you know survival if you will especially after last night you're just trying to figure out a way to get a win and give yourselves a chance for a series win tomorrow which is exactly what this team did so Brent herter gets the win four and one um Gunther was good Jason Foley gets his 21st save of the season and anytime it's a one-run game and you get a runner on in the home half of the ninth inning obviously you're feeling a little bit um on edge but uh credit to Jason Foley for coming through and uh getting the uh the final outs of those games to preserve the victory for the Tigers so total team effort in this one again it wasn't necessarily pretty I mean the the two runs scored we on an a fielders choice and a sacrific fly so not certainly a game that you you send into MLB Network for all the highlights or anything because there really wasn't any but it's a win it's a check in the w column and for the Detroit Tigers a much much needed and now you've got a chance tomorrow to salvage and I use the term Salvage but reach a point with this West Coast road trip for as bad as it was at sometimes in San Diego and losing last night you can salvage the road trip and go 500 three and three in the west coast road trip now as far as the Wild Card Standings um obviously the tiger still trying to fight their way and uh pass the Red Sox Mariners who are the other two teams ahead of them on the outside looking in with the Royals and twins holding those last two wild card positions you feel like um every little every every day counts obviously one day at a time we all know the cliche there um but today you you do your job and you get the win as far as the MLB scoreboard we love to take a look at the live MLB scoreboard as the tigers are chasing down that wild card and you need you're going to need some help so Cardinals Mariners later tonight and the Tigers should probably be most concerned with the Royals and twins who again they play later tonight and with those two teams kind of can cannibalizing each other um obviously some there's going to be a good result um when those two teams are playing because one team has to lose breaking news when those two teams play each other one team has to lose right Red Sox are playing the white socks later tonight so you don't necessarily feel good about that but the Tigers did their job in getting a win and now have a chance to win a series with the rubber match tomorrow as always thank you for making lock on Tigers postcast your postgame destination as always we want to make it a collaborative environment so let's get to those comments right away and Dennis leads us off go Tigers absolutely Jason Walter I smell a 500 finish at least yeah with the win today the Tigers go above 500 72 and 71 and that's not necessarily the the barometer the bar with this team but given the what they've done in the month of August really since July 1 you're going to feel good about the direction of this team in terms of how they're finishing this season especially when you consider hey sold at the deadline that had to happen and the way they were to make them they were to make the most of that schedule with a four-game series against the white socks the three games against the Angels you look at it that's really where it feels like it turned around for for me um and I know they lost two or three to the Cubs before that but the way this team came together early in the month of August started playing really good baseball and they just showed a lot of a lot of resiliency and never quitting and I know um we're still talking about that Parker Meadows Grand Slam in the finale against the Padres but I think that truly embodied what this team is is made of Rufus Elgato de baseball is up next and he says I did not like Foley for most of the season but he's starting to grow on me so there you go I mean I I have said from from almost the beginning when Tyler Holton went on that that tear of being the Tiger's best relief pitcher that I think he should be the closer and uh maybe in spring training when we look ahead to 2025 he's the guy that gets an opportunity to be that lights out closer but I mean Tyler Holton feels like the best relief pitcher on this team but to Jason Foley's credit I mean the resume is there he's made the most of the opportunities he's he's had came in had to get the final two outs tonight gave up the one hit but he gets his 21st save of the Season which is huge for this Tigers team Gareth ridings has a great win after last night's loss and honestly that's as simple as you could make it in fact we could probably end the show after that hey this team went 13 Innings toe-to-toe felt like they had the game won three or four times last night they didn't win the game you get a really really gut butw wrenching loss but you come back the next day and you find a way to get it done again it wasn't always pretty there wasn't even any highlight you take from this game and say that was awesome no it was just a RBI fielders Choice and then an RBI sack fly so not really super exciting but again the pitching staff deserves a lot of credit I mean you look at the guys that pitched in this game um of course Brennan hanify uh went went two-thirds in for the tigers um Brant herder gets the win now 4- one on the season and then you you had Ricky vesco come in for the Tigers and uh I guess he gets credit credited with a hole with the one hold with the one Innings pitch and didn't give up a hit a run or anything like that just a nice eight pitch inning for Vasco and then um don't forget Sean Gunther either uh Gunther comes in and gets a hold as well an inning in a third same thing just nice and efficient doing hisob job and it was another example of why you feel good about this Tigers Bullpen especially from what we've seen the last two months Demetrius mcneel is up next Jake despite 0 for 10 with men in scoring position yeah that part uh I'm glad you got to it I was going to get there eventually but 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position 10 strikeouts in 27 uh in two games they still managed to win by run how about that yeah how about that and now it all looks it all points to tomorrow where where you you just got to go and get a series win especially against I don't want to say an inferior opponent because Oakland has played really good baseball just like the Tigers has since July 1 which is crazy when you look at uh some of the better teams since July 1 not a lot of people had on their bingo card the Detroit Tigers and the Oakland Athletics Mark is up next he says good win however this win one lose one won't cut it exactly I mean we've said this from time and time again when this whole quote unquote Wild Card race began you feel like hey the margin for air is so so slim you got to win almost every game I think it was something like 25 and eight this Tigers team has to go so you can't win one lose one but on the same coin if you were to say hey last night 13 inning agonizing defeat yet you come back and win today you would feel good about the resiliency and the perseverance showed by this team to come back and win on a Saturday and have a chance to go for the series win tomorrow because again that's what it all comes down to and not to not to make it out of you know too much out of just one game but if they lose tomorrow then it does feel like hey season's over right uh it was a fun run and you gave it your all type of thing but you can't lose two a three at any point in this season because the the margin of air is just way too small for that matter all right we're going to take a quick break don't go anywhere we're going to break down that complain about that certainly not Me 2 to one over the Oakland Athletics and don't look now but tomorrow is the last time this Detroit Tigers team will play at the Coliseum saw a lot of signs at the ball at the ball game today and uh you know those those of you that know me very well know I am um dating an Oakland Athletic fan that's right Sydney carel and her and her family have talked at length I mean they've gone to Oakland Athletics games forever um see ticket holders everything else and it's just so sad what's happening in the bay for Oakland Athletic fans I mean they're going to play in a triple a ballpark instead of being the Oakland Athletics and eventually they'll get to Vegas and all of the scrutiny with the new stadium and everything that's happening in Vegas as it relates to John Fischer's team it's just there's a reason you see those t-shirts from Oakland Athletics fans that say sell they want him to sell the team it's a bummer what all this has turned into for Oakland Athletics uh fans and I quite frankly they deserve better but tomorrow certainly will be a um a day of reflection especially when you consider all of those postseason games that uh between those epic series between the Tigers and Athletics I have such fond memories of Justin Verlander dominating at the cisum both in 2012 and 2013 and so it's just one of those yes it's a dive bar it's it's got its uh you know I don't want to call it dump but it is it's there's so much personality to the Coliseum and such an identity with Athletics fans that to know that it's just going away is is certainly really really sad all right Mark is up next on the comments he said if I may I hate kler yeah nobody likes kler we won't spend a ton of time with that uh checking in from lmcu ballpark go caps there you go the West Michigan White Caps the tiger single a affiliate there you go in Grand Rapids Michigan we love our a little West Michigan side of things especially in the summer grew up going to Lake Michigan good stuff there next comment I wouldn't know what an amazing comeback win for the Tigers great job boys great job I can't wait till next year everybody yeah I get the next year um sentiments because I'm kind of there as well um yeah I mean we're going to continue to pay very very close attention to the Wild Card race because why wouldn't you I mean yes you're somewhat in the conversation is an uphill battle absolutely and we've said that time and time again and it's going to take um kind of a miracle but yes at the same time meaningful baseball in the month of September while evaluating who those pieces for next year will be and you feel really good about this club moving forward all right another comment as well I'm just excited for next year although the playoffs are within reach let's be realistic and I'm one of them dieh hard fans that never gave up while I'm being realistic there you go I think we're all there we're di hard fans but we're not giving up but at the same time we understand uh it's a little bit of a reach could be really really tough for this Tigers team to uh make the post season again a lot of the games that impact the standings are later tonight Twins and Royals later tonight um I believe Red Sox and white socks also later tonight confirmed there you go they are uh just getting ready for the first pitch there and then Mariners and Cardinals also getting ready for first pitch so keep your eye on that because right now the Tigers gained a half game still five back at 72 and 71 the Red Sox are 71- 70 the Mariners 72 and 70 they won a couple of games as of late and then the Royals and Twins playing each other Kansas City slightly ahead at 77 and 65 half game behind them are the Minnesota Twins at 76 and 65 those are the two teams that have the last wild card spot so there you go Tigers remaining schedule obviously they're going to finish up with the finale against the Athletics and then an off day on Monday before coming home to face I don't want to get ahead of myself and we've said this at length but the Rockies are not a good baseball team you got three with the Rockies the Orioles are a good baseball team competing for the AL AL East so absolutely that's going to be a challenge that's all part of the six game homand and then my goodness Circle this on your calendar Monday September 16th through Wednesday September 18th the Tigers go to Kansas City and if it's still Within Reach that's obviously going to be the series of the year and then three more with the Orioles that'll be in Baltimore before the Tigers close it out at home with the six game home stand the Rays those are winnable games and then of course the white socks the last three games those are very very winnable as well and I say this and I'm I'm saying this to myself because I need to be reminded of myself yes it's great to have an easy schedule remaining but you still have to go out and you still have to perform and you there's some shortcomings we know who struggles Matt verling 0 for four Andy Banes 0 for three jaay young 0 for one Riley green 0 for four and uh just it's it's it's tough um and I I I please excuse me I was looking at the wrong column one hit for Matt beerling so he was one for four one hit for Andy Banes one for three Justin Henry Malloy had a double in this game he was one for four Colt Keith one for four and then um a couple of oers Spencer Tolson 0 for four we know uh we've seen the Spencer Tolson it's either the popup or the strikeout that's what we get from Spencer tolon Zach mckinstry
