[FULL] MLB Network 9/9/2024 | Mark Derosa on Shohei Ohtani chasing 50/50 season, MLB Playoff picture

let's wake it up America who wants to go to the juice box and throw a two heater to Kobe RI nobody nobody Haven Smith wanted to go to Houston top of the old good old P I texted you Robert I said who hits this good old pin three to nothing diamond back my my feed watching the game I guess was behind yours so when you texted me I was like oh great oh thanks Arizona jumped out in a hurry and just added on he had a better Sunday than you I am just willing to guess eight to nothing Diamondbacks and to break it up in the bottom of the fourth Alex bregman they tried to chip away the lead just too great a man on Homer to left Bei done at a time two Ryan Nelson was throwing like 98 and he was cruising along and he couldn't get out of the fill it up again career high three homers what are you going to do with Verlander a three-run homer a grand slam and a last eight RBI the day belonged to him Smith at the plate looking to complete the Home Run Cycle in the top of the seventh Strikes Out Swinging but they score at least 10 runs for an MLB best and Robert you said this the other day and I I didn't know it for an MLB best 18th time didn't realize that aenos Suarez top of the ninth why not crack at the bat wow wow solo shot 12 to six your final most RBI in a game in Diamondbacks franchise history paven Smith is tied for second Arizona desperately needed a win to close out their six game Road Trip and they got got it nice little bow on top and a career-high three home runs in a game for paven Smith congratulations Rubio dzo Gator arms hit bomb Oh that's a good name forgot about him okay let's go to Kansas City uh Royals beginning a series later today against the New York Yankees but they were finishing up yesterday against the Minnesota Twins Michael Waka looking for career win number 100 Trevor lck that is extra bases Jose Miranda scores however lck fundamentals kids got him nice relay throw by Michel Garcia and we're still scoreless bottom of the fifth Garrett hampson base is loaded this is a sacked fly Twins were trying to avoid getting swept so a rough weekend in KC for the twinking and then a little bit later Salvador Perez how about an infield RBI and a hit for Salvador Perez it is two nothing Kansas City but Michael W seven Innings seven strikeouts we have talked about the veteran leadership and performance of Seth Lugal Michael Waka deserves his praise for falling into those categories as well as he was in line for the win so we go to the ninth Lucas EG looking to close it out and remember it was just last week that the Royals got swept in Houston in a four gamer they lost Vinnie pasquantino for maybe the rest of the regular season and seemingly their playoff hopes were in deep Peril however they're now just two and a half back of the division cuz the Guardians had some trouble over the weekend in Los Angeles we'll show you that but the twins now holding on to a final wild card spot three and a half clear in the American League Orioles they half game back of the Yankees in the division interested in division leaders I got you to Los Angeles on Sunday where the Dodgers have a six-game lead at top the NL West bottom of the fourth Will Smith Runners on the corners foring fastball don't mind if I do one of nine hits for the Dodgers on Sunday one- nothing just like that bottom of fifth Dro what did you say in our morning meeting Shani nobody on I don't honestly what is that is that what getting closer to 50 home runs I don't need the distance he's the most talented ball player we've ever seen 4646 Jack flarity to save the day gave the Dodgers exactly what they needed Pound The Zone maybe his best start with Los Angeles yeah 11 of his 14 swings and misses on the slider and the knuckle curve seven to the third for hits zero runs I want no part of this guy Micha What did the what did the Dodgers give up for Michael copc what was that because whatever it was it wasn't enough Max Muny bottom of the eth get out of the the ocean oh left on left left center field four to nothing Jack flare D back toback years gets traded at the deadline to a team in desperate need of innings California kid has more than delivered in dodger blue look at this der we had him on the show when we were when he was with the Tigers in Atlanta from Atlanta ballpark Camp remember that and I said the words when your star was on the rise and he said I was never a star do you remember that and I I I thought to myself in 2019 with the c know he was kind of ascending he said I have more work to do and my goodness he's been a godsend for Los Angeles your phones are and I'm sorry can you put that on silent please okay and he's going to be probably as of right now he's the number one starter in the postseason yeah you're right he's the guy with all everyone nicked up and I want to give him some love because not only has he been dominant yesterday against the guardians but he pitched in that division before getting traded over he had faced them three times previous to that a lot of familiarity between the two and he was dominant again two- one with a 1.07 ER in four starts this year against the Guardians and if you're going to control them you're going to control the top of their lineup right so let's get into Jack flarity I wanted Eric nases to dive in on did he attack him the same way in a Dodger uniform that he did in a Detroit Tiger uniform what's he doing different in a Dodger uniform that he might not have been doing in a CLE in a Detroit Tigers uniform so pause this real quick bring up I want to bring up the first board Devin I don't know if it's pitch usage or just kind of his ranks right now where yeah exactly give me the ranks because I want people to understand he's a top 10 pitcher in the game statistically this year this is MLB ranks erra he's six with a 2.86 strikeout percentage fourth walk 10th whiff second war eighth he's a top 10 game and he kind of bet on himself and the Detroit Tigers bet on him which I love with the oneyear 14 hey come over here we're going to teach you some things mechanically you're doing wrong we're going to show you that you need to be more down in a Zone location needs to get better and you need to start spinning it again it's what made you successful in the past and that's what he's done let's get back into the b-roll the one thing you've noticed with the Dodgers the curveball has become prevalent maybe not yesterday against the guardians but they have definitely shown him the ability pause this we're going to do some matchup work with Jose Ramirez bring up his pitch usage with the Tigers as opposed to the Dodgers take a look right here four seam fast ball 44% everything's kind of similar except for the curveball usage 19% to 26 a half a nice upswing and when you watch Jack flarity he's always had the ability to throw that nasty slider down the way but God he's getting in counts and putting away guys with a sharp breaking ball and if you're going to control the Guardians for four starts you got to control Jose Ramirez so I just want to take you through that little battle between the two I'm going to take you back non-competitive pitch on May 6th now he goes nasty breaking ball to get back in count this is one of the best hitters in our sport that doesn't get talked about enough we're going to get in a two two count on a paint pellet he wants to execute a nasty heater away and he leaves it middle good pitch right there now give me a change up down the way off that he tries to challenge him he doesn't execute the pitch he misses over the heart of the plate actually in and he takes him for a bridge as opposed to Let's fast forward to yesterday when he's executing pitches we'll give him that 01 if I if I locate that heater down the way and I get that even down I might get a rollover but you hitting a single doesn't hurt me Jose Ramirez I just can't have you take me deep in a big spot so right there an O heater away then a change up off it again another change up a little slider to get me back in the count and then he gets nasty with a backf foot slider right there so Jack flarity I don't know how Doc Roberts is going to lock in his starting rotation for the postseason he's got 21 games to figure it out and I'm going to get to the fact that I don't think necessarily it's going to be Monumental who takes those starts because their W pen is absolutely stacked but Jack flarity is certainly in line to potentially get game one show he Otani I'm sitting there last night on the plane and I'm reading a lot of notifications on X and kind of diving in and everyone there's this huge ground swell to get Lindor a potential MVP over shohi like we're being bored by what shi's and then I just like had to go to his baseball reference page and say to myself we're watching Barry Bonds at the same time and oh by the way he's recovering from Tommy JN and he's a top 10 starting pitcher in the game they'll strike out 250 batters next year go look at his numbers it's grotesque what this man is doing to our sport on a daily basis so I want to love on him a little bit he's got 46 home runs 46 stolen bases and not only that we Rave about air judges prodigious power oh I I mean this guy's hitting balls to Parts Unknown it's 02 against Merill Kelly then it's a back door breaking ball dead center at Chase Field I'm going to keep it going we're just giving you his last five homers the ball he hit yesterday you couldn't tell if it was fair or foul cuz it was obliterated into the sky here he is 10 off Matthew Boyd left on left staying inside the baseball look at this change up where's it go no one knows we got to replay it no one knows where the ball is it's hitting off the third facade look at this side angle pause now slow click this just reaches back right there I mean just everything coming through that baseball utter destruction I mean phenomenal all right you can run it so he's got 46 tanks and any he stealing bases so he decided okay I'm not going to help the team on the mound I've normally been a 40 Homer kind of 18 to 20 stolen base guy well if I can't help him on the mound how can I get better oh I know how I'll get better I'll steal 50 bags this year pause this real quick before we get into the bonds comparison bring up a stolen stolen base percentage board 2021 to 23 57 stolen bases in 82 attempts 69 and a half% success rate look at him now so when he puts his mind to deciding he wants to kind of conquer a certain tool of the game he's the best in the world at it and take me back to 1993 when Bond signed the richest deal with the San Francisco Giants I went back and I was looking at his baseball reference and he was like 40 homers in that time 20 bags that's what he was doing per year it's what osan's doing in a Dodger uniform and he's going to be their number one starter potentially next year when he's back so bring up that comparison board and then I'll just rip up the Dodger Bullpen player comparison first season with his new team Barry Bonds in 1993 played in 159 games hit 46 Jacks 123 RBI and stole 29 BS just breathe what he's doing in the weight it runs created plus is absolutely crazy over here 193 so he's giving you bonds like production and he's going to be at the front end of your rotation next year okay as I was drifting off to sleep the other night I saw Blake trying and throw two of the most disgusting sweepers I had ever seen and it kind of led me to how many weapons doc holiday's got in his Bullpen down there doc Roberts so let's get into it watch the depth of these pitches that Blake Tran's throwing watch this to schneeman how are you supposed to hit this next pitch that schneeman I mean it takes a leftand turn run that back just now run it again I want people to understand this ain't rolling you're looking for it Rolling In the Zone this is a hot left-hand turn and gone so Dave Roberts can go get trinon in a big spot if he wants him he could go get Evan Phillips in a big spot if he wants him he could go get Daniel Hudson who's closed out the 2019 World Series he can go get Michael copc he's got lefties in Banda he's got lefties in besia who's throwing an invisible fast ball Evan Phillips has got closing in his day Joe Kelly's out there so I know everyone's concerned about the Dodgers starting rotation and who's going to get the ball but I really look at their Bullpen as man it might be a four or five inning game and then it's just here we go all right let's take a look at the last board bull penny we all the Guardians are on there pods are there as well I don't think the Dodgers are getting enough love for kind of the bullpen they have yeah also uh Cubs and Dodgers begin a Series tonight Walker bu will get another start for Los Angeles so another important start as he tries to work his way back uh from a injury filled 2024 campaign all right let's go to uh Atlanta or Atlanta adjacent Blue Jays Braves Chris S once again dominant did he lock up the national league sa Young Award with another dazzling performance yesterday against the Blue Jays seven strikeouts six Innings of work the eth inning he's in line for the win but it's one nothing one nothing Atlanta Spencer Horwitz is at the plate and that is a two-run homer his 12th Blue Jays on top two to one so no save opportunity for sale in the ninth Matt Olen ties this game up with a sa fly so now we have extra innings presented by Geico in the 11th George Springer that's a dribbler up the middle Blue Jays On Top 3-2 we go to the home half Runners at the corner Adam Duval get to the Jaa Addison Barger that ball gets away runner from third scores we're tied at three next batter Shawn Murphy Braves have 12 Extra Inning wins this season no other team has more than nine Chris S hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a start since June 1st Braves walk it off 4 to3 over the Blue Jays they're now tied with the Mets for the final wild card spot in the National League Wild Card here's Chris Sail after the win that's big time um you know obviously winning the series uh you know grinding through one of those hot you know late in the late in the year Day games and just building building momentum you know that was that was a dog fight from the jump this time of year we just need to win games whatever it is that we're called upon to do whether it's you know thr 113 at pitches or having him come in for multiple Innings um you know as a as a closer that's what we sign the dotted line for and that's that's what we're that's what we're ready to do so uh again just got to win the games in front of us and and see how it shakes out I mean this guy has been amazing and he could be in line to win his first career sa Young Award John morosi is going to join us a little bit later to put into context what that could mean historically if Chris S is able to close the deal by the way there are just two games separating four teams in that National League Wild Card Standings all right JP marosi is taking over he will be asking the questions to start the inside corner on the Monday good morning to you his first is directed to Mark doosa what do you got uh Lauren Mark D Roa is a television genius because he actually created a multiple part Harrison Bader conversation in the last segment did you know Dro as we were talking about Harrison Bader's Uncle one of Harrison baer's uncles is Jimmy beo the actor Jimmy beo plays and you talked about Kelly lee Jimmy beo plays Carmen ronzone in Bad News Bears training breaking training which is one of our favorite movies that we show on embe network so Mark D Roa that was threedimensional chess that was a multiple time's gonna say we're changing lives is that what you're gonna say that's crazy I'm seeing the world right now we lost you I don't we lost you oh my gosh R I can't segue to Chris I'm not smart enough but my goodness what more can you say I mean my favorite JP is when you went to the box score 113 pitches what can you say what's impressed you most Lauren Chris Sale is on the verge of the first saong award of his illustrious career and you think about the number of years it's taken him to get to this point I know I thought in my own mind hey he's already won a couple he hasn't he's been a top five finisher multiple times but here's where he would rank among the oldest firsttime Sai Young Award winners great research on this from Eric Nas and it's been a magnificent season for sale with the Atlanta Braves you've also got a credit Alex anthopolos remember they acquired them right around the the holidays and they immediately sign him to an extension covering next season so they've already got him under contract now he's been on point the health has been there and we referenced earlier Lauren the number of times he's finished in the top five he had six straight Seasons back when he was in the American League six years in a row of a top five finish without ever win winning it and again Eric Nas's research you check with Elias on this that had never happened before for a pitcher to finish in the top five for that long without ever winning it so now as one of the potential oldest firsttime winners I believe he's going to do it what a magnificent year for Chris sale in Atlanta you can say that again he was asked about wanting to win sa young in a postgame press conference and he said you mean the World Series so well played I was watching Cubs Yankees JP over the weekend saw Nester Cortez coming in in relief and we had heard Aaron Boon say we're going to get creative at the back of games is that going to be what's happening in the future what do you think well Lauren it's a really interesting topic right now for the New York Yankees and what Nester Nester Cortez Jr said to reporters after the game the other day was that he's already been told he does have one more start coming up this weekend but beyond that there's the possibility that once the Yankees go from a six-man ration back to fiveman he might be back in the bullpen and he acknowledged in in talking to reporters over the weekend in in at Wrigley Field that he didn't love this decision and it's an interesting conversation because he spoke on his own behalf yeah I'm a starting pitcher I want to start uh he acknowledged that obviously he was the opening day starter for the Yankees while Cole was on the iil he leads them in Innings pitched this season so with all of that as context Lauren it's hard to take that assignment to the bullpen uh when you consider now they've got six healthy starters to choose from but Aaron Boone even in the same breath said listen we we appreciate him as a teammate that he went back there even though it wasn't his his number one option and he pitched really well in a shut out win in relief of Clark Schmidt and Nester Cortez you said basically the same thing hey I didn't love this but I but I understand this is my role right now and I'm and I'm gonna embrace it so uh credit them for being a great teammate even though right now the role that he appears to have in the next couple weeks is not the one that Cortez expected to have just probably a couple weeks ago JP I'm just sitting out the AL race until they play each other the ser before the last because I feel like it's just going back and forth and we're not going to know anything for a long period of time Orioles offense though four runs four games has to be better what do you see well I think it's been a case of Jordan Westberg injury on the 1 of August Lauren changed a lot about the Baltimore Orioles they are now 17 and 18 since Westberg went on the I and the Run differential is zero they are exactly an average team over now basically six weeks of time almost without Jordan westbr so look at all those players on the a there's still some hope they might be able to get some of those offensive contributors back but uh in the case of Westberg the latest report on this according to fb.com Lauren he has not yet been cleared to take swings in live BP it's going to be a long way to go I believe the Orioles are full strength four games under 500 last 70 games according to Eric nay JP rosi appreciate the time as always and the Insight rathert take it away what do you got Lauren let's talk about another American League each team Casey getting a jersey vocabulary lesson D what did you learn D forward he says forward yeah is forward right forward and they say draw like draw or the roof yeah the roof rof Philly Delaware is water is water water water I love water yeah my wife Sarah has that Jersey accent to and she says Sarah I can't even say it how she says it sorry not sorry Sarah from the Concrete Jungle makes you tough makes you tough that's right what's on the old DVR for this week that you saw this week know who learned that Georgia Tech they told Syracuse oh we're going to play t yeah come to Northeast we're tough exactly ready yeah whoops the you know who's tough and he's been nicked by the injury bug and I was just so happy to see him cuz he's a friend of the show yeah man and he's going full beard mountain man I like it he was catching cads with you in Cleveland BRS try again Des Watson but it was good to see Trevor's story back and I think we we forget right case from 18 2018 to 2020 shortstop wise this was the best game this was the best in the business bring his board up take a look at this 162 game average from 2018 to 20 hitting 292 with 37 tanks 29 stolen bases so I know he's been nicked by the injury bug in Boston and we just have not been able to put eyeballs on him but it's it's good to see him battle back get back in this lineup kind of work Red Sox are four back they begin a series at home tonight the baseball gods are not going to let him in the Oriol isn't it crazy his injury was in April and you always say the game just goes on but it's so it's so nice right yeah so nice to see him back we didn't think he was coming back and as a player too when you're when you're coming back like this this is like it's like Christmas to be back in September just a back yeah okay there's a guy that got his H 100th win that when you dive in on the numbers why is he not talked about more Michael Waka has been a darn good pitcher in this league for a extended period of Time dating back to when he was throwing in Fenway in the the World Series for the Cardinals and I'm telling telling you when you watch this guy straight over the top he's huge like 66 and it's you can't tell if it's a fast ball or a change up it is coming right out of the same tunnel and he can throw 94 top of his Zone I can't wait to talk to Sal Perez about him he's got the two seam paralyzer coming back their starting rotation has been the rock of this team the entire season and I just want because we love on framber Valdez but when you look at Michael Waka n doesn't he does an amazing job why is he not getting more run pitchers with a 120 ra Plus or higher in each of the last three seasons listen I don't I know he's not framber but the numbers say he is yeah and the industry knew it the Royals knew it too when they went to get when they went to get Waka I thought wow what a great sign this is you look at that rotation D with adding Lugo adding Waka to those young kids and Reagans and singer those guys it's been this Michael walk has been a great sign singer goes tonight as they begin a series in in in the Bronx against the Yankees and they make good plays there was a relay from rro to Garcia did you see that I'm I'm going to do it tomorrow I I honestly was like do we do Royals this is the truth this is how we do it if Royals are Dodgers in the a block and I we have done so much Royals that I was like we got to love the Dodgers here a little bit with Otani and flarity but yes I saw the relay it was first inning are you saying the Dodgers don't get a lot of I just felt like we should lean Dodgers today they're the Dodgers I got it and we got salvi coming in whenever we get a tweet that we don't talk about the Dodgers Robert because it's into or um you guys don't talk about the the Yan enough really really got to keep the lights on know what I'm saying know you know who's keeping the lights on for generations to come in his family mat till 2030 congratulations mat got changing money we got lifechanging money here we go he's already loaded but now he's just like get out of my face loaded okay this guy that's a tear there's a tear to it basically say get out of my he said you're not I don't need to be friends with anybody 23 bombs 71 RBI 15 stolen bases I I think the thing for me is the Giants need a direction when I watch them I don't necessarily know pause this real quick because I want to have a Chatman conversation before we dive in on this he stands for everything that's good like he's going to show up every day I know exactly what match Chapman's bringing to the table every day potential hit me in Big Three run bomb he's one of the best defenders in the sport he's going to show up he's going to keep everybody in check you know exactly what you can pay these guys for the next six years I know exactly what's walking through the door with Matt Chapman at 6 for one case there was some concern or some people that brought up well maybe towards the end of this contract it won't age well but to D Ro's Point they've had trouble signing some time free AG this is a guy that is kind of a Lynch pin this is a guy it doesn't matter if the last couple years or whatever you need a guy that you can that you can lean on and look to and and like d Ro said this guy's a leader he was a leader in Toronto he's a leader in Oakland he's back with Mo B Mel out there in San Francisco this is a great sign for the Giants and uh he's proven this year that he he's earned it and Alex bregman Lauren looks at that and goes what do you think what do you think he says he think oh good I'm gonna get more I know I'm going to get a little bit more a little bit more little bit more a little bit maybe a lot more I don't know a lot of bit Yeah whole lot of more lot of more okay this happened over the weekend I wanted your take on this I'm being honest with you I played middle infield my entire life I think I need boots on the ground to this is Tyler Fitzgerald and Mark understand a little bit because I have played with guys in case you can attest to this some guys will tell you hey you got every popup I don't like them wait really oh oh I played with a lot of guys like that like with a third baseman I say Bo boony didn't like POA Boon didn't like POA LK take everything take everything some guys don't like them dep perception wise they can't figure it out that does doesn't seem to be the case here if you could run that back for me that's Matt Williams getting there is a kind of written code here you don't cross over onto my side of the field I've busted my tush to get here keep going all the way back all the way back Dev right there you can see how far he goes yeah watch how far he comes across second base I need you to stop right there but D to be clear you said that there's some guys that would prefer their team strike me as that guy the popup yeah this is egregious for me like I have words with the shortstop if you're going to do that again I don't know the backstory I don't know their relationship to together I don't that's a little over the top of short state short stop has priority over everything like do can't yeah Luc he's their top prospect and who's not to say tomorrow or the next time they show up at the yard they're not hugging it out or it's probably already squashed well yeah it's oh it's definitely already squ when yeah that's an embarrassing moment so you're going to be like hey man why you coming over to my I understand the argument cuz that happens but yeah it's squashed already you're a big leager second base every day in the big leagues I need I need you I get paid too yeah get out of here all right we and Matt Williams always is he's a drill sergeant always there to like Matt's the best he's not here for nonsense he is not here for nonsense he's not here for Tom Foolery okay what else is on the old last thing I noticed I want to revisit this trade the minute this trade happened I'm I'm being dead honest with you not 30 seconds after Eric nay researcher to the Stars texted my phone and said this is a whiff tra that's what he said he said I like Trevor roggers but you gave up a lot you could have gotten some other things here and your Trevor Rogers is for next year anyway yeah right he was recently in the minors yeah yes hours has struggled since going over there Conor Norby has been hitting absolute rocket ships all over the park for the and I want to give him some run because he's hitting 329 six home runs 13 RBI and he's saying to himself you know what I'm not going to look at this as glass half empty I'm getting a chance to play every day where where I wasn't getting that opportunity in Baltimore I can't imagine case spattering a fan Marlins Park playing out the string he's not I I I I know I know the situation when I came up with the Cleveland Indians I was stuck behind Tomy all these guys next you know I'm traded to the Reds I'm like the Reds weren't good at the time but it gave me a chance to play right it gave me a chance to Showcase my talents and say I'm a big leager too I just don't have an opportunity you look at Norby now he's got the opportunity in Florida here he goes taking advantage of it hitting tanks all over the place in that Park so he's got big time he's got big time settle gives you that much confidence that's crazy no one you're in there every day and I think the Marlins did pretty well for themselves at the deadline see what they do moving forward all right let's take a quick time out here on MLB when we come back I know I'm I don't like the way I'm being pushed around always told me that and S perz an elite company look at this catchers to hit 250 plus home runs with a single team in MLB history and there is the captain of the Royals who looks like you did Robert back in 2011 2012 we are thrilled yeah that he is here in studio with us and you guys case and D have resisted the urge to wear cologne and after I just go like this right here I smell Salvador Perez always smells the best smelling human in the world always smells great you know he reminds me of honestly I haven't been around you much like I played with the big cat galaraga just like a wall touch right I'm looking at this time out Sal nine-time Allstar five time Gold Glove Award winner four time Silver Slugger World Series MVP you're highway I you have a chance guys all right so take take us through it you went through just a tough a real tough year last year and to kind of see what JJ and Matt your manager have done and keeping it steady and you brought in these pictures and Bobby wit's taking it you have to be flying High super happy right now we are right now and yeah they just doing some pretty good job in the off season you know with a lot of phone call try to go try to get this guy guaca Lugo sh shantum you know will me he got experience in in World Series and the Bobby we Junior Contra you know super happy for him so it's kind of it's kind of hard coming from Loose H game plus game and now fight for playoff tell tell us about Bobby WT what's it like watching him every day it's amazazing we're going to keep saying that and I know couple team is going to get M but he's he's the best player I ever play with wow you know the way he prepared himself you know and and and I tell you guys this I think his D help hang a lot you know play 16 J big lead it's amazing you know so he know how to teach Junior you know even in the tough moment you know so it's the way he prepar himself he get to The Bard Park he like to play every day he don't want any off day only W the age whole season this year yeah so it's pretty cool wow I I want to dive in you're like not slowing down if anything you're on kind of like this this rise offensively you become like a massive massive Force at the plate I'm watching you guys in Cleveland we'll get into it the homers you're hitting I want to I want to talk about so I want to take you back in time 2015 cuz when you go baseball reference that's what I was doing last night I had the Cowboys beating up on the Cleveland Browns not let's not get it twisted and then I'm looking at s Perez let's dive into the tape here Devon and I'm looking at s Perez's reference page and I'm like man he's putting up some big time stuff take Sal come on what was this salv 201 show up on the scene that was sherzer we're taking him in the Gap and it hasn't stopped if anything at the plate and I want to talk to you about your presence at the plate but we'll go all the way back 20 15 in the postseason the game moves slow to you has it has it always been that way it seems like you really enjoy there you're not there you don't feel much pressure playing I like to feel happy you know it's I lost to play baseball you know and I just tried to do my J and my team to win that was pretty cool when did you think you were getting World Series MVP I don't think I never think about there it is the CEST think about that game I don't have chance to catch the last inning the last out what wait why I got it basy the eating before yeah for dys Dyson get to first B and run for me we got a pinch run for you though we got to be honest come on I got Dyson on the bench I got to make the move we got to be honest keep running this cuz I want to get into now where B cuz I'm telling you s I'm watching you guys on a nightly basis the Kansas City Royals the Padres some of these teams that I focus on on a nightly basis you're hitting I mean that Ball's killed run that run that back run that back that's 3-2 this was a this was a double header I believe this day that yeah that was the first game I think the GR in the second game or the same game maybe I want the next one I know Bader put it on there Bas is loaded here it is 31 I was watching this at bat live can you take that at bat back take that back pause this you have to understand this he had just taken three balls that were in off super inside super inside like moved your feet and I'm saying how is he like take me in thinking destroy situation 3-1 I just trying to see the ball up you know just something it's basic SL I don't think he want to walk me and I know I'm kind of a little bit aggressive and he had to throw stri so I just trying to see the ball out and try to put a good swing how are you up and up and out yeah like all part over the play M he got pretty good slide that why I don't change the first three pict inside F inside and slideer to the back F so now he has to go uh in the St Z and that what I do you do you sit certain pitches or are you sitting up out over that's a slider that kind of rolls in there are you still hunting the heater though I like to see in s picture sometime you know right now that we got the technology and everything so the percent 3 31 is 80% is sled something like that so you have to take a chance it's what you want to take 20% or the 80% chance exactly so I I I like to see on pictures isn't that isn't that amazing though real quick how how the game has changed as far as that goes like 3120 used to be heater middle in now it's slider now it's no more no more fast hey you hit this and your reaction is like yeah pause the action right here reaction he was like like okay look where that goes I played there that place stole my soul for three months back in the day Soul all right in 09 I had played there in 09 I was like oh my God but I want to talk to you about what you're trying to do at the at the play I'm a double top guy I I I like to come and get close and that's what I do my leg key it's kind of I have to be on time you know to try to hear a good pit and put a good swing it's kind of hard to do the double tap but I just I get used to that for timing yeah for timing and yeah that's what I like to when did you when did you develop the double tap I think 20112 yeah Kansas City by way minor leag they try to take me out the lake key but I I always do that even when I was 12 I have some videos my mom have that I always like to play are you thinking about this back hip or anything like that lock lock my back hip yeah when I get to the box I like to like feel this and my knee have to go straight to the ball that I like to do better teach me that KNE go to the baseball I like that never heard front hip tight M knee to the ball so you're just okay I'm kind of like that with my knee before I try to move I start to move all right run this I mean that's gorgeous right there nothing going forward wow pretty good thing that's a pretty [Laughter] good to see that one feels good hey you don't get enough love for behind the dish too how many gold gloves you got five five that's pretty darn good I mean and you're a brick wall back there is there is there anything if you were teaching kids at home I coach my son's 14 you team is there anything you would tell pause that kids at home to work on if they're catching right now it's about framing okay that's what I I I when I got in Kansas City today is there a drill you do forame just I have like a heavy ball you know and put it in my glow and just doing this to the to the stri sound from to yeah can you explain that because I was fascinated by this when I was back in the Dugout last year with the Yankees of the framing from from from down to up right it didn't always was it wasn't always like that s right can can you show that to us hey back in the day like 2011 12 13 let the B get to you you know that's why I catch like a two up and everything so let the B get to you now you have like to go get the B you know I feel like we we Che to the d i but it's the way is right now you know they want to see a good presentation yeah you know and you got the umpires in your back pocket no yeah you have I'd be like what do you think S no you got to be honest now they can go see it now you li to him the next day you're like you li to me I was about outside you tell me what's a right so buto I I always right now just tell the the little kids you know like they want to be a cater just try to work and frame it that's the most important to so put a heavy ball in your glove and kind of work through the Zone yeah and especially now I got Nick it's a little bit more put here and go and and S that's new though right the the down to up right you didn't always do that right no just what's the reason what's the reason that you guys go down and come up now let the both travel you know and let you King and as soon as you see kind of an optical illusion right soon as your glove goes down it's kind of like he caught it bad on balling it but if it's if you stick it tight yeah but watch watch salv these guys they're go they're set up and they're going down literally the glove goes down then it comes up comes up yes that's the way with what's that guante you got there yeah hey I I gotta be honest to you hey you look pretty good over there I think it's a bless to you be available to play two position in you know dude and you're playing it above average you're playing a great you're playing a great first base I like the that's incredible how are you liking it Sav how you like him play a little first base here and there I love it I don't feel anything the next day your quads AR on fire yeah how feel I don't do anything in my off day what's been the toughest thing for you at first base pop popups yeah way different from from behind the home plate to a first B we were just talking about that with Tyler Fitzgerald and Luciano how Fitzgerald came over and I'm like some guys don't like popups I think that was the hardest thing to learn from in first Bay yeah cuz the from behind the home plate the boss coming to you you have to turn around the boss's going to come to you for first B know righty Lefty you know how the bo going to come down have you had a chance to catch passes with Patrick Mahomes no I understand no no yeah does he come down come down he come down take some BP ever no BP just talk to off a little bit hey uh Salvador my Uber driver yesterday said he played with you um I have a feeling however that he was uh maybe fibbing and because I looked up his name I couldn't find his name on there so hey Salvador is going to continue to stick around he's got an important announcement we've got an important announcement a little bit later that's on this Edition Lauren shahadi welcome inside this next 30 minutes dedicated to Roberto Clemente nominees you were a nominee backtack years you heard them saying it's an honor and a privilege case it's an honor I'm from Pittsburgh too I so I know what Roberto keni meant to the city of Pittsburgh the game of baseball the Latino Community Puerto Rico everything incredible still doing stuff he is he is all day long for the Miracle League it really is it's it's great Stu it's great Stu so let's get to it risk young women by providing critical interventions and support from the Kansas City Royals Salvador Perez he's a shining example of humanitarianism creating opportunities and better outcomes for the less fortunate in his native country Venezuela and here in the United States with a focus on healthy and active communities one of the key initiatives of the Royals Community impact from the Minnesota Twins Pablo Lopez's remarkable passion for serving others predated his career in Minnesota earning him a Roberto Clemente award nomination during his time with the Miami Marlins with his season's new Pablo day initiative Pablo and his wife Kaylee are using his star status at Target Field to bring financial support and awareness to local nonprofits and we are pleased to be joined again in studio here by Salvador Perez it's good to see you first of all what does it mean to be nominated for this the Roberto Clemente award it's amazing you know especially what what he do outside the field you know ER everybody know he was great player but what he do exide the field was even better take care of people you know Pride food anything he can help you know to H Puerto Rico anywhere you know so it's it's pretty good I'm looking at the numbers here Salvador from from what you have done it's it reads here that you have directly impacted over 10,000 families that receive much needed relief what does that mean I know where I com in from you know it's it's kind of hard we got to be honest to it's something that we're don't going to hide it you know everybody can see that H I don't have that kind of opportunity so I always tell myself you have that kind of opportunity to help people are we going to do it you own a youth league in Venezuela is that coaches is that fields that are really playable tell me about it yeah we have 200 KY my mom and myself H like a little te from 4 years old to like 16 years old so we prepare everything it's probably by the way that picture is in Kansas City H full coaches everything every two years it goes beyond the field uhhuh with there exp oh I'm sorry no I was just going to say you educate them on the danger of getting off track too so it's more than just on the field you talk to them about drugs and staying in school why is that so important tell me what your messages yeah I think education you know I think that's the most important thing I I I love to play B but if we don't have any education it's going to be kind of hard a little bit ER I think it's good to take it out out of the tree especially in Venezuela you know and and it's something that I like to do and have opportunity to do it and we're going to continue were there were there former big Leaguers that kind of paved the way like I got a chance to go over in 99 2000 played in karacus so like I got a love for Venezuela and playing it and I saw all the young players like playing with us taking ground balls with there was there was like a conveyor belt of of treating the young player good was there was there some ex- big Leaguers that kind of did that for you uh I don't have that was different and my my case was so different because I coming from like nowhere you know yeah and nobody in my family play baseball so was kind of different but yeah I understand what you're saying and I saw a lot of a lot of big leag guys doing that in Venezuela yeah salv you have such a big heart and such a big heart for kids obviously out in Venezuela also in the Kansas City Community I thought one of the coolest things that I've seen in a long time is if Salvador pre came to your whiffle ball game in the neighborhood can you take us through that store like what happened there bro it was incredible that was off day my friend invited me for lunch in his house and after I lunch you know I get out I get in my car yeah and you know I saw a bunch of kid play with b and I tell myself should stop and say hi to this guy yes so I stop you know I get out my car and and and I asked this kid like hey can I play with you guys and they turn around and me like okay yes when they come on yeah go and play with us so did you teach them anything how to have fun just see the boy H the B that's CRA to he a a wh Bo different yeah yeah it's moving all over the place I think it just speaks to you you mentioned your love and the work that you do in Venezuela but also your sense of community for the place that you call home now Kansas City Kansas City what does that what does Kansas City mean to you um everything my second home er you know do that you know help kids teaching you know talk to the kid in off day something like you know it made me feel feel happy you know and and I don't have that kind of opportunity when I went growing up so I like to do it now I mean does it come from your mother where where where does that personality I I wrode the it's your mom I wrode the emotion you knew if I was hitting good or hitting bad based on oh yeah you kidding me you're the same guy both of you very similar your old positive spirit I that's so infectious to to your teammates it comes from from my mom your mom she teach me the right way and did she have like a saying like attack every day like it's like you have to be the same guy every day because you're going to have some good day and bad day so in the bad day you don't want people know you know in the good day yeah letting know the people that but in the bad day situation yeah she great J Sor when you got in this league what was your hope for your career 2011 2012 was it play a certain amount of years what was your hope then 13 ago yeah s was one of my go fors in Venezuela and believe know I play baseball for just fun I don't even think that we're going to sign and have a chance to make it to a bigly you know and yeah after you make it to a bigly it's not just make it it's not just let me drink a coffee in bigly no how do I can stay in bigly you know and you have to work more you have to sacrifice yourself more even the offseason you know and all that well I thank God for everything yeah well Salvador thank you very much for joining us here in studio you're one of our favorites congratulations on all the success that you and the Kansas City Royals have had this year and congratulations on being the Royals nominee for the Roberto Clement say great Salvador Perez here joining us in studio Royals beginning Series tonight in the Bronx against the so grateful the nominees in the National League central for this year's Roberto Clemente award are in Chicago Patrick
