MLB Network | Mark Derosa breakdown Sean Manaea sharps 11 K's as Mets def. Diamondbacks 8-3

well we previewed it uh in pregame we've been saying it for um you know his last uh six or eight starts and he's got his 10th win of the year and he just is a different pitcher since he changed the arm angle since he changed his delivery angle and he's more confident he's firing uh both the slider uh the and that fast ball especially that fast ball up in the zone with great play on it great ride on it getting byy hitters and then the sweeper must seem like it's coming from first space because you see a lot of awkward swings in it you see a lot of takes on that sweeper and he can go inside or away with it and he just had these guys off balance it's too bad that he ended up giving up the uh the home run to Corbin Carroll late in the game I didn't think he necessarily needed to go out uh for that seventh but sha manah very very good again gets the Zeal of approval and the fast ball six strikeouts on the fast ball and look there's a handful of change ups that he used the third time through us it pretty effectively but it was really the the um story tonight was that fast ball sweeper usage and look this is a team that doesn't strike out a lot we saw the San Diego Padre's team that doesn't strike out a lot and um you know they were putting the ball in play uh the entire game today uh sham Manaya looked like a team that does strike out a lot because he just has been a different guy with that delivery that fast ball especially to me gets on these guys at 9394 it it looks like it's playing 9798 and then they've got to be able to try to get ready for that one and then they're off the sweeper so great job by Shan that is by the way his eighth quality start since the beginning of July that is the most in the National League and I wonder here he's 32 years old but with this change in arm angle to the opposing hitters who many have seen many of them have seen him a lot in the past does he look like a different pitcher a new pitcher that they're facing well he probably looks similar to what they're they've seen before but they're like wow it's exploding on now I mean we talk about Chris Sail who's obviously a guy that's lanky and out from that angle gets under the ball the ball seems to ride but I also had mentioned at times uh a little Madison Bumgarner and Madison turning more his back striding a little towards first base and then coming back around you pick up the ball late when a pitcher's able to do that and the one thing that we never have really talked about it's not easy for a guy that's already gone through a he's a veteran pitcher at the big league level and makes an adjustment because he sees a guy on the other side of the field uh that says you know what I think I'm going to try that and all of a sudden he's taken from being a good pitcher and a quality starting pitcher to an above average like a really really high quality Ace type pitcher at least for this Mets team right now and the core strength that he shows in being able to do that consistently 80 90 pitches in a game and that extra torque is something that I think shouldn't go unnoticed as well so um just been very impressed with the consistency that he's shown once again no walks today Gary right and we saw that he had struggled with walks early in this season and his command uh being uh you know off and on it's just been great to see him zoned in the way he has been so again he picks up his 10th win of the year and he got the offensive support as the Mets pounded out 13 hits in this game they got multi-hit games out of Lindor and Vientos nmo and Martinez uh Brandon had a three hit game his first is all the way back on August the 2nd moments ago he had a chance to visit with Steve GBS all right Brandon we're going to talk about your thread night in just a second but I've got to start this interview by talking again about Shawn manah what he's done over the last month has been pretty remarkable what have you seen not just tonight but over this recent stretch where it seems like he's turned into a Bonafide Ace yeah I mean the last guy that I've seen you know kind of pitch like this uh is probably deg Grom you know where you're just going going through it and just swing Miss swing Miss swing miss you know and go back to the Dugout um and uh you know it's pretty pretty impressive to watch um and I know from facing him that he's he's not an easy at bat but I think he's also found another gear and kicked it in and and I'm so happy for him because he's such an amazing guy as well and such a great Clubhouse guy so it's twofold for me I'm just I'm really happy for him as you know as as the person that he is and now figuring out as the competitor he is he's he's taken it to a new level and and it's really fun to watch all right for you the three hit night like I said anything in particular that you took out of your bats that you were feeling pretty good about tonight uh I mean you know I'll take them however I can get them um you know right now it's all about just helping the team win and um however I can do that I I want to and and so you know we were able to put up a lot of hits and you know make them cover a lot of innings and um you know get their starter out quick so uh you know really happy about that um you know I I think you just keep pounding at it each and every day and um you know it was nice for the boys to get the day off yesterday with some easy travel in we haven't really had a day off where we've had easy travel um and probably since you know All-Star break so um you know it was really nice to get that in and I think the boys felt refreshed with that and so They Came Out Swinging today Pete obviously starting it off you know with a huge home run right away it always is nice to jump out to a lead um and uh you know that was that was really all all that Shawn needed you know he was he was unbelievable today so um really really great team win and really proud of the guys Brandon uh you for years have gotten better and better incrementally left on left this year though you're putting up better numbers against lefties than righties another two hits against the Lefty today any reason why you think that is uh I mean I've worked really hard at it um you know I and and I hope that you know work you know sees some dividends and some results um but we worked really hard at it you know it is something that um you know we took pride in early on you know I wasn't getting play against left and you know I took that as okay how can I go get better at it and you know the guys the hitting coaches around here and and then also East kerto back in uh back in the cage you guys never even see him but you know he's one him and Aaron are one of the hardest workers on the team they're always throwing especially with JD now and uh you know he threw to me all the time and was trying to pitch to me and trying to you know get me out and you know would never said no and and and so you know a lot of credit goes to the people that were around me and and just willing to help um but you know I think I think just you know having a lot of work put in on it and uh seeing some dividends you know it's really helped and um and so you know hopefully that that success will continue Brandon appreciate the time as always aesome thanks Steve let's go Mets yes indeed so one of the things we know about brand nmo and he reiterated it right there he's worked really hard to to hit lefties better over the course of his career and two of his three hits came off a lefty Jordan Montgomery tonight so yes you put in the hard work but there still has to be the ability to do it and so why is he in your eyes what does he do against lefties that works for him um well look he's a guy we've seen that over the course of his career he gets hit by a lot of pitches why is that because he's not afraid to stay in and wait for the ball to be able to recognize pitches that's especially important Lefty and Lefty lefties have not grown up and spent a lot of time used to seeing left-handed pitchers where the ball goes away from them consistently and lefties often times will try to pitch lefties hard in and then get them uh chasing the soft away you saw Danny Young do it to Corbin Carroll tonight he goes hard in and then he throws the slider away or jock Peterson uh I I should say tonight and Brandon has done a very good job of making sure that he keeps that front side in and waits to recognize the pitch and so he does a lot of damage on the off speed from left-handers which is what their bread and butter is to get guys uh like him out and we saw it again tonight he fought off some tough pitches until he got the curveball in the strike zone against Montgomery he had seen a couple battled to 3-2 got the 3-2 breaking ball and was able to line it down the right field line it was very good quality of bat for Brandon and that's another thing when he's waiting back I think the lefties kind of get him tuned in overall at at times because he has to wait longer to be able to protect against that off speed pitch that slows him down a little bit and then he uses those quick hands and that sometimes can lock a guy in when you have some tough at bats like that all right 30 games to go now for the Mets in the regular season they get a win they're three and two now on this 10 game Road Trip let's check in on the Atlanta Braves the team the Mets are chasing in the Wild Card race taking on the twins out in Minnesota Atlanta had the lead 4 nothing going to the seventh inning and then in the eighth inning the Braves up 43 that's Trevor lck getting the little bloop out there into left center field that falls in Willie Castro scores from second of the game was tied four on the Xtra Innings we go top of the 10th inning Braves had a 5-4 lead Travis darno singles Luke Williams scores to make it a 6-4 game and then later in the inning Ramon laurano doubles to the Gap out there there Insurance runs those were important because the Braves get the win by a final of 86 Minnesota to G made it a game in the bottom of the 10th inning but the Braves hold on so let's get check right now wild card standings in the National League up to the moment and the Mets remain three games in back of Atlanta for that final wild card spot they're six in back of San Diego and six in back of Arizona now worth noting here San Francisco won they bid Milwaukee 54 and San Diego knocked off St Louis Carlos how would you describe now what sha maniah has turned himself into over this last month amazing uh incredible uh you got to give him credit man you know he's worked so hard throughout his career uh to put himself in this position and he feels like you know as we progress with the season he keeps getting better and better and it's usually not only the fast ball is just one pitch that is either working that night today was the Ching up U to go along with the fast B but man uh amazing what he's been able to do been huge for us the whole year uh and he's you know pretty much carry uh that rotation him along with seevi obviously uh but yeah huge um so I'm proud of him do you sense a different level of confidence in him too I know earlier in the season early in game sometimes he would struggle with you know nibbling a little bit as he's kind of reached this different level have you sensed him carrying himself differently yeah and not only we've seen it uh tonight no walks kept going right after hitters you know kept attacking you know getting ah getting ahead putting hitters away uh not afraid of contact uh so yeah you know watching him at the beginning of the year and just kind of that one inning where he used to lose it uh you know no on wood we haven't seen that he's just been in a he got you know he got on a rhythm here where it's like every time he takes the ball you feel good about your chances I know was that rally in F Qui was just s put the ball in play yeah I was going to say you know uh when you put the ball in play good thing happens you know defense going to have to make some plays and uh you know we caught some breaks there uh but we continue to put together some really good at bats and again with two strikes we continue to fight and and we put together you know we put the ball in play and uh we got big hits we needed ball found hold uh so yeah it was it was couple of three two counts that we won uh so it was good to see Carlos what what do you think the difference is Sean and the a traded to the Padres he he struggles then he signed with the Giants and he continued to struggle yeah I think you got to give him credit uh he went and uh he needed to work on whether it was the mechanics uh some of the pitches uh and you know the fast ball playing I think he dropped down his angle a little bit lately the sweeper he added that sweeper a pitch that he he wasn't as effective and now the change is becoming a real weapon so there's a lot of things uh going for him and he put himself in a really good position and putting us as a team in in in a position and as you pointed out he throws strikes I mean you always love a pitcher just throws strikes that's it you know uh when you throw strikes you get ahead you put them away and you let the defense do the work uh good things will happen uh when you when you get free passes uh you're going to be in trouble so and he's done that uh that's one of the reason why he's having the year he's having because he's limiting the walks when you play a big series like this like you know San Diego Ariz you won the first game San Diego you won first I how how much does that alleviate at least some pressure when when you wi win first game well look I mean a win is a win it's nice to to get the first one always but you know you treat every day every game every team you know and we're playing we continue to play good teams but our mentality doesn't change whether you get the first one uh whether you get the second one the third one our job is to continue to win games uh it helps the first one but look at the end of the day like I said uh our job is to continue to win baseball games here that's wi that got Alvarez was that the same finger that he had heard earlier sir no he got him more like on the outside of the hand on the top you know he's ear was the the thumb so uh we got lucky there because right away uh he didn't look too good so um yeah he's fine now I just check with him and he's fine well that was Carlos being asked about Francisco Alvarez got hit in the hand that catchers interference there on the Josh Bell at bat there in the fourth inning but again he shook it off stayed in the game and apparently at the moment all appears to be okay there I do want to a double back back to what the manager had to say and what Brandon nmo had to say about Shawn M how about how about Nimo talking about the fact that he hasn't seen a guy as incomeand strike out strike out strike out go back to the bench he compared him to Jacob deg Gro now listen he's not deg Grom but to hear that sort of headyy Praise tells you what Todd well what Brandon said is he hasn't seen that kind of Rhythm out of anybody since the gro Sak in the mound and I I agree with him andan is especially early on like his last outing he was almost perfect hit by pitch in a home run spoils that from a perspective of an overall line score tonight just about perfect and he has uh the Homer and the Corbin Carol Homer in the seventh inning that spoils the line but at the end end of the day up until that point he's attacking guys are getting three and four pitches uh per it bat to either put a ball in play or go back to the Dugout and that's what Brandon's talking about for him to continue to attack throwing strikes getting ahead of hitters and blowing guys away when they know what's coming uh a lot of the time is something that you saw out of deg Grom on occasion and right now you're just seeing sham manah in a really good stretch a very confident stretch and throwing more strikes I think that continues to be the theme Here strike after strike after strike gets it throws it not waiting between pitches and with the pitch clock uh keeping the pace of the game going it really looks like he's just grabbing it and throwing and grabbing and throwing it but having great results doing it 11 strikeouts no walks tonight as you're saying a good morning there's a speed bump on the front is for for m
