This New NFL Rule Could Be HUGE For The Chicago Bears

what's up Bears fans happy Sunday everybody my name is Harrison Graham welcome into Chicago Bears now we are less than 2 days away from initial 53 man rosters having to be set this is the time to you're not one of the 97,000 and change join the channel make it change hit that sub button all right so I've been waiting most of the day as some teams have started to make uh you know cut eight players here 10 players there I'd say a handful of teams have made you know eight plus Cuts today but Bear's not one of them so I thought we'd do a little bit of a different type of video today in relation to roster Cuts as this new NFL rule could be critical for all 32 teams but especially the Bears as they've had a couple of guys more than a couple of guys Bang up that I think could at some point play a role on this team this season if you forgot or were unaware of the NFL implemented a new rule this year that you can essentially carry two extra players uh through your initial 53-man roster that you place on IR to return later in the season with the old rules if you eled a player that you weren't willing to risk getting claimed by another team but they were hurt like good example kin Jenkins last year they had to carry him in the initial 53 then they placed him on IR then they were able to fill that roster spot but the issue with that was always well you might end up cutting a player that you like and could get claimed and then you never see that player again well now every team can can do that with two players place them on short-term IR with the designation to return uh later in the season I think week five because short-term IR is a minimum of four weeks so I'm going to look at some guys that I think the Bears could place under this designation and not risk them uh getting picked up on waiver claims the day after Tuesday rosters doe at 4:00 Eastern Tuesday 3:00 Central now one caveat to this rule you have to place these players under this designation on the day of roster cut so you won't see anything until Tuesday maybe it's within 24 hours so maybe you'll see it late Monday but most teams on Tuesday I think will place one to two players maybe not uh one or two for some teams but if you have injured guys up to two players under this designation so I've got eight guys I'm looking at that I think could fit this bill as a potential player to get C that uh you don't want to risk getting cut but you could place on this short-term IR essentially first one Colin Johnson Colin Johnson tore up the Hall of Fame game 66 220 I like his skill set I think he's a a pretty good option as like romad dun's backup as a big receiver that can block can high point the ball decent on special teams as well had a couple of nice special teams tackle in that game but he hasn't been seen since not sure what his injury is but we haven't seen him in practice or in a game since then um and I think right now when you're doing the math I don't think you could he would make your initial 53 man roster but I think he's a guy you could put on this short-term ir and by the the time he's eligible to return maybe you activate him because maybe there's an injury or somewhere or maybe you think he's better than one of your receivers uh that is on your 53 man roster at that point in the season so he's definitely a candidate I think for this uh because I don't think he'll make the in for 53 but I'd like to keep him around um assuming it's not a season ending injury I think he could be someone to get placed to designate to return how about another receiver Dante Pettis who missed some Camp early on came back balled out had two touchdowns against the Bengals but then got nicked up in practice last week and didn't play in the preseason finale not sure what his status is maybe he's close to being healthy but again he's right there on the bubble I thought he may have played his way on the right side of the bubble after that Cincy game but then he was out guys like DeAndre Carter got to play and Carter might need to make the initial 53 to be your punt returner because that position is still somewhat in doubt um so I think Dante could also be a player that the Bears like they don't necessarily want to risk uh him getting picked up off waivers although I don't think Colin Johnson or Dante Pettis it's like the end of the world if you lose those guys out of your building but if you want to put one of those guys on your short-term IR designated to return I would certainly be open to that all right before we get to our next candidate for this Today's Show Saturday was that uh it's an ankle injury um he was supposed to undergo an MRI we have not heard the results of those I don't know if the Bears are kind of keeping that Hush Hush he was the leading candidate to be your uh swing tackle after a pretty solid training camp um but then he got banged up in the last preseason game now if they cut him it saves over 3 million bucks but his injury could throw a wrench into that he might get some of that money now so I'm not sure quite how that works depending on the severity of the injury but um they've got the money to keep him anyway and if they feel like he's a good swing tackle option then uh keeping him in the building makes sense but if he's set to miss at least three or four weeks here if not longer putting him under this designation to return could make sense now if he's going to be back soon sooner rather than later like if he could play at least by say week two or something like that do you put Karan amagazi on this I know he was cleared and removed off the NFI list last week and returned to practice but he's not played the game yet he hasn't really done a Full Throttle practice up to this point you probably wouldn't want to put him out there in week two one or two of the Season just based on where he's at he hasn't played in a football game since October and that of course was at Yale this is already a jumping comp competition now technically for these type of plays they have to have an injury but you could easily kind of fudge that here and be like yeah uh he had a setback uh he's got to go on short-term IR pretty easy to work around some of that stuff um I don't think they'll do that I think they'll have him available and quite frankly I don't think boram's going to be ready the early part of the season so he would probably fit the bill better but if for some reason boram was ready maybe amagazi is a guy they would do this with since he's probably not ready to contribute early in the season anyway uh Ryan Bates we haven't seen him for a few weeks now um didn't sound like it was a serious injury but he's been in that week to week category for about three weeks now um I think at this point Coleman Shelton's going to be your week one starting center Nate Davis will probably be your week one starting guard um if Bates is still two three four weeks away do you just put him under this designation now if he's ready for week one or even week two uh based on your kind of projections from your medical staff then I would say you don't do this because I personally would like to have uh an option outside of Nate Davis that you feel good about at Right Guard just in case but uh he is certainly someone that uh could be an option here Jacob Martin pass rusher early in Camp had a really good camp and he's been out for about a month now haven't seen him at practice um you know obviously the Bears traded for Daryl Taylor um they have obviously contest Demarcus Walker we'll see you know Dom Rob uh Daniel Hardy who makes this team Austin Booker's obviously going to make it but this could kind of fit a little early season stash here where you place him designated to return and guys in the trenchers get hurt all the time by the time he's back there's probably going to be room for him anyway to activate him so I think he's a prime candidate for this how about zap Pickins flu sounded like this wasn't like a long-term injury but it he didn't NE necessarily say he'd be ready week one either and the Bears traded for Chris Williams the defensive tackle from the Browns a player that uh overlapped with Eber flu in Indianapolis for two years in 2020 and in 2021 you don't do that unless a you're pretty concerned about the position which I think they were regardless of picking status but B I don't get the feeling pickings is ready week one so maybe he goes on this list as well how about Patrick scales your Long Snapper we haven't seen him in a while um you know if he's going to miss two or three games uh you can't cut him cuz his contract's fully guaranteed this year then you'd have to bring him back anyway because you're so at that point you're almost paying him twice uh but um if he's going to miss like if I'm managing this roster and I I think my Long Snapper is going to miss at least two games well I might be willing to accept him missing four go with Cameron lions or a different Long Snapper if they don't think Lions is good enough and and then activate scales for week five kind of gives you a a way to get an extra player on your 53 and have a different option for game days at another spot maybe you go heavier at corner you add an extra tight end or something like that so that could be an option they consider and then lastly Noah Su I know Su returned and played in the final preseason game but had a bad Miss tackle I don't think he played that well um they could kind of go the amagazi route that I mentioned where they kind of yeah he's got a he's got a hamstring issue and just kind of budget and put him on this list because I'll be honest I don't think he's a top five linebacker on this team right now but you probably don't want to cut him just yet as a fifth round pick from last year like I could see a a young team not contending this year just taking a chance on him right with a waiver claim so you know if you want to keep Mike a Baskerville because you think he can contribute but you don't want to move on from Su maybe short-term IR stash him and uh potentially activate him later in the season so those are some guys that I think fit the bill of this new NFL rule which I think you'll see teams take advantage of this uh could make waiver wire claims the next day a little less chaotic uh because some guys will get protected but uh obviously still will'll have plenty of activity around the league all right name a player or players up to two that you would like to see the Bears utilize this new rule on and kind of protect
