Reaction to Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon Comments At Training Camp Press Conference

running back Joe Mixon popped up to the podium a couple days ago and I have yet to watch this so I will raw dog this with you and I'll just edit out any of the answers or questions that I just flat out don't like first question was how are you liking it and how comfortable are you I feel like I'm very comfortable in it obviously still little bit of things that I gotta um uh get in a Playbook on but obviously that comes with the install obviously we haven't fully uh went over everything but I felt very comfortable where I'm at I think that my uh role in the offense is uh very unique and uh I'm definitely embracing everything that comes with it so in terms of getting to know the offense a couple things to remember one Zack Taylor the coach of the Bengals did spend a couple of years with the Rams before he took the head coaching job but he'd been a bunch of other places before that so in terms of terminology and everything else like that there's probably some similarities to the Shanahan McVey lineage as far as this Texans offense versus the Bengals last year the Texans are going to be way way much more quarterback under Center and those are the types of runs that Joe Mixon thrives at last year the Bengals turned into just almost an exclusively shotgun football team Mixon is a lot more of an old school big bruising dude that with a head of steam puts those linebackers in a bind you can break tackles all of that and I don't think he's as suited for running out of the gun Zach Moss who the Bengals brought into Place Joe Mixon is the exact opposite Zach Moss tends to be better out of the gun so that's that's the explanation for why the Bengals aside from salary cap considerations and everything like that moved on from Joe Mixon but when you look at some of the stats that show Mixon had dropped off in some ways I can see a lot of that being an issue with him fitting into the scheme and the way it evolved last year we'll have plenty of time to talk about that when the real game start next to you was asked about working alongside jir Jordan the sixth round pick at running back out of Louisville yeah um draw Jordan I mean he's a good player um obviously he's young uh he's learning he getting around and he's showing him the ropes his vets I think that he's been taking everything in uh the best as he can and obviously when he gets out on the field he works hard and um obviously as a you know texting staff that that's what they love and appreciate I I don't know if he said jaar or Gerard but you you'll get called the proper name when you earn it rookie okay jar Jordan much different type of running back than Joe Mixon he's 510 190 not as blisteringly fast as you want a smaller guy to be but he runs tough and he's kind of got buildup speed so I'm very intrigued by him especially as a returner because with a new kickoff return rules they're probably going to be used running backs a lot more and jard Jordan has looked pretty good even as we're all still we're out there watching these new kickoff drills and just we're all confused the players are confused the coaches are confused I'm typically naturally confused but even more so watching this drill but jar Jordan might have an Avenue onto the team if he shows aptitude at that where everybody's everybody Frank Ross included are trying to learn exactly how all this is going to work Cody suits then ask basically are you ready for some heavy usage lots of snaps on this team uh yes um obviously I feel like uh with the work that I put in this offseason I train as hard as I possibly can honestly harder than I've ever did ever before uh leading up to this moment and I feel uh very confident in and you know like I said the role that I will have in this offense and um I'm going Embrace everything that come with it like I said I did all the work in offseason and uh you know come season that's when I know what to pay off he's had 237 or more carries four times in his career he's 28 years old this year which is starting to get up there by running back standards I hope that the Texans are good enough at the running back position and good enough up front that they don't rely on him getting that many carries you know he's certainly built like a guy that he that can he's he's built much differently than Devin single ter for instance but really I I think a lot of it just hinges on Damen Pierce and how well he adapts to everything and can Damen Pierce take some of that workload off of him it's funny running back we don't get into discussions anymore about running backs the way we do with receivers about like oh how you gonna how you going to divvy up all the touches the the day of a veteran running back not wanting a guy behind him to get any carries at all like those have long since sailed Fred Taylor and Frank Gore and all those other guys paved the way to show these these younger guys these young old running backs that all right man look you just stretch this thing out as long as possible you don't want to get the crap beat out of you you're basically going over Niagara Falls in a barrel every time you step out on the field just just lean on Daman a little bit lean on Daman lean on jair lean on a gbo next he was asked about his adjustment to working with this offense compared to where he'd been in Cincinnati like you know I think a lot of offenses kind of similar um uh the main thing is learning the terminology um that's the biggest thing and once you learn that and obviously you know what comes with the protections I think after that I mean that's all she wrote so I mean as long as I keep you know honing in on the little things and details I feel like I'll be in great shape when you've got a big body guy like that it's nice when he cares about pass blocking which Joe Mixon always has so that's nice as far as reading the blocking that was one thing that I started to see evidence of improvement in the second half of last season but on a lot of Zone runs you know the running back is reading for instance say the offensive tackle independent how that tackle is playing the defensive end or on inside Zone how the the guard is playing the defensive tackle that's when he's either going to try to take it outside or hit the cutback and one thing that the offensive lineman need to do a really good job of is making it as clear a picture to the running back as possible because if it's a murky look then the running back is going to hesitate that much more and that just you lose that fine tuning it does look like a more cohesive unit so far this year they they've been in no pads so I'm not going to read too much into that except that this time last year it looked way more disjointed whereas this year they're moving in lock step they're they're looking choreographed and it's looking closer to what we used to see with Chris Meers and Wade Smith and Dwayne Brown and those guys so so far so good got a lot more training camp to slog through before we get to where we feel awesome about it next question another comparison question how would you compare this offensive line to the Bengals offensive line oh we got some chance for some headline porn here yeah um I mean you know I had I had a really really great guys in Cincinnati my whole seveny year 10 years um that I did there um but I mean the biggest thing that pretty much stands out to me more than anything is um we got uh All Pro lineman here obviously um like LT um Pro Bowl guy and he's been all pro before I definitely feel like with the the way that these guys work they the way that they attack their job I definitely feel like um it'll benefit me uh in a in a in a great greater scale I think that slowick the way that he's dialing things up I truly feel like you know he's going to do whatever he can to um get all his Playmakers the ball I mean I've been in a situation before where uh a lot of people have to get the ball as well and you know sometimes some people it don't go their way that day you know what I'm saying but at the same time I feel like we got a lot of unselfish guys a lot of um Great Character guys and I think that they do a hell of a job you know attacking the day and um wanting to be better it'd be tough to compare the Bengals offensive line over the course of seven years to any other team because the Bengals were in transition for a lot of that and they had to they had to make multiple stabs and improving the offensive line I do think that in terms of quarterbacks like Joe burrow is awesome don't get me wrong but Joe burrow also is not afraid to take a sack he's gotten a lot better at it but that that is something that wears on offensive lineman if your quarterback's not great at avoiding sacks then you st you're getting charged with sacks that another quarterback would have gotten rid of that's one thing that you know you can't measure it or anything but I think playing as a as an offensive lineman for CJ stoud it's nice to know that he's really good at getting rid of the ball quickly I mean he's he's almost the exact opposite of what David Carr was as a rookie when you talk about high draft pick quarterbacks for the Texans I just I just know from being on that team that offensive linemen weren't always all that enthused about you know being pointed to as the reason for the Texans breaking a Sachs allow record when your Young quarterback had a lot to do with that and that's not a knock on David he was just young and didn't know any better for those first couple years but CJ figured it out Fair very very quickly set a record damn it okay the next question I had a hard time hearing it but I believe it's something about the league transitioning in away from older running backs okay I had a hard time hearing this one but I believe it was a question about the league transitioning away from older running backs like Joe Mixon who's gonna be 28 years old he's he's a he's damn near Methuselah can we name names name no I'm asking like no I'm I mean I guess it's a narrative to y'all but I mean the running backs that I see that's close to 28 30 31 32 they balling right now so I mean my host is high you know what I'm saying and um I know what you know what the type of player I am and I'm not here to speak for everybody else but in terms of me uh I know for a fact as long as I'm in great position to win like it's it's going to be night and day compared to how I was in Cincinnati you know what I'm saying so uh like I say I got I'm very optimistic with this offense will be ran how it be used in this offense and um in terms of the whole running back narrative I mean like I said everybody that I see as I say about like 26 to about 32 right now like all them dudes is balling man so um you know shout out to the running backs and I hope you know y'all have hell of a season everybody do their thing for real in terms of the older guys and let's use 27 as the cut off age because that's what Joe Shane of the Giants on the Hard Knocks off season keeps sighting over over and over again is it after age 27 these guys are trash if we look at total rushing yards from last year Christian mcaffrey was 27 he was first Derrick Henry was 29 he was second then you got to scroll down to Joe Mixon at eighth leading rusher at the age of 27 then Raheem moster coming in strong as the 10th leading rusher at age 31 so four out of the top 10 guys were 27 or older I do think that man the the averages and everything else would tell you that yeah it gets riskier and riskier and that's why the contracts just because of that inherent injury risk and decline in production don't keep up not to mention just that running backs can't have the same effect on the game that they used to but I do think guys fall into two categories and maybe more than not can't really succeed after age 27 but there are some guys going to just as recently is Frank Gore who do incredibly well past the age of 30 Derrick Henry obviously one of those guys Christian mcaffrey just got a new contract and was a leading rusher in the NFL at age 27 so for where the Texans are right now when they still have a quarterback on his rookie contract you can afford the luxury of paying some respectable money to an aging running back and that's where you saw a lot of the free agency and trade activity this off season it was teams that have a realistic shot at the Super Bowl by and large that spent money on running backs whereas teams like the Giants who just need to improve their overall roster it doesn't make as much sense to take a gamble on pay and saquan Barkley at the age of 27 especially with his injury history whereas for Philadelphia it makes more sense now based on how they played at the end of last season I don't know how that'll look in hindsight but right this moment I don't judge them because they have those tools in place that a running back can be one of those things to actually just get them over the top so so far so good with Joe mix and I like everything I've seen of him out there athletically he looks great physiologically I'm kind of scared of him not scared as a football fan like scared if I if I pissed him off or something the real fun stuff starts when the pads come on probably won't see Joe Mixon a lot in the preseason games but I do think he's a great great great resource for Damen Pierce jar Jordan and all the other younger guys I'm Seth Payne played for the Texans a long long time ago uh now I do radio on Sports Radio 610 and I have this YouTube Channel please like
