really well but they weren't able to get the timely hits and as it happens they didn't get a ton of hits here in the followup but they got the hits when they needed them and they got them from a couple of unlikely sources they did I mean what a what a game from Adam Duvall after not playing for a while what a great Series this was I mean obviously it feels good when you come out of the winning side of it but just three really well played game really well pitched games I think if you're a brav fan you gota feel like maybe you probably should have swep this series but either way to come out with a series win and again I feel like pitching definitely was just and this is again the recipe for this braid team the pitching was outstanding it's just can you get enough of those timely hits can you score three four runs I feel like you do that you're gonna have the chance to win a lot of games the rest of the way with the pitching staff yeah if they're able to keep doing what they've been doing and Spencer schellenbach has been a big part of that he led the way here pitching into the seventh inning another strong start for him nine more punch outs it seemed like you know this kid just every time he goes out there he just impresses you with what I would call his pitch ability and the fact that he is evolved as a big league pitcher in what amounts to what a little more than a dozen starts now it's just crazy to see the Leaps and Bounds that this kid has taken knowing that he had the arm talent and I think he had a couple of good pitches in his Arsenal it's just gotten better and better and sharper and sharper for that matter he has and again it's just it's incredible it's one of the better stories for this Braves team this year what he's done just where he's come from and you know the fact he was a reliever in college wasn't even a starter in college not too long ago had Tommy John surgery just 65 professional Innings last last year and then just what he's done this season and the the steps that he has made like you mentioned not just as a professional but he's made this season at the big league level it's just truly incredible he's fun to watch and you know does it against this Phillies team again a really good Phillies lineup I mean I know maybe they haven't been clicking as much here lately but you're still talking about a schwarber a Turner a Harper who all braids pitching just shut down in this series so Schell andb just continue to be impressive as he was in this one again maybe one of his better outings I know he gave up that run there in the seventh but again he he has a list of those now of just really dominant good outings that we've seen out of him yeah and considering I think the importance of this game to take a series and the fact that the Braves had faith in him I know we talked a little bit about the fact they they give him the off day do you want to go Chris Sail in the finale and the Braves they resisted doing that I mean Ronaldo Lopez coming back made that a little bit of a different decision here but I think the Braves have a lot of faith swell and boach who I just wanted to check has made 14 Big League Starts Now Incredible to see what he has become for this club and you're right and we'll talk about a little bit more later definitely one of the best maybe the best stories for the Braves as far as success stories are concerned from an individual standpoint here in 2024 enough timely hitting in this game behind him to get this Victory from different sources as well Adam Duval drew the rare start had a big home run as it as it ended up it was the most important run I guess or one of the three most important runs for being technical about it but technically it was the winning Run for the Braves Matt olon had to go ahead knock in this one Gio or shella as well and the Braves were able to get just enough there offensively speaking to scratch out a win and to do it 24 hours after a day in which they frustratingly couldn't do it that had to feel at least pretty good in addition to obviously winning this series like not going to sit here and try to tell you this was a great offensive performance in itself either you had a plenty of chances especially early in that game the first four Innings had a leadoff runner on in every inning and you did score a couple but it just again like the game before that it just felt like you had an opportunity this game should have been over after five innings you should you dominated the first half of this game and then it felt like you had to hang on and a lot of that just because the offense not able to come up with that big hit but again everybody in the lineup had a hit every starter at least except for Aria in this one that's great to see we already talked about Duvall and him just you know coming into the lineup after not playing much I mean what a what a call by Brian Snicker who I think had a great game just you know putting putting the ball in there having the faith and confidence in him to come back after not playing for a while thought he managed to Bullpen well in this one and you know it's still just that struggle for this offense and look the Phillies threw a lot of good pitchers in this series too but you just look at the amount of base runners that the Braves had especially in these last two games you really would love to see them push a couple of more runs across but you know either way they're able to get the win and you know as I've said multiple times now these are the types of games I think you're going to have to play the rest of the way and you're going to have to find a way to scratch scratch across a run or two here or there throughout and just hope that that pitching sta continues what it's been doing yeah a really great call by putting Adam Duval in this lineup he had three of the Braves 10 hits in this one three hit game for Adam Duval those have been pretty rare as it as it turns out in fact I believe he came into this game what one for his last 29 so to say he needed a day like this will be the understatement of the show and I'll try to hold on to that and and make sure that I don't say anything else that eclipses it but all jokes aside I mean it's been a rough year for Adam Duvall I know there's just you know really no way to slice it in which he'd be happy with his performance so far in the season but Jake there's still a lot of opportunity if you find the right moments for players to step in and do some big things and we'll see if Adam Duval does have a role to play at some point or at some moments for the Braves moving forward as they try to get this whole Outfield situation figured out and look if Forge Solair is healthy he probably doesn't get this opportunity and you know if that's the case you got Solair in the lineup so that's a positive too but you know for Adam Duvall it's been a rough season for him he's probably had been asked to do more than you would have hoped for coming into the season anyway where he was expected to be a short side platoon player and you know he comes in against the Lefty has a big game and he's still capable of this I believe if you utilize him in the right spots the right situations obviously you know being able to to stay in a good mindset with year that you've had and to be able to come off the bench like this to start a game against the Lefty you know it's the one thing that you're really hoping that he can get done for you at this point and again you're just you don't have a lot of options especially with Solair injured and for him to come through is just great it's got to feel great for Adam dual to be able to still contribute to this team with the season that he's had so I love to see that obviously got the what ended up being the game-winning home run there are an absolute blast so great for Adam Duval who's a great guy I mean I think most bra fans are going to think of him fondly in his time in Atlanta no matter how the rest of this season ends up but certainly you know for him and he'll tell you it's it's been a rough year for him so just good to see him with everything that's happened to finally get this opportunity Snicker to give him this opportunity and him to make the most of it yeah I mean Adam Duval you won't find I think a nicer guy and and there's not really a problem in terms of this club having some of these good guys that are easy to root for the problem has been a lot of injuries a lot of inconsistency lot of struggles it just hasn't looked the way that many players have wanted it to look but you have Adam Duval stepping up in this game the big home run important for him Matt Olson of course has had his own struggles to get himself going in this one with a runs scoring double was a big opportunity for him to step in in this series and do a little bit of something for his club and how about Gio orella again he continues to show that he knows how to start a double play on Trey Turner which is pretty impressive and he also has shown that he can do a couple things with the bat his ground rule double really it ended up costing the Braves a run because it it did not stay in the ballpark going over that short wall out in left field had it not that would have been a little bit more Breathing Room in this one so Jake I guess even when the Braves are getting a hit with a runner and scoring position they're still not finding the optimal place to put it I don't know really how you how you categorize a ground rule double but every once in a while you know with the runner at first obviously that can come back to bite and it did for the Braves in this one yeah it just feels like the Braves can't catch a break at all this season whether it's injuries or just you know foul balls that are are just going foul it's just it seems like it's been the case all year long you finally do get a hit like you said and it it bounces over and what probably would have been an easy score from first for Adam Duval who can still run pretty well uh but yeah Gio orella you know big hit tonight obviously to knock in a run there some great defense they almost turned that play that double play in the first inning too that would have kept a run off the board that was a really good turn by him the throw was a little off but just the ability to get rid of that ball quickly to even make it close at first base uh you know he's done a really great job there with mirfield too with that turn at second base obviously is really good but Matt olssen you know he got the big hit in this one and he also got robbed of potentially a hit in that first inning as well a ball that he crushed 108 miles per hour Bryson STS a really good second baseman almost made an incredible play against Michael Harris in this game too but they turned a nice double play themselves to keep the braids off the board yeah the frustrations with these double plays especially on hard hit balls I mean there's a lot of that going around this year but for Matt Olsson ultimately able to come through with a big hit to help out in this 3-2 Victory we still got a lot more to talk about on this edition of the Braves postcast we'll dive into what was going so well for Spencer schellenbach and really the entire Braves pitching staff as they were able to keep the Phillies in neutral and keep them under control in this game in picking up this 3-2 win we will of course take a look ahead to the series against the Washington Nationals it starts on Friday all of that is coming good one for the Braves especially on the pitching side where Spencer schellenbach was leading the way Braves with three runs on 10 hits no errors they left seven men on base Atlanta improving to 68 and 59 on the year so once again pushing their way up towards nearly 10 games over 500 which if you've watched this club all season I don't know that it's necessarily felt like that but here they are Phillies two runs just three hits no errors for them they left only three men on base just precious few opportunities for them Philadelphia is 74 and 53 now after dropping two out of three to the Braves loser Christopher Sanchez is nine- n Spencer swelling boach meanwhile five- six as he picks up the Victory and a save goes to Rice glaz is his 28th of the year and we're going to talk about Mr eaus here shortly um Spencer swach though six and two3 innings the three hits two earned runs one walk and nine strike outs he just continues to deliver an excellent performance I still think against a tough team whether or not they're struggling as you mentioned earlier a lot of big bats still in that lineup a lot of big names guys that can hurt you and have come through in clutch spots against the Braves I don't think anybody needs any reminding of that this was I don't know just the latest in a string of impressive starts from the rookie right-hander we've talked about it almost every time we've done a postcast that Spencer has pitched it's that mound presence it's that word we keep using look this is a big game for the Atlanta Braves whether you know they get back in the division or not as I've I've said every every one of these postcast and I'll say it again now the Braves just need to win games I don't care who it's against but certainly against your rival team that you know wants to try to kick you while you're down it's a big game it was a huge spot and for Spencer schellenbach a rookie to come in and Pitch the way that he did and just just looking complete control of this game he gave up that run in the first inning but just completely shut them down after that into that seventh inning and that seventh inning look he made a mistake to Bryson St with two strikes that cutter was supposed to be in he left it middle of the plate and almost made the play too very athletic guy and then the next batter he throws a fast ball right down the middle of JT Ro Muto and this is where I get back to Brian Snicker thought it was the right call there I wanted him to get to that seventh but you make two mistakes like that in the seventh inning I thought it was the right call to go ahead and get him out of there with a chance to not lose that game uh so I thought that was the absolute right call but schwellenbach just again just masterful performance I mean I think that's really what you can call it here you get 20 whiffs on 51 swings that's almost a 40% whiff rate against that Phillies lineup and just mixing it all in the fast ball slider curveball through some really good Splitters in this one it's just you know it's a it's a great arsenal from this kid as we've say almost every time just continuing to get better and grow each time out but I just think you know in the moment and this game like we said I mean I was I figured that they would skip him to save the Innings go with Chris S in this game in this series against your division Rivals but no they stick with Spencer schellenbach and he just absolutely delivers in a big game in a key series to help the Braves win yeah and he does it so efficiently as well even when he came out I know that in the seventh inning things started to get a little bit sideways for him but only 94 pitches 65 of those for strikes he just pounds the strike zone and that shouldn't surprise anybody nine more strike outs only one walk in this one that seems to be the ratio these days for Spencer swell and boach about nine or 10 to one on strikeouts to walks I mean I don't need to tell you but I will anyway just how good that is how impressive it is and you know there were a lot of things in in looking when you size up prospects and you know this Jake because you kind of delve down there on the farm prior to the season to kind of see you know what the state of this farm system was and who might be able to make an impact for the Braves and when they might be able to do that I don't know that anybody necessarily was overlooking Spencer swellen boach but I don't feel like anybody expected him to get here this soon and to have this kind of success and these kind of numbers in the major leagues it has been I think as I was alluding to earlier flat out like the the most surprising and best development for the Braves this year for a single performance yeah certainly the story that nobody I think saw coming like you look at maybe the best story certainly Chris C is up there with what he's done for his comeback but just right a story that nobody saw coming Spencer like has be up there like and I was high on them coming into the year I had him ranked fourth in my uh Prospect rankings for the Braves I was really impressed at what I saw but I just figured there's no way they're going to rush this kid up to the big leagues with very little professional experience very little experience of a starting pitcher but I should know better by now with this Braves team if they feel like you're ready and you get to at least that double a level you're just a phone call away so again it's you know never really thought he'd get this opportunity and get it for this long and look his first couple of outings were a bit shaky but you saw what he could do in those outings and we you know the braids were able to stick with him and see that potential and it's really paying off now so again just a great season for Spencer swelling boach and looks like a bright future yeah I mean quick learner as well just continuing to find ways to make himself that much better by learning at the big league level as we talked about getting that on the job training and and I say all this and add a little bit of context to why I think this is kind of the best development for the Braves is Chris S has a great res has great numbers you're not surprised to see Chris S be who he is I mean getting healthy was a big thing for him Marcel Ozuna having an MVP caliber season but this is a guy who was coming off a year in which he hit 40 homers and drove in 100 runs so the fact that he's doing this is great it's not the biggest surprise in the world I think this is maybe the most surprising development of 2024 Spencer swelling box rise to grab a spot in the Braves rotation and seemingly run away and hide with it as well now we need to talk about Rell glaciers a little bit more he slammed the shut in this game what an incredible run he's been on I know how good he was when he came over after the trade deadline in 2022 he was solid last year as well and no knocking that either but since June 18th 23 Innings four hits one run it was unearned by the way two walks and 29 strikeouts he punched out the side to to uh shut the Phillies out in this game or close the Phillies out in this game and get his 28th save this Jake I think to make a long story short is about as good is I've seen rice glac just look and this outing in particular a Phillies team that has gotten his number or had his number in the past specifically Bryce Harper to come out there and not just shut the door on a very one-run game but to do so in that fashion striking out the side and getting Bryce Harper and very interesting in this outing no change UPS thrown you heard John Smoltz talk about that on the broadcast and that fast ball was really good and when you his change up is its best pitch I mean there is no secret about that but Phillies team that's seen him a lot that's had his number I'm sure they're thinking about that change up has to be in the back of their mind and look Iggy can still throw hard I mean it's still can get 95 96 97 and I just thought that was a great game plan by him and Shawn Murphy behind the plate that seemed like it really caught those Phillies hitters off guard yeah and maybe they were just so busy looking for the secondary that you know the putaway pitch that you know sometimes the old fast ball is the one that will work for you especially when you can heat it up when you can locate it when you can put it where you want to that as they say will play I don't want to pass over Pierce Johnson in this game either as he came on got a big strike out to end the seventh inning get out of a threat got into and out of a jam in the eth I know he was probably frustrated about that walk especially it looked like there was a Mis call in the midst of all of that but as true professionals do he was able to put that aside and find his way out of it Braves pitching staff 14 strikeouts against the Phillies who got just three hits and had just the three walks two of those by Johnson and one from Spencer schellenbach but precious few opportunities for a Phillies offense that you know as much as we've talked about the Braves roller coaster ride especially here in the second half Jake the Phillies have also stumbled quite a bit and the Braves now have figured out how to win what six of the first nine meetings between these two clubs with four more on Deck next week it's interesting to see what happens obviously when these two clubs aren't going head-to-head but could be a fascinating final five six weeks of the Season too could be I mean the more you look at it I think as a brav fan you kind of just it makes you more upset that you lost some of those series that you did and weren't able to take advantage of this this Phillies downturn that they're in it's still going to be a pretty big hill for the Braves to climb but you do have four more games against them you're you're six back so you're certainly not out of it but you got to play really good baseball the rest of the way and hope that the Phillies kind of continue the way that they've been playing here lately but it is interesting you look at the head-to-head matchups this year and the raids have won all three series against them so far you do that again in Philadelphia and then you do got a really good chance going into the month of September yeah and we're going to talk about this coming up I mean the struggles against the Washington Nationals have probably not helped the Braves cause either this season and that as they say is a teaser we will pay that off here shortly a lot more to get to on the Braves postcast we will talk about that national series coming up we will also talk about the potential return of a big bat that the Braves would very much like to have back at the top of the order his name is Jorge Solair we haven't seen him start a game in a week a little more than a week now will Friday finally be that day that is coming your way next on the Braves from anywhere with just a few clicks at supplyhouse.com well let me take a deep breath and get us into this final segment Jake as de Braves would like to take a deep breath after taking this serious from the Phillies I'm sure as well closing this out they got the great pitching they took the two out of three now the question is and this is not a trick question can they figure out the Washington Nationals a club that is six and two against the Braves this year you can file that I think as we were just talking about under reasons why Atlanta is trailing in the NL East and maybe not exactly where they want to be in the playoff hunt in general you it's been the problem with the Braves all year long they've played really well against good teams they have a winning record against teams above 500 it's these types of series that they've really let get away from them series that that on paper they should win and you know you got good momentum coming out of this Philly series look if you play the way that you did against that Phillies team you should sweep this series I mean it was a wellplayed game you had plenty of base runners obviously you want to come away with some more clutch hits but you're hoping against you know the Nationals pitching that you're able to do that more so than you were against that Billy's pitching uh but you know obviously if you pitch the way that you did you're gonna have a chance to win every game but I feel like if you just keep that same intensity up from that series and you continue that against this Nationals team you should be able to get it done but they haven't all year to your point yeah it's crazy when you look at these two teams would you believe that as they come into Friday's game the Braves and the Nationals have scored the exact same amount of runs this year 545 the difference is the Braves run differential is positive at plus 52 the Nationals a negative 62 obviously the Braves pitching has been the differentiator between these two clubs among other things this year but there is some good young Talent there I know that we'll talk about the pitching match up McKenzie Gore has been struggling that's a really nice long-term building block good piece for them he's shown flashes of what he can be obviously there's going to be some growing pains for some of these young players James Wood as well as CJ Abrams I think has looked great at times this year as well just looks like an exciting young player that they can build around and we'll see if they're going to be able to do that moving forward it's just they're not quite there yet and amazingly I don't know if this is just pure happen stance or just the way it works is this going to be a series in which the Braves and Nationals play and we don't see Patrick corbman I was about to say the Braves just missed him as he pitched on Thursday actually threw a really good game in that one against the Colorado Rockies but yeah that's the one the Braves are are looking for when they play the Nationals that is the one guy that they have traditionally gotten after pretty well yeah I mean most of the league has gotten after Patrick Corbin pretty well since about 2020 but uh we'll we'll leave that aside for now he did help him win a World Series in 2019 I'll always have that as I've heard somewhere Flags fly forever and it seems like the Nationals have been paying him forever as well for that one uh now a big question better question and more important question will we finally see Jorge Solair back in the Outfield it does sound like it talked to Brian Snicker before the game it seems like it's been trending that way you and I talked about this the last couple of games it's a good sign that he's been pinch hitting clearly the Braves feel like he's close and Solair had indicated prior to the beginning of the Philly series that and not the news you wanted to hear three days ago but Friday was probably the target return date so when the Braves tweet that lineup on Friday or whatever we call it now will Jorge Solair be at the top is a good question for us to ask it would be great to have him back in there to help this lineup get a little bit more Punch Yeah I think he'll be in there it sounds like he kind of ramped up his intensity of running on Thursday as well so that's great to see again it's you got to be able to to play The Outfield but hey good news you got Michael Harris back in center field and he can probably cover most of it himself over there so that does help out a little bit but would love to get H Solair bat back in the lineup he was just starting to kind of heat up with the Atlanta Braves since coming over so get him back in there I'm assuming they put him back at at the top kind of moves everybody back down a spot deepens the lineup a little bit more and help get that offense going because certainly you know they getting those base runners just need those big hits and Braves fans know J Solair can deliver those yeah and you know how tough It's been now that the Braves have been without Solair who's just nursing the hamstring injury then you have the Austin Riley news happen so I think that at this point I know they've been using Michael Harris in a leadoff spot but it makes sense to me to put Solair up top maybe Harris in the two spot and then let the rest of your order kind of play out from there there because you pretty much get to do that righty Lefty thing the Braves seem to love if you play it out that way at least through the first four spots yeah makes sense there like I said and soir it's what you got him for you got him to be that Ronald Cuna Jor light at the top of the the lineup who can bring that power and that onbase ability so I think it makes sense and you get to move Michael Harris you know you move him down in the two spot or move him down a little bit further probably put him in the two spot but would merf obviously coming off a really good series he's looked good and been able to get on base and bring some of that speed as well but again you more options and obviously that's what you want if you're Brian Snicker have more good options that you feel comfortable with putting in the lineup wow I'm going to make you say that again are you saying that the Braves have options in their lineup that they may actually like and have some pieces to move around this is breaking news no but in all seriousness it was a good series for Whit Maryfield and clearly he brings a speed Dynamic to the game as well Ramon Lano has swung the bat pretty well he's gotten some opportunity up near the top of the order so it's just going to be as many guys as they can get rolling but getting Solair back in there is a huge piece particularly in light of losing Austin Riley for what could be the rest of the regular season at the very least and though he's optimistic about getting back at some point but suffice it to say he's not walking through that door anytime soon uh the Braves welcome the Nationals to town for that three-game series and they hit the road where they'll face the Twins and then the Phillies for four to close out the month Chris S though he's been doing it all year long he gets the ball in game one against Washington can he get the Braves off on the right foot against fellow Lefty McKenzie Gore sale 14 and three with a 262 erra has been at or near the lead of all the Triple Crown categories in the National League as far as pitchers are concerned McKenzie Gore meanwhile started out I thought really great this season has struggled lately seven and 11 with a 462 erra now but an interesting battle between two left-handers who know how to miss a few bats and McKenzie Gore he still has that strikeout stuff he's really struggled with command in the second half of the season that's really hurt him and kept him from going deep into games and obviously giving up a lot of runs and that's what we hope happens on Friday night and look we talked about it earlier the fact that you didn't skip Spencer swellen baching this one and go with Chris Sail now you get to open up this series after a series win with Chris Sale and that's just great to see we've talked about a lot normally when Chris s's pitching here lately it's coming after a loss and he's trying to end a losing streak or get the Braves back on track now you got Chris S with a chance to kind of continue that momentum and hopefully you know get another Series win at home against the Nationals so absolutely love that love this matchup for the Atlanta Braves good chance to win the first game of this series yeah Braves I believe it's sail and then Morton and Ronaldo Lopez in this series so throwing three very good pitchers there maybe that was the whole design is hey we we figured out how to beat the Phillies we got to beat the Nationals we need Chris S to lead the way either way game one of three it happens on Friday night at truis Park 7:20 pm first pitch between the Braves and the Nationals the sale faces Gore in that opener that's going to bring us to the end of this edition of the Braves postcast as always we appreciate you riding along with us make sure that you're subscribed to locked on Sports Atlanta here on YouTube and locked on Braves wherever you get your podcast Braves take two out of three from the Phillies they'll get
