Locked On Braves POSTCAST: Atlanta Braves' 12-0 victory tempered by injury scare for Reynaldo Lopez

you are a locked on Braves postcast part of locked on Sports Atlanta your team every day hello and welcome into the Braves postcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day Grant mccy and Jake mastriani with you after a big win for the Braves who had a much needed bounceback effort in the first of a brief two- game series of the Washington Nationals in route to a 12 nothing Victory a route as it is called and there haven't been too many of those this season so that's always caus for celebration we'll have a lot to talk about offensively especially when you consider what we were talking about 24 hours ago unfortunately though this game as have so many others this season has given the Braves yet another injury scare that we're going to have to discuss on this edition of the show as well we get into all of that here in just a moment before we do though hit that Thumbs Up Button subscribe to lock on Sports Atlanta on YouTube and locked on Braves wherever you get your fanduel.com to get started well Jake I mean yesterday we were trying to figure out I mean how many ways can you tell the same story for what has been the offensive struggles of this Braves team we got quite the opposite today the Braves jumped on the Nationals early they beat up on McKenzie Gore they scored a whole bunch of runs but unfortunately at the end of the day all we get to really kind of focus on on here in a lot of ways is what's going to be going on with Ronaldo Lopez who had to leave the game after just one inning due to a shoulder issue the cruelty of 2024 just continues for the Atlanta Braves you finally get a huge offensive output you finally get that big blowout win and here we are dreading what is the outcome of another injury to a very significant player your third best starter in the rotation right now a rotation that's carried you and that's all anybody can really think about even after a 12 nothing win where the off puts up a bunch of runs yeah I mean it's difficult to predict this team from day to day there's been a lot of frustrations built into their struggles with scoring runs and they like today you can't even enjoy a win because of the Lopez injury in a lot of ways but let's put that to the side we will get into it of course and it doesn't sound like it's a worst case scenario but of course we don't know the extent of it yet there more tests have to be run for him great night though for the offense Michael Harris Homer twice Atlanta piled up 12 runs just one shy of the Season High Jake I don't know how many you had on your over under or otherwise for how many runs you expected the Braves to score after getting shut out and losing one to nothing yesterday but uh how's 12 runs hit you yeah would not have have predicted that I mean we've been talking about can you just give me three or four runs and that obviously would have been enough even after losing Lopez you pitch a shut out that's how good this pitching staff has been uh but yeah I would not have predicted that with the way not just they looked on yesterday I mean even in Sunday's win and that blue jay series and and really going back back to that Philly series The offens is just just not looked great from night to night so it's been a long stretch now of this Braves offense not being able to score a ton of runs so not something I would have predicted and as we talked about yesterday Mackenzie Gore was on a really good run coming into this one and it only allowed three earned runs to the Braves all year in three starts before this one now his defense did let him down a little bit in that one inning but still the Braves were racking up some hits against him so yeah this is not a not an outcome I think many people would have predicted coming in yeah maybe it's the fourth time as a charm in facing a pitcher the same season I don't know but he was throwing a lot of strikes in the Braves they were aggressive in this and were able to get some big hits and you know it's not easy to to know exactly what to take from it I mean you don't want to get too high off of the fact that hey the Braves offense look great tonight because we know what the highs and lows of this club has been but it's hard to just miss it out of hand either because you did see a lot of guys up and down the order contributing to this multi-hit games 15 total hits for the Braves in this one and four home runs two of which belonging to Michael har but I think we also have to talk about how good was the bullpen after Lopez left Jesse Chavez John breia and Luke Jackson combining to finish off the shutout and close out the final eight Innings three for Chavez three for breia and two for Luke Jackson that helps the bravs a number of different ways obviously you love to see three guys come in and Pitch great and secondarily because they were able to cover all those Innings you didn't have to dip into really any of the other relievers that you might have just wanted to be able to stay away from in a lopsided game and you know have gassed up and ready to go for some bigger games that could be ahead maybe tomorrow but more so kind of with an eye towards the weekend with the Los Angeles Dodgers sluming yeah we'll see down the down the road how big this may actually be for the bres pitching staff you do have the off day on Thursday which which helps either way with the bullpen and trying to get them fresh even if you have to use all your guys tomorrow but you know the brav pitching staff has had a lot of shutouts this year it's been one of the best in baseball one inning of Ronaldo Lopez and then the rest of the game covered by Chavez brebbia a Jackson has to be you one of the most unlikeliest shutout performances I think you'll see from a pitching staff so yes it was huge not just covering those Innings but you know putting up those zeros as well you get the big big runs early and you're able to just hold on to that and not have to go to him Jimenez Johnson Lee bummer even and obviously glacius so this was obviously very huge from the pitching staff and those guys Chavez breia especially in those early and middle Innings just to be able to give them that workload because we'll see what happens with Lopez but you know sometimes you see we've seen this year when a pitcher gets injured like this it can throw off your rotation for a turn or two as you try to you know kind of recover from that but by having these guys cover these Innings and getting such a big win you find kind of feel like you can cover that a little bit more obviously that depends on what happens the next day but I think it makes it a little bit easier of a transition where you didn't just have to completely blow up your Bullpen after losing your starter for one inning and then have to recover from that for a couple of times through the rotation yeah we'll talk about this more later but Max freed has also been pitching pretty deep in the games these last few times out and is the exact kind of pitchure that you'd want to be starting on a day after you had to do something like this and between that and not having to use as many pitchers out of your Bullpen and the off day on Thursday a lot of things could go right if Fred is able to cover the Innings the way he has been in tomorrow's game which of course we will get to later you brought up that the Braves have been one of the best teams in terms of shutouts for their pitching staff they are the best team in baseball with that 15th shutout of the season for the Braves that is one more than the Philadelphia Phillies who are second in Major League Baseball rais though first in MLB now in ER at 349 as a pitching staff that continues to be an amazing amazing accomplishment for a group that has done it you know sometimes you kind of wonder how it's come together particularly when they were adding and subtracting a lot of pieces in the rotation early on in the year but the work the bullpen has done pretty consistently and the fact this rotation has solidified into one of the best that you'll find in any League that has been a big reason why you're seeing this brav ing staff also owns a 229 erra over the last 28 games they're 18 and 10 over that stretch Jake and that's not a bad record but when you have an erra that's that low you would expect it to probably yield you a few more wins than that but this is one of the better stretches that the Braves have had this year regardless of how it's felt at times yeah it hasn't felt great as times at times and over that stretch you there be many games where you can look at it and say Braves could have won this one Braves could have won that one a little bit more offense and and it's just where you're at in the season now and obviously every game matters all year long but especially at this point of the year when you're in a tight race like this you know you tend to reflect on those games that you could have won but didn't and as great as the pitching staff has been the offense has still held them back from that being an even better stretch you know 18 and 10 sounds really good and it is good but again it's just if you could have gotten a little bit more offense here and there and that one that could have been 23 24 wins over that stretch and you're sitting in a much better place in the wild card spot it does feel like they left some on the table I mean Sunday's a a prime example excuse me or Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds rather is a prime example of that offense over that same 28 game stretch averaging 4.25 runs per game that sounds high and that's because it is high the Braves have scored 45 of those 119 runs in the last 28 games in four contests so for the bulk of this the other 24 games and I know this is some cherry picking here but I think that anybody who has watched this team has felt the frustrations and it has not felt like an offense that's averaging over runs a game 3.1 runs per game outside of the four games in which the Braves have piled up 45 total runs again it's not to pick on the offense it's just to say there have been a few Highs but they are usually spread out about once a week or so on average and that's just not going to get it done on a consistent basis unfortunately when you got a pitching staff throwing as well as this one has been you'd like to have picked up a few more wins over that stretch over the past couple of weeks the good news is though and we'll talk about the wild card in depth a little bit later in the show the Mets lost to the Toronto Blue Jays and that means that the Braves are once again tied for the third and final spot in the wild card in the National League Jake I think we're going to be talking about this a lot over the next two and a half three weeks as the Braves the Mets the Diamondbacks and the Padres come down the stretch we don't know what it's all going to look like but we do know this the Braves need to start winning some games and it was about high time that they beat up on the Washington Nationals because they came into this one having already lost the season series to Washington if they can win again on Wednesday that make them six and seven against one of the not so great clubs in the National League yeah we talked about it all the time just the games that they've they've left on the table this year and the opponents that they just haven't taken advantage of when they could have but again you know as I said after after last night La Monday's loss that you win these two games against the Nationals you kind of treat it like a three- game series including that Reds game and you you take two out of three and you win a series and that'd be you know three Series in a row if you're looking at it that way and that's kind of what the Braves just needs to do the rest of the season obviously not much time left here but that's kind of the goal just win each Series win two of every three games that's not going to be easy but that's what this team has to do if they want to get in the postseason because these other teams are right there you're you're obviously right now tied for that last spot so you're not in the best position possible you don't have a little bit of a cushion like the Padre's and Diamondbacks do so you really just have to take advantage of these opportunities when you have them because you got four coming up against the Dodgers then you end the season against the Mets and the Royals who are both two really good teams so got to be able to win these games against the Nationals got to be able to take advantage on Wednesday as well with freed on the mountain yeah this is a spot in the schedule that we've talked about quite a bit that the Braves needed to really you know if not make a move then at least be able to strengthen their case and keep up with what's going on for the other teams in this wild card race and by winning these two games in Washington that would certainly help the Braves out and give them whatever momentum they can get to get ready for that encounter with the Los Angeles Dodgers which is usually a hard-fought series I would say almost always a hard-fought series a pivotal series when those two teams meet up regardless of what time of year it is when we come back we'll talk more about what's going on with Ronaldo Lopez of course more about what the bullpen was able to do but we got to get into the offense because there was quite a bit of that on display in this game in Washington we'll talk about all that as the line score and box score for what the bravs were able to do to the Washington Nationals which was a pretty impressive dismantling if we're being honest and haven't had as many of these this season as we had a year ago but you'll take them when you can get them and the Braves were certainly able to take care of business on Tuesday in the first of this two game series 12 runs 15 hits no errors for Atlanta they left 10 men on base did the Braves still they shut out the Nationals though on three hits couple of Errors for Washington seven men left on base for the Nets bravs now 79 and 66 Nationals 64 and 80 so almost inverted records for these two teams the win goes to Jesse Chavez he's now two and two really nice performance from him to come in first man out of the bullpen to take over for Ronaldo Lopez and was able to give the Braves three strong Innings three shutout Innings at that to pick up that Victory again he's two and2 and Mackenzie Gore takes the loss drops to 8 and 12 on the season there was no save in this game either as the Braves were able to Win It by quite a handy little score of 12 to nothing uh and you look up and down this lineup here and you see a lot of good things there three hit games for Michael Harris Matt Olsen and Ramone laurano two hit games as well for Shawn Murphy who homered and knocked in three runs lorano knocked in three runs couple more ribs for Matt Olsson in this one who also walked and a couple of runs knocked in on solo homers for Michael Harris II and just up and down the order it was a pretty good night for everybody but Gio orella unfortunately got that 0 for five collar but he did hit the ball hard a couple of times but either way this is what you needed to see I think as an answer to what wasn't happening on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds those the kind of the performances that the ones that we saw on Monday to close out the homestand those are going to have to be the thing that becomes fewer and further between not so much the nights like this yeah and look regardless of what happened on the bound tonight you would hope this was kind of a response either way to what happened on Monday an offense that just is frustrated to the point where you got Solair throwing iPads in The Dugout and it's just it's that level of frustration here and look I'm done kind of looking for that moment and that spark for this team we've just waited too long but again at some point you have to wake up and realize if we don't play better we are going to cost this great pitching staff a chance at doing something if we cannot get it going offensively and there has to be a sense of urgency and look again no matter what happened on the pitching side of things I I'm hoping that that was kind of what you know the offense was about tonight I know these guys are trying every day no matter what I know they want to come out there and perform uh but again at some point you you just have there has to be some sort of sense of urgency that we have to get going so you love to see it you love to to see a night like this where everybody like I said except for the unfortunate night for Gio or shella you see everybody kind of contributing up and down the lineup and having some good gam so that's certainly what you want to see from this offense but you know I think more so for me it's just good at bats you want to see overall good at bats just the competitiveness of the ADV bats here lately have not been great and it's easy to say that when you get a bunch of hits like this but can they continue to do that night in and Night Out can they continue to go up there and and just have good at bats and make good contacts and don't miss those mistake pitches they miss way too many mistake pitches so it's obviously great to see but again we're we're too far into the season for me saying oh is this the chance of the offense is this the time that the offense is going to break out I'm not GNA sit here and say that but I'll certainly take 12 runs on 15 hits anytime you want to give it to me yeah I mean breakout might be something that uh that ship may have sailed but can you find some consistency in being able to at least manufacture and put together some runs and have better at bats we're having this discussion on a day in which Hall of Famer Chipper Jones was on Corey cubber's podcast talking in depth about his frustrations in watching I think the state of the game which I know can be a tiresome topic for some folks and hearing how older retired players look at it but look I mean they played the game they're allowed to feel their way about it too uh but knowing that he has worked you know intimately with this club and is not enjoying watching the way that things have gone for the majority of this season with respect to yeah you lost Ronald lunia Jr you don't have Aussie alz you don't have Austin Riley all of that stuff but some little things not all the time but some little things and I think he pointed it out and we saw this in that blue jay series as well are the Braves trying to at least open their minds to maybe doing a few things differently because at this point it's a discussion we've had on this show as well you know I don't think you can sit around and wait for as you just pointed out the return to form the breakout for everybody involved in this offense that's what makes a year like 2023 special but it also is what makes a year like 2024 so frustrating because there hasn't really seemed to been or have been or be a real shift in the Dynam and it's not asking guys to do a whole bunch of things that they just don't know how to do can't do shouldn't be doing it's just little things here and there maybe finding a way to just tweak it a little bit would help things out for this offense because they are going to hit their home runs here we've seen that this year especially since uh really the start of July or really maybe middle of June this club will hit some homers but can they do some of the other stuff that can help them manufacture the runs when they need to I think that's becoming the big question and if anything that I think is what the Braves need to really find a way to do here over the next two three weeks and if they want to have some success in October to back up what is one of if not the best pitching staffs we've seen for the Braves in recent memory yeah one thing chipper talked about in there that the focus for the Braves on Slug and that's that's pretty obvious you saw the lineup they've built and when everybody's healthy that is great and it's more than likely going to work out but when it doesn't the other thing chipper mentioned was the the focus on on base and the fact that he thinks maybe they don't focus on that as much and that's really what's killed this Braves team as you mentioned they've got gotten the home runs in the second half but there's just nobody on base for those home runs and they're not getting on base it's I believe since the end of April they are next to last in all of baseball and on base percentage only above the white socks so yeah it's just up and down the lineup there's not that ability to to get on base and as I talked about last night you know I'm looking for them to try something different I'm looking for them to to run try some hidden runs but you got to have people on base to do that and you got to have the right guys on base and at the plate to be able to do that so again even in this game before all the runs came on the board you saw Luke Williams get on and you saw him run that's great you get guys on like that especially at the bottom of your order I think that is the perfect time to try some things to send some guys some move some Runners see what you can do to see if you can force a run across you get into the middle of your lineup and you got an Ozuna and Olsson and a Murphy up there and a Solair you want those guys to stay put because you don't want to miss out on the two or three run home run that those guys can bring but at the bottom of that order especially just feel like there are guys that you can try to do different things with to try to generate some runs without the benefit of a hit getting a walk in a stolen base and moving a guy over I think those are things that the bravs are going to have to do if they going to want to score more consistently but know time's running out to start doing that yeah and some of the moving Runners over this is not asking guys to just drop down bunts right left and Center you know and start just sacrificing everyone playing station the station but being able to hit the ball the other way to move a runner from one base to another being able to put the ball in play to a middle infielder with a runner at third that gives him a chance to score in an inning all that little stuff just adds up and I think Chipper Jones knows a thing or two or three about that and it was just interesting to hear those comments and I think probably for a lot of Braves fans they're they're probably watching that or listening to that thinking it's what I've been saying all year and obviously a lot of people feel that way putting that aside because that was a complete tangent I did not have down on the sheet but just thought it was interesting initial test clean for Ronaldo Lopez he will get an MRI on Wednesday in Washington didn't sound altogether that bad from both Brian Snicker's comments and from the reports that I was reading after the game from Justin Tuscano and others however Ronaldo Lopez one inning shoulder tightness was what cost him uh a chance to go any further Brian Snicker said he wanted to keep going but at this point Jake I think you'll agree and and most anybody would you just don't want to chance it with something like this let's just figure it out and as it happened it's a good night to score 12 runs and the bullpen did its job yeah I mean it worked out well for the Braves in the end got the big win and didn't have to really use a lot of their big arms but it it's scary because look it's great that initial tests look good and it seems like maybe they're they they might avoid one here but the velocity is down almost four miles per hour that that is scary to me right there it's not like it was down just a tick or two it was down a lot um so again hopefully it is just some tightness we're at the point of the Year too Grant where if a pitcher has to be shut down for a week you're done for the season essentially so uh you know it's just a tough tough part of the season for something like this to happen and for what has been the strength of this Braves team you just really can't afford to have any losses like that like at this point of the season so hopefully it do nothing major and they won't have to shut him down he can get back out there soon but again just seeing that velocity and just how far down it was that's a little worrisome to me yeah and he has been throwing so well since coming off the injured list so maybe it's just one of those nights where it's just a little bit harder to get loose and look pitchers are feeling some kind of way all season long there's never a oh feel 100% back to normal I have no soreness I have I mean it's just what is normal what is not normal is there tightness is there discomfort I mean in being able to you know as it happens you know just kind of be honest about how you're feeling as well because you don't want to compound it on your side and and take the decision away from the team as well that's not a great situation to get into be that as it may we'll see what comes out of it for Ronaldo Lopez and obviously we'll update you when we hear more on it as well but uh the Braves yeah their strength is pitching to lose somebody like him for any length of time at this period of time would be less than ideal for this club when we come back we will talk a little bit more about what is going on for the Braves in the series in Washington take a look at the wild card and get you set up for the series finale and maybe a look ahead to the weekend with the America's number one sports book today and take advantage of this offer well Jake the Braves um you know as we were just talking about going to be tested uh you know in trying to figure out what this is going to be with Ronaldo Lopez the pitching staff though is strong as we talked about earlier on best ER in the majors now major Le best 15th shutout of the Season maybe the most unorthodox or non-traditional shutout that they've had this year most certainly allowing for the names that were involved Jesse Chavez John breia and Luke Jackson to close this thing out after Ronaldo went just one inning any lengthy absence though I think as you were talking about I did want to touch on this based on the fact that the Braves have just over two weeks worth of games you land on the 15-day iil that's going to put you in a really weird spot and minor league baseball season is going to run out as far as the traditional rehab starts are going to go that's another thing to consider yes they can throw Sim games and face live batters and do all of that it probably works out better for pitchers than it does for hitters in this case but yeah you just don't want to be talking about losing somebody like Lopez at this particular time with very little time to ramp back up for the most critical time of the year here should the Braves be able to get into the postseason with this battle with the Mets the Diamond Backs and the Padres it's certainly not ideal because again if you go on the 15-day I you can certainly you know come straight back from that and go into the rotation but then you're probably going to be on a little bit of a pinch limit and again these are games that you you need to win and you obviously want to put somebody out there you feel like that's going to give you a great chance to win I feel like Lopez if healthy obviously he's going to be able to do that but yeah just not ideal timing it's obviously not great at any time but as I said earlier just at this point of the season with the tight race that you're in and every game being so critical here and just it would hurt to Le lose Lopez for for any amount of time yeah well hurt to lose anybody who's a significant part of this rotation you've got five starters that I think you can pretty much believe in going down the stretch and as I've said many times if your fifth starter is Charlie Morton you're in a pretty good place considering how well Spencer swellen boach is thrown but he's also you know past the level of innings that he has ever thrown in his professional career this is a career high kind of thing for him how will the Braves manage that as they go along there are a few different things for them to figure out and one of them you don't want to be what's going on with Ronaldo Lopez you like your veteran guys to be able to go to the post and help lead this rotation and Ronaldo has been a huge part of the success of this Braves pitching staff in the Wild Card the Mets lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by a 6-2 score which means the Braves and Mets are once again tied for the third and final wild card spot Padres and Diamondbacks both playing late games out west starting at 9:40 p.m. eastern time on Tuesday but just looking at what the Braves needed to do win a game and they were helped out by the Mets losing a game so we're kind of right back where it feels like we've been for a little over a week or two now you it feels like it's coming down to that that season uh or that Series against the Mets at home later in in the year later in the month and feels like we're all heading towards that and just like it was two years ago maybe the winner of that is the team that gets uh and this one obviously gets to the postseason loser may not we'll see I mean you get both teams in obviously still but that just kind of feels like where we're headed but good to see the Mets actually lose a game they they've been on quite the run here lately so great to see the Blue Jays give the give the Braves some help this time yeah Max freed in his last what three no make that four of his excuse me three of his last four starts has pitched seven Innings and the Braves could use a seven inning outing for him as he runs up against the Washington Nationals in the finale of that series you know the Mets and the Blue Jays will continue their battle the Braves were able to take two out of three from Toronto could the Blue Jays help out the Braves by winning a series in New York that would certainly be nice we'll see if that can happen game two has Max freed facing Jake Irvin nine and eight for Freed at 335 ra Irvin 9 and 12 with a 428 the right-hander for Washington in game two of the series which happens on Wednesday at 6:45 pm. eastern time with freed as we talked about earlier and as I just mentioned he has been giving the Braves some pretty good length I believe that five inning outing for him was the one that had the crazy 90-minute rain delay in the midst of it so chance that he could have gone further in that up in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago but overall I I feel like in the second half particularly since coming off the injured list which was another question mark the Braves have had to navigate here in the second half Max freed has been pitching the way that they need him to down the stretch yeah a couple of rough starts after coming back from that injury but he's started to get on a roll as you mentioned gone seven innings in three of his last four out outings now been really really good he's walked one or less in three of those four outings as well so great to see for Max freden look you know after after the pitching you got on Monday or on Tuesday and the offense you got you know give me seven Innings of Max freed turn it over to Jimenez and glacius in the back in and and try to sweep this two game set in Washington that certainly seems like the game plan but Fred looks to be back to his his poent you know perennial sa young type of self and just a great pitcher that he's been for so long I did also want to just mention and touch on it if somebody needed to replace Ronaldo Lopez Ian Anderson pitched for guette tonight and looked really good six Innings four hits did walk Three that's always been kind of an issue with him but just one earned run so he could potentially line up to fill in I think he would be next man up if the Braves needed somebody we've also seen I don't know if you've been looking at gwet as close as I have the last week but a lot of guys piling up a lot of strikeouts some really good performances in that starting staff I know Bryce Elder AJ Smith Scher Hurston walri all of these guys have thrown well lately those may not all be the names in that order that you want to he and the Braves I don't think are in a position where they need to you know have the kind of tryouts that maybe they were having for a while but there are some options there that could be able to help you out should you need that depth a turn or two in rotation but it would be kind of I guess nice for Ian Anderson certainly to find his way back to the big leagues and maybe help out the Braves at a critical time if needed and he would line up you're right last time out for Max freed though seven Innings one run it was unearned eight strikeouts just one walk and a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays you'd certainly take a performance like that against the Washington Nationals in game two of the series against Jake Irvin the Braves have shown themselves to have a ability to pile up a bunch of runs against the Nationals that we weren't sure was something they could do in 2024 can they do it again and sweep this quick series Jake I think it's pretty much at this point a must you've got to start beating up on the teams you're supposed to and the Washington Nationals are on that list like I said coming into this stretch this nine game stretch you had to had to at least go six and three I was hoping s- two but he like I said this is a must-win game for me when you're facing a team like the Nationals and especially after what happened on Monday you have to win this game with Max freed on the mound your Bullpen fully healthy and ready to go I think your biggest fear is did you use up all your runs in one game because that we're not seeing the offense do that as you mentioned earlier they've had some some stretches at times where they score a bunch of runs and then they can't do anything after that for quite a while you hope that's not the case you'd love to see them build upon what they did Tuesday the offense put up a bunch of runs Max free do it he did last time which I thought was one of his better outings of the year and turn it over to those good those big guys in the back of the bullpen sounds like a good recipe for a victory Max fre against Jake Irvin 6:45 p.m. eastern time as the Braves and Nationals wrap up their brief two game series on a Wednesday that's
