CanMNT πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ vs. USMNT πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ (September 7, 2024) | International friendly | Matchday Live PRE-GAME SHOW

shg Jacob sh goal for [Music] Canada off the bar and out heartbreak for Canada inside Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City Canada and America go head-to-head in an International Friendly the Canadians look to keep their momentum from Copa America alive for Jesse Mar she knows his side needs to start winning and that comes with scoring goals the Americans look to change the tide after a disappointing showing at Copa that saw manager Greg berhalter ousted still awaiting the arrival of rumored new head coach maricio poino they'll try to get their confidence back against their neighbors to the north it's Match Day Live and it's right here on one soccer hello Canada and welcome inside our one soccer Studio Andy patrello alongside Jordan Wilson Christian Jack we are getting ready for a great match it's the Rivalry that keeps on giving it's Canada USA and in the last five years the Canadians have really elevated their game in conac cap especially against two of The Perennial contenders in the region USA in Mexico the Canadians recently pulling off victories against both of those teams in World Cup qualifying but when a trophy is on the line the Canadians have fallen short in particular against the Americans the most recent events you have to look at last year Nations League final they lost to the US and in the Gold Cup losing to the us as well but here's the thing we've seen some changes in conap when it comes to the managers all three teams Canada USA Mexico by the way throw in Jamaica they too have a new manager so I wonder when it does come to cona cap and yes the Canadians by the way the only cona cap team to move on out of the group stage in Copa America KJ has the balance of power shifted at all well I don't think they feel like it has in the US or Mexico despite the fact that they are more than their own worst critics they you know they are not happy the way things are going right now but I think whenever I speak to anybody in those countries they're certainly not willing to put Canada ahead of them yet um and despite what we would bring as evidence right and that evidence is what you mentioned you the World Cup qualifying top of the table the fact that they beat they went to the cop cup America semi-final where Mexico in the United States were flat out very disappointing in those group stages so look there's there's a number of things that Canada still need to do and Achieve you know win on their soil first time since 1957 today would be a great achievement so look I think within that dressing room internally Canada believe that they are the best in conquer CAF now Jordan and that might be the most important thing I think they should I think there's evidence to prove that when you're looking at conquer CAF I'm excited for for certain Nations coming up you're looking at Jamaican Federation as well Steve McLaren coming in a guy that can uh persuade certain dual Nationals to to play for Jamaica and guys stepping up within their their country but then you have also for the Americans as well um maybe patino coming in the expertise that he will bring but Canada for me I still think is the most exciting because you had someone in Jesse Marsh come in um this will be his ninth game immediately had a different brand immediately have a different style and you see players stepping up all around the pitch for their country so I think K is looking good in that respect yeah pettino I mean he hasn't officially been named you're not worried all right KJ you're like he's he just has to work out that sance package with Chelsea I don't know he' be an incredible hire for them yeah it really I know um well let's take a look at Canada here and under Jesse Marsh he is the manager who took over in May eight games under him and there has been one win four draws and three losses so they're taking on the Americans today we know on September 10th KJ it will be against Mexico so in this window what's at stake for the Canadians well I think a a a great deal you know first of all it was very important to come off the momentum that they gathered at Copper America to come out and play significant opposition again that's what Jesse Marsh has been speaking to me about this week in a number of media members these are games of real meaning that they need to be tested on you know the September trans the September International window is always very peculiar different the momentum can sometimes swing away but Canada have that momentum Jordan after what was a significant summer so I think the fact that they get to play these two games yes they're international friendlies but let's be honest the never friendly occasions when you play the US in any sport and the same for Mexico these are games of real meaning and and I think if they don't get accomplished what they want to they'll look back and think it's a missed opportunity ahead of a really important 2025 when there's trophies on the line in the Gold Cup of Nations leag I totally agree with you when Canada play Argentina France Netherlands it's hard to compare yourself to certain Nations you want to go there and and do well and have a respectable game and and learn things when you play the US you play Mexico that is not a game where you're trying to see where you are you want to make sure that you're on top and make sure that you beat them so I agree with you there aren't friendlies when you play the Americans but for me there not friendly as a competition when you haven't beaten someone on their soil in nearly 70 years like it's a blood bath and it should be and I think this is a time for Canada to to show people wasn't a fluke that they're here to stay and that they can be one of the best teams in cocka CAF let's take a look at the starting 11 the team that Jesse Marsh has put together here brought to you by GE and some notable names getting the start Ali Ahmed the Vancouver White Caps Matthew schier will also be in the Midfield with Ishmael con out due to injury uh the lack of goal scoring As We Know that was a big Topic at least so far under Jesse Marsh four goals in the eight games under him but no changes up front with Jonathan David and Kyle lren so why don't we start there are you surprised or not surprised Jordan that there's been no change to that front Duo I'm not surprised I think you keep the tandem um seven out of eight games that Marshall's in charge he has those two up front obviously switch things up against against urua and that third place match in the cop of America but you take one out in my opinion you lose something right you have to keep both I think you have to keep trying and I know people are maybe talking about Kyle Aaron and his productivity in front of goal and Jonathan David could be scoring more if he was playing in the number nine position but when you have two threats that have scored 29 and 28 goals for Canada I think you play both of them KJ yeah I like the fact that we have to talk collectively about the pair because very often in sports we analyze and we evaluate individuals right but this is a team sport and they blend each other so well right so if you think you take one of them away okay let's say KY Len I think he's got what eight goals in 53 games uh in all competitions it's not been an easy 14 to 15 months for Kyle but defensively the work rate that he's putting in in blocking that passes into Midfield how he works for the team he compliments David So if you say oh we're taking Len out we're going to play dav's higher when ton comes in let's play a brand of a 4-33 suddenly Jonathan David becomes your nine when he's actually a better as a withdrawn forward because of the defensive work that he puts in his Supreme intelligence how he's very good at being deeper and then working in the transition so they are blending each other very well individually we'll look at the numbers and go okay as I said it's not been good for Len he's got one goal internationally in the last 13 games since the World Cup David is about one in every three since the start of 2021 after his remarkable start against lower opposition which is about right for the quality that he is internationally so I don't have any concerns about these two and I'm not surprised to answer your question that they're back in together again for Jesse Marsh and I think too KJ with Marsh a new coach coming in only his ninth match that he's coached this this squad there's chemistry that you want to nurture these two for me people always talk about a left back plays well with a certain left midfielder but a 10 or two two n however you want to put it with David and lren you want that chemistry to be nurtured for sure let's remember this conversation because maybe at halftime I'm curious to know if something doesn't happen at what point does Jesse Marsh have to split them up like how much longer can you wait it's a good topic that of course we'll get back to but I also want to look at the midfields Ali ahed getting the start Matthew Scher we know had just recently in made the move to Switzerland with grasshoppers just what do you make of them getting the start here and kind of what do you want to see from them yeah I'll take schan first I think it's interesting when you think you could have gone with aoro I think aoro is probably better suited for Mexico I think this window with the game again on Tuesday they have to be very careful how often they play these players um I'm an enormous fish one yeah I I think Canada has got to get to a point now where they continue to keep possession longer it's no longer a transition team let's Bea teams on the on the Counterattack we know what that was the case in Copper America when you're playing teams who are far higher caliber and been around a lot more but as you evolve this team in conquer C and get to a point where you want to contend for trophies and win significant games in the 2026 World Cup the onus is going to be on Canada to continue to dictate with the ball and I think he Blends well with usako I'm glad he's got his move he was excellent against Uruguay and much like Ali Ahmed he was also excellent to get J it's almost like Jesse has rewarded both of them Jordan to get the chance yeah he has rewarded and I'm glad because I think think too with both these players the 25-year-old and Matthew sh shanier he's coming into a team where he has that talent but it hasn't always shown he's been a late sub sometimes it's kind of not that he's dragging his feet but he just hasn't showed the product that he has I think starting a match getting that warm-up getting into a game like this against Americans on American soil that only does wonders for a player and a guy like Ali Ahmed I think when you look at 2026 he's a player that you're putting in for me the top 13 14 right and can sub in whether that be in the middle or on the wing he's he's a Swiss army knife and I I think Jesse Marsh really wants to use him and test him and see what he's made of Jesse said sorry that Ali Abed has progressed so much since he saw him in the summer to now as well and that says a lot about him bombo Cornelius look great as that Center back pairing uh do they still have something to prove or do you think those are their positions to lose it's their positions to lose for sure I think just continue on with what they're doing and just show that this partnership is here to stay and again chemistry is such a big thing in football just making sure that they handle their business from the start KJ yeah we don't have a lot of time I'll just say with these two for me now is that you know they were the surprise package of the summer right the fact that they went not only did they get picked but in terms of the level of quality that they played against I spoke to bonbo this week against playing against Messi twice and how much they learn they've now moved to League uh right with Marse and nce they are not easy clubs to play for not easy fan bases to play for they're competitive games and now the step for them is to go up again so that's what how will benefit cada we don't want these players not playing at their Club so it'll be interesting to see it but I'm sure that they start this game full of confidence knowing that that shirt they don't need to battle for it it's their position and they've earned it that's what Canadians want to see here are the opponents they're going up against the United States starting 11 brought to you by GE a lot of names missing we'll get to the names missing shortly but of course the big ones pich balagan balagan by the way getting a goal against the Canadians in that Nations League final as well in Vegas uh last year they are definitely in this lineup but when we go through KJ the amount of players who are missing here for the Americans a lot of it obviously duee to injury no Tim WEA no Tyler Adams no miles Robinson no gioa um I mean no Weston mcken that's more because they want him to stay with Juventus what type of team are we looking at here with the Americans where are they at right now well a lot of people don't have any idea um as the United States don't they called these players in very late um it was very difficult to plan you know when you compare where they are from Canada right now history will tell us the United States are favorites to win this game when you look at those players they are significant players right when you compare where Canada is we just talked about schan and Ahmed Canada had nine of the 11 players playing in the starting 11 today that played against Argentina in the quarterfinals the cup America us only has six players who played in against Uruguay in their last competitive game they've got almost a half team you know so this is a very inexperienced team playing together look they're very good at home they play a lot of games at home I think it contributes the fact that their record quite frankly away from home is woful that's their problem not ours um but ultim ultimately this is still a a team that they will expect to win and when you've got someone like Pula leading the charge that is very impressive to see but they will lack I think Midfield quality without Adams and McKenna you bring a real bite yeah and I think that's where Canada should hurt them and plan to hurt them in that possession and just battles in the Midfield you're looking at the Americans and and the way that they bowed out of cop America early when they hosted as well this is a a country and a nation and a team that's under construction missing some of their spine uh where you really lead and and that have been battle tested before that aren't there today for me this is an opportunity for Canada to really show them what's up well the Americans to your point they're always going to believe they're going to win they do have a ton of depth but if the Canadians don't pull off a victory here would you be disappointed I would be I would be I think now is the time just the KJ's point and what everyone would say is that there's momentum with this team it's not now when right exactly like this is the time to go and do it uh we have a busy slate of shows here for you on one soccer yes we're bringing you this great match between Canada USA but coming up after the game will be our Tony bet match of the week two power houses in the CPL it's Forge versus Cavalry kickoff will go at 6:30 p.m. ET or sorry pregame 6:30 we'll get you set for that 7 PM game right here on one soccer well lonso Davies has been asserting himself as a leader on the national team under Jessie Marsh he's shown a different side of himself as he embraced the left back role on a team where he usually plays higher up the joining me I'll be living in the city not living in the city in 5 years I'll be king of the Court I'll be playing for Canada I'll be playing for Canada in 5 years where won't I be in 5 [Music] [Applause] years thank you Canada for making dreams come true we're with you all the way in recent years Canada's Men's National Team has become much more Global with nearly half of the roster now signed to clubs from all across Europe the other half of course operate from coast to coast in major league soccer with the most Representatives this window coming from CF Montreal today these players have descended on Children's Mercy Park in Kansas city where the Americans are unbeaten through 10 alltime fixtures in the Land of Oz [Music] that was definitely a big game we knew that you know we had to get something from that game we knew that we're going to go in the US you know playing on their home soil is going to be tough it's going to be a hostile environment but uh we stuck together as as as a team and uh yeah we got something you know got we got a point out of that game it's never easy going you know and playing the US on their home soil but we did well and and now we knew that we needed to get something because you know it's so it's a walk up you know we were fighting for uh for a chance to play at the biggest stage in the world and I think everybody was hungry and to be able to get that one1 that one-1 draw and and uh and bring it back to our house and and and finish off the tie was was spectacular the ball holds up he's going to take it himself s AI it [Applause] go I was itching to be out there um you know fortunate incidents stopped me from from being out there with the boys but um I was watching I was supporting them from home you know even though I'm not on the pitch you know I still support and I'm still one of the biggest fans for sure um yeah watching the gar with my father was was really emotional uh because you know this is that's the type of game where you know playing for your country means a lot and to be able not to to physically be there um was uh you know was uh was was devastating but overall the boys did their job and uh we got the win in our in our home country that Nations League finals um that was an opportunity to to get a trophy for for this country um obviously like I said before playing the US is never easy we knew that you know it's a it's a finals and they're going to come out with everything we also had to come out with everything and uh yeah I mean we we left it all we left it all out there on the pitch um the the battle the the the header the tackles the shots the saves the everything it's just we left everything out there and unfortunately we couldn't you know reach the fitting line but you know that's just a reminder for us um for all the boys that has been there um at that time you know watching them lift the trophy you know it's it's it did something to us and uh definitely we're we're taking that you know with the grein of salt and and coming back uh for revenge for [Music] sure it's it's big games you know playing the two big uh let's say North American uh countries uh yeah we're we're excited we're happy um yeah I mean the first game is in USA and we're ready for that challenge and also another big test against Mexico um overall I think the boys know how important it is you know even though it's a friendly there's something still meaningful and behind it arfield got arfield across Davies is there it's in it's over the line Alonso Davies we know that this this is a this a rivalry that you know is going to last years after years you know even even when you know everyone that are playing in this rivaly now retires and we know it's going to keep going but uh but we're ready for it we're we're motivated you know we we have the energy and uh yeah we're looking forward to the game and we can't wait wait to go out there and and show what we what we've been you know we've been learning we've been doing on a training pitch and and put into the game someone else that we saw in that feature of course was Sam ataku originally named to this squad unfortunately had to pull out due to an injury and we wondered what Alonso davies's role would look like would Sam ataku be back would Jesse Marsh play him for further up the pitch but KJ with Sam atak Kuby out he will in fact Alonso Davies be that left back what role do though do you want to see him play in these kinds of games look I think he's fine where he is you know I I know you know there's a lot there's always going to be talk about where to play Davies right that's what happens when he when you have that versatility and and I suppose with Canada not scoring maybe as many goals as people would have liked recently I think the bigger conversation about Davies is not necessarily whether he's a left back or a wing back is how he's evolving as an individual and then you know how he's empowering other people how he's being vocal on the field how he's needs to be a bit more of a leader his body language is improving all of those things that Jesse Marsh has challenged him about and I think he's responding he is at a point in his age now in his development Jordan where he wants to be challenged he work he's still at Bayern Munich he plays for one of the top clubs in the world and he wants to get better and be challenged and I still think that that challenge is ongoing for him but he Embraces it yeah as he should I think when he's looking at Players when I think about Fonzi two years ago and players that played before him and you could see that he was seeing the game and playing at the game at High Pace but he wasn't always there uh verbally or felt free to to demand uh Perfection from from other players and now I think that's there when I watch um just as of late and Copa America and even sometimes it's okay to get a bit bit fiery with your with your teammates right and demand more but before I felt like he was kind of hiding a little bit in that regard but it's nice to see a young man who's played this game who's represented this country for so long be like it's okay to demand that now finding that balance is key right you don't want to be the guy that's always barking and and and negative but I think pushing your teammates to to be better I think everyone respects that man and he's the guy to do it and depending on what's happening with the team you accept the role that you're in he did that beautifully again Copa America left back you wonder if that narrative changes a little bit if they can't find those goals but Jesse Marsh pointing out that he was is of you know the best player and sometimes felt like he had to put more on his shoulders now with the depth that Canada has everyone has a role that they fit into quite nicely now speaking of depth of Canada it just you know not that long ago it was a foregone conclusion that this type of matchup Canada would lose that mentality's changed over the years why is that well I think the biggest shift from them is their is their mindset and you know I'm not surprised that Jesse marshia has had a development curve with results of improvement for me how quickly it's come Jordan is how they are so mature on the field against against adversity they're not letting anxiety distractions affect their way it is the the pro level athlete level of high performance where they're saying no it doesn't matter where we play who we play what envirment we play in we're not letting referees or anybody distract us totally agree with you and when we look it in context July uh 2023 when you play Nations League final against the us there was a naivity in the Canadian side didn't know what to do know how to figure things out if they were to play that same match today I'm confident that can would find a different way to hurt the Americans well even though they've beaten Americans they've done that on Canadian soil because in fact the last time Canada's Men's National Team beat us on American soil Elvis Presley's All Shook Up top the Billboards it was the Canadian men right here in this 1957 photo who claimed a 3-2 World Cup qualifying win over the Americans in St Louis Missouri 67 years later we'll see if the new generation of Canadian men can get it done as we get set for kickoff in Kansas City that's what's coming
