ULTIMATE CanMNT πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ vs. USMNT πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ match preview πŸ‘€ | Presented by tonybet

welcome back to another episode of one soccer today not quite the Holy Trinity but an admirable Trinity nevertheless with Oliver plats and Gareth wheeler I am Adam Jenkins gentlemen we are so excited that we get to see the Canadian Men's National Team back in Action this weekend right here on one soccer I know Gareth is frantically preparing for the matches Oliver plat of course is watching demmerly absorbing and getting ready to his best I don't know it's a word I heard a lot lately I feel like it it fits you well Oliver plot um let's talk about it Jesse Marsh and Canada it is a pair of friendlies on the road down south against the Americans against the Mexicans we seem to always play this game Gareth wheeler what's at stake well the answer for this one is maybe a little bit less than normal because they are just friendlies and there is no real Associated meaning with it but if you ask Jesse Marsh in conversation with the boys there is always a little extra at stink when you're playing your Southern names they know how important it is and they have a lot of respect for the US and and they know how hard those games are um you know obviously winning the conaf world qualif world World Cup qualifying stage was an incredible accomplishment and they carry that with them no doubt um but I you know I heard a couple of them say yeah I'm not sure if we've won on us soil yet and and so in general I think um A lot's been established where they can look at this fixture and go yeah this is this is a big fixture for us and a and a chance for us to make statements um I think the statements right now are more internal that that we deserve to be here that we belong here that we we are ready for this um so you know for me it's just about really taking those energies and continuing our process and making sure that we understand what details are going to be important for playing specifically against who they are what they are and making sure that we're ready to perform for what we want to be so but certainly I know that there's excitement for for this match and and the Mexico match as well so Gareth wheeler statements inward statements not boasting about being Kings of conaf based on the tone of Jesse Marsh but a chance to say hey USA hey Mexico we're here and when 2025 rolls around we will be a thorn in your side is that sort of the vibe you're getting that that is ultimately what these guys are playing for in this window kind of they will have their own internal goals uh we can clarify Jesse Marsh's statements my 20122 Canadian certainly not out of date whatsoever these are colle collectors that oh a year ahead of you uh when you dig deep into the history uh between these two sides beating the US has been few and far between like these moments don't come around very often but can it have only beaten the United States once ever on American soil again 1957 July 6 in a 3-2 victory in World Cup qualifying uh for Sweden 1958 played in St Louis Missouri pretty close to Kansas City where they're going to be playing um look so so for the history books this matters um for Jesse Marsh to continue to bring this group together to play the way that he wants to play um these games matter to pick up some wins like people are very encouraged about the manner by which kada went and played in very competitive games in the buildup and at Copa America which is good need to start putting some wins together all those things matter but here's the kicker this window sucks it's the worst out of all International Windows because domestic leagues across Europe are just starting um it's kind of problematic as certain players are still building up to to full fitness um be beyond that we enter a camp where I was looking forward to seeing Sam atak play he's not going to be there um isma K not going to be there ton Buchanan obviously still out I think that those are three pretty important players for this team going forward and there's always going to be the kicker no matter what the result is whether they win lose or draw against the United States and Mexico for the US you know intra manager it's like pre pochettino or whatever they're going to do next and for Mexico it's the first game under their new manager so there's going to be these like kickers you know if they win it's going to be like okay yeah but if they go in and lose it's going to be like okay yeah but so yeah it's a difficult window I'm always excited to see this team play I think they're very watchable especially under Jesse Marsh and let's see what ways he Tinkers with this group to make it that much more compelling well I'm inspired by the Paralympics going on right now so I'm going to take the figurative baton and continue to pass it along too because Gareth is getting into something we do want to touch on in this opening segment and that is availability and we've seen some of the players come in we've seen some of the players come out when you think of what lineup decisions and Partnerships Jesse March might want to toy with does that influence how excited or or what you think might be at stake in this window as as we sort of think about who is available for the Canadian Gaff not really no because you know I know this match isn't the be all and end all in terms of Canada under Jesse Marsh over the next year but I think it is one match a body of work that Canada is trying to build to try and kind of change the status of this program and continue to progress it and I think this group of players has already done that to the point where now when they play these games they expect that they they think they have a chance of winning right they think they can beat these teams but they're not necessarily doing it on on a consistent basis they're not necessarily doing it in the biggest games like a Nations League final where they fell short and while that statistic is still there that they haven't beaten the US in the US in 1957 since 1957 pelle's first World Cup like you can't really say that you're equals with that kind of team right like so I I think there's still some work to do for this Canada team to really get themselves on that kind of Level Playing Field with the US and Mexico where the expectation is that you know we're going to go and and give these teams a real match every single time so nothing really changes that for me in in terms of the the players like I I do think K being absent is is the big one um what is that Midfield going to look like who's going to be the player to come in I almost feel like Jonathan aoro it's it's almost unfair on him but he's the guy who's 32 years old with 78 caps you kind of know what you're going to get from aoro you can trust him and rely upon him I wonder if Jesse Marsh in this window is going to want to see Matthew shanier Ali Areds niiko Seager the play players that he knows less about in that Central Midfield role so that would be interesting for me to watch but I do think these games are important for Canada in terms of you know just continuing that momentum that they've built up under Jesse Marsh so far G that's always The Balancing Act isn't it with with these windows where there's less at stake than a match of consequence or tournament football if it was up to you or or perhaps you don't care and you just think you might have inclination of what Jesse Marsh might do would you rather see him say okay let's audition some players with less on the line or do you think that this is a chance to sort of build on that momentum and continuity from the Copa America success uh I think for the second game yes absolutely little bit of a tight turnaround Saturday to Tuesday and I think this game against the US means a little bit more to the manager as well the players I don't know games against Mexico are big especially in Arlington Texas it's going to be a pro- Mexican crowd there but I think that this game means something to Jesse Mar so you might see something more similar um to what we saw you know predominantly be used at the Copa America I do think that there's some questions and positions up for grabs though Adam I I think that of all the Outfield players I think that amongst Lookers there was a lot of questions about Kyle Aaron um fantastic player alltime leading goal scorer with the Canadian Men's National Team but does he necessarily fit to a tea the way that Jesse Marsh wants to play I say continue to play him right now but it doesn't mean that he's a lock moving forward I think that the preference would be and we saw tan Ola wasai come in multiple games a player that can maybe get him behind the line a little bit play a little bit more direct add a little bit more Pace over the top kenet traditionally used the wings to do that um under John Herdman this system is a little bit different though so we'll see where Kyle Len's role actually um what that role's GNA more look like going forward I think that once they bring in potentially a Daniel jebson that role might be a little bit even more in question and I know that people are probably sick of the repetitive nature of having this conversation but I think it's worth having it's like where best to play Alonso Davies like this this question isn't going anywhere because he is a star player and over the course of Copa America I thought he played well right like he was steady he played left back but he didn't play like a star player at that tournament because I don't think it necessarily you know for a Canada team that is forced to dig in for long stretches of the game and play a little bit different I think that he's more effective or can be more effective where he can shine that much brighter if he plays in a more events Ro that's why with adak KU and behind the record playing with together is phenomenal that would have been really interesting to see if Marsh was willing to experiment with that the fact that adaki isn't in that might relegate Davies back to left back which by the way I'm fine with him playing but if you want to be not just a good but a great team I think that you might need Alonso Davies your best player playing it a little bit of a different way um so maybe over the course of these two games Adam we we see Davies play a little bit further up we did see him a moment here or there do that but I I think a prolonged run under Jesse Marchin the way that he wants to play that would be really interesting to me and all anything finally on the the lren discussion that just that seems to be quietly just off the shoulder of the davs at left back it it's been David and Len as the other probably the second head of the monster um anything to add there or perhaps even uh in goal is it still time for for Max kpo to get some minutes with this nation yeah I think kpo is the number one going forwards I'd be surprised if that changes Len Len's going to be a conversation like I I think just looking at his goal scoring records cluband country in the last few months or in 2024 really like you have to say that that's becoming one where there are players pushing him now whether it's another Striker likei whether it's even playing you know more of a Midfield three and and that will become more relevant I think when K is available but yeah it's it's a conversation as as to whether he's a locked in starter I think at this point so for themes and other narrative surrounding this first match especially against the Americans I think one that's getting a lot of headlines certainly South of the Border is Jesse Marsh returning to the US now coaching Canada and there's been lots of talk about it as you might expect we know where Jesse Marsh stands some of the sound bites he's had about uh his lack of desire to return to US soccer in the immediate or perhaps even distant future of course he's focused on Canada right now but all there's no doubt that this is a story with some of the maybe vitals is overselling it a bit but there's no doubt that it's not necessarily Kumbaya with Martian the Americans and the fact that he'll be back there do you worry perhaps that that narrative could overshadow or take up a suffocating amount of of talking time around this match no not really I think it's a good story I'm I'm quite intrigued by it to be honest with you and I think like you know the primary reason obviously they hir Jesse marshes is coaching resume and he's coached in the Premier League and the Bundesliga and he has some knowledge of Canadian soccer and North American soccer and all of that but a secondary reason that they hired him is because he's very media friendly uh and he's not shy to do interviews and I think for a program that you know is trying to get the faces of the team out there more and builds the profile of this program in Canadian sports and also for a federation that has been a PR nightmare for for several years now and is trying to change their image like that was a part of why he was hired as well he's very very good at that stuff so I think it's hard to you know reap the benefits of of how willing he is to do media and how much he's getting the team out there and the players names out there but then say oh well not like this we don't like this part right because because of a particular storyline that's going to take up a lot of oxygen I'm sure in in the US media so no it doesn't really bother me to be honest yeah I mean I it doesn't bother me either but let's be honest what the story is it's a US soccer story it's not a Canada Soccer story it's and he and he's and and he's done a lot of media and will continue to do a lot of media in the US which is fine which is which is great more people talking about the game um the sport in this Federation Confederation like all that stuff is great but let's be honest it's a story because Jesse Mar should have could have would have been the US coach but now he's a Canada coach that's not going to change between now and 2026 that might change down the road at some point it wouldn't surprise me you know I think that this will be a game where he kind of wants to Stick it to a country that you know probably should have hired him instead of rehiring Greg be halter and just that process is what stands out it's it's not our comments it was his comments at the time about it that had that level of spice and and and reporters have gone on and try to get more comments and you know there's times where you know Marsh is kind of showing his cards but not really but I think he's balancing it all really well it's just it's going to be an overarching story if you follow American networks and Outlets it's going to be the story I prefer to just look at the Canadian story lines that's what stands out to me shout out to Moro yakio who stepping up and part of Jesse Mar Marsh's staff another really good story I really like this idea that the can the Canada Soccer is instituted where a different coach will come up each window and get that experience get that taste you have those two ustos within the Canada C I like I love stories like that there's enough watchable players in story Lines within this candidate team that that's fine by me all the other stuff great others can consume but that just won't be my focus all right just a few minutes left here gentlemen on the not quite preview but things that you're keeping the biggest eye on for the friendly coming up this weekend Olie uh I'm remiss to ask but because it's written down on my script and I and I follow the rules I'm going to ask it we we've already outlined the history how long it's been since Canada's won down there um the pool that we have some of the absences Etc I'm going to ask the question are Canada underdogs but I want to hedge it by the over arching um theme that I like to get to is should Canada go into this match puffing their chests out a little bit after Copa America and going on to to feel like they should be demanding more from themselves in this match and in Gold Cup and Nations League which will inevitably follow very very soon yeah sure but they are rightly underdogs like again 1957 like we could keep saying it's been a long time since since they've they've won this game whether it's been competitive or or been a friendly so until that changes you know you can't really say anything other than the US's his favorites but I think this team will have a significant amount of motivation and drive and also belief that next year should bring a trophy to to this program uh we don't know what the Gold Cup is is going to look like that could be very difficult if there's you know top quality invited teams from from other confederations uh but Nations league in March I I think they'll look at the the lineup of potential teams and and believe they can win that trophy it's F if the players don't believe that their underdogs I like a little bit of an underdog mentality to be honest with you let's be honest who they're playing against the United States is a country of what like 340 million people with an incredible wealth of resources in in cities and states and corporations that invest in sporting infrastructure there are high school stadiums they play football on Friday nights that we would love to have anything like that for soccer in this country let alone football it's just like we are an exceptional Underdog when it comes to taking on the United States same thing with Mexico a country with a history of success in the game and it's a country where their number one sport number two three four it's it's all soccer it's all football right so um there's nothing wrong with that and going into these games um despite an interim manager and a new manager Canada should still be considered underdogs heading into this game and again I'm fine with that they're a competitive Underdog it's not that Gap that was there before it simply doesn't exist based on the Excellence of these players on the field and what they've come together and become um but it's despite the odds right it's it's they're bucking a trend here and uh long may that continue let's keep on moving this in the right direction Saturday at Children's Mercy Park it's a crazy Saturday with some pretty big CPL matches around it as well you're going to want to keep lock to one soccer all afternoon and into the evening long we certainly cannot wait to see what the Canadians can do up against the Stars and Stripes time now to get to today's Visa women's football [Music] [Applause] report the young Reds are in action right now with the FIFA u20 World Cup with the results coming flying in it was a 3-3 draw against the French to begin the tournament and then the wins began to Pile in for Canada including meeting Fiji for the first time in an international match and Canada would go into that game expecting to beat Fiji handedly and they certainly did so just want to make sure you get the number right yeah that's right nine goals Canada scored in Oceania and within that lopsided scoreline a little bit of history as well that we'd like to share with you in case you missed it because the list we're about to show you has some pretty big names on it for Canadian youth International goal scores you go through some of them uh and we want to talk about the hattick that annabal shaku had scored it vaed her to the very top of that list oh yeah we've heard of Christine Sinclair and Olivia Smith Jordan Haida very very impressive for Annabelle who is certainly carrying the young Reds right now and getting a lot of contributions from teammates as well I'm not going to make the mistake Oliver plot of saying is she the next Christine Sinclair or does the future of the program hinge on her back but I will ask this instead how important is it for the likes of Annabelle and Olivia Smith to really come into this senior national team soon and make a positive impact yeah I mean the impressive thing about this boards is you know obviously all time International youth goals goes up to the E20 level which is is what chck and Smith playing at right now she's only 17 um like she's got a few more years of of Eligibility at this level so looks like a really promising player nine and N now for the u20s again at that young age um playing for Notre Dame a top school in in in women's soccer in the NCAA so she looks like someone who's going to have a bright future at the professional level and and hopefully can add some Firepower which is is always in demand with with the senior team GTH how happy would we be to go into a women's International window and worry about who's going to score that will always be the case where is Alonso Davis's best position and will the national team score goals you're right you're right it's no one's it's no one's fault when it comes to the women's team because those shoes that you need to fill those shoes of Christine Sinclair how do you fill them you know a record setting player that's just not an envi enviable position for any young player to be in to say hey I'm the next one so pump the brakes a little bit just let see how the process plays out but it's it's not an easy position to fill no it's not but we are excited nevertheless to see the potential down with the youngs congratulations to Annabelle chuku for becoming the all-time International youth goal scoring leader for this program let's get to today's Tony bet top [Music] picks football lines presented by Tony Betton the producer of the program today Gareth wheeler has given you both a treat asking you about your clubs in their upcoming matches for United minus 132 favorites against Southampton it's a must-win for United coming out the window already but I can't back him to win Southampton by the way is the second most possession in the in in the Premier League that's wild to me just after Spurs I know that the Newcastle were down to 10 men I can only bet on the total and that's the over in any Manchester unit game over the total in this game Oliver Platt wol it is famous for being home to Oliver Basset it is also famous for being your club's upcoming game The Dons plus 121 at home look at thaton manager rampton manager Russell Martin has came from the MK School of uh possession without purpose which is what we do best and I would expect more of that here we one win and three losses to start the season so let's put your money on WS one soccer today the program where we always leave on an uplifting note for Gareth wheeler and Oliver plot we thank you for joining us Andy Canada we'll see you tomorrow in the CPL and then Saturday don't miss it one so [Music]
