CanMNT πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ vs. Mexico πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ (September 10, 2024) | International friendly | Matchday Live PRE-GAME SHOW

it had to Beed inside youo giveway GRE David through the legs lar to [Applause] David and that's it it's masterful for Marsh's men the Canadian men have made their way from Kansas City where they defeated the Americans 2-1 on Saturday night to Arlington Texas where tonight they take on another force in conap the Mexicans inside AT&T Stadium Mexico coming off a victory of their own from this past weekend 3-0 over New Zealand a nice start under new yet familiar coach Javier but the Mexicans are winless in their last eight matches versus North American opponents will that continue tonight the Canadians are undefeated in their last five matches on a American soil and now they seem to have found their scoring Touch under Jesse March it is Match Day Live right here on one soccer hello everyone Canada versus Mexico Andy patrilla Jordan Wilson and Christian jack with you so a big win on Saturday as we know the first time the Canadians have beaten The Americans on American soil since 1957 and even though it was a friendly the American Media Jordan was absolutely reeling after that loss so where does this put Canada that win in your opinion I feel like for me A lot of times when you think about Canada and the the United States when it comes to soccer football there's that little brother brother aspect a little bit but right now I love and I'm relishing the way the Canadians are playing and feeling because they're about to do something that they haven't done KJ before and that is beat the Americans and beat Mexico in the same calendar year they're about to do it in in a few short hours yeah look there's a lot of different things to look into right I mean you mentioned the US media they weren't very happy they haven't been happy for a while that's that problem not ours um the Mexican media paid attention they've been very positive about what Canada did in all of the discussions Mexico been talking about this national team non-stop since the New Zealand game when they beat them 3-0 on the weekend because it is just an enormous story in in Mexican sport you know there is their number one sport the way they cover the sport is admirable it's everywhere and there's been you know reading a lot of media speaking to people in Mexico there's been a ton of respect for this Canadian team right now but I think internally most importantly is that there's just something very special Brewing that they know it they know that they it's very difficult in an international window to go from one window to another with momentum you got individual issues with clubs and different things what Jessie Marsh has taken in here it's just carrying on from that cup America experience well let's take a look at what this squad's been able to do and evolve under Jesse Marsh just nine games under him but look at what they've already been able to accomplish right the the goal is draw against France fourth place finish Copa America I just mentioned the first win on American soil against the United States and five of the nine matches against teams ranked number 11 or higher so can can ukj put into context what he's been able to do in in pretty much a short period of time yeah look it's been quite simply remarkable uh what he's been able to do no doubt about it what I like about it is that he's clearly the face of Canadian football at the moment yet anytime he can he still allows the players to take the publicity and I think that's really important what he's doing behind the scenes is immense it's not just with the national team it's with youth programs it's with the Canadian Premier League it's with the under 20 team and getting more team you know more games for them he understands he deeply cares and that's what I go back to our match night shows when this man was first hired that's where I started with are you a good person do you fundamentally care about the game in this country to move it forward yes it was sweet for him of course to go and beat the US of course that meant everything but you know what he's building here is complete belief amongst the top players that we're seeing here as stako Len and everybody else but the other players you know the growth of pool coming through he's building a pool of players knowing that he's got to make it deeper and strengthen it and the other play play that come in we saw Ali Amed we saw Schwan we've seen other players get chances we can see ozorio today the moment they play for this team they know there's a standard that they have to keep up to there's unity and and for me in the modern day when you look at managers it's how do you get the bottom guy to play their best football and the top guy to be motivated and that's clear with Canada when you watch them play so from from all parameters when you're looking at it it's never perfect but nine games in he looks like he's been coaching them for two years the way that they respect him the the way that there's chemistry within the way that the the team is playing and and players we all know that they knew each other but to get on the same page and be disciplined I think that's another level that he's added I always say managers they're selling something and the only reason why they'll be successful is if the players are buying it and they're buying whatever you sell them it's working let's take a look at candidate starting 11 brought to you by GE so some changes here from that game against the United States we are going to see a Dane St Clair gets the start in Gold tonight Liam Miller will also be in this one over Jacob schafberg as you see Ali Ahmed there still staying in Jonathan osor is in Jonathan David will be starting on the bench let's begin with the last man standing uh known as the last Defender the goalkeeper there what do you make of St Clair getting the start you know I feel for him a little bit in terms of the fact that he had a a very good goal Cup in my opinion um it was unfortunate that that Canada didn't go further in that tournament losing to the us but he had that moment and he took it and then it just seemed that Max kpo stood on his head at the right time and then there was no looking back but this is still a more than confident keeper that is going to get games for Canada KJ and in these moments when you're playing in the Netherlands and he's getting hit like this in the face he's blocking shots he's a great young goalkeeper he'll be in that 2026 roster but for me it's it's just one of those things where you're just a little bit behind kpo but you got to go take these moments tonight yeah everything you said Is Right Jesse Marsh was torn over this decision because Max kpo has become an enormous pillar in this side not just on the field but as a leader the mental toughness that he brings but as he went to bed last night he leaned he he knows he leans on that ability to know that I have to lengthen the deepen the pool so if you're giving other chances to Schwaner and ahed you can't speak out of one side of your mouth and do something else so like I think they know what they've got with Max Dame played very well against Uruguay it's another opportunity for him to play Mexico for the first time in another big game well someone else they know very well he's a veteran on the squad is Jonathan Osorio but what does he bring to the lineup you know he did everything that Marsh asked of him and I think it was out of character a little bit I mean that with respect in terms of assor as an attacking player but when they played uh this past cope America and he had to sub in when when con was out or when when Marsh decided to play him in the quarterfinals against Venezuela he did everything box to box defended well and even the third place game against Uruguay I thought he was exceptional there he did all the dirty work and this is a guy you know that is going to finish KJ in front of goal but those runs that you have to make and and accompany you stack you on the Midfield it is difficult to do but I think he did that and relish that role with a smile yeah I mentioned Saturday I expected him to start today I think they it's just Mexico is just a better opposition for him first of all that's who he played against to get his first 90 minutes many years ago he scored against them in last Decker he scored there for TFC as well but he did it in the World Cup qualifier he works well in tight spaces and he's going to press well he's going to use that energy that he wouldn't have got out of David he ran David to for 90 minutes almost on the weekend whether he comes in for a few minutes today you've got to be careful with these guys with their Club form David's played a lot of minutes already for Leland Champions League qualifiers a lot more than D than Davies and oakio and others for example so you always knew that you had to rotate Jonathan and I think ooro is the perfect match for this team let's take a look now at Mexico starting 11 brought to you by GE it's been more than a year since Mexico has won back-to-back games they're hoping to get the consecutive wins here tonight the three goals they scored on the weekend were as many as they got in the four previous matches and we know head coach new old head coach ja you AGA this is his third stint as head coach of the Mexican national team what do they bring here KJ well there's a lot of uh unknowns about Mexico you know they've been talking about this team as I said earlier for weeks in the Mexican national team um they made six changes again from the game against New Zealand um you know I I do think you know when you've got Alvarado you bring Pace we know what he can bring we saw him in the Champions Cup against Forge as well he's played a lot he's one of three players in this team who played in that game that we mentioned in Edmonton the last time they played Canada on in November so look this is a team in transition they've lost Nations League finals they're not happy there they've got to try and find a way to win knockout football in the World Cup uh and it's another big game for them and their old manager yeah they're going to be disciplined defensively they attack with six seven bodies going forward you're going to see Canada being tested but I'm excited to see that Midfield battle in the middle between these two sides yeah should be a good matchup here tonight between Canada and Mexico that's what we're bringing you here on the network tonight won soccer we're also the home of the Canadian Premier League this is match week 23 um just two handfuls of games to go here gentlemen in the regular season and then we're going to start talking some playoffs so pretty excited those are the matchups keep your eye especially on Valor and then yes Cavalry trying to catch Forge as well just as Atletico Ottawa is well after an impressive Summer with the national team Moyes bombo became a household name and made the move from MLS to League up an impressive yet hardworking path to success for the center back we'll talk about him next on one soccer [Music] [Applause] degree 72-hour non-stop protection anti-perspirant with motion partner in 5 years we'll be doing this but in Japan in 5 years my family will be joining me I'll be living in the city not living in the city in 5 years I'll be king of the Court I'll be playing for Canada I'll be playing for Canada in five years where won't I be in five [Music] [Applause] years thank you Canada for making dreams come true we're with you all the way Moyes bombo may have become an overnight sensation with Canadian soccer fans but his path to success was anything but overnight a lot of hard work that took him through various levels of the game and in just four years he went from League one Quebec to the top league in France playing for nice last year we saw bombo with the national team for the first time and he originally was used as a midfielder but he's thriving as a center back let's take a look at his evolution sh e e go head-to-head against them it's going to be it's going to be a good fight so I'm really excited how has this player evolved KJ he's he's very very special and you know I'm really excited to see him evolve I brought some clips I want to show people at home just to see how much more trust Jesse Marsh has had I think he's been the biggest climber uh under Marsh in terms of the evolution of what we've seen I I picked this clip first of all because I just want to remind people Jordan just how close we were to beating France just watch this aoro getting into the box you'll hope that we see that today um but the reason why I bring that is look you can commit that many men forward against the French because of what is about to happen here when you don't actually keep the ball and there's this guy I don't know if you've heard of him he plays for France he's called kilan mbappe it's pretty good so we're going to pause it right here and you can see down here at the bottom so now they've lost the ball okay so here is mbappe versus bombito at the bottom and you've got Canada committing all these men forward in a nil n game and you can count them right there if you want I'll do it for you it's eight and you've got mbappe breaking away but look at his body position and he's already learning where he needs to be he's not fronting up he's not standing straight he's standing on the side play it through and what I'm going to show you a clip of why why it's so beneficial because when that ball comes forward he's able to go right away as Canada leads him back now look at remember that play and now look at this one again this is the weekend three four 5 6 7 eight Canada have committed eight men um that means two are not there that's the two Center back so when you commit that many men forward you can do that because you can give up half a pitch play it through when you've got the athleticism that you've got behind you the United States understand this you know they got pressed for fun on this game play W play long try and get through and now they play into a ball into balagan who's one of the best strikers in conquer CF posted up with bombo one 1 V1 but play it through look what happens not only does he have the physicality and the smarts to read it he's got the anticipation and the strength and the athleticism to blow by him now now today we're going to see Mexico play in tight spaces so I picked this play for a reason this is the Dutch game in tight spaces they pick it up in the half space the midfielder this is bomito here on this side and he anticipates by his body position this ball coming into this space and how he's going to do it this all comes from anticipation and reading the game play it through again and see what he's able to do by understanding that and getting his body positioning in the right place to athletic and have the athleticism for Canada to regain possession and play again and Jordan this is another part of his game where physically he can post up against players and for me when you look at Jesse Marsh's system with bombo it there brings out a lot of insecurities in center backs because you have no protection all these clips that you brought out there's now yakio K and front shielding they they're One V one and they have to go and defend bombo Has the strength the pace but most importantly the composure to deal with situations where most players would be feeling insecure yeah and this is the last one again where he understands them reading anticipation this is played into pisti this is something the US has worked on again you've got Strikers breaking through and look at his body positioning look how he's learning to grow he's there ready to go because he understands where he needs to go he needs to be on his horse back here and winning it and again Watch what he does by using all of his athleticism and what he can do this is a player who has a lot of physical gaps So Physical strengths in his game and and as he does it the Gap in his game next for me is going to be all about concentration and understanding that if you want to reach the elite level you cannot have any major mistakes and where he's playing right now in France he's going to Excel and we're seeing more and more that from him you know there was so much hesitancy especially from the Canadian fan base when the friendlies were announced against France and Netherlands and then we saw the way the Canadians performed against them and now it seems that the big teams are who the fans and who the players even want to face why are they better equipped to do so well I just think they're mentally tougher and you know they've just got an edge about them the fact that they played these two big teams in Europe Jordan they played in cop America they're playing another game in hostile envir this has been the biggest Evolution for Canada for me is their maturity their behavior on the pitch and their ability to never be really flustered by anything that's going on and that's another sign for me that not only are the comfortable on the field but mentally they're really tough I think they're names that we've always said which I totally agree with you KJ but now they're almost veterans Theos the David the Davies like these are young men growing up that have played so many games so they feel good and ready for for the tests that are ahead and a lot of them were part of that big game against Mexico that was a few years ago many of you probably remember these scenes KJ and I we remember having a sit in them it was the last time Canada Mexico squared off in a crucial World Cup qualifier famously turned the ice tekka that night Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium hosted one of the coldest FIFA matches in history as temperatures plummeted to minus 7 in front of 44,000 fans Canada's Kyle lren scored on both sides of halftime and L Rouge held off LT for a famous 2-1 win in the Rockies the stakes not as high tonight but another good result for Canada would go a long way in preparation for 2026 kickoff coming up on one soccer Canada's Men's National Team on one soccer is Canadian team play on Saturday schelberg and David with the goals on route to a convincing think we should say 2-1 victory over the United States the first win on American soil for Canada since 1957 it was truly an impressive performance but the result stands out and another result here tonight could mean even bigger things as Canada set to embark on a year playing for two trophies both the conaf Nations league as well as the conaf Gold Cup a another statement win would set the stage for quite the year in the buildup to 2026 are Canada now the team to beat within the conap region another big
