ULTIMATE Mexico πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ vs. CanMNT πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ MATCH PREVIEW | Presented by tonybet

hello everybody and welcome on in1 soccer today Andy Petrillo Jordan Wilson Gareth wheeler with you uh I am in the nation's capital not that you can really tell by two lamps behind me but in case anyone's wondering why I'm in a hotel room I am in the beautiful nation's capital uh where we know is the home to Atletico Ottawa but that's not what we're going to talk about right out of the gate here gentlemen we are going to talk about the Canadian national team uh because as you saw right here on one soccer it was Canada versus USA yes it's a friendly but when these two Nations go head-to-head is it ever a friendly bragging rights are always on the line and we know that in the US OFA they're not pleased with the result in Canada very very pleased so it was a 2-1 victory for Jesse Marsh and his crew the first time the Canadians beat The Americans on American soil since 1957 it was also the ninth game under Jesse Marsh after he took over in May and this is what he had to say about the performance I think the group um has uh evolved and continue to show belief and uh and excitement at what we're doing um and again I've said from the beginning that they're incredible group of young men they love each other and love playing for the national team and I'm just trying to reward their efforts by continuing to challenge them to grow and get better and be more aggressive and understand the keys and and the things that I think can help make them better players and a better team so it was fun fun tonight you know again we made things a little bit more difficult than we needed to but we're moving in the right direction no question so Wheels let's talk about the team because you know we wax poetic about a lot of the players after that game but what do you make of the team and maybe what your biggest takeaway is and how you're seeing them play Under Jesse Marsh um my biggest takeaway is that what we're seeing is showing to be more and more repeatable for Jesse Marsha's team going up against big teams better teams at least according to the FIFA rankings and you can make the argument punching above their weight but maybe this is their weight class that's something that we may have to get used to to a certain degree because in that game there was one side that was Superior than the other and it was Canada and it's despite you know it's funny listening to some of the reactions from American pundits coming out of that game you st hold it I think he still me a shirt by the way but it means like it's Canada like Canada like it's still it's still surprising I think it's still some people are having a hard time letting this snc in how good this team actually is yes the Americans were poor in that game but give kenned a credit here the work that they put in this pressure the athleticism they show the togetherness the way that they're connected as a unit this is turning out to be repeatable and in the buildup to 2026 I mean this is significant because they're slowly becoming a team that I wouldn't want to play them especially in home soil and we'll see what more games on home soil hopefully look like over the next two weeks but if you are one of the big dogs you got to come out and you have to expend an incredible amount of energy to beat this fully committed fast athletic aggressive intense Canada team it's going to be difficult I think the one thing that we haven't seen uh because kennet have played you know Argentina the top rank team in the world they played them twice they play the US they played Mexico they played the Netherlands they played some really good teams here what if what they they play a lesser like you know like a a team that they might be more on the front foot I think that we need to see what that looks like because an expanded World Cup that they could be drawn against some weaker sides and you just want to see Canada to be a little bit more clinical but in games like this it's becoming more and more convincing by the game it's just how committed they are Andy and wheels that's what sticks out to me like this is a team that everyone's buying in and still pressing in the 85th minute I think there are things to tweak obviously as you go forward and Jesse marshia knows that we that's apparent but I think for a team that was so disconnected on and off the pitch at times there was so much going on to get them all um drumming and going to the same direction is is huge and you you see the commitment you can see players that look we're talking about Jacob Schaffer before didn't even know to get into camp and now it looks like he knows exactly who he is knows exactly where he needs to be and that for me that's a marsh effect that's someone coming in and saying this is what I need you to do which is actually who you are as a person hardworking loves to go forward I need to go out and be play unhinged still be disciplined but be your best version of yourself and they're doing that so with this team and and there comments of Jesse Mar saying that he wants to coach or he'd rather coach Canada than the states and I think what sticks out to me when he says that is I feel like it's almost better easier being the Chaser than the one to be chased like with the Americans and all that's put on them is supposed to be this this great nation that goes really far in Canada we're new to the party as much as people in this country know that there's Talent here on the main stage in big tournaments and Copa and Gold Cup and World Cup you're still looking at and people are still saying that like Canada these guys I think Marsh relishes the fact that he's coaching a team that has huge potential but the expectation for them to be a top Nation winning all the time is not there so he is the guy to bridge that guy happen to get them going and I could totally understand why he's excited to coach his team I also feel like the Americans are a bit salty that it's an American coaching the Canadians too because they're like well they beat the Americans coached by an American I'm like okay I get it you can have that yeah whatever if that's what makes you happy if you feel like in some way you're still part of Canada's success okay great but what I will say and I get that coaches in the past and I get that John Herdman oftentimes it kind of felt like he was stuck between a rock and a hard place right because he wanted to go out and win trophies and win stuff but at the same time understanding that he had to get young players in but I felt like the young guys maybe never really did kind of get in or get that chance in a way that one thing I do like that Jesse Marsh is doing here guys is he's going out to win he'll start his top dogs but then you see these other guys getting sprinkled in he's substituting them in like seeing a guy like a free like we're seeing these guys who are getting into games because he does still have that eye on 2026 and the way he's doing it seems seamless the timing seems right so I'm also liking the way he's getting young players into the squad few minutes here few minutes there it doesn't matter the way he even started them again like a lot of the other guys Copa America it's really working with the way he's doing it um but we know that they have another game coming up in this window September 10th once again right here on one soccer it will be Canada now traveling to Texas to take on Mexico here's what Jesse Marsh had to say about the team preparing for that matchup we're going to watch the game closely tonight because with a new coach in aguer um it'll be interesting to see exactly how he wants to play and what they look like um super tons of respect for for Mexico great football in country uh great culture in their national team um and and we know it'll be a big test so we can't you know I want them to enjoy the night I gave them dinner on their own so they can go out and have a nice night but then I told them you know the only way to really capitalize on all these moments is to continue to push forward and be ready for the next match and I'm sure they will be oh he gave them a dinner on their own it's a big deal when you're in Camp because you got to do things together no you always together together but dressed up and yeah it's a full thing let them go out and have dinner on their own that matters let them disconnect a little bit cuz I think they they were probably a little hurt that they didn't get to go to the chief's game when they were in Kansas so he's throwing them a bone but either way Jordan I mean uh you know it's once again it's a friendly but these are perennial contenders the Americans and the Mexicans in cona cap so you want to go out and you want to make a statement and we know that Mexico has struggled as well recently of course you know with the new coach as well in Javier we know that they too did not look good in Copa so what challenges though do you still think that they provide here against the Canadians I think is a great challenge playing Mexico but the time that you're playing them right after you just played the Americans and you're the better side for the majority of the match I think you're going to play the Mexicans when they attack and just looking at um the goals that they've scored recently obviously beating New Zealand 3-0 but even at Copa America when they go forward six seven numbers they really commit and really want to play attacking football but obviously on the contrary that's that's fine for Canada because there aren't too many teams in conquer C that can counter the way Canada does however it's holding on now in those moments with two midfielders and how they're going to defend and and what they bring I feel confident if Canada come with the same discipline organization and humility and uh the the willingness to suffer in moments that they did in the match and run and work hard that they can go and take Mexico this is a time as well to just push it another meter if you have a window and you play and beat the Americans and you're top for majority of the match and then you go and play Mexico as well in Texas and you beat them you could start feeling good you could start feeling like that the tides are turning a bit so this is a huge moment for Canada to really get things sorted it's also uh we should remind our viewers the first time that Canada's played Mexico since the ice tekka so it's appropriate that Sam atak being called into the team uh there'll be no piles of snow in Arlington Texas but maybe they have some kind of surprise set up for Jerry's World on Tuesday night um look like if Canada go on to beat this Mexico side and they're going to be a little bit different under agir uh was a previous manager leading into the 2010 World Cup for this side um and he's the former Kyle aens former manager last season at mayorca he is much more defensive oriented than maybe some of their recent managers of the past so they're going to be very well organized and difficult to break down I I watched a little bit of that game against New Zealand the one thing um the Canada press which was was so in integral for to for their success against the United States the US were incapable of moving it out the back I thought that was particularly on their left side of their defense they weren't very good Mexico or team was playing for us re L it was just part Canadian that day oh jeez it wasad it was a no it was a tough watch like they really miss Anthony Robinson on that left side as well Mexico are technically better and I think they're more capable of playing through that press so Canada might need to show some different looks maybe come at things a little bit of a different way but it's going to be a good test because that's what keneda kind of road to success and Mexico this Mexican side does play a lot slower so we'll see what pace they play this game at and how Canada might be able to change the pace at times this is a Mexican side as well Andy like a lot of their players play in Lega MX like typically they'd have you know a decent number of players playing abroad there's there's Santi Jimenez who leads the line plays for fyord and he's really good for clubs scores a lot of goals was linked to some big clubs this summer but for Mexico just four goals and I think 32 33 games for Country it's just for whatever reason it hasn't quite happened yet for the national team as well so it's going to be a different kind of test in a pro Mexican crowd it was kind of alarming to maybe organizers they played at the Rose Bowl which is a huge Stadium there wasn't very many people there but you expect it to be a big crowd in Arlington Texas so different kind of game and and finally just going back to back the amount of energy that kenada put into that game is it repeatable on that quick of a turnaround because it's a big ask physically speaking for a lot of these players to put in that kind of shift speaking of physically we know that Alistair Johnson came out early in that game replaced by Richie Lara because of a hamstring tightness and now it appears he has been replaced in Camp by Sam ataki who was originally called to Camp was replaced because he was dealing with an injury I guess he's okay so now he's come back we know that in that game against the United States that Derek Cornelius was also subbed out as well took a knock to the Head had the bandage on for a little bit but then still came out because of that haven't heard anything on him so hopefully that's okay you always want to be very careful uh when it comes to the head but yes Sam atbi has been called into the squad not even quite sure I mean maybe I'll just like a little bit here like I I don't know Wheels what even kind of playing time you're predicting for Sam atak because I don't know if he's like completely fresh if we can have that conversation of him being the left back and Alonso being higher up or maybe that conversation's kind of dead in the water I don't know but are you anticipating a lot of playing time for Sam atakoy probably not a lot they're probably G to proceed with a little bit of caution but he did come on and play in Major League Soccer on the weekend for Vancouver white caps in a nil-nil draw against FC Dallas so if he comes on for maybe the last 15 minutes I think that's reasonable to expect and I do what I would hope at that time is to see and I just want to see what it looks like okay for experiment sake is davies's playing in front of vaku and we talk about Davy's Pace with bombo across that back line provided you know the recovery runs across the back what about Davies in his Pace going on the press and what he may be be able to open up playing the shaffle BG role I just want to see it because we know that those two players have a really good connection down that left hand side one is building between schafberg and Davies it doesn't have to be from the start because I think that Marsh prefers him to play at left back but I'd love to see Davies pressing that way with this team with all that pace along the front line I'd love to see it maybe maybe you get wish there's no secret though that Jesse Marsh wants to get his hands on adaku in Camp like like everyone else you could see the the strides that a schafberg has made bombo Cornelius right this is nine matches that he's been in charge and he's really had just a one and a half windows with this squad and a Copa America that was extended and and they went further than most people expected so they got more time but Sam adaku a vital part of this Canadian team he wasn't there and with so much potential and when you watch the major league soccer and you see him play and when he's fit like how Dynamic he is and what he brings a guy like Jesse Marsh saying this is a piece that I need to see around the group granted all these guys they went to battle they went to Qatar together they know each other but Jesse Marsh doesn't know them all of them in that setting adaku is a missing piece so even if it's for two days three days two trainings he wants to get him there have his hand around his shoulder make sure he looks at the press and how things are but I see him coming in that 15 minutes and there is a world where maybe he's playing that left back and you push davies's forward and maybe caner is already winning by a goal and Davies says look this is my time to shine but you can flirt with ideas and that's why Wheels we so excited to see adaki come into Camp so the fact that he broke our heart then put it back together and now he's coming in now story for sure yeah and yeah it's true and I I think Jess Marsh you're right I think he'd love to get his hands on adak Kuby because just of how integral he was even during World Cup qualifying World Cup like we just know what kind of player this guy is and then the injury bug has decided to visit and is not going away sometimes it's like that relative that just says I'm I'm flying in from Europe for a week six months later no never Happ to you not that I'm speaking for personal experience anyway Italy specifically Z I'm so sorry no I'm kidding let's send things off gentlemen with our Tony bet top [Music] picks I'm going to toss it on over to you Wheels because we do have to focus on some conom Bol World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday Colombia Argentina Venezuela Uruguay what's happening what you doing what are you telling the people I'm taking Colombia on the handicap in this game um still no l Miss I know I that game at in the final of of of Copa America Columbia were right in it they completely ran out of steam they ran they ran out of gas at the end they'll remember that is being played in Colombia a very difficult place to go um look Argentina won 12 straight games like it's just an unreal stretch of games and obviously no Leonel Messi over the course of this window as well yeah and yeah I I think that Columbia is in a decent spot here to Come Away with something whether it's a full three points I'm not quite sure play him on the handicap okay um Venezuela Uruguay little quick there do you have anything there I like Uruguay in this game I know they're at Venezuela it's very difficult to travel here but this yodu side is just about complete I think it's at about one plus 135 plus 140 I just don't have that that exact number but you're getting them on plus money here uh I would back Uruguay in this game yeah they're plus 140 there you go all right good stuff gentlemen as always to everyone watching One soccer today thanks for tuning in we'll see you next time
