Boston College Dominates FSU 28-13: Florida State vs Boston College Reaction & Analysis

when I saw that Florida state was a 16 and a half Point favorite over a Boston College Squad with a mobble truly dual threat quarterback a great set of running backs an NFL offensive lineman I thought that maybe once again the general public in Vegas were overestimating the seals but I had no clue and I did not think for a second that Boston College would come into dope Campbell Stadium and own Florida State pound for pound and for all four quarters would look like the better team welcome back college football fans it's college football with Sam here please like the video subscribe to the honest and say that my worst prediction for the 202 before season has already bore its fruit the fact that I thought Florida state would be the best team in the ACC that I thought they would bounce back and avenge their playoff snub from 2023 going 13-0 and competing in the college football playoff that's not happening not one bit the same things the same things that Florida State struggled with against Geor Tech came up again here and it was a lack of Integrity a lack of strength a lack of conditioning a lack of athleticism and scheming on the lines of scrimmage again Florida state has Patrick Payton DJ Lundy Azariah Thomas fentrell Cyprus on defense and they have several other players on the offensive side of the ball as well and on the offensive line offensive linemen who many thought would grade out well including myself this year like Maurice Smith Their Center and Darius Washington their tackle and go back to the defensive line Joshua farmer Daryl Jackson Jr it does not matter it does not matter Boston College went into dop Campbell stadium and they wrecked for what I can say now is a sorry program and a sorry team now some may say I'm taking it too far there but we now have a two game sample size with Florida State we have double the sample size that we had after their week Zero Performance against Georgia Tech which was a much Superior performance compared to the one they put out today at home on Labor Day by the way happy Labor Day to all of you but I'm I'm watching this game and what I'm expecting to happen with Boston College and Thomas castalanos and Kai robishaw and Tre Shawn Ward and Drew Kendall on the offensive line and Azie trapillo and Logan Taylor at tackle giving castalanos all the time in the world and the running backs all the space in the world to make their moves I to a large degree expected that what I didn't expect is Florida state only scoring 13 points on Boston College going three of 14 on third down one of three on fourth down against a Boston College team that last year was six- six now last season they did play Florida State competitively but Florida State played a lot of teams competitively and Boston College last season was not a good or great team they were an average team with probably an above average ceiling and a below average or bad floor there's a reason why Jeff Halley left the Boston College job to be a defensive coordinator in the NFL in the spring Bill O'Brien comes in clearly has done a heck of a job in the preseason Boston College looked conditioned they looked strong they did well in coverage and Well on defense from what I could see but then again Florida State may just be that atrocious offensively U after all went 21 of 42 for 272 yards a touchdown and a pick he looks no better than some of his worst moments at Clemson and it's very clear that Jonathan Smith coached and schemed him up during his time at Oregon State where he was much more productive on an average basis again the final score Boston College 28 Florida State 13 this is an instant reaction here and from the beginning from the very beginning you saw that Florida state would have problems again defensively it was a dropped wheel route by tra Ward that saved Florida state from surrendering a touchdown on their opening Drive Boston College punts Florida State goes three and out Florida State then fails to stop Boston College on the ground it's 0 at the end of the first quarter but Boston College by that point had over 10 minutes of possession in a single quarter they had 21 plays to Florida States three at one point they had 29 plays to Florida State's six the disparity in plays in Pace in game control could not have been more apparent Boston College had the ball for 39 minutes and 9 seconds damn Florida state had it for only 20 minutes and 51 seconds and Boston College had 52 52 talk about pulling a PJ Fleck from Minnesota or a Paul Johnson from Georgia Tech or I don't even know the comparisons to draw here 52 carries three of them were knees so 49 16 passing attempts Boston College had 263 rushing yards two rushing touchdowns they had 5.1 yards per run attempt 6.6 yards per pass attempt two passing touchdowns castalanos had a very good game same with robishaw same with trewn Ward uh turbo Richard even had some good carries so Boston College I think better than I and many others expected they could be better than their four and a half game win total but Florida State could also be this bad Florida state passed the ball 42 times only ran it 16 times because they averaged 1.3 yards per carry I'm a big 10 guy so before I get to the the game MVP which is obviously Thomas castalanos very good game by him I want to give a game comparison like reading through these stats and telling you them all and piecing together through the box score and looking at everything as is when the clock hits zero what I watched on my TV throughout the 60 Minutes throughout all four quarters this game reminds me of in hindsight a little bit of Illinois versus Wisconsin 2022 where Wisconsin had a little bit of a rough start already had two losses but you think that you know they have enough Talent at the lines of scrimmage on defense offense and they have brillan Allen at running back Florida State doesn't quite have that but Royo Williams and toili I think are two good players there that Wisconsin or in this case Florida State can bounce back and they can Crush what should be a team that could present some problems but should still be a win and potentially a dominant win it was anything but Illinois that day beat Wisconsin I think like 38-13 I forget the exact score they held Wisconsin to negative yardage ran for a bajillion yards on them even had a good day passing this is exactly what Boston College did to Florida State the following day Paul Christ was fired from Wisconsin now I don't think Mike norell is going to be fired from Florida State and that I think would be a bad decision but it was also a poor coaching job by Norvell by the defensive coordinator um not Alex Atkins he's the offensive coordinator Adam Fuller I don't know what Adams Fuller Adam Fuller's defense is anymore last year's unit was bad at stopping the run this year's unit was even worse so it's got to be something schematic and not just the players cuz they had Jared verse Braden Fisk many great players on the interior and exterior of that def line it's the same thing this year can't stop the run they have decent linebackers so it's it's no longer just the players it's not just portal busts happened it's coaching this is what I say on this show on this YouTube channel over and over and over again sometimes I feel like other analysts don't talk about coaching enough they don't it's like with Nebraska and Tony white last season they did not have an elite player on that roster they had Nash hutmacher Tommy Hill who had an elite ceiling but we'll have to see if they can live up to that this season they did not have an elite player on their defense last year but Tony white was such a darn good DC that he coached up all of those players and had Nebraska go from a defense that was horrific in 2022 to good great in 2023 he's a top 10 defensive coordinator nationally it is the same thing I think with Dean and in USC this year I don't think USC has an elite player on that defense a single one and in fact I thought they still looked very suspect against LSU but deanan Lyn is like an Einstein of defensive coordinators he attacked LSU's weaknesses Adam Fuller has not done that all this season was questionable at that last season and offensively Mike norvell's the play caller Atkins I think being suspended hurts the offensive Line's performance because he's the offensive line coach but play calling was not good DJ's strengths were not utilized and Florida State was running the ball clearly when it's like come on you got to pass it and when they passed it with DJ and you never want to pass it over 40 times or even 30 with him they were trying toward the boundary short it's like just heave it up it's like what I don't think it was Danny Cano but college football nerds on twit Twitter very wise group of guys much smarter than I am love to follow them they said just have him throw it up use his arm talent and see if you can come down with it it Florida state was only going to win this game if they got lucky breaks and that's brutal absolutely brutal that Boston College was the better team on the field and if they played tomorrow Boston College would beat him again if they played again tonight we're going to have round two beat him again me Florida state looks demoralized the fan base is angry the team is demoralized they quit at the end not exactly similar to Florida I think Florida State's better than Florida but there are a little bit of concerning similarities there almost by how those teams quit on their own home field when being challenged Boston College stepped up Thomas castalanos stepped up 10 of 16 for 106 yards two touchdowns 73 rushing yards that's why he is in my opinion the most valuable player of this game you could say it's Tran Ward 12 carries 77 rushing yards he had 61 receiving yards including a long reception of 42 he could be up there uh Kai roasa could be up there as well had a rushing touchdown long of 35 run 85 rushing yards in total had one reception for four yards and a touchdown I mean the running backs in this game were so so good the running backs actually had all of the touchdowns castalanos had a rushing one and two passing ones so correction on that statement but they had three out of four robishaw and Ward had a receiving touchdown and robishaw had one rushing touchdown Boston College by the way was 9 of 16 on third down and Castellanos was a big part of that whenever the pocket broke down he did a very good job of scrambling outside picking up as much yardage as he could avoiding unnecessary contact he did a very good job of improvised scrambling to pick up first downs or to get long gains I think he's an improved quarterback compared to last season and Bill O'Brien clearly knows how to utilize his team he does he's clearly still a heck of a coach even though the last time he coached in college football was over a decade ago back in 2013 with the Penn State n lines as a head coach he was the offensive coordinator at Alabama obviously in 2021 and 2022 who knows where Boston College goes on from here their next game is Duane then they have to travel to Missouri and then they host Michigan State and they host Western Kentucky that is their September slate for Florida State Florida state gets a buy then they host Memphis one of the better group of
