Detroit Lions Postgame Reaction & Press Conference: LA RAMS Week 1

for [Music] a [Music] [Music] [Music] all right all right I have no idea what kind of audio or anything we are about to have tonight and of course my voice is gone so this is going to be a quick one tonight there is so much to talk about with what we just witnessed tonight in this game some good lot bad uh but I tell you what we're going to have a lot to talk about in the morning I have so many notes for what went down in this game and uh are we concerned I don't I don't know if we should be concerned right now and of course YouTube is saying I have a duplicate stream key so this could just be an entire problem but we'll uh we'll see if we uh can roll through it tonight I don't even have the chat probably not going to be able to have the chat cuz it's not led me give me one second here see what happens when I do stuff from the road interesting one second okay let me pull it up on my phone because I'm not going to be able to have the chat open well I guess before uh before I get rolling here you guys got to tell me man what did you think about the game uh a game that many of us thought uh that this game was was in the bag again a lot of injuries suspensions uh last minute IR uh to the uh to the Rams defensive backs and again we thought that uh this game was in the bag and that's exactly what didn't happen Aman Rod disappeared from the game tonight Sam leapa disappeared from the game tonight but I told you guys all week long that the lions were going to Pound The Rock tonight and I was right that's what I expected but I did not expect absolutely did not expect for St Brown and Sam lorta to disappear I said that J was going to have a great game I failed when I said that no wide receiver was going to have over 80 yards but then again I mean the way Mo J Mo train here the guy takes the ball on a on a 5 yard Route and takes it 50 60 70 yards so that's uh that's big UPS to that kid he's going to be exciting to watch if he can continue that role and and and to be honest with you if he can continue that and Sam lorta and St Brown can get going this is going to be a very very Dynamic offense to watch this season here's what I will say though uh right away briland Dennis says we need another Edge rusher really really really bad Davenport had a better game than Aiden Hutchinson so if you think we need another Edge rusher then I guess we got to replace Aiden Hutchinson Aiden is about to get a scathing review from me tomorrow not tonight and it's going to be back by the review of the all 22 on Tuesday night if you're a member and you subscribe to the second tier you are going to have a private one-on-one review of the all 22 and we're going to look at exactly all of the notes that I've taken down today here's the one thing I'll say on Aiden because I'm not going to go deep off into Aiden right now you get that sack where you're the last man to get to Stafford and you start doing this dance here's what I would say one act like you've been there before you're getting your butt kicked this def this offense is crapping all all over you Stafford's doing whatever he wants to do the Run game all over you you're missing tackle after tackle after tackle no Edge containment again passing all over the middle of the field and part of that is because the linebackers are leaking because your Edge is broken your containment is broken and you go and do this dance yeah the sack was needed but what happens the very next player to right I mean as soon as staford gets back in the game he crabs all over again so I I want I would rather see Aiden make the play Get Up Get Back to the line and say okay great play guys let's let's do it again go be a leader go get your guys ready to go for the next play stick your stanky leg up here you know what dude like you got fooled tonight in in in many of the plays way out of position and it's the same thing that I've seen from Aiden for three seasons so I don't want to hear that we need another Edge when Davenport played a pretty damn good game he was the one that was affecting uh Stafford at the very beginning of this game so there's a lot to talk about and again uh it's all going to be backed by tape all of it so if you're a member if you're not a member join the second tier by Tuesday by 700 p.m. and you'll be in it so it's only $9.99 to get in and and we're going to review it together and I've got a whole list of notes I mean a whole list of notes I made notes all game long so we're going to look at very specific points in the game and talk about it but what I just told you was was one of my notes um and I want to review it I want to review that play uh other play that kind of stuck out the tyon Arnold uh pass interference the second one that looked like offensive pass interference if anything now our replays inside the game are not as good as they used to be we used to get really great reviews during the game uh of the play like as soon as the play happened uh they'd start throwing up the replay right away and and it's not happening I said the same thing last year they've made a change NFL wide where they're just not doing replays they don't want the fans to be all pissed off they don't want the refs uh to be crapped on you know and then whatever you guys get at home is is more than what we're getting in the game they don't want the crowd to get out of control is what they're trying to do uh that's my guess that's my take on it so what I witnessed was pretty solid coverage by tyon on that play if anything it looked like the receiver was holding his arm and then tyon wasn't touching the dude at all he was in the air and made a play on the ball uh Tyrion had a tough night at times he did we'll look more at it in the tape I have to see the tape myself I can't see everything nobody can so I have to see what else broke down but I would say for the most part uh he had a pretty pretty decent I'm not going to say good decent game for a first game uh definitely expected a lot worse Cooper cuff did whatever he want Matthew Stafford throws for over 300 yards but it wasn't just anarion when Andis rraw came in then you started to see a guy that could play Man Press R straw is going to be the best man press corner I think on this roster at some point he might even start get more action next week but as soon as he came in he got up on the line bumped and and was ready to go mono Amano I did not see that tonight we were stuck in some stupid Zone again not playing man and that's part of the problem you cannot you cannot play zone defense against Matthew Safford you just can't uh zone defense is going to eat you all the time uh you're going to get eaten alive by Matthew Stafford and that's exactly what happened um all right let me see what you guys are talking about here uh John Barfield uh Aiden was held all game long especially once aan came in so I mean that's been a typical response to Aiden um at you know I'm not going to say that he wasn't held at times um but what I notice out of Aiden 2 is he likes to flop he's trying to pull the LeBron all the time instead of just getting after it trying to make the play uh look it's been a complaint by lions fans now for two seasons straight maybe three that he's held all all game long if that's really happening I think that the flags would fly I think that Dan Campbell would probably um you know make some complaints and uh and that's not happening so again we'll look at the tape we'll see if it's really you know are they really getting held or is it is it something else uh Rona 99 Brandon hurt agree on the Zone yeah Zone you can't play zone against Stafford you just can't what I will say though I mean the way that the way that this game ended uh couldn't have been a better showing for this offensive line they were pissed they had a bad game uh this might be one of the best defenses in the league hands down um Jared verse was a problem um just about just about everybody in this this defense for for the Rams was a problem for our off offensive line and I guess what I'm what I'm looking at is why like what were they doing that that we we couldn't figure out and then what changed on the last drive because that offensive line was pissed they went in there and they just jammed that ball down their throat Montgomery came in with fresh legs good move by Ben Johnson uh but of course at times you know we would take demo out when things were working and and I thought that that was going to be a mistake and then they threw the ball Gibbs and Gibbs took it up up field for you know 10 yards or so and uh they said he was in bounds and that brings me to my next my next Point here 10-sec runoff again are you kidding me I thought I was having Deja Vu 10c a 10-second runoff rule again I need to see where that's in in the NFL rule book um H how is it that your team gets penalized and I apologize about the graphics I had a new graphic up I don't know what happened um how is it that that you you get penalized for a ref making a mistake yeah that was the other one I probably should have switched to the other one the refs make a mistake and your team gets penalized for I don't think that that's fair at all ever we've been through it too many times but it seems like we're the only team that it ever happens to now thankfully you know some would say that that that may have helped us it helped us get to overtime but if we had those 10 seconds would we have had another play to maybe go at the end zone would we have done something different they would have gotten gotten us another first down where we could have taken another shot at the end zone and just ended the game in regulation potentially uh my big shout out to the game Jake Jake Bates uh again this dude he gets to take some you know field goals right around the 15 yd line and I got my head between my knees and I'm just like you've got to be kidding me um Jake Bates misses those and he's been missing those all training camp long so I was a little bit nervous so he iced them both uh you know right through the uprights right down the middle you know as far as we could tell uh looked good and he looked good he looked confident uh so so big shout out to to Jake Bates for showing up in his first NFL game at home you guys tell me what what were the biggest concerns for you tonight for I I guess for me I mean obviously our offensive line was struggling at times uh we just couldn't get the ball moving consistently but the the biggest thing for me is is jarro G was under quite a bit of pressure and and he wasn't moving well tonight I mean you could tell that we were Rusty and and you could tell that we were starting slow my biggest concern is the fact that saint Brown and leaport both disappeared so my biggest question is those two or my biggest I guess what what I'm going to look at in the tape is what did the Rams do to us that we didn't do to them because whatever they were doing to us to stop our game which is living over the middle of the field where St Brown and lorta make the large majority of their plays and then get Yak after the fact the Rams did that exact thing to us and we could stop them so what was the difference what did they do that we couldn't do so I'm going to I'm going to take a look at that uh tomorrow after obvious after the morning podcast and um figure that out for Tuesday night because there there's something that we're missing uh the one defense that I wanted to see a lot tonight did not happen until the end of the game didn't happen single high safety more nickel uh the 335 look or uh it was a 326 look there for a minute we had six DBS in so both of those defenses would have been much better off used in the first part of the game when we are having trouble containing Cooper cup and when puka AA was in uh but C cup could do whatever he wanted tonight and again that doesn't make sense to me you have one receiver I mean Robinson actually you know he got he got loose a little bit too uh that Rams offense has some weapons they have some very talented wide receivers and they have some very talented defensive lineman and Edge players so both sides of the ball um pretty damn good team we'll probably see him again in the postseason they're probably going to be one of the best teams uh in the NFC hands down as long as they stay healthy we'll see what happens with with uh with puka um but very good team so I think that's that's another positive for tonight right this was a very difficult game Shawn McVey has probably been watching our film over and over and over since that game ended he's probably been waiting this game has been circled ever since it came out on the schedule and he wanted to make sure that everything that we did to them we couldn't do tonight and he locked us up they absolutely locked us up but your lions in fitting fashion go in at the end of the game and the the offensive line is pissed off and they just shove the ball down on their throat so standing on business tonight that was huge that that was that was huge for them to finish that way take the ball go home Big Boy bully ball like I said we're going home we're done we're done playing and that's what they did and they ended it yeah so Southwest line 26 yeah that sack that I'm that you're talking about you got to remember that uh he was last he was last to touch Stafford on the opposite side of the field I I wouldn't say that that play really helped much but again we'll look at the tape we'll we'll see what happened I just want to see Aiden I want to see Aiden do the things that that you know leaders do you don't you don't get up at you know and do a stanky leg whatever he was doing right when you're you're losing a game that you shouldn't be losing you're getting your butt kicked all over the field you don't do that no you again I'll I'll repeat myself you act like you've been there before you get up you go back to the Huddle and you get your guys ready for the next play or you get off the field right and you get ready to come in for the next play Hutch got pulled tonight I don't think you guys realize he got taken out very early in the game same thing we saw last year early in the season Davenport didn't get pulled they were rotating at times but Davenport uh got great pressure tonight Levi had great pressure in the very beginning uh Al mcneel had some success at times uh but again these are all things that I'm going to have to go over in finite detail in the tape because I was focused on watching tyon very often tonight um Andis when he came in Carlton I really wanted to see how these DBS were going to respond and I guess I was really shocked really shocked that we we used the same damn defense that we said that we weren't going to use we s Aaron Glenn saying that he wasn't going to use that that style of Defense he wanted to play Man Man Press and didn't do it didn't do it this didn't make any sense uh Wingo had a good game says Rona 99 I hope he did you know I I I would love to for the tape to to show that uh Mike K says McVey had Stafford throw the ball 49 times gof through 28 you know I think that's a detriment to the game tonight because if McVey would have went to the ground a little bit more where they were having a ton of success this game's over and I don't think the Lions win if they run the ball six seven eight more times tonight that game's probably done they they literally needed one more first down uh there with about 220 left in the game and they got backed up on a penalty and that's what saved our game tonight all they had to do is run the ball and get a first down it's all they had to do uh John Barfield says they had a swallow a shallow Zone in the middle of the field with safeties over the top bracketed the reer receivers over the middle uh you're talking about the Rams or you talking about the Lions man the Lions here's another thing that I was going to save till the morning but am I the only one they thought our Lions looked out of shape tonight that they they look slow they look sluggish there's a minute there where I saw pan just kind of just slowly waddling back to the Huddle like he was just gassed so I I'm going to I'm going to throw that back on Dan Campbell like get these guys in a pre-season game put him in a preseason get him some time to get acclimated we only had one joint practice you know with with the the Giants this year and that was in the first week of the preseason so they went you know three weeks without playing a real game and they're scrimmaging against their own guys but you guys that have been to training camp you know like this is not it's not like these practices are extremely difficult you know they're not out there doing Wind Sprints they're not out there running suicides you know they're they're going through their walkthroughs uh they're doing situational stuff it's it's all timed they get in they get out after a couple of hours but you're not seeing heavy heavy heavy conditioning on the field now we don't know what they're doing in the training room right we don't know if they're on treadmills for an hour you know we don't know if they're doing gassers we we have no idea what they're doing circuit training and I'm not saying like they're not in shape I mean these These are are you know great football men that are in great shape but there's a difference between being in great shape and then being in endurance type shape and they didn't look like they had great endurance tonight and maybe it takes us a few weeks but within a few weeks you could go down 0 and three and it's a different season so you can't get down in this league especially going up against two playoff teams back to back to start at week one and two overall I mean there's a lot there's a lot that went bad in this game and there's some really good positives in this game I think I think it's a little I'm leaning a little bit more towards there's a lot lot more to clean up uh I just believe that uh we're missing something right now I don't know what it is but I think the tape will tell us uh Peter Van Loven says Alliance had zero endurance this week well I'm glad I'm not the only one it feels that way um Mike K says pan probably didn't practice the last two weeks well I think he practiced uh but the question is how much endurance did they do Mike K says he hurt his ankle I didn't see that so that's good news um man uh St Brown that one play uh where he was kind of bent over backwards I thought his night was done and then Gibbs when he ran behind him uh behind his legs I thought he was done so it's very possible that St Brown probably suffered a couple of uh injuries tonight maybe minor injuries that were nagging that maybe it's why he didn't have a great night it'll be really interesting to see what pops up on the injury report this week I have a feeling we're going to have a ton I think it's going to be a lot um I guess to to kind of go back to the very beginning I was a little bit disappointed not to see James Houston on this roster tonight that didn't make any sense to me you have an opportunity to get after Stafford and DJ reader is out um why the guy's a pass rush specialist definitely could have used his speed to tonight Aiden couldn't get home again he gets sacks that are like end to play you know extremely broken situation he gets a touchdown sack you know a tap down sack whatever um missed a lot of tackles tonight too by the way uh but I guess the point that I'm trying to make here is we could have used a guy like James Houston to give you that that different style of speed a different different style of pressure I can't imagine that he he wouldn't have been utilized tonight and had some success man my voice is just wasted yeah healthy scratch doesn't make any sense to me uh ooh what's this with extra pickles it's a new name welcome in tonight St Brown stopped even running when Gibbs ran at him I didn't see that um but calling him a diva I don't believe that's St Brown something happened tonight obviously if St Brown and leapor couldn't get going uh that means that they had a pretty lockdown defense um you just you can't watch it all I've I've got to watch it in slow-mo uh Michael G says I was impressed with Davenport tonight I was too he did kind of get banged up towards the end of the game he had to come out for a second but he went back in um the Carlton Davis thing I don't know you know I don't have any updates yet on that I haven't looked at anything hopefully he's fine um if not I think that gives an opportunity to rraw you know to get in to get some more time I don't think that they would bump a Meek up to play outside I think that they'll put R straw in and I'm fine with that I think the r straw is going to be just fine uh but it's early look these guys are going to get tested you know tyion got tested tonight he went up against an incredibly difficult wide receiver uh Trio and one of the best Gunslingers in the game and I think he did a real good job it's going to it's going to take some time St Brown was terrible yes he failed to continue blocking see I think that St Brown Peter was was a little banged up I I think that the couple of those plays where players you know landed on the back of his leg or uh he was bent backwards on that one real awkward play I think that those probably banged him up a little bit uh and and he too looked tired he looked Gass and that's not St brown right St Brown usually is just the motor that keeps on going everyone just looked tired they just they looked I've never seen this in a week one on a Dan Campbell team where we just looked exhausted I mean were they just getting it put to him to where I mean they were just mentally and physically exhausted that they couldn't figure it out mentally and it was exhausting them physically could be um there could be any number of things that happen but I hope to figure it out and I hope that Dan Campbell figures it out uh it'll be interesting to to listen to what Dan says I haven't listened to anything yet um guitars and amps for Life says positives Mony was a beast J Mo arrives and baates came through to force the OT you know what the big positive is is I told you guys we were going to Smash Mouth this football tonight I told you this was going to be a running game and uh and I did not expect for J to have that much success uh but it was good to see let me see what the final stats are I haven't even looked at the final stats cuz my phone died like at the end of the fourth quarter as we were walking out the stadium and I forgot my extra battery oh let's see here super proud of J man super proud of J Mo tonight he took a couple of nasty Falls tonight that that one touchdown where he started to Dive In The End Zone and the guy got him in the back of the legs that's that's when things happen and thankfully it didn't I think that we escaped some big injuries tonight I really do I think there's going to be some some Nicks and some cuts and some some bruises uh and they're going to hinder these guys the rest of the season uh give it up for gof on that first down run right the uh the broken giraffe as I Callum uh at least he got it done Jared GF was 18 to 27 or 18 to 28 2117 yards one TD one interception Matthew Stafford chucked the ball 49 times 37 yards on 34 receptions sorry I'm trying to take my shoe off here one TD one in interception uh rushing so Monty largely did not have a whole lot going on in this game he picked up what about 50 60 yards in the last drive there so he had 17 carries for 91 yards and one TD to finish the game Kiren Williams got off to a great start uh he was very effective at points throughout the game but he only finished with 50 yards on one TD and I think that was another rock lock I'll have to go back and review the receipts but I think I said that that uh they wouldn't finish with more than 60 yards or 70 or whatever I said it was close to that on the ground Cooper cop man he had a game uh 14 receptions 14 receptions my goodness 110 yards uh but J J takes the day away tonight uh five receptions 110 yards one TD one long of 52 on nine targets so right around 60% reception rate tonight so not terrible uh Cooper cup was 14 of 21 that's an incredible number 21 targets and we couldn't bottle him up so you know Stafford's going to him the entire time but you don't you don't bracket him you don't put two guys over top of cup you don't roll the safety down come on like this is high school stuff Sam lorta 4 for 45 on five targets so it's not like he wasn't effective Ive he was just missing uh jir Gibbs four on 34 on six targets Aman rosing Brown three for six 13 yards uh David Montgomery had one catch for two and Brock Wright man Brock Wright was wide open a couple of times tonight and uh was just missed on the other side of the ball Cooper cup like I said 14 for 110 Tyler Johnson 5 of 79 Colby Parkinson who should not be doing anything 4 for 47 Demarcus Robinson another really good wide receiver uh 4 for 42 if puka nula was a you know in this game late this is a different outcome I think I don't think that we would have been able to shut him down the Lions had had a had a big test tonight and they squeaked it out and this is going to be one that's going to add some metal to their jacket they're going to be able to build off of this one and uh and get stronger this week hopefully because Tampa Bay is sure as hell look good today uh it's going to be a tough game against uh against Tampa Bay in week two so defensive player of the game tonight Alex anzalone uh I don't believe that but on on tape it's probably going to tell me something different but on the stats he's the defensive player of the game with 13 total tackles Carlton Davis 10 tackles that's a problem right that means that your DBS are having to do all the work and that's because they were passing the ball a lot uh tyon Arnold third leading tackler with eight one thing about tyon Arnold that I noticed tonight this dude is a peer tackler he is a wrap tackler he wraps his arms around you and uh he does not let go peer tackler he's going to be a very exciting cornerback to watch uh Brian Branch man missed a huge interception tonight uh AG let him know about it um I'm sure Brian Branch feels a awful about it but Stafford should have had four interceptions ton that easily Kirby Joseph got a big pick tonight obviously showed Stafford that uh you can keep those dirty remarks to yourself keep throwing the ball my way and I'll just take it away Aiden Hudson only had five tackles tonight three solo one sack one tfl four quarterback hits so the stats when you look at the stats Hutchinson looked like he had a great game but again if you only only only look at the stats it paints a very different picture than what the tape is going to tell you which is how many times there was a Miss tackle how many times there was broken containment that allowed a run to go from two yards to 20 or a catch to go from three yards to 30 and and we're going to we're going to go over that Tuesday night I don't you guys know I don't just talk out of the side side of my mouth I'm going to reserve judgment full judgment or evaluation until until we go through the tape which this year we're doing that by purpose because I want to make sure that we we bring facts into this not just uh opinions so that's really it for tonight uh we'll be back at it it's already quarter after 1:00 in the morning uh I know I didn't really get involved with uh a lot of the chat tonight but we will tomorrow morning we'll be right back here at 8: a.m. with the rise and grind Morning Show hopefully I'll have a voice uh and we'll stay on as long as we can but we got
