Steve Sarkisian & Texas Longhorns football roster, Is QB1 2022 on current team? Monday Overreaction

yo what's checking everybody welcome back to another edition of the orange bloods texas football channel i'm jeff ketchum that is anwar richardson it is a monday overreaction show which means shout where's the overreaction show so damn it let's do what we do although last week we put the monday reaction show out on tuesday and the numbers were the highest that they've been on basically any monday that we've we've done so now ari wants to release the videos on tuesday from i think that was that was organic that it happened that way i just don't think you could do that every you can't release the monday over reaction shows on tuesday this is just the tuesday overreaction yeah yeah and there was like everyone's good people people will give you the one pass but everyone's not going to like fall for the banana in the tailpipe and like juke the stats and be like well we released some like no let's just do what we do people will follow but i'm not i'm not in favor of uh trying to you know hustle them in some way i'm not going to do that i don't want to be part of the page two quick things um first of all uh and we'll get to the press conference in just a second this is the last press conference on a monday in a while i mean we'll have signing day coming up in about a month but we're this will be the last time that for a while that we react to steve sarkesian on a monday which that by itself will probably allow us to get monday overreaction shows out a little bit earlier than normal yes i would say we won't be waiting for the press conference to necessarily record uh balcony we don't know how it works we're just like and that's kind of yeah that's where we're at so yes we don't understand how all this thing works we just know it works somehow we wouldn't ask if we didn't think for some reason it helped even a little bit okay anwar this was a really interesting press conference again sarkeesian showed up close to being on time today like i think that after two straight 12 10 starts or 11 10 starts excuse me he was almost right on time at the top of the hour he took a lot of questions he provided a lot of answers to a lot of different things that we could talk about uh in today's show your biggest monday overreaction from this press conference the last of the year leading into friday's kansas state game is what who i mean you know first of all there were so many good things that are that were there and not all of them i would necessarily consider be a negative i think i'll start with it with the easiest one which is he didn't sound like a guy 100 confident that he was going to be able to keep hudson card and casey thompson he's gonna come back yes like there'll be an effort made but he also was acknowledging with the transfer portal there's two things that happened he acknowledged that with the transfer portal it's a little bit more difficult but then the other portion that he kind of doubled down in an interesting way catch is that he also was like damn you know we're going to open this this stuff up kind of in the spring and you know whether it's a freshman that's coming in transfer quarterback like we just got to get better in that position and if you're one of these guys these quarterbacks who are like i don't know what i want to do and your coach is like yeah i mean we'd love to keep them back but we got to get better and da da da da i was like oh okay but hooker crook right now he's he's like we got to get better this position and he didn't seem sold or married to either one maybe he'll just let it play out and then whoever is the guy that's left standing that'll be his guy but he didn't he resisted the whole like it's just these two and nothing else he's like is these two could be a freshman could be someone who transfers in i don't know i'm open for business on war a few thoughts first of all you asked him the question like hey what do you say to hudson card and casey thompson and his response to you is like he did not make a case for either guy returning i mean he didn't say i'm gonna talk to hudson and say dude you're young come back like he didn't give us the speech he didn't give us the mini version of what he's gonna he spent zero time dedicated towards the talk of either of those two coming back he offered zero judgment on calling the portal ncaa free agency i mean he said it but he didn't say it in a way that made you think one way or the other he thought it was bad or negative like i didn't even get sense that he thought it was negative that he might lose two quarterbacks because he was quite honest about hey you know we're probably he isn't standing pat at quarterback he can't stay pat at quarterback we talked about this last monday when one of my big overreactions was casey thompson's out of here period like the moment that he said casey thompson was a microcosm of the entire team which neither one of us thinks that's fair and but he said it and it was like oh god what if his dad hurt you know what i mean like charles thompson heard that the next day casey shows up at the press conference like turning into his own hype man reminding people of his snacks and what he's done and it's not an accident that that happens one day after his coach was given an opportunity i don't know to fight i don't know i don't to do whatever say whatever and his comments were what they were today sarcasian is telling these guys to get in the portal and one of my other big overreactions from a week ago was i think sarkeesian may have an idea of who his guy is one way or the other in this portal whether that's the quinn ewers rumor that won't go away or whether or not they just have an idea of some guys that they've recruited that might be you know i mean these these portal things are usually the riddle is solved of where they're going to go yeah usually before their names are even in the portal there are obviously tons of examples where that isn't the case but it felt like every guy that transferred from texas a year ago ended up at either usc or utah the next day yes it was like oh i'm i'm putting my name into the portal and then like three hours later they've got media created that has them in new uniforms and it's like oh so maybe maybe these dudes do talk behind the scenes to kids and coaches and it's all really dirty dirty sausage making behind the scenes that nobody really wants to know yeah and i think today he he just hit the point home the starting quarterback for the university of texas in september of next year is not on campus because i would be stunned at this point if either quarterback returned to texas a year from now he doesn't seem as interested in those two guys returning as he is freshing it up a little bit so you know i think those dudes have ears i know their parents will and i know anybody who's represented them as a lawyer with aspirations of being an agent in this weird little nio world where you can represent a guy off the field but not on the field i know they're hearing this so i thought today was a major moment in this season because saturday whatever we watch at the quarterback position doesn't matter quite frankly saturday against west virginia didn't matter steve sarkeesian's done with both of these dudes yes i think he's done with both really see i think he's gonna try to take two dudes in this 2020 recruiting class malik murphy would be one clearly but if they can get devin brown or another guy to be the second guy go get somebody in the portal they'll have their depth it'll be young it'll be completely inexperienced i don't think steve sarkesian wants to ever have to play one of these dudes ever ever again i think he's done with both of them i think both of the last two weeks he's had an opportunity to talk to both of them through the media he's had an opportunity to endorse their talent i mean how hard is it to say look man casey's had some struggles but he's still third in the big 12 and passing efficiency or first in touchdowns and you know if if it was hudson card he can still talk about the talent and there's a reason we thought we made him the starter and like all we've got to do is develop and he's a young guy like there are things that he could say and instead he was like oh no i know there's a portal i know it's ncaa free agency and like yeah we'll probably be in it i don't know that that go ahead i don't know because part of me thinks that sarcasm has to play this down the middle as much as he can for all three aspects whether it's whether it's thompson whether it's hudson or whether it's for somebody who's out there that he wants now i think when he gets his guy he'll go all chips in but i i don't know i i don't know if he's totally done with either guy i think he does oh yeah i would just take the different opinion on that first of all if he's done with either one then who you bringing in that's probably a non-starter or grad transfer that you know for sure is going to be better he knows the answer to that question and we don't and i see and i lizzie well look i can't say yes certifiably because steve sarkeesian has been such a failure this year on the job i mean let's keep it a buck they're four and seven i mean it's okay to say the obvious at this point that could he get it wrong well yes yes i don't know whether he just he's got some back channel communications or indicators or you know i don't know what it is but my vibe for each of the last two press conference has been he knows who the who he my vibe is he knows now it's scary to think that he's acting that way and doesn't know right he's talking potentially as if he does you're suggesting i don't know that it's so crystal clear that that that's in that that's in the bag and that's cool like you and i have different interpretations of what it is that he's been saying and we disagreed on this a week ago i mean this is essentially a continuation of our disagreement from last week i get where you're coming from and we and has anything changed from your vantage point a week ago you thought if one guy was going to stay that he would be favoring hudson card right okay and i was like man i don't think he'll ever want to play hudson card again whereas i can at least look at casey and say i just don't think sark's put a lot of stock into this thumb thing at all like casey can talk about i haven't been well but sark isn't acting or talking like a guy who who cares about the thumb so my thing about card look the guy's in business school he is young and he is from austin so you could make a case in a rational world where it would make sense for him to come back even if he looks at sarkeesian and maybe sarkeesian's like i can't ever trust playing him again like it almost had to be accidental hudson card's next big chance for me has to be unplanned he shows up and it's like oh there he is that's the guy that we thought they were gonna be but it's hard for me to believe that sark could ever trust investing in him for all the reasons that we talked about a week ago tyrone swoops in 2015 and how people will kill people here's the thing and sark i think knows this he comes out and rolls out hudson card next year as the starter because hudson's been the best in practice he knows they'll kill him if he does that he won't have to have anybody tell him that i think with charlie you go back to the summer of 2015 and there was a while when it looked like tyrone swoops was going to be the starter and i think the head coach believed that and everybody was like he's not really going to do this is he and i think there's a little bit of that from a political standpoint of playing card but maybe you're right look maybe you're right i mean hudson didn't play that bad and it's so it's so it's this is the the most interesting qb conversation that you and i have had because we've swapped roles yeah because now we're swapping and i'm like oh well i can see why he would want to go with hudson next year and sona because you know you can still excuse some of these performances by saying young of course he's jittery because he's getting hit by this offensive line like no quarterback loves getting hit and so he's getting hit and but i thought when he came in in the second half he ignited the offense i mean there was a there was a definite difference in and he didn't look like the guy that i had criticized after the arkansas game where i was like oh my god like you this you know and hell that to be fair the guy that sarkeesian said i don't think he's ready so look and it's funny with just a little bit of swagger right it's it's funny what a spray of confidence cologne on a guy does to his performance because on saturday card looked like a guy that just needed one play to go right and he threw that dime to xavier worthy for the touchdown and it was like oh and suddenly even on the sidelines suddenly the guy had a bit of a bounce in his step and didn't seem meek or mild all it took was one great throw and that guy suddenly looked like an alpha it's funny how confidence can work in a weird way and it's also incredibly ironic that the moment that he gets a little bit of confidence some dude rolls up on his ankle five seconds after the whistle yeah and he may be out for this week i would guess it seems like there's some whispers about high ankle sprain and you know i don't i don't know about his availability sark did not talk up hudson card's return for saturday but what happened but the other flip side of what happens in that game is when hudson goes out he plays later casey throws the interception that ends up being the backbreaker because they were right there in scoring position and it becomes this thing where you're looking at both you're like man that just happened and so i could easily see stark saying you know what going forward i'm i'm going to go ahead and give this guy an opportunity if i'm casey and look am i the older guy i need some insurances i i i need i need to be in a place where i know for the most part i'm the dude why don't i want to come back and battle then my coach is saying no matter what no matter what i've done you still need more from this position like no matter what i've done or accomplished you still say i need more because there's the thing about the thing about casey is i don't have it at this moment you know there's there's there's a good and bad like in and again as a casey guy right so let me do that the thing about casey is that he was leading the conference let me look at it real quick i know i could find it he was leading a conference in touchdowns throne and let me see if he's still he still is okay 23 touchdowns thrown the second guy is jerry bohannon at 17. the flip side of that catch is that casey has also thrown eight touch eight interceptions so he's his interception percentage i believe is either worst or second worst in the conference it's not grossly like distortedly above he's way more ahead in touchdowns as a leader than he is in interceptions like we're talking death i want to say he's a 2.8 percent or something like that and the median slash kind of average in the conference among the leaders is 2.5 the 2.2 so you know like if we were just having a conversation i was like yeah his interception percentage is 2.8 and another guy's 2.5 we wouldn't think i don't think a lot of it because the margins seem pretty slim but um he's pretty clearly towards the top in interception percentage and you know we knew look i thought hudson would be a guy that threw seven or eight interceptions this year i thought that's it's part of growing up uh you know it's less than one per game but you know that's that's part of growing up and a lot of casey's bad throws haven't been competing throws so he's three he's trusting his arm too much and making a throw into traffic that isn't an experience throw a lot of the throws that he's made this year that he's paid the price on have been i think the throws that cost him the job in the summer which was a little too little more than hudson and that i think has even been the case in games this year i mean hudson at his worst hasn't been a guy that's thrown the ball to the other team a lot and casey's just had too many throws where you're like what was he what was he seeing what did he not see i mean there have been a couple of just oh no moments with casey and saturday's throw was one of them i mean it was it was just it was a back breaker i mean it was the game ceiling moment and like you said texas was threatening at that point i mean they weren't done in the water by any stretch of the imagination until that throw you know his completion percentage is at 62 catch and that's eighth in the conference right now uh spencer spencer is at you know 74.9 brock is at ironically 73.4 uh and he's that casey's at 62 um percent so which is still better than sam from a year ago if i'm not mistaking him yeah i can look i can look i think sam was at 59 if i'm not mistaken but i mean that's me within 10 seconds with a memory but yeah sam was at 60.2 okay i was just off still better than sam's from a year ago yeah i think that you know i i saturday was the worst at casey casey you know where casey is i think um a bit symbolic and a microcosm of this team with all due respect to the kansas game where he statistically was historically good after baylor he's you know he's played his worst football so iowa state was a disaster uh obviously this past weekend against west virginia was probably even his big you know he's played a level in every game but kansas for the last four it seems like where he's he's you needed you you starks had to like pull the hook or sark needed to pull the hook so he's just regressed in a way that i think stark's lasting memory of him will be more of the uneven downside than thompson at his absolute best which is unfair because you know casey thompson is a guy that had a historically good game against oklahoma for instance and something like that should matter because that's a game that really matters against a team that's really good it's not it's not what we thought about thompson early in the season when it was like texas tech and rice felt like such a fool's gold of sample size to judge the guy through because those teams don't matter and don't count as evidenced by the fact that they're the last wins except for tcu that texas has had so i don't know let's move on from quarterback for a little okay let's do it because there's a lot of other things that happened in the in in today's press conference um i think that the continued discussion of how he builds this team next year remains the a real interesting thing and it doesn't sound like he in the other question that you asked about when do you start talking to seniors and keeping these guys around he didn't make it sound like it was the most important thing on his list of things to do which i thought was a little interesting it just continues to paint the picture for me that this dude is done with this roster and he wants he's convinced himself that he needs his guys first and foremost and i was also really not taken aback but i thought his defiant i'm built for this was an interesting declaration of sorts and along with the commentary of if in year four we're losing four games i'll be worried now they've lost seven so i thought it was a little disingenuous to kind of somehow paint what he's doing this year as equal to losing four in year four but it i think paints and i thought alex noticed it in his review of the press conference on orange bloods that it paints a a picture of expectations not that we have to be told if he's losing four games in year four he's in trouble but to hear him say that was somewhat interesting uh and to also not hear him talk about year two or year three so we know what year one is and we know that in year four if he's not better than four wins or four losses that he would be worried there's an empty space there that i thought his not answering was pretty interesting because you know it's a probably a pretty relevant question to say okay if that was what worries you in year four can you outline two and three fourths as well um i i just thought he said all kinds of interesting little things today the quarterback thing is obviously these i mean clearly we talked for 25 minutes about it but um but let me address what you said in year what he's talking about year four though before he slips go yeah the thing is i understand he said he's not worried he should be yeah you know you you should be absolutely worried because the the thing that's happened in year one you you've used your get out of jail free card like you've used that in year one where people will excuse you and say all right this happened now but you won't get to year four if you have more seasons like this and you're probably not gonna get to year four unless there's some sort of noticeable difference in this team like that year four sounds great this is texas like that that contract someone will write that check and and and be done with it start off you can start start off one in three next year you there's no no one's going to want to hear about anything else after that you see you lose to utsa in alabama like to me he should be concerned because catch these kind of things aren't going to happen overnight you and i had did our post game on saturday you said right now what how many wins would i give this t and we were at like what six because you don't see a a four to ten jump like that that just doesn't really happen so you should be he should be concerned that this thing didn't go because at least if he starts at a seven ish you can work your way up from that and i know some people will point to aranda and say okay well he won two in year one and look what baylor's doing now there were some things working like legit things working against duranda random was taking over during a coveted year amanda was taking over when he had to do all things through zoom he didn't really get a chance to know these guys he didn't have a real a spring with them a summer with them like you ex you can excuse some of those things from year one this is a little bit different and this is a a winning team that may end up with seven straight losses and then you you to think like i'm not worried about that i i don't know i think you should you don't have to be worried to the point of man i can't move i can't gain any you know i'm losing sleep and what's that what's that cbd product that ketchum amar is always talking about because we need to i need to get some of that rogue in me because i got i've got so much i got so much built up so it's not like that but bro i almost think that saying like i ain't worried that i'll be worried in year four oh okay dude but i see i think that's a i think that's his recruiting spill yeah that's what he had he has to project confidence to recruits and it's why this this whole press conference was him doing a recruiting pitch you know these are the questions that presumably parents are going to ask him and it's why his indifference to talking about the quarterbacks stood out to me because this is the vibe that he's giving recruits and i get it um look i i don't know whether he's sarkeesian's given the vibe that he can't say enough how much he trusts his coaching staff and that their resumes speak for themselves and they didn't just become terrible coaches right away so i think he i think he believes in his own ability i think he believes in this coaching ability but i think that i i think that's dangerous like as you're kind of talking now like i think that charlie thought that tom thought that and one of the things you and i had a lot of back channel phone conversations where one of the things that we thought both charlie and tom needed was somebody who could keep it real with him and say hey champ i don't mean to break your confidence but reality check this is the this is the way the world actually exists i don't know if sark has that guy i think it's i think for recruiting purposes it's good that he's projecting so much confidence because that's what recruits are going to want to see but there's an actual strategy component as to what are you actually going to do to get better and it's going to take more than talking points in front of a microphone to pull that off there's an actual strategy was asked at one point in the press conference today what do you what positions on the team do you think are good so when i think it was brian davis it was like okay so when you're working to improve the program next year are there any positions going into next season that you're like we're good there and he's like running back and look joe cook asked the question by the way okay joe cook yeah and uh apologies to joker uh it sounded like the kind of thing that brian would ask um and sarkeesian is like running back it was interesting because i kind of wrote my column today was about this it was about where and where's the talent for next year like if you created tears what's your all-america tier what's your above average tier i came up with six above average players on war that are projected to return four running backs and two receivers who so you talking xavier and jordan yep those are two and then obviously the four guys they're four running backs and there's not there's not another single player that i'm i've at this point would that's scheduled to return i'm not saying on the entire team right i'm not saying that cameron dicker demarvion overshone wouldn't belong in that category in a world where they're definitely coming back but you know that remains to be seen about any of these guys and again i thought it was interesting you know sark could have said today hey i'm definitely sitting down with demarvion because we think he's really you know he could have given they could have given to marvion this speech and i found it really interesting there wasn't a single guy not a senior and not either of these quarterbacks that sark took the time to say we're gonna sit down with anthony cook and tell him that we thought he had a good year we think his nfl stock can get better we we need him and he needs us and we want to convey that you asked him hey do you want to get on the stump and and and give us the speech for the seniors and he was like ah dude when the season's over and you know i'm not going to do it before like it just he had a chance to do it and he's not doing it that that is interesting to me mainly because i think the quintessential coaching thing to do is to use these press conference moments for exactly the things that i'm talking about it's to give to marvian over shone a little speech so that it's in the public kind of consciousness if you will and that you're sending messages that you know he's going to hear he didn't do that today and i guess the one thing i would say for him is if you got a four-win team you know you're like hey for real at that point i mean who are you really married to you know at that point i'm not even judging him i'm just saying like i'm not saying it's a bad thing yeah i'm just saying i found it to be notable but look sarc showed up a week sark was the most excited that we've seen him a week ago when he was like 33 baby 33 new players that's what i'm talking about that seems to be where his head is and i'm not judging him for that i'm just i'm acknowledging in front of the room like okay because i part of my column today was god you'd like to have look at the defense for next year you're returning almost all your defensive tackles you're returning ovie brockermeyer and like jaren thompson i mean i know this locker room but look by the same token every dude that you could whether it's desean jameson or anthony cook or whomever they all have their fingerprints on this four and seven four and eight stink bomb two so i get it but boy you'd like to have some guys coming back this this is going to be a defense where potentially you're talking about eight or nine new starters yeah yeah which you know again if you think if you think this season was bad i mean it's you know what you think about down the line for okay if you put in all these new guys because it's it sounds great right you know recruiting your signing day right the victory laps are going to happen right oh you know everyone's going to go around in the victory laps and even from a recruiting standpoint everyone's going to be excited about that but you still got to have find the guys who come in and still can can contribute like you remember you remember catch what year was it when charlie signed all those defensive linemen it was like five defenses 2016. and everyone was hyped right oh my gosh look at all these defensive linemen that he had signed i tried to tell people though i was the one real dissenter in that i was like uh and i don't think any of them panned out unless puna was a part of that i think when it was 15. wasn't it so the pretty much none of them panned out but you know so no matter what when you do the victory lap on signing day of hey all these guys are there the numbers and odds show that the majority of those guys are probably not going to pan out they're just do not so you didn't say you're going to put in all these new guys into your point maybe not have guys that are returning developed you're just going to throw a bunch of new guys there that's not 100 the formula for success like what that what that leads to and more than likely is still a lot of growing pains still a lot of things to figure out and then it's going to be well you know you know we've got a bunch of young players right then we got a bunch of young guys i mean it's almost like the card no it's because it's becoming catch it's becoming like a game of longhorn bingo and you get your bingo card and then you just figure out like when there's an excuse and then you put it down right so it's like hey there's a new coach oh that's b4 yeah oh yeah this there's a new assistant coaches oh that's i you know 65. i like a good bingo card metaphor well done onwards my favorite moment of the show so far there's some bingo cards here and you just keep going to all the different things until you until you finally fill out your card of all your little longhorn excuses and it's like bingo hey real quick i'm looking at the clock it feels like right like a five minute warning um one thing that stood out to me amongst uh all of the news and little note stuff and i'm nobody really specifically asked about this in the press conference but in the note sheet today uh delia dayaway ryan buschevsky keiondre kobe and rafiti grammai and alvante woodard and chi money for that matter that's six guys list juniors listed as guys that are going to participate as as seniors on sunday senior day okay that stood out to me like look now de marvin overshown wasn't listed and then we since found out that demarvion plans on being in senior day so maybe we should consider that very unofficial but that is potentially a half dozen names that would be off of the 85 man roster and when you talk about like how does texas get to 33 a a one fell swoop six name wipe away from the scholarship board would be quite impactful uh i actually sent bianco john bianco the texas sid office um i sent him a note saying hey out of curiosity is that what this means i haven't heard back from him yet but that's a big chunk of players that other than coburn none of those guys have contributed at all this year and if you were gonna lose some guys for numbers they would fit the profile of guys that you'd want to lose older guys who aren't making impacts something to keep an eye on any any other quick hitters you want to hit on i'll give you yeah i thought i thought when he talked about you with the to the joe cook thing he's you know pass rush he i think no it was the opposite of it but he talked about how the things he wanted to improve pass rush depth on the offensive line and getting healthy i thought the second one depth of the offensive line i'm like now you want starters you're not i don't i don't think you're looking for backups at this moment i do believe that that but i think he's that clearly has understood and he even talked about a catch like that you've got to be able to generate a pass rush and it's kind of like realizing that they just did not generate a pass rush especially up front and how they have to get better in that so the good thing i think i thought about today catch was that i think he clearly defined and clearly articulated where he thought the strengths and weaknesses of this team is and we know what to look for in the off season we know okay when he brings in this guy he's a he's identifying that he when he brings in this guy's identifying this is for his strength or to bolster something but if he signs a receiver we may be like well you didn't talk about that before so what we'll see but i think us knowing exactly where he is from a roster standpoint i thought was really uh beneficial and and i and you know and i enjoyed that transparency that he gave us i can't even begin to imagine how we're going to react because every guy they add in the portal is going to feel important right i mean it's last year it's like oh they added this guy in the portal and he can help the thought was this was a good team i was like oh pretty good player to come add some depth this year every guy's gonna feel like oh that that's thick that guy's supposed to be the answer oh well we didn't have a pass rush this year and so a defensive like a guy comes in as a pass rusher and it's gonna be oh the importance of that guy in 2022 when we judge what happens in 2022 you know if ovo gofu is this year's guy we'll look at ovo gofu next year and we'll be ju we'll look at him as like he's either the answer or this didn't work it's a lot of the what what happens from a roster building standpoint it'll be most i'm not even trying to hype this up for like subscribers or views or anything it's so different to anything that we've ever interesting than the games yeah and it's a total role reversal from a year ago or any year that we've ever known absolutely well listen i think you know the last thing i'll say is for our subscribers i think catch just kind of gave you a teaser to some of the content that we're going to have coming forward which is you know what we're done you know we understand look there's a game on friday and we understand that that game has to be played but catch and i have both of written on orange bloods we're looking forward to 2022. that's where our focus is on there's not much left to discuss here there's no meat left on the bone of this 2021 season for us it's going to be about recruiting it's going to be about the transfer portal uh it's going to be about if there are any changes that are going to be made on the staff i think you guys will enjoy the videos because they will be looking forward to the future going forward so say anyone is like oh you guys are a little bit negative well hey it's hard to find a lot of positives during the six game losing streak in the loss of kansas but looking to the future i think we'll have a lot more uplifting conversation to have so i thought
