BREAKING: 2025 S Jonah Williams COMMITS to Texas! | Recruiting | Longhorns Football

boom and it's a big one Jonah Williams out of Galveston ball Jerry has announced for the Longhorns Big Time pickup for Texas uh one of the state's best and country's best players uh one of the states and country's best safeties overall the 5A Defensive Player of the Year in District 995a uh had 58 tackles a year ago four tackles for loss four interceptions three of which he took back for touchdowns then he had also returned three punts for T excuse me two punts and two kickoffs for Touchdown this is a playmaker Deluxe added to the Longhorns class clearly one of the top players in this recruiting class if not the very top player in the recruiting class for the Longhorns at this juncture yeah it definitely is I mean he is a guy that there aren't many guys you legitimately could say he could play safety or he could play wide receiver he lit he literally can do that you could almost call him an athlete um he is that time ented of a player obviously a talented baseball player what is an outfielder that's really talented do he can turn and run and track of football and you see that in playing offense at receiver you see that playing the ball at safety you see that in the return game those guys know how to play a ball in the air with timing um and accelerate after the catch um and Jonah Williams is look he's 63 205 when I was there when I was at the school first day of practice in August uh the coach coaching staff commented he had lost 10 pounds he was up to 215 late in the school year he dropped 10 PBS 63 205 PBS explosive athlete got really good hands got really good ball skills and then you see there I mean he has legit speed he has he has athletic speed and he has football speed uh but that long stride 63 205 he eats up ground he eats up that sport Turf quickly one of the best players in the country and look at a need position for the Texas Longhorns in this clight oh huge huge position of Need for Texas especially after losing Cade Phillips to LSU a week ago Jerry you look at him uh and you see potential H five-star guy here uh from Galviston ball what what you know you think about it what does this mean in the grand scheme because he's a top five player overall in the state of state of Texas is this one of those big ones for Texas that that uh just Ultra Ultra important for their recruiting class yeah I definitely think it is and maybe not as much as the from the national uh reaction and all the things that come with this but for the program positionally at the safety position a big athlete uh that's one of the best in the country look Bobby a guy that plays the ball in the air if there's one thing that what sort talked about what's PK talked about creating more turnovers this is a guy that creates turnovers and he's got SEC size and that is a key right there is he is not an undersized safety he is 63 205 pounds with ball skills and and I'll tell you the key for me with him is when he decided he was going to graduate early uh on Texas football broke that news the first day of practice what he effectively was saying was I prefer football over baseball and that changes his calculus because Texas now picks up a commitment from one of the top athletes in the country that had a decision to make between football and baseball and made a football decision um so you take you see the video we talk about all the skill set you went over it Bobby 20 catches 474 yards at wide out two eight touchdowns two rushes 144 yards both of those were touchdowns you mentioned 231 kick return yards 155 punt return yards he had 1176 allpurpose yards to go with 58 tackles four tackles flost four ints two fumble recoveries uh so this is a guy that plays until he cramps plays good competition um down in the Galveston County area the the Texas cities their District may not be tough but he plays tough competition now this year's District much more difficult for galeston ball but there you just see he can turn and run but the big thing for me Bobby is he makes plays on the football I I I love it you just watching play we'll have rod bavers in a little bit Tell You Folks about how he breaks down the footage Rod of course a former all Southwest Conference or excuse me all Big 12 Corner uh for the Longhorns uh he'll uh tell you what he thinks of Jonah Williams here in a little bit Jerry you were down actually at Galveston County earlier this week speaking to the Texas X's down there you did a little Recon while you down there you've been to ball high a couple of different times to speak uh with Jonah Williams and his family as well uh who did this come down to who did they beat out for and how did they do it yeah I think it really came down to Texas in in LSU and I think Texas A&M was third and look I know there were pics in our industry all over the place all the multiple schools four schools but the reality was he wasn't going to go far from home nobody in his family including his father went out of state for college or went far from home for college so there's a pattern there in the family and here's another piece to it why the close to home was always going to matter his older brother Seth is a uh community college junior college baseball player in Texas will be going off to a four-year School some probably somewhere in the state to play four-year baseball that's a lot of travel for a family so staying close to home was became very important there because it's one thing if you have one kid that's a college football and baseball player it's another thing if you have a second son that's a college baseball player as well it's only so much time uh in in one's day in one's weekends to go support their children uh but what I think happened with Texas was look Jonah really liked Texas early on but when Jeff choke was at Texas Texas recruiting him as a linebacker at the time Jonah Williams was as interested in playing wide receiver as he was safety so after Jeff choke took the Nevada Job even though Blake Gideon was the area school recruiter Texas shifted gear said all right you know watching you as a junior you we think you can play safety and so Texas started recruiting him as a safety without that move right there we aren't even talking about Jonah Williams committing the Texas so that was a big move um and then I think Blake Gideon did a really good job developing that relationship I think Texas season on the field field was big from a football standpoint 11 guys drafted a team that won national awards a team that was in the college football playoff they have identifiable football players again for some prospects and then you have the baseball component Jim schloegel leaving A&M to go to Texas I think was a big thing for the Longhorns in their quest in both Sports and and I'll say this Texas winning out here while they had the closer to home inate closer to home in their favor you know coach Baker at LSU is from the Houston area it was tight is tight with some people close to Jonah um he used to coach at clar Springs High School before he got into college football he did a very good job in this recruitment for LSU and you know he sold the defense he sold Cory Raymond he sold Kate Phillips and DJ picket as being cornerbacks at LSU and how he could come in and be the key piece at safety so LSU did their job it wasn't easy uh but I think the combination of football baseball Texas and Texas success on the football field combined with Schlagel uh leaving A&M and coming to Texas to be the baseball coach put the Longhorns over the top and I want to throw one thing out else out there his brother Nick Williams who is a really obviously talented baseball player that was once committed to Texas ended up signing with A&M but was directed draft in the sandwich selection and went to the MLB draft he now lives in Austin so there's another piece to that now maybe not full-time but he is an Austin I think his wife uh or girlfriend a fiance is in Austin so I think there was a little bit close to home there in Texas favor too late yeah F Family Matters uh there's no doubt about that as we look forward uh but this is a huge commitment I think you look at it Jerry and if not the top player in the class certainly one of the top ones Longhorns now uh sitting there looking at a top 10 potential class with this and possibly some other guys still in the offing Michael Terry still out there Madden foro as well as a few others J Jamie French is August 30th that's next Friday a week from uh six days away uh just one day away from the Colorado State opener so there's a lot of possibilities still out there for the Longhorns that can continue to Edge them up in the team recruiting rankings you know who's really happy about this commitment Casey Hampton Casey Hampton former Galveston ball star lives in lives in Galveston these days um attend some galison ball events I know he's really happy about this because I believe Bobby Casey was the last guy Alon ball football player uh to commit sign and play at Texas yeah that's a good one to follow if you're going to follow in anybody's footsteps and those are large footsteps with J hampt all right let's give way to Rod bavers our our Rod bavers here at on Texas football breaks down Jonah Williams and his pledge to the University of Texas Jerry I've got one last thing and this is the Jonah Jonah Williams hook him Bud hey what's up folks lifetime Longhorn Rod bers here welcome back to on Texas football I'm here to give you my personal evaluation of the safety out of galston ball Jonah Williams now he's a two sport athlete there's some people that believe he may not even end up playing college football even if if he ends up getting drafted high enough in the Major League Baseball draft but let's for a second let's assume and pretend that he's gonna end up playing college football I'll give you my personal evaluation first of all it's hard for me to believe that there are more safeties there there are two or three better safeties in this young man in the country I mean I think he's that good I think he's that impressive uh number one he's a ball Hawk would I love about you know I always got to put my back seven Defenders into different categories Ball Hawk is he a disruptor a technician this young man is a ball Hawk uh tremendous ball skills and he's a problem once he gets the ball in his hands actually he can be a problem as you can see right there right he's got his he's got a nose for the end zone and can really turn into an offensive player and you see that right he's a playmaker with the ball you'll see that he has some pun return and some kickoff return duties uh and you can see that but young man's got a nose for the End Zone once he gets the ball in his hands look how Glides I mean guys got great uh speed we'll get into that a little bit later on uh but impressive ball tracking ability as a safety this is a young man I truly believe can be a sideline to sideline safety he's also great at feeling the alley there you go I call him the Alley Cat you know I love my Alley Cats a guy that can take precise angles downhill to the football and the reason that that is important is because these days when you want to play more two high safeties by the way the longh horns they play a lot of match quarters which is two high safeties deep where DBS are taking quarters of the field four DBS taking quarters of the field you want to be able to deter all right the Deep vertical routes with your alignment so two deep safety so the quarterback will see you deep and go well I'm not throwing that deep seam Rod or I'm not throwing that deep uh skinny post or that deep uh um you know that deep uh post route or you know that flag route I'm not throwing those deep vertical shots down field because the safety's already got to jump on me and then they may check to a run a lot of the times when they have those deep safeties and then then they check to a run well they have the numbers in the Box because your safeties are backed up very deep you want a safety that can def deter with alignment and still be able to get downhill 12 15 yards and still be able to make a play close to line of scrimmage by running the alley with precise angles this young man can do that uh really disciplined eyes I love that about him really disciplin that takes him you know your eye your feet go where your eyes go and his feet they end up in the right place because his eyes are very disciplined and then his ball skills take over and after that I mean trust me that's when his playmaking ability takes over as well he has great range I I I've talked about that sideline and sideline brings his hips with him you'll notice that when he makes a tackle uh that's also important for a safety brings his hips with him has a good base when he's trying to make a tackle in the open field and I also think he's a a really nice open field tackler uh as well and you know excellent uh in terms of his you know you go look at his hips that's one thing about defensive backs you want to look at their hips if they got loose hips quick hips this young man has them you can watch him when he's turning and running with offensive players I mean he does it with ease a very smooth transition for him um and that's one thing I I like too and something else you'll notice and he doesn't often end up in a situation where he has to use his makeup speed but you'll see him when he's tracking the football often feels like he's baiting quarterbacks at times he's got that kind of speed but he also has tremendous size right he's 6'3 200 pounds and you watch a move and he does not move like a look at that look at the hips look at the hips he doesn't move like a guy right who is 63 200 pounds tremendous makeup speed and very loose hips the truth is in this day and age where I think about I talk about position football versatility multiplicity their skill set he could end up being a guy that can play safety for you but also be a hybrid Defender that you can roll down to linebacker depth when you need him because he could easily put on 10 to 15 pounds and I think he would still keep his you know his speed I think he will still keep his lateral quickness and he's a guy that has the measurables that can that project to be a hybrid Defender and like I said that also has a lot of value in the modern game of football so that's uh my valuation on Jonah Williams like I said I don't know if they two safeties in the country that can be better than Jonah Williams from what I watched a tremendous Prospect and that's my personal evaluation of the safety from galison ball
