GET UP | "Criticism of Dabo Swinney is fair" - Desmond Howard reacts to Clemson's loss to Georgia

we're back on get up if you were just joining us again Florida State looked just awful last night getting blown out by Boston College 2813 in Tallahassee the seminal ran for 21 yards in this game and gave up over 260 yards rushing our own former Boston College Eagle Damen Woody no one loved it more [Laughter] we smash them boys down in Tyler hasset man smash them [Laughter] boys now that's a happy offensive lineman Jeff is laughing over here when one team runs for 263 yards and the other runs for 21 yards you don't have to guess who wound up winning the game the great Desmond Howard is up with us this morning along with with Paul and and you knowz the world is piling on Florida State and and that that's it's understandable we know we're going to do it I would ask you as an analyst to explain it like this is a team that would seem to have absolutely everything in the world to play for early in this season after the way they felt like they were robbed last year how do you explain them coming out 0 and two in games in which they were double digigit favorites in both yeah it's really difficult to explain because you thought that they had the talent to at least Beat Boston College in Georgia Tech right out the gate but I think that um both teams came out with excellent game plans in the Georgia Tech game I understood that they were going to struggle in the first half but the second half Florida State made no adjustments and in this game I just thought that Boston College and uh coach O'Brien you got give them a lot of credit they came out with a specific game plan they executed their game plan to Perfection which was keep away football in the first half I think in the first quarter they had the ball like almost 14 minutes so they were able to execute their game play but again in the second half you didn't see any great adjustments and then Florida State just played uninspired for this to be their second game of the season their home opener and they didn't have a lot of juice a lot of fire was very disappointing and so Paul for those just waking up and joining us um you know talk about a 12 team playoff do we stick a fork in Florida State as early as this yes you do uh and I I know a lot of people will say there there's a lot of football left to be played no no greeny the football has already been played the these are not even big games on Florida State schedule uh they have blown both of them they're in the ACC which means they need to win that League at this point to to get an automatic bid or or or even into the playoffs and they're they're not going to they have to deal with Miami they're not going to beat Miami I I don't really I'm not sure this team can beat anyone uh the way they played in the first two rounds so let's not uh let's not you act like this is not a big deal it is a big deal stick a fork in them they're done we'll see you we'll see you next year Florida State he they were both conference losses speaking of the conference let's stay there Desmond we didn't have a chance to talk with you yesterday one of the biggest stories of Saturday of course was Clemson getting blown out by Georgia 34-3 and after that game our Shannon sharp had very strong comments about Clemson's coach Davos Sweeney here's what he said he's going to have to have an epip which is a realization that if you don't pay those if you don't get transfer portal you ain't win got win Coach K said I don't do one and done no that ain't me right until he started doing one ands if you can't beat him join you ain't got no choice you ain't got no choice get with the program you ain't got no choice you're not that good you're not that good buddy you're not that good if you think you just gonna get high school seniors and you gonna and that's what you gonna win with bro that's over not gonna happen it is over and let me contextualize this for anyone who's not aware of what happened here there are only four schools in the country this year that did not take a single transfer Clemson and the three service acmy there are obvious reasons why no one is transferring to Army Navy and Air Force uh people would transfer to Clemson if Dy were willing to do that so you know Paul for those who were not with us yesterday you had some very strong comments and what what do we say about the this approach that DB oeni has chosen at Clemson it's a complete and total failure green and I don't know how you can find it any other way when you look up and down college football and that the top teams many of whom have quarterbacks who have transferred in in fact uh I I don't Georgia doesn't but but Texas uh does Oregon does so many other schools do and for Dabo just to completely you know say I'm going to do it my way that's fine but this is 2024 everything has changed and you're still being uh you're living in another world an anti-an philosophy and it's costing him and I'm not suggesting there's any the end is near for him but his fans the ones of which I've heard from already on our show greeny are frustrated and they don't know what to do because he's been so successful you can't go down the hallway and say get out of here the guy's been to four National Championship games and six playoffs he's taken Clemson where it has never been before but it's going nowhere right now no one is questioning what he has achieved and no one is questioning whether he's a good coach but the reality is he again has chosen Desmond a path you want to talk about the The Road Less Traveled he has chosen not to take advantage of a new rule in the sport that quite literally every team he competes with has so Dez I want to ask you as a college football analyst does he have any chance of winning in a major way without going into the portal as everyone else does greeny the reason why lot of coaches they dip into the portal nowadays is because they don't do a good job at developing the talent that they bring in you look at some of these um these programs like a Clemson you know and they have like high recruiting classes meaning Improvement my problem is it's okay if you don't want to go get a quarterback out of the portal I get that you may go get a piece here like a wide receiver or an offense caliber and we don't see the the progress the development then that's the problem that I have so he's adopted this philosophy that I have the Supreme confidence in myself and my coaching staff to develop the players that we recruit that's fine and dandy but when you going up against a team like a Georgia who's going to be the yard stick by which your team which your players are measured then at that point we can see just how well you've developed your talent and at that point at this point it seems like it's now on the level of a top tier program which is sad to see CU da is a top tier coach what what do you think Jeff the whole thing no I actually agree with that I mean I think what what his point is is the best made right is when you look at this is not your ability to coach this is your ability to develop the talent on your team so many teams now are going to get players that are already developed they've already produced Big Numbers at other places they're coming into programs and I think that's going to be the part that's most difficult for Dabo it's it's much it's much different to try to to develop an 18yearold and a 21y old and now guys play six years in the in college or more which is crazy so these guys have a lot of football experience and you're comparing them to young players with no experience it makes it much more difficult I will say though it's not I I watched that entire game they they were with Georgia early on now but Georgia is in a complete class by itself so I would say to just rubber stamp all is for not there in Clemson because of you lose to a lot of teams going to lose to Georgia this year greeny a lot of Team probably every team honestly so let's not just say all in comparison to Georgia let's not just jump on that train that's fine I I that's that all everything that's being said here is fine the only question I'm asking is if an NFL team and let's face it college football has become a professional sport if if if if an NFL team if an NFL general manager said we're not signing free agents we don't do that like we're going to draft players develop them and that's it and we believe in our system and we're not going to sign free agents he would last 4 seconds because everyone would say what are you talking about here's a rule that everyone else is taking advantage of and you're choosing not to that's what Davos Sweeny is doing and that's the part of it that I think is harder to stake okay I got one more thing I have to play this sound off and Paul I cannot wait to hear your reaction Florida head coach Billy Napier his team gets obliterated by Miami and then during his press conference yesterday he took a shot at his own fans listen I think we got to get more we got to become a more consistent team and we have to execute better and if we can focus on those things and not necessarily what some guy in his basement saying in you know rural Central Florida on social media then we got a chance to get better right oh no oh no no no don't do that Paul your [Laughter] reaction simply egregious greeny I mean here's a guy who who's really uh down to his last breath he's lost more games greeny in two seasons and one game in the swamp than Steve spur lost in 12 years and he is going after his own fan base th those those folks who go to Walmart and buy Gator jerseys and and and and beg and and plead for tickets to his games I mean that is one of the most inexcusable shots I have ever seen and one more thing here greeny I don't live in Florida but I was there over the weekend at that game they don't have basement in Florida it's too close to the water so Billy no your geography my friend that's true they don't have basement but the Desmond listen I don't know everything but I know this there's one hard fast rule in sports never go after your own fans those people were sitting in those seats before you got there and they're going to be sitting in them long after you leave and there is there is nothing that makes me more upset and I don't care what team it is it's obviously not my team nothing makes me more upset that when a coach or someone anyone goes after a team's fans those are the people people who should matter the most Desmond what's your reaction well first of all I'm very angry at Paul fine bomb because he stole my thunder I actually live in Florida and you're right we do not have basement so that was going to be my opening statement we don't even have basements okay I get it though I listen coach Napier came into this season under tremendous amount of pressure you know he was only picked I believe when less than five games they have the toughest schedule in all of college football and on top of that now you're playing playing your instate rival the Miami Hurricanes these two teams hate each other and then you your team goes out and they lay an egg the way that they did with all the the pressure and the tension that's been building for Coach napia so I understand the situation but you guys are 100% right you never can attack or go after your fan base that's that's never a good look for any Coach quick final word you lose 4117 bro less is more don't talk about any what anybody else is saying about the game just just let it ride hey we played bad we'll get better well put Desmond
