🚨 Giants Claim 1 Defensive Back In NFL Waiver Wire | New York Giants News

the New York Giants and Joe Shane were expected to be extremely aggressive in the NFL waiver wire and then the Carolina Panthers claim 74 Corners so the Giants weren't able to get the guys they want but they did claim a defensive back who I think is going to help this football team we've got an entire Scouting Report built around that player and five players have already returned to the Giants Marshall Green appreciate everybody for stopping by as we break down the weight claim safety Anthony Johnson who is now a member of the Giants who comes over from the Green Bay Packers there's a lot of talk about the Giants being active going after corners and maybe a quarterback maybe a punt returner but like we said the Panthers they claimed all the corners so the Giants do go out and add a safety and Anthony Johnson some quick hitting information here he was a seventh round pick out of Iowa state in the 2023 NFL draft he actually played a pretty good amount for Green Bay last year he started four games for him 12 total games played 302 defensive snaps with 57 special team snaps as well when you are a back end of the roster guy like him if you can really produce if you can help the team at all and special teams you are going to up the likelihood of making the team he's 6 foot 205 lbs 24 years old and last year for the Packers he had 24 tackles one interception off Brett rien of the Los Angeles Rams in three pass breakups he's known for a guy he's known as a guy excuse me that is really good in stopping the run and there were people on Packers Twitter that were hyping this guy up Zachary Jacobson who tweeted this back on August 25th said Anthony Johnson Jr's preseason four tackles two stops allowed two receptions for 18 yards and 57 coverage snaps one force fumble one fumble recovery and a touchdown another seventh round gem for Brian G the GM for the Packers um look they thought that they got another stud and now he's a member of the New York Giants and as we know the Giants kept three safeties well then four safeties but they're going to have to put someone to IR we'll talk about the safety depth chart in a second but some more info on Johnson he lined up 51 times last year in the Box 210 times as that free safety 38 snaps in the slot that was a number that stood out to me the Giants still need to go out and add a corner we'll talk about it and maybe if he could play in the slot that'll help him just three snaps as that boundary guy but he's going to operate mainly has a deep safety and a guy that can walk down in the Box as he is known as a hard hitter but the Pro Football Focus grades they don't tell me he's a great tackler they don't tell me he's someone that's going to be good in the run but I reached out to a couple of Packers friends and I asked them and they told me that he is a good run stopper so I'm going to take their word for it but you see the PFF grades on screen not great 52 in coverage that was for the 2023 Reg season these are his PFF grades for the 2023 and 2024 pre-season where he actually played a good bit for the Green Bay Packers um 86 total snaps in the preseason this past year 79 total snaps in 2023 much better grades and obviously the preseason is not the regular season but when we don't have a sample size large enough to really make a strong educated guess on type player is I'm going to pull all the information that I can he played pretty well in the preseason this year people were talking about him being a steal unfortunately the Packers are really loaded and that's good for the Giants and maybe he could be a stud for this team Dan Dugen of the athletic one of the best on the Giants beat give him a follow you're not going to regret it he tweets this out saying doing some research on Anthony safeties this year so that squeezed him out so you get an updated look at what this safety depth chart looks like and you might say well Marshall you told me yesterday that jarious Owens was cut well that's what we had hurt but it sounds like he may be heading to Iowa just quickly javarius Owens was the 54th player that was out on the practice field yesterday who was called into the building Midway through practice a lot of people thought he was going to be cut he was not it was Matthew Adams the inside linebacker who I told you was on the team he's heading to IR does have the ability to return though this season so right for now you have six safeties on the team pinck nuben Belton Owens Simmons and Johnson if I had to make a guess someone on this list is either going to be cut or head to ir and it could be javarus ens as he is dealing with a little bit of an injury once the Giants though make another move we will make another video my question to you though is this what is practice squad and that's good news for him and good news for this football team the Giants also go out and they sign Tai Summers to the the practice squad a guy that was on the Detroit Lions this off season so he's not someone that the Giants had on their team and they cut him he was cut by the Lions and now he is coming to play with the New York Giants he is someone that is known as a special teams specialist in his career 1,311 special team snaps which is 207 defensive snaps this guy right here that is your Matthew Adams replacement remember Adams is on IR can come back to to miss four games but Summers a guy that's played much more on special teams he's going to help you there and give you a little bit of depth at that inside linebacker spot Raheem Lane who was waved by the New York Giants yesterday he returns to the practice squad as well obviously the Giants people inside that building are big fans of him they also keep Jimmy morresy on the practice squad a center the Giants have two centers on the 53 man roster on John Michael schmidtz and Austin schlotman so if an injury happens to either of those players expect for morsy to be signed to the 53 and then Jude macademy I think I am saying that right the Irish kicker he returns to the Giants practice squad he actually does not take up one of the 16 spots on the practice squad that you are allowed since he was born in Ireland Irish born I think that's where connect the dots there I should know that as I am Irish and my last name is green but he is on the Giants practice squad and he does not take up one of the 16 spots on there so a lot more moves to be made on the practice squad and when they come in we will get you guys a video when all 16 spots are made we'll do an in-depth video on every single
