The Return of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Joe Musgrove's Absolute GEM

on today's show the San Diego Padres get their boy their Legend their lightning rod their heart foran tatis Jr returning for the Padre's last night as well as a Joe Musgrove gem talking about some power ranking updates and much more let's get into it you are locked on Padres your daily San Diego Padres podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team Every Day greetings ladies and gentlemen and welcome to another edition of locktop HS podcast which is part of the lock podcast Network your team every day for Tuesday September 3rd as always I'm your host with sometimes accounts and send me your questions because we're going on a rolling basis this week you know what I mean a rolling in missions that's what we're doing here for the Padre's podcast this week because of so many miss episodes last week I wanted to make it up to you guys and we're actually going to be reading a listener question today so go do that you're also might be familiar with my baseball related work over at just baseball great website WR about the Padres and other stuff so go check that out and I also host a podcast there called baseball versus the world about General baseball goodness folks I'm going to be honest with you you might tell you might be able to tell based on my voice that I'm having trouble I'm still a little a little bit sick um so I'm going to be talking as lightly as possible I I don't have the same energy level because then I start to cough a bit and I want to try and keep that you know a little bit of little bit down just for you guys but believe me the Padres are certainly not down we're recapping last night's game and we got to start with first and foremost the boy is back Fernando tatis junior is back in the lineup he hit second yesterday um firstly just got to talk about the fact that um we love FanDuel guys really quickly let me just tell you forgot to mention this now through September 22nd all FanDuel customers can bet $5 and get a 3-we free trial of NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV visit fel.com to get started sorry about that interjection there but tatis um look before he went on the i f tatis Jr was still really one of the best players on this team seriously now don't get me wrong tatis has been looking for a while we haven't seen like the Ultra MVP version but before he headed onto the uh the IL he had like a 132 133 WRC plus he was leading on the team with the exception of jerks and profar um and he's been amazing this year in fact in terms of WRC plus he's second on the team still even despite all the injuries and whatnot to jerks and profar who has a 140 compared to tatis Who currently has a 131 I think based off of yesterday he does not get any hits or anything like that but it was still really cool he talked about how electric it was to be back uh we love love that very much and that was just really cool it was just really cool to see him back and you know you're not going to have to worry about your Bryce Johnson's or anything like that and just adding that type of Difference Maker in this lineup that already has had so many good players but it's good to have your stars back especially in a postseason run we talk a lot about on the show how you know there's a lot of teams in baseball that have these little cutesy breakout unexpected Seasons from players because they develop well um but you're going to need stars in the postseason and that's really what the return of tatis junor means for this team right now at least in my opinion um in terms of rest of the regular season look the pyri offense has been great don't get me wrong like it's been really good and it has survived very well without him and I think that that's been a big theme um this year is every time an injury has happened um or a player has been playing injured let's say Manny Machado there are other guys on this team that have stepped up and in general this is the most in my opinion since I've been covering the show since 2019 I think this is easily the most the deepest um Padres team um or at least Padre's lineup uh that we've seen I I I think in general actually you know what I'm going to say team too because if you take into account the pitching and Bullpen and everything I just think that the depth on this team is is unbelievable um and you saw it um yesterday as well and you've seen it days before so Shati being back also big part about him that I really like too is he's been one of the better High leverage players in Major League Baseball and on this Padre's team absolutely love to see that so it's it's just cool that let's say you know some guys start to regress that you don't expect to be great in the high leverage um to the degree that they've been so like your jerks and Prof fars maybe even your Jackson Merrills to an extent well they just added F tatis Jr back so for everything that might regress right if we and again I'm getting out a little bit of tangent here but for everything that might regress based on what's been going well for the Padre's High leverage situations if they go back to normal and they're not able to make five run comebacks the same way that they've been doing for much of this year it's okay because guess what you have other things to supplant that and supplement it I should say um like the fact that the pitchy rotation is getting healthy like the fact that you have the great Bullpen so there's just so much about this team that is really exciting and adding tatis to it I mean come on man I mean come on like you can't get any better than that and I think that with him back on the team it is just so fun like even if he didn't like do anything yesterday which he did he goes 0 for four with a strikeout didn't really have any plays of the Outfield as well either um even if he you know did do anything it's just so cool to have him back I think and overall we're seeing that this Padre's team has a certain electricity to him and in fact by the way I wasn't kidding fed titis judor in high leverage situations this year he's 10th in WRC plus number one is jerks and profar right um if you want to go by Ops a little bit more of a simpler stat then Fredo tatis shooter is 15th and profar is first so just to give you an idea like that's how great it's been um for this team this year I just you know I just just I I don't know what to say man I don't know what to say anymore so sha tatis the offense in this game wasn't really the story so I'm going to actually get that out of the way first um in this game you get a signal from Luis Aras to start things off at the bottom of the third oras has been showing some signs I think lately of picking things up I'm hoping that he can be this guy consistently over his last three games he's had um what is it over his last 11 at bats he's actually been really amazing he's drawn a couple walks which you always like to see especially for a batter like him who tends to swing at literally everything makes contact with everything doesn't strike out but he doesn't necessarily draw walk so you like to see that he had a two for three game against the Rays and then also two for four last night with two RBI on the night that bottom of the third um being the one that started things off as well as hitting another one in the bottom of the eighth inning Padres is getting some much needed Insurance because we love you Mr Suarez we love you we adore you you are our guy but it's always nice to get some inur runs so Mason McCoy after he got um on second base that was really great um Luis arise drives in uh Kyle higashioka actually my mistake it wasn't Mason McCoy that scored but higgy scores after higgy leads things off with a double it's funny while I was watching the game I was mentioning uh to someone that like it's really cool that higgy is just like a slugging Beast you know what I mean like yeah he's going to strike out a lot he's not going to get all the walks of the world but he slugs and he's come up big for this team multiple times this year I actually still remember like that remember that one game when he threw out two Runners and hit the home run or something like that I think he like single-handedly won the P raiser game it's so fun that everyone on this team I feel like has had a moment you know what I mean everyone on this team has had a moment especially in the lineup right Solano he's had a walk-off arise first home game he had a walk-off right uh Manny Machado he's had a walk-off and he's been basically a superstar caliber player for 3 months now um Xander Bogarts is like kind of the only one that hasn't really had a moment yet but other than that you know about Merill you know about profar you know about all these guys so it's just so cool that this team has been so complete all year long but uh guys first before we get into the rest of this recap and talk about one sir Joe Musgrove because we got to we got to talk about Joe jav Joe is the story of last night I mean tatis was the story but Musgrove was the one that ended up being the biggest thing to happen last night so before we get into that though guys I just need to take a second to talk to you about one of our sponsors and it's one of our longtime sponsors over at game time and here's the thing with game time folks I recently went to a baseball game game time go check it out and just like that everybody we are back thriving and vibing into segment number two of this here podcast again I want to just say one more time my apologies if I'm like little bit lower energy than you used to again I'm trying I'm trying folks we're hanging in there the voice will be back in full force I promise you but let's talk about speaking of back in full force let's talk about Joe Musgrove last night and I just I mentioned in the first segment that what's so exciting about this Padre's team is even if the number one thing their ability to produce with Runners on base in the clutch situations whatever you want to call it that even if that were to go down that it's okay because even if that isn't sustainable which it usually isn't um especially to the degree that they've been right like as a team the PES are number one in baseball in high leverage situations by nearly 30 points if you go by WRC Plus versus the second place team so if you're expecting some regression there the best news is that they've helped out where you might not even see quite as many high leverage situations that sounds weird but it's true because of the fact that the rotation the bullpen has been improved and the rotation is exciting and that is Mr Joe musve tossing an absolute fraking gem last night against a yes it is a Tigers lineup That leaves a little bit to be desired but I don't really care you know what I mean because for Joe Musgrove we just need to see that he still has it that's what we need to see out of him six innings in this one no earn runs he does give up three hits and two walks but he strikes out eight absolute magic and even his last start against the Cardinals right where he gave up three runs he still went six Innings he still gave a quality start and then before that he had the near perfectto right with going seven Innings oi one hit and then nine strikeouts against the Mets he has looked really really really good for a long time now basically since going out the I he's not given up more than three runs in a start um he hasn't given up more than seven hits or forget that he hasn't given up more than three hits um except for that one start against the Cardinals when he gave up seven all of his starts he hasn't given up all that many hits the the just the the master of the Raz matz you know he's been back and he's been fooling hitters and he looked great especially his curveball broke a lot last night really like to see that it broke at the right time I just thought he looked awesome also generated five whiffs on his cutter which we like to see um as well um but most importantly about Joe Musgrove last night is the velocity and and here's here's the thing here's the thing there was real concern for me about Joe Musgrove and I talked about this and I talked about why I thought that the trade deadline that one of the more exciting or scary things was the fact that they didn't Target much starting pitching yes they traded for Martin Perez but they didn't go for your flarities or your Garrett crochet who' been rumored for so long and the reason why I thought it was exciting is cuz one of my questions was you know Joe Musgrove it's just not usually at least and maybe I'm totally dead wrong about this and I should have you know considered his specific injury but for me I looked at this as this mus grve last year he's in August he's dealing then he gets shut down for the rest of the year right shut down for the rest of the year then you come back into spring training and everything and then you're immediately getting hurt again that's not a good sign so he lands back on the I at after a little bit and after getting lit up then he comes off the iil and then he goes back to the iil again that just to me is usually a bad pattern and a sign that something is more wrong and I was bracing for the worst I was bracing for like a yeah musr hat for the rest of the year but then the trade deadline came along and thankfully it looks like they did have a plan because they knew or at least assumed that you darish by the way according to Kevin AC you know uh is is expected to potentially return to the team this week preferably or not preferably um specifically Wednesday so that's really exciting it has not been officially confirmed yet at the time of this recording but that's cool and then Musgrove that I was hoping okay cool the reason they didn't prioritize starting pitching is because they know they're going to get those two back and they think that they can put something together at the back end of the rotation whether it be Randy whether it be U Matt Waldren R um we miss you buddy uh whoever it be that um you know that they they knew something instead of just yeah we're going Bullpen and we don't know what because that would have been a bad sign if they invested heavily in bullpen and we didn't get musk darish back that would have been very like what the heck guys you know what I mean that would have been a lot especially to give up that many um assets as we've talked about a lot in the show but Musgrove seems genuinely back um just exceptional stuff and his velocity was up in fact his pitch maximum with his fast ball he 95.6 miles per hour that is the hardest he's thrown of any pitch all season long uh by nearly like I think it was like like6 miles per hour what of his previous starts he had that and that to me matters more if musgrow gave up more runs last night if he gave up four I would have been more excited just because to see that he seems to be regaining what he lost before regaining the fact that that was another issue by the way was the velocity dip and it coincided with him getting a little bit hit up at the beginning of the year so absolutely love to see it um mus gr we love you very much and I pose a question to you guys now do you think do you think hear me out here do you think musve could be the game one starter in a playoff series I think that's like a little bit of a storyline to follow on top of the playoff race 2 of course I think it's going to be interesting to see you know you've got CE and you've got King those are the other two guys who could be the first starter and then if UD Darvish comes back now he's going to be coming back later and he's still going to have to ramp up and get back to it but I could see a world in which they're like you know what Musgrove has just been our guy and we want to start off with a guy that is just a master at giving us quality starts versus a CE who we love you CE but also it's not like completely um impossible that he has one of those four inning games and he gives up five um but so that's why I think you might want to save him for like the Clincher you know what I mean he's the one that could come in and deliver the the absolute Gem and wins a game by himself I don't think Musgrove has the same ability let me be very clear same ability to be a starter that goes out goes seven Innings like what he did against the Mets although although with the way he's been pitching maybe he does but but I just think that he's got like a a high floor I think is the way to put it so I'm just curious what you guys think so leave your questions or comments um if you want you could DM me or you could leave a comment on YouTube but shouts to Musgrove genuinely looks back and that's huge for this Padre's team that has had some questions with their rotation especially as of late man I mean seriously does it feel great to have our guy back does it feel great I just I I'm just thrilled absolutely thrilled folks absolutely thrilled but also speaking of you know sting me some of your questions of what you could do so just the way Michael Carlin did on Twitter and he dm' me last night saying can we get a Mason McCoy appreciation segment I feel no one is talking about how this guy has done all we could have asked and more since kimp was sent or Kim kimp uh Kim was sent down um great great question Michael and I think that that's worth bringing up and it kind of ties into what I was saying in the first seg which is what's so exciting about this team this year is that they again it's always been next man up so Hassan Kim he's a little bit of flack maybe a little bit most of that coming from you know Padre's Twitter and whatnot but Hassan Kim is just an excellent Defender he's just such a solid player and next to your pro fars and your J cworth like one of the best walk rate players on this team 12.3% I believe he's actually the leader in walk R yeah he's currently now uh the leader in walk r on this Padre's team you know like that's not necessarily an easy player uh for you to replace in the middle of a season right and past Padre's teams we worry about that but Mason McCoy has come up and not only been like an okay glove he's had a couple of like mistakes I think over these last two weeks or so um in 13 games he's played he's had a couple like base running things or whatever um but it doesn't matter he's been Fielding pretty well and most importantly um dare I say is he's been hitting a decent amount he's currently rocking a WRC plus of 107 and while he's not hitting the ball very hard his isolated Power number is 0.56 that's bad just so you guys know like below 100 like that that's really really bad and he has a slugging the ball basically at all he's got a 333 sluggy percentage what's been great about him is the walk rate he's currently got a 366 on base percentage 11.9% walk rate to go with that that's been his thing he has been exactly what I think almost every team looks for when one of your sort of players that matters one of your Playmakers goes down and in my opinion what that is is it's just a guy who can get on base be a okay hitter and not be disastrous in the field I feel like that's what you look for and I haven't heard any you know recent updates on hosan Kim but for right now Mason McCoy looking really really solid you know at 29 years old I don't think this guy is necessarily you know some highlevel prospect that we should expect too much out of or it's like we should like let's hold on a little bit we shouldn't be saying oh wow yeah look forget Kim Mason McCoy is the shortstop until de is ready right no not necessarily although if he keeps playing this way it might like if if Kim is out for a long time that would be like a really interesting conversation if that ends up happening where it's like McCoy is like a 108 WRC plus guy plays okay defense and we're just like you know what if kimley is in free agency let's just stick with this guy and then when Dev is ready that's what we can hope for right so again that's what's so exciting about this pot's team is someone's always stepped up but I agree with you Michael he deserves credit he's made plays he's got on base he's even moved over Runners a couple times with bunts absolutely love to see it um this Padre's team man so much depth uh and depth matters and Superstars matter obviously even more but they have absolutely supported each other the whole way through and it's been a blast to see but folks we're not done just yet no no no no no no we got to talk about some Power Rankings folks because why the heck not as voted on by the rest of the lock on MLB channel we're be going over those I'll be posting a picture on go check it out and just like that everybody we are back thriving and vibing it's a segment number TR um one thing I wanted to mention actually another nice thing about yesterday's game was I don't know how to say his name exactly but jery Pro far uh his little one his son Kyrie Pro uh like threw a pitch like pretty on point and I was like man athletes are amazing aren't they aren't they amazing but anyway shouts to profar who just like everything about him with his son and everything like just he has been like The Vibes King the whole year in every way and that like genuinely like warms my heart seeing that you know what I mean he threw a strike it was great he threw a dime it's this little guy you know what I mean threw better than me I can't I can't even throw like a a water bottle let load of baseball so anyway folks let's get into the power rankings update I am displaying it now on YouTube let's list it down in terms of the top 10 as voted on by the rest of the locked on MLB Network hosts we've got for the top 10 the Dodgers then the Yankees the Phillies the Diamondbacks the Brewers Orioles Guardians Braves Padres coming in at number nine and then the Minnesota Twins at number 10 so here's what I'm gonna say I think that there was an overwhelming bias here against or I'm sorry in favor of the Dbacks because of the fact that they made the World Series last year and don't get me wrong they are great but to me if we're just basing it on you know what a team looks like right now if we're if we're basing it on kind of how you know the fact that both the Padre's and Diamondbacks have both been electric since the All-Star break and I get it I get like saying you know I I wouldn't mind anyone saying I I rank the dime backs a little bit higher because I think that you know they have made the World Series before and I like the fact that you know Corbin Carroll has been finally making a little bit of a a comeback for them right and even without him doing well all year um even without him even doing amazing except for until this recent stretch I totally relate to people being like you know what I I just trust that team more you know what I mean I I get that but to put them five spots ahead of the Padres lock down on beos what are you talking about and especially why are are the Atlanta Braves ahead of them now here's the thing I get it the Braves have a little bit of an install base right not just I'm not talking about fan base I'm talking about in terms of you know this is a team that's been a perennial Contender this is a team that has on paper a lot better team than nearly any team that's currently ranked above it right that's kind of a fair point to make like they really do and In fairness they've been really heating up lately but I don't understand how you can list a team that not only just has less wins than the padri but a team that might not even make the playoffs the Mets are currently just a half game back of them right now and don't get me wrong I understand cressel might win the sa young raldo Lopez has been really good for them even M you know Max freed former Padre has been very good for them but in general what I see is just like what are we looking at the Padres have like eight more wins than them and I understand you know they have no aunia he's been out for the whole season right like that's been a thing but to me I will gladly face a team that basically with the exception of Marcel Ozuna all of their offensive players have ressed and been really disappointing this year I don't think that means I think they're going to be bad forever but it's like Michael Harris that's a superstar you know Rookie of the Year type of player he's got an 81 WRC plus this year Shawn Murphy the star catcher that they've had that they traded from from the A's he's got a 90 WRC plus this year compared to 129 last year and in general his career of 116 average right like his his season's been really bad then you look at Matt Olsen has he been doing better sure he's been a lot better um as of late but in general still just a 107 WRC plus he's not doing all that great and he's striking out and he's swinging at things that are more inside the zone and whatnot you know um Austin Riley 115 WRC plus he's been getting it better a little bit but only 19 home runs this guy was like the best player or best third baseman potentially in the National League at one point I think for a lot of people so you look at that Azie Ali is being hurt he hasn't produced this year I just don't understand how you can rank them higher when so much of the season their best players haven't performed I'm if you want to say like Power Rankings I think the the Brees rotation is better than the Padre's I hey I'm okay that's a debate but for me to put the Braves above above the padr is ridiculous the next team is the Guardians and the Brewers the Brewers you you guys know how I feel I think that on paper and I think that I will give the lock on host benefit of the doubt that this list isn't necessarily geared towards who we think will win the World Series right but um the Brewers you know paper really have been an amazing team right like they've got your Willie adamus who's going to be get paid a lot this off season I think in a way that's similar to Dan B Swanson and for Padre's fans wondering is he going to be a padre no I don't think so and also they shouldn't because they have de why would you give a you know extended contract to a shortstop when you have a top level shortstop and when you're already spending a lot of money elsewhere but in general like yeah the the Brewers have been a really solid team Jackson chrio while he's not going to be a rookie of the year guy um he's the type of player that like could be better than our rookie of the year down the line he's a top LEL Prospect he hit a grand slam the other day he was just bad for a lot of the season right and that's why he's not going to win rookie of the year he's got a 11 18 WRC plus but even still but no Christian Yelich I look at this team and I say this is a solid team I like your Garrett Mitchells right like monasterio has been okay for them so far Jake Bowers has done a couple things every now and then but it's just hard for me to rank them high based on the fact that we know that the Brewers have been very regular season Merchant for a long time but again if lock down host if they're going by regular season I understand it the Guardians the Guardians have slowed down a little bit um Jose Ramirez isn't going to come close to winning MVP I don't think this season which is crazy because this guy's going to go 440 and like no one cares like that just to turn around for a second the star players in baseball this year it's been such a good year like there's been so much good um from this um League this year it's been really really breathtaking to watch but when I look at the Guardians I see a team that I don't understand how they possibly keep this up right I understand that Kate Smith has been amazing I understand that they have the best closer in baseball in Emanuel classa he's been amazing I get that but for me I'm like are we really going to trust a Gavin Williams a Tanner BBY you know and even a Kate Smith are we going to trust these guys as much I just don't know if this team with all the injuries that they've had to that rotation of theirs how much they've lost with your McKenzie with your Shane Bieber like we're really going to put them at number seven like we really think that this is totally sustainable or are they just having one of those fun really good Seasons that a lot of ball clubs that don't spend a lot of money tend to have right or a lot of these type of teams you know the Rays Guardians and Brewers are kind of the leaders of that like we've seen this before I don't really necessarily see anything from them going forward and I also think that the Yankees at number two is way too high are they good yes but I don't trust that rotation and I understand that they have to be in the top 10 they do even though they're a team that has is like a lineup that's has less depth than even the Padre teams of old that had poor depth issues cuz they're entire team right now right now is basically wotto Aaron judge now if you go by statistics those guys have been basically as a Duo as good as any duo in the history of baseball um except better right the only Duo the only Duo based on stats is L garri and Babe Ruth so I understand ranking them highly but I look at that team and I look at the rotation you don't trust a lot of guys in that rotation it's the type of rotation that keeps you alive during the regular season but come playoffs you get a lot more nervous outside your Garett Kohl's um and I just look at the fact that there's too many atrocious players on that offense I think that's my issue right yes Jazz chol has been awesome for them and maybe that's part of the reason why people are excited yes um John Carlos Stanton has been really solid too but I just look at some of those bad players your vulpes your glab bror is I mean Alex Verdugo is a mess Trent Grisham our former guy so I don't totally see it for them I get it but that's still a little bit High Phillies for me at three is perfect I just think that that team is the number one playoff team that I don't want the Padre's to face if they can um out of all the teams and the Dbacks too but I would really like to avoid uh the Phillies because I still think they've shown you that they can catch fire and they have a little bit more than the stat sheet shows and they can get on fire they have a good vibe to them they've got a great rotation in Ranger wheeler and Nola to start things off and even at Christopher Sanchez so that team I actually think should be number two um and then the Dodgers number one um look here's the thing guys can the Padres still win this division it's possible i'llbe it unlikely I think that with the Dodgers the thing I'm worried about with them is not just Otani but the fact that he brings an aura to them that might change their losing ways in the postseason that's the thing I'm worried about um he's potentially going to be a 50/50 guy which is crazy uh 50 home runs 50 stolen bases they got mie Betts back they got Freddy Freeman back he's been raking I'm okay with putting them number one um and especially based on how this is this chart is working if we're mostly looking at regular season right that's why you got to put the Brewers and that's why you got to put the Dodgers up there because we all know those teams in the playoffs are bad and by the way so are the Braves I know the Braves won that World Series of 21 but Braves also are kind of known for not being great in the playoffs so that's just me that's my analysis that's my breakdown of the power rankings so far let me know know what you guys think where you would put the Padre's and again I'm just trying to be as objective as possible whatnot so just let me know leave comments or DM me on Twitter whatever you think based on the lockdown MLB rankings you can check them out on lockdown podcast Network on Twitter for yourself as well but with that all being said that about does it ladies and gentlemen for today's edition of the lock on Padre's podcast the only pod that may be better than the Padres themselves tomorrow's episode we are going to be talking with arm Lon of just baseball about the Padre's fire up system because there's no game tonight for some reason I don't remember the last time this happened that you're playing a team and it's still the same team and then you just take one day off in between the series I don't remember that outside of postseason Series so that's weird um but whatever we're going to be doing that and then we're going to be recapping whatever happens on Wednesday's game uh for Thursday and then we're probably going to be doing a crossover at Ben cpic of locked on Giants as well this Friday so that's what to look out for and hopefully my voice and everything is back to being 100% soon but until that next time stay safe and of course stay faithful my five faithful homies take care
