>> MATT. THANKS, MATT. HIGH HEAT AND HUMIDITY WILL CAUSE DANGEROUS CONDITIONS ACROSS THE TRI-STATE AREA TODAY, MORE THAN 60 SCHOOLS IN PHILADELPHIA THAT DO NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING WILL DISMISS STUDENTS EARLY FOR A SECOND DAY IN A ROW, BUT THERE WILL BE IMPACTS FOR EVERYONE DUE TO THIS EXTREME HEAT. NOT JUST PARENTS AND STUDENTS IN THE CITY. ACTION NEWS REPORTER KATHERINE SCOTT IS LIVE ALONG KELLY DRIVE, ENJOYING THE EARLY MORNING SHADE OUT THERE. GOOD MORNING KATHERINE. >> GOOD MORNING MATT. YEAH, IT'S FEELING PRETTY GOOD SO FAR. OBVIOUSLY THE SUN IS NOT UP YET, SO THAT'S REALLY HELPING THE SITUATION HERE. WE'RE GETTING A LITTLE BREEZE OFF THE WATER. WE'RE ALONG THE QUIET KELLY DRIVE RIGHT NOW. WE HAVE SEEN SOME PEOPLE COME BY. WE ANTICIPATE PEOPLE WILL BE GETTING IN THEIR WORKOUTS EARLY TODAY. IT'S GOING TO BE A HOT ONE. THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW IN WHICH THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF INSTRUCTION AT THE PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL DISTRICT WERE CUT SHORT BECAUSE OF HIGH TEMPERATURES. >> WE LAUGHED BECAUSE WE ALREADY PREDICTED IT. WE WERE LIKE, OKAY, WE'RE GOING TO START BEFORE LABOR DAY, WHICH WE ALREADY WERE, LIKE, THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE HALF DAYS ALL WEEK BECAUSE OF THE HEAT. >> THAT WON'T BE SEPTEMBER. HONESTLY I THINK THEY SHOULD MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AFTER SEPTEMBER 3RD. IT'S A SHUFFLE THAT'S ALL. >> IT'S ALL HAPPY TO NOT HAVE HIM SWEAT. >> STUDENTS AT 63 PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS, INCLUDING BATES MARTIN AND FAIRMOUNT, ARE DISMISSING THREE HOURS EARLY FOR A SECOND DAY TODAY. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT CITING INADEQUATE COOLING IN THESE BUILDINGS. ALL OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE DISTRICT'S ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES WILL OPERATE ON A NORMAL SCHEDULE. PROGRESS IS THERE WHEN IT COMES TO AIR CONDITIONING AND SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT, BUT IT'S SLOW. UNFORTUNATELY AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON, A BUNCH OF POOLS HAVE ALREADY CLOSED FOR THE THOUSANDS OF KIDS. WILL BE OUT OF CLASS AT MIDDAY. NEED A PLACE TO COOL OFF? BUT WE DO HAVE A LIST OF THE OPEN POOLS ON OUR WEBSITE. THE TEMPERATURES WILL SOAR IN OUR AREA TODAY, FEELING LIKE IT'S MORE THAN 100 DEGREES. THE NATION'S LARGEST POWER GRID OPERATOR, PJM INTERCONNECTION, BASED IN AUDUBON, ISSUED AN ALERT TO PROVIDERS IN WASHINGTON, DC, AND 13 STATES, INCLUDING PENNSYLVANIA, DELAWARE AND NEW JERSEY, WARNING OF CONDITIONS THAT MAY REQUIRE GENERATORS TO OPERATE AT THEIR MAXIMUM OUTPUT CAPABILITY. MEANWHILE, DOCTOR DARIEN SUTTON SPOKE TO GMA ABOUT PROTECTING YOURSELF DURING THESE EXTREME TEMPERATURES, INCLUDING KNOWING THE SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE, AND ALSO KNOWING HOW MUCH WATER YOU NEED. >> THERE'S A NEW STUDY FROM HARVARD HEALTH THAT QUANTIFIES BASED ON AGE, AND I THINK IT'S HELPFUL IN INTERESTING. IF YOU LOOK, FOR EXAMPLE, AT TODDLERS AND THOSE IN SIXTH GRADE, YOU'LL THINK ABOUT 32 TO 40OZ OF WATER A DAY JUST FOR COMPARISON, A BOTTLE OF WATER IS ABOUT 16OZ ON AVERAGE. AND THEN FOR US ADULTS, WE NEED UP TO TWO TO EVEN THREE OR MORE LITERS OF WATER A DAY. NOW, 20% OF THAT COMES FROM OUR DIET, BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE HOLD OF HOW MUCH YOU'RE DRINKING. >> LIVE ALONG KELLY DRIVE WHERE THE WORKOUT CROWDS ARE EXPECTED SOON. THE PHILADELPHIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH ISSUED AN AIR QUALITY ALERT, A CODE ORANGE ACTION DAY, TODAY, WHERE PEOPLE ARE URGED TO PROTECT THEIR HEALTH BY LIMITING STRENUOUS OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES.
