Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald Inexplicably SNUBBED From ESPN’s List Of Top 100 Athletes Of 2000s

locked in here uh over at PHX Cardinals that's what Bo Brock's doing uh he's he's he's ready to just grind you know so we we told him get the hell out of out of Arizona get out of the heat for a little bit and uh come back to us ready to go I was proud of him though you know he can't quit phnx Cardinals none of us can when we're away from it uh and he was with his family late last night and off to the side cutting Clips doing some social and I'm like bro can you just stop and he can't stop and and that's the beauty of of this show and this community is we're all in all the time uh and offseason whether it be where Kyler Murray is ranked or Jonathan Ganon or Monty Austin for James Conor right left off the top 10 and when you mess with a ESPN lists top 100 athletes of 2000s legend the best player in franchise history everybody takes note and what I'm referring to Damon the fine folks at ESPN they saved their worst take for last ESPN came out with something called the top 100 athletes of the 2000s so 2000 to 2010 who were the best athletes across all sports so it could be track and field it could be you know men's women swimming NBA NFL whatever 100 players listed Larry Fitzgerald inexplicably snubbed Damon from this list your immediate thoughts and reactions to this from ESPN who losing more credibility by the day I I mean he absolutely belongs on the list uh I'd say based off of legacy and Longevity alone like he he's the guy that you point to Eric Ruby and I were talking about this before the show like he is Phoenix sports right he is Valley Sports so I I think that that that lasting impact kind of makes a makes a difference it should at least on this list like when when you consider that you know he he is the guy for all of you know Cardinals fans and and just Valley sports fans in general um here's what I will say about this list first and foremost there's not a ton of NFL players but I think the players that they've included especially near the top there's a recency biased right so Patrick Mahomes is the highest rated NF player he is at number 18 okay and again I don't have an issue with that but we're talking about of the 2000s thus far so I think I misspoke at the top of the show it's like 2000 onward Patrick Mahomes is number 18 Aon Donald who just retired as number 20 those are two players that entered the NFL landscape 10 years ago or less Mahomes was was just drafted a little bit more than a decade or a half decade ago so again like you think about there's 's no Ed Reed on this list I mean some of the greatest players that ever play football are not on this list9 like do you believe just as we start this conversation that like Patrick Mahomes as an athlete is is one of the greatest players of the last 20 years I think he's gonna be an all-time quarterback but like when I think of great athlete I'm not sure like he immediately comes to mind of course that he is but if we're talking about the top 1% like I think athlete I think like freak of nature four four speed can jump the highest and I I get it it's his arm talent but what do you think are you are you content with where Mahomes ends up on this list I mean I yeah I don't I don't think that that's necessarily that wouldn't be my talking point at least because like think about like a lonel Messi for example he's third overall he's not like a pure power athlete but he was what he's done is made him potentially the goat of his Sports so I would say to me at least the way that I see Patrick mahomes's career trending I believe that when it's all said and done we're going to say he's the greatest quarterback of all time in my opinion so I just think that quarterbacks impact the game so much at an NFL level Tom Brady's Super high on this list like he's number five Tom Brady we've all seen his combine like he's not what you would consider like athletic necessarily you know when it comes to comparing against professional athletes so yeah I mean that that point doesn't really bother me as much I I think it's just more about like how much you dominated your sport uh throughout your career based off of like how I'm seeing this list but then you have then you have stuff like like Nicole jic is is number 28 overall like that doesn't I mean I he's won one Championship like he's a great player he probably will get on this list or you have uh you know here at Rory malroy at 93 like that I don't I don't know that I necessarily agree with that one but I I have other issues other than Patrick Mahomes to be honest yeah Ali I MCG saying is it athlete or is it accomplishment I I I think that's a great question I don't think ESPN can even answer that question because again like if you ask somebody who are the the three best receivers of all time I think You' get Jerry Rice I think you get Terell Owens in the mix Randy Moss and then Larry fitzgeral would be in that discussion and I love Calvin Johnson he's in the Hall of Fame and he was dominant for a brief period but retire Calvin Johnson vs. Larry Fitzgerald early and I'm sorry his accomplishments and he didn't get to play with CT Warner paling compared to Larry Fitzgerald I bring that up because Randy Moss is 27 he's the highest rated receiver I don't have an issue with this at all I think Randy Moss again top three receiver of all time I think a lot of people would put Randy over Fitz like I'm not gonna have that argument today I have no issue with with this that discussion though you want to do that that's fine Calvin Johnson being at not only ahead of Larry Fitzgerald but Larry Fitzgerald being off the list Calvin Johnson being in the top 60 at 57 is an embarrassment I'm sorry like that's when you go off of the line at mcg's point is this the best athlete or is it the accomplishment or is does it mirror both because Calvin Johnson was on a lot of egregiously bad Lions teams and so so is Larry Fitzgerald but the difference is Fitz's was always the best player on the Cardinals and at the end of the day will that team in 2008 2009 to the Super Bowl yeah and that and Calvin Johnson was one and done multiple times in the wildcard round with Matthew Stafford again I'm not putting that on Calvin Johnson I'm just saying Calvin Johnson to me if he's deserving so is Larry Fitzgerald yeah I I I see what your point is and actually I do have an answer for you on on the accomplishments versus Athletics it says here yes ranking the top 100 most accomplished a since 2000 wasn't quite so easy so it is an accomplishments thing and and honestly like if if that's what it is then then I do believe that Calvin Johnson's ranking is egregious because yeah I like I I might get a lot of people mad at me in the chat here so I you know I'm gonna I'm gonna tread carefully but I Calvin Johnson's Peak was higher than Larry Fitzgerald's Peak like his the best season of calv I don't disagree with that at all 2 yards almost like right I don't disagree with that yeah but he he didn't sustain it and he doesn't have the Legacy that Larry Fitzgerald has Calvin Johnson's Legacy is that he retired after nine seasons and what could be you know the second maybe most talented receiver we've ever seen and and he called it quits a little bit early because he played for a franchise that was you know going nowhere whereas Larry Fitzgerald's Legacy is he's the guy of the fifth biggest city in America when it comes to sports so if if it's accomplishments then I would say Larry Fitz absolutely belongs in this list and and Calvin Johnson being 57 that's egregious because like to's not on the list like you you mentioned to he he's you know in the Sim in that same you know realm of of wide receiver as well but he's not even on the list either and Calvin Johnson you have him in like you said in the top 60 almost in the top half like that seems pretty ridiculous to me I think this is one of their rankings where they're just like yeah remember Calvin Johnson he was 6'5 he was just inducted the Hall of Fame let's let's get Calvin on this list so you put that aside for a second and then you start looking at some of these other NFL players and again I would have I would have Ray Lewis and Ed Reed much higher but then I look at some of these other players on this list specifically in the NFL okay Aaron Rodgers is in like the back half of the 90s he's at 91 seems a little underrated to me I won't lie yeah and that's fine derell Rivas at 96 over Larry Fitz Shield's also a joke I'm sorry like derell Rivas great player Hall of Famer was on a lot of shitty teams for the New York Jets uh was did he win a Super Bowl for the Patriots probably but he wasn't the driving force of that team Larry Fitzgerald with Kurt Warner was the driving force of the Super Bowl team for a team that had never won anything D derell Rivas is is was on the all you know decade team so is Larry feral to his position derell Rivas was not as impactful at Number 96 Larry fer being left off this list is a joke like I you want to have your cake and eat it too that you know what this screams and I hate doing this this is an incredibly East Coast biased list from an NFL standpoint you've got a ton of players that played in the in Central Time Zone and a ton of guys who played East Coast you got two guys from Baltimore and Ed Lewis and Ray and um and Ed Ed Reed and Ray Lewis Calvin Johnson who went to Georgia Tech played in Detroit Middle America obviously Randy M has played a bunch of football out in the East Coast and derell revas played most of his NFL career on the East Coast this is an East Coast list because ESPN is is located in Bristol Connecticut it's not complimentary I mean Aaron Rogers played football you know in Middle America but he played out out west for his Collegian career I do think that they had a bias against the West Coast looking at this list I'm looking at number 73 here on this list now I didn't even see this at first Mookie Betts that's awful who is currently like in his eighth year of professional baseball has won one MVP like that he has no business being over Larry Fitzgerald at this point of his career in my opinion at least but the thing that the thing that bothers me about lists like this is when they when they start I know that it's like a fun exercise and whatever but when you start comparing sports and like leveling out like they put a cricket player at 97 I would he's the one Cricket player on the list I would imagine that he's probably like the goat of cricket or something you know so then how do you how do you measure that against like oh he's than you know Calvin Johnson who's the fifth best receiver of all time like that that's kind of like a weird weird thing like I don't understand how you can how you can make that like a objective type of of answer there or like Shawn White's here at 702 behind Mookie Betts like Shawn White was like revolutionary you know so it's this is why like list like this who is mie bets who did mookie B spend majority of his crew with the BOS the Red Sox and the Dodgers the Dodgers yeah yeah two of the four premier franchises in baseball essentially methodology at the bottom of this article is experts in individual sports were asked to rank their top athletes in the sport since January 2000 they don't say where these experts come from and they don't say and this is more important if the experts are still currently involved with their said sport or do they and this is our like asterisks every time we look at one of these lists are these just the slappies at ESPN they're in the cafeteria is Mike Tannon bomb your expert right that's that's what I'm taking this as this is not hey we took a bunch of Hall of Famers from the 2000s to vote on this and this is the list like they do with the NFL top 100 list let's just get the best players in the league over the last 20 years let's have them put together no no no who who is on under payroll ESPN that has an East Coast bias that can put this list together that has a big brand bias that can put this list together that that is it's the most ridiculous list Larry Fitzgerald not only had a better career than Kelvin Johnson the longevity piece the winning percentage the playoff moments like say what you Playoff Larry want baseball is a game of regular season statistics right the NFL I guess you could argue it's a little bit of both but people are remembered for what they do in the month of January like I couldn't tell you what Patrick Mahomes regular season statistics were Larry Fitzgerald had the most dominant postseason of any NFL receiver in the history of the NFL ever better than anything Calvin Johnson did certainly with his oneandone playoff games and I like Calvin Johnson better than anything to did as a member of the Eagles or the Niners Randy Moss with that you know 17 and0 or 16- one Patriots team Larry Fitzgerald every time he he averaged he was at one point averaging over 100 yards per game in the postseason I think he still did at the end of the day during his postseason run 2008 to 2009 he was averaging like 140 yards per game in the postseason that's what that's accomplishments you're willing your team to Victory against the best in the NFL with usually defenses that were middle of the pack or worse with no running games right sometimes Anquan Balden wasn't available to play you had no complimentary receivers it was just like hey Carson Palmer hey Curt Warner Larry Fitzgerald is gonna carry you to victory On Any Given playoff Sunday and that's just very very disheartening yet not unexpected that he's not on this list yeah and and that's actually I mean I think that that's that should be something that is talked about is yeah who what receiver was carrying a team Like Larry Fitzgerald did when it came down to it in in postseason type of play like yeah uh you know Kurt Warner is a great quarterback but like you don't remember necessarily like the Kurt Warner moments as much as you remember the Larry fitzgeral like and that there's a reason for that uh same that that Packers game the uh where they the Hail Mary that Rogers threw and then yeah the Fitz play at the end that's like one of the single most dominant playoff performances by a quarterback non-quarterback I've ever seen in my life yeah and and Larry has a lot of those so it's it's you know it's if it's about accomplishments then yeah I think it's pretty hard to argue that like a guy that was like playing receiver willing his team to a Super Bowl is like not an accomplished player especially when you got guys like derell Rivas who are like what what what is darell Rivas really do like I can't I'm sorry I can't remember one derell Rivas play in the history of his career I can't like I Larry Fitzgerald had three touchdowns in the first half of the NFC Championship Game Larry Fitzgerald had had the what should have been the game-winning catch in the Super Bowl they put over 300 yards passing against the Steeler team they hadn't allowed 300 yards All Season what he did to Jake delman company in the NFC divisional round which by the way is you can read about that more very disheartening very frustrating not unexpected B and it's you know again like I'm I'm at the point like is ESPN respectfully going to turn to like sporty news where we're like 10 years from now we're just like remember remember we go to them for insight and like we've had me Kim on this show every time we do radio roll we're offered up people from ESPN we take advantage because I think they've got a lot of good people that work there but then you you put this stuff out there as T like you put this out there before the NFL season and how poorly your Premier players of the 2000s are represented I mean it it's it's one of the worst things I've seen this off season that's saying something because we've seen so many bad lists but I I think we're ready to turn the page on List season well real quick I just wanted to say that that your point about like who are these experts like there's zero transparency as to who's putting this list together even so it's like how how are we how seriously are we supposed to take like is this did buck alter put this list together like that's that's that's who I Envision let's get anybody who's on a coffee break at ESPN to just write some scribble some names down on a yellow notepad and that's what we're gonna go with the experts because we're ESPN it's like come on man I'm I'm just kind of numb to it now at this point like lar if Larry fit Shield saw this this you'd be like what more did I have to do literally carry the franchise my entire career he probably doesn't care though because that's that's what people that you know are in those positions do like he knows what he accomplished and he knows he he cares way more about you know us on this show the people in this chat like Cardinals fans all across the world that like love him and adore him and worship him you know like that's that's that matters way more to him than like some you know Slappy Doo list that ESPN put together so you and it's cliche too but like I'm so glad that communities like this exist and you know are Partners In All City chgo bears and pH y Eagles and everything that we've got going on dnvr Broncos because it's an outlet for people of a specific fandom to go and to have conversations and dialogue and they're not always going to be easy this team's won eight games in in two years but it's like for a long time growing up Damon and I know you're just little pup in your mid 20s here ESPN was all we had and I would wait on Sports Center I would wait on cold pizza or whatever it was and I'm like are they going to mention the Cardinals and more than often more often than not they did not mention the Cardinals it was yeah Red Sox Yankees Giants what they considered Major Brands when you know a lot of the time those franchise especially now you be are pressed to find more dysfunctional you know brands that are on the west coast compared to the east coast I East Coast Football is a joke right now it's it's a joke right now the Patriots the Giants and the Jets i l are through the worst franchise in the NFL right now yeah and I yeah it's it's just uh it is what it is like we're always going to be used to this but like you said that's what phnx sports is here for like that's what we try to provide is we we try to look out for like you know the the the fan bases and like provide that outlet of like specific coverage where you're not going to you're not going to get the you know disrespectful type of stuff when it about the franchises goat at the end of the day because you know that's that's what we're volume that he got in his career and and but you're right the quarterbacks do factor into that quite a bit lot of interceptions uh Josh 499 Fitz deserves so much better than this let's take a minute to M since it's obvious that everybody is p are completely brain dead rip it's it's become a a very hit Miss company to say the least in terms of the quality of the content they're putting out from a written standpoint I don't watch their programming all that often un Le L it's live sporting events Josh so I can't speak on a ton of what they do but like reading ESPN like that was a staple in my house you know Dam and I were talking about it off air reading Sports Illustrated in sporting news now and it's just like they've unfortunately let it let it go to the point where like I can't take this I can't take this seriously it's not just because I'm a Cardinal fan I think most people if you ask him who had a better career derell Rivas or Larry Fitzgerald they would look at you and be like what the are you talking about like Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best players of all time what are you talking about derell Rivas playing for New York and New England though that's it but that's why he's on there yeah no it's true I mean I I think but I think that that would be the consensus opinion might you know kind of push towards that that side of things as well because he played for the Patriots and the Jets and that's what people remember Larry Fitzgerald should and I believe he will have a statue outside a State Farm Stadium one day absolutely Dell Rivas I mean like he played for like how many franchises four or five franchises he was was briefly wasn't he on Tampa Bay for a little while and three Patriots and then of course he started with the Jets and like he didn't win anything while he was there like he had to go to a winner to win right you to go to New England to win a Super Bowl Lar fiter took a losing franchise with Curt Warner and willed this team two minutes away from a champ from a Lombardi trophy against the Pittsburgh Steelers like sometimes and I think fist's numbers were great it's bigger than that it's it's about did you watch football with your eyes during that period of time because they were basically play at the same time Rivas and Fitz like not no contest what what such a joke disappointed disappointing is PN do better uh we're going to Immaculate um we're hoping that the Cardinals can get off fast start here Damon in 2024 big part of that is going to be the Rejuvenation Linebacker Preview of their defense which unlike the offense right I'm repping my Maserati Marv t-shirt now the offense is getting all the accolades the praise the respect you would assume that comes with a group that is led by Kyler Murray and Company the defense they're going to need some unsung heroes to step up and show out for this team to at least be competitive defensively they largely had the second third worst defense in most statistical categories last year I don't hold that against them at all I don't know about how everybody feels in the chat they just didn't have the Personnel to compete well in free agency they added a couple defensive tackles and then a couple sneaky kind of under the radar signings including one mack Wilson linebacker from originally the Cleveland Browns played for the New England Patriots Bill bich he is our headline player today as we preview the linebacking core very poetic Damon ma Wilson this revamp linebacking Corp for the Cardinals what do you like about it um yeah I mean I I I think honestly like can I be honest I I don't really like it that much I think I'm going to take the stance of uh kind of I'm going to maybe value them less than a lot of people are going into this season uh I see here I put wide receiver core I meant I didn't change it to linebacker core so sorry about that but uh yeah I mean Kaiser white I think is a good player um I I think you know he line the the thing about linebackers is it's probably the least impactful defensive position in current NFL like an offall linebacker so you're not going to I think it's intentional that the Cardinals don't have a ton of talent here at off ball linebacker and that they didn't invest a ton into it because they don't see it as a position that's going to make or break their season necessarily so I think that's a great point so like I to me it's the running back of the of the defense like it's a little bit more plug-and play than it is you know a lot of other positions and I think Kiser white is a is a decent player I don't think he's going to hurt you and I think he's a good leader and I think he provides a lot of intangibles uh that you know when when he's not playing last year you obviously see uh that he you you felt his presence missing um but Ma Wilson to me is more of a uh a kind of like your third linebacker guy in my opinion like he'd be the guy that I would want subbing on uh kind of in pass wrestling situations because last year he primarily played Edge for the for the New England Patriots last season and uh uh because he he came in for injured guys like Josh uch and I I think Matthew judon got as well so he was playing a lot of edge rusher which was not you know his position that he was necessarily accustomed to at an NFL level but something that you know he he said in his own words that we'll get to later that he feels very comfortable doing and uh I I I think he's he's a guy that like I said I'd like to throw him on in third down situations let him pin his ears back rush the passer I think he's a decent player I don't think he's a bad player but I wish that the Cardinals I maybe do wish they had one more guy that I felt comfortable was kind of like in that Kaiser white role of like being a a kind of set in stone starter they just needed so much this offseason that you know every time we do the the PFF Mock Draft simulator there'd be quality three down linebackers that would fall to this team right like uh was it jeremi Trotter son fell from Clemson every time we did one and it's just like they need everything else they can't go and take one and I'm with you like I part of the reason I like this group and I wasn't being tongue and cheek and you echoed it is that this franchise as early as three years ago prioritized inside linebacker with just about every position on the team like it was it was a point of emphasis for Steve K that it's become a just a joke that's been beaten to death but like Steve K would watch what the niners were able to do with novaro Bowman's and the Patrick Willis's and now the Fred Warners and company and they would say like hey I want that and it's like well no that's just a part of their defense and by the way they found those guys in the mid the late rounds like Fred Warner was a day three pick a day two to day three pick yeah and Steve K's like I'm just going to get him in the first round and even if they don't play this position and they don't have the the natural ability to play it they're going to be big and and have really good measurables that they'll instantly become a star inside linebacker because to your point it's thought of largely as the running back of the defense so he took an Isaiah Simmons and he took a Hassan reick and he took a z Collins and he's like hey guys this isn't your natural position at all let's let's play this role and it I I don't want to downplay this I want everybody to to hear me when I say this those decisions specifically and Kim had a lot of bad ones were the most impactful in literally setting this franchise Personnel department on fire like what he did trying to convert multiple inside line or first round picks into inside linebackers put the Cardinals where they were at this time last year and so Jonathan gon says okay I'm gonna get kazir white who played for me in Philadelphia who was my Captain who's going to come here and help set the culture right is he a little older now at this point is he coming off injury absolutely but again somebody that you feel like you're going to get quality football from opportunistic had an interception last year against CJ strad like can do a lot of good for you right or excuse me against Dak Prescott and then on the flip side let's go out and sign a young kid in MA Wilson that played for Nick Sabin that played for Bill Bell that understands what it takes to be a good Pro and let's see if he can take his game to the next level like you mentioned his Time with Bill bich rushing the passer next year last year in New England interchangeable chess piece that you can move around and on the Cardinal defense like let's see what he's got off the edge and speaking of that he spoke about Damon his pass rush abilities today and I thought these Mack Wilson on his pass rush ability & mentality comments Damon really interesting as to what the Cardinals May do with him yeah I mean um I wred in college a little bit kind of play outside linebacker in high school as well so it was always there you know and I just feel like uh coach mayo and Coach bich uh gave me opportunity to kind of showcase that when I got to New England because I didn't do it in Cleveland and you know I told him I can pass rush and they they gave me opportunity obviously and um we had a few injuries last season judon and uch went down and you know they were just like all right let's give him back a shot and you know it just I just knew I was I knew I always had it you know athletically I can then I can you know I can do a lot of things that you know people don't know and and then when I'm out there honestly it's just just I just feel like I can't be stopped especially on the edge like it's it's a different feel when I'm on the edge honestly like if I get a good get off like it's WS I feel like can I just give you a hot take I would rather see Mack Wilson rushing the passer than Dennis gek I'm sorry like I just I think he's got a little bit more upside cach a there's the unknown and he's a better athlete like I just if you want put him in on like coverage Downs his ability to kind of move sideline to sideline is intriguing but like if they're like hey Johnny can ma Wilson come in on third down I'm I'm willing to be open to it it's one of the things I'm looking forward to this preseason I I I just want to like I want to be clear I like Mack Wilson a lot I think he's a a great chess piece for this team for Jonathan Gan and Nick race and I think he he he can contribute a lot because of how versatile he is I I think it's like that's the type of player you want as a depth your team right who can play multiple roles who are comfortable doing that I just I just like personally I wish that we had more of a set in stone off ball linebacker starter over him so that he could rush the passer a little bit more like we're talking about because his PFF grade last year was the highest he's ever received and PFF isn't everything but he got an 81.5 primarily playing Edge rusher last year that's pretty damn hard to do Johnny like you an 81.5 grade is Elite for context so then you look back at his 2022 season where he played off ball and it was a 47.1 and he was kind of he's kind of been back and forth in his career he's kind of had roller coaster Seasons where it's been bad grade good grade bad grade good grade so uh you know I I think he he's a little bit maybe of a inconsistent player in that regard but uh he's a guy that yeah it's going to be exciting to watch him play and as far as uh you know you and Dennis gard and your and your personal uh Vendetta that you have against them uh I I mean yeah I think it it's more exciting for sure to watch a MC Wilson when when you know Dennis gardex uh like ceiling is probably not that high like he he he's a good player and he has a a good floor but it's possible ma Wilson can reach Heights that you know we've we've seen that Dennis gardak cannot let's check out that list of the linebackers once again here before we get back to mck Wilson because Damon I'm looking at this I think kazir White's B2B plus I think Mack Wilson you've got an opportunity to get to a point where he's a valuable piece of your defense move him all over the place now I'm going to skip ahead to number four Chris Barn who as Azie and a lot of people in the chat have highlighted underrated played really good for this team down the stretch when they lost kazir white right when they were struggling at linebacker Josh Woods went down who's no longer with the team Chris Barn to me Savvy veteran played good football in Green Bay if he's you know your first option Off the Bench I have no issue with that and I think he's deserved an opportunity here to compete for some starting playing time and again you hit the nail on the head earlier you're not paying any of these guys anything because your wife's making like what between three to six million dollars Max this year ma Wilson's contract is modest Owen Papo the fifth rounder last year didn't see much time has to get a little bit more physical in between the tackles maybe he has an opportunity to show what he can do on NFL Sundays this year like it's not a group that's going to set the world on fire but it's the exact kind of prototype that they want John and Ganon does not want the Steve Kim he used to call him I want two big trees in the middle of the field 6465 line no idiot he Jonathan ganam wants guys who are about six foot 61 230 240 pounds that are light on their feet that can cover a lot of space because who's doing the dirty work for the linebacking court the line of scrimmage players the Z Collins is now the BJ galaris and then now most importantly Justin Jones Blau Nicholls Darius Robinson right Dante STS the that's the literally and figuratively the first line of defense so these guys just have to have opportunities presented to them pick a pass off deflect a pass force a fumble fill a gap from time to time cover a linebacker I I think this group is going to be solid enough to be respectable and that's kind of what Mack Wilson spoke about again today is Damon it starts up front with this group like they're going to have success it's really predic on what they get from those front four yeah for sure let's hear ma Wilson talk about that yeah I mean stopping the Run kind of it starts up front honestly you know B Justin Z BJ you know all those defensive guys up front you know we we harp on telling them it's start with you guys they can't run the ball of you guys playing physical up front getting off the ball and you know just at the second level third level you know linebacker safety play and things like that we got to we got to be you know we got to have a Killer Instinct you know when it comes to guys want to run the ball if somebody want to run the ball on us we got to make for pay that's how I look at it you know I love when team run the ball like I mean show me you a man you know and cuz I'm GNA come downhill I know kazer gonna come down here I know KB gonna come down here I know Buddha gonna come flying down here so it's going to be exciting to see honestly I'm just I'm super excited about that yeah I mean a lot of good comments there echoing kind of what we've said this entire offseason Damon is like back seven even with the unknowns and we talked about at a cornerback yesterday back Seven's in pretty good shape like yeah athletes solid players not going to embarrass themselves the success of this defense is GNA come with those those four guys on the line of scrimmage end the story I yeah and I think uh I asked my friends earlier today because they're big Patriots fans what they thought about M Wilson they said that he's really good against the Run yeah they said that his his run defense was was like pretty impressive of last season and that makes sense given his uh his his grade honestly because often times that's kind of setting the edges is a huge Factor there but I I I do want to say that like I I think that the way that they're going about this linebacker core is the right way to build a winning New regime's philosophy on LBers team like like we've been talking about like yeah while while on on paper am I saying like I wish we had one guy I felt a little bit more comfortable as a starter at the same time like when you're building a roster and you have limited resources is I don't expect you necessarily to push all your chips in the middle on your off ball linebackers like that's right we've seen that it's the complete wrong way to build a team a winning team so like think about I was thinking about it right now like think about fir guys off ball linebackers that were picked in the first round I don't want to think about it Germaine Edmonds like that he's not worth that Devin Bush he's terrible like it's it's guys it's a bunch of guys like that Fred Warner like you mentioned was the 70th overall pick in the draft that's the way that I think that the Cardinals are going to want to build like we saw with the running back position this this year like we we drafted Trey Benson in the third round instead of Na looking at Nai Harris in the first round like maybe Steve K wanted to do back in the day so like that's the difference in philosophy and that's how you're going to build a winning team so the Cardinals aren't going to win the Super Bowl this season I don't I don't think anyone's expecting that we expect we expect you know progression in showing that this build of this new regime is is moving in the right direction I think year three is going to be the year that maybe you expect the playoffs in particular but that's may maybe we see it next year where they're like we're going to spend a third round pick on an off ball linebacker but they're never going to be the guys that are giving a guy a $70 million contract for five years to you know get 200 tackles and essentially that's it you know I was talking about our guy Craig Morgan yesterday he's got a tremend this article he's got a bunch of good content coming out of go phx.com and he and I were just kind of chatting about Buddha Baker and it's not apples to oranges because of what Buddha means to this team you know from a leadership standpoint but his contract's gonna be up this this offseason it's just like yeah I'm sorry the amount of time I've spent and this is not an indictment of Buddha as a person just the amount of time I've spent around this new regime it's like they do not value linebackers and safeties they do not value players that don't play the line of scrimmage with their hand and their dirt like they are going to use top 50 picks top 32 picks on if it's if it's up to them in a perfect world offensive and defensive lineman Edge rushers included like every year you'll probably going to see unless there's an mhj scenario if there's the equivalent of mhj at quarterback next year they'll dabble with that right if Kyler Murray God forbid is Never Their quarterback again they'll look a quarterback but for the most part it's like offensive line defensive line offensive line defensive line that's how they want to be built they want to be able to push people around I I love Buddha I love you know Peak you know Patrick Willis like that's that's not how teams are built in 2024 like you you got to be able to rush the passer you got to be able to stop the run and on the opposite side of the ball you got to be able to invoke your will with the peros Johnson Juniors of the world and protect Kyler Murray like that's that's the NFL there's a famous saying it's like get a quarterback protect a quarterback get after the other teams quarterback that's the NFL and so uh it's why I'm not a huge proponent taking quarterbacks High I think Max Melton to me I know this is a conversation for another day like that's Peak where I want to take a quarterback like between picks 40 and 50 yeah let's do that right because my first picks need to be either a generational player at his position Alam Marv which is a position of value now and receiver otherwise left tackle Paris Johnson Jr defensive line Darius Robinson like that's how this wants to build and it's it's the opposite of the K approach so you know there's good intent in it I think yeah I mean the the the premium positions we talked about the quarterbacks yesterday I think cornerback is absolutely a premium position and plenty of teams should spend first round picks on them but maybe the Cardinals can be a team that they feel comfortable where they know they can find a guy in the second round that that is going to have the talent of a first round guy I think so yeah because they that's what their coaching staff is built off of his being you know defensive back guys so yeah such an advantage but yeah I mean you're right like off ball linebackers and safeties are the two positions that you would deem as not premium positions probably in the NFL from a defensive standpoint these days like Justin Simmons is a free agent right now exactly he's and he's you know arguably the best safety of the last five years so off ball linebackers aren't getting like mck Wilson got paid this off season got a three-year deal it's a a two-year deal when you look at the guarantees yeah it's modest when you compare to like they're not the same caliber of player but like what Christian Wilkinson did or even like on the flip side what some of these interior offensive linemen got paid some of these guards and centers in free agency it's a different league and who knows it may swing back in their favor and I hope for their sake it does but um yeah you mentioned Trey Benson a little Murray poster in his room and it's him and his the old uniforms I can't look at it I'm like this is this is a awful it is not visually pleasing I can't believe they used to rep these so now I'm like I Andy Isabella to Marvin Harrison Jr. Tik Tock over the weekend Damon I'm sure you've seen it with all the guys working out and then that that shirtless photo of everybody I almost was not a nice person and I was going to quote tweet it and put a picture of Andy Isabella and just say look how far we've come but I didn't do that because I'm trying to be nice guy but it is my God it is night and day I mean this this franchise at the receiver position you just couldn't take them seriously they were just so undersized and now it's like Andy Isabella is not an NFL caliber player and now you have some of the equivalent of mar it's just we we we deserve this and he was a second round pick that's what's tough to swallow like you necessarily following the team at that time I know that the trade was for it was the Rosen trade right that you you got that pick from from the Dolphins and then used it on Isabella so essentially what it ended up being was you drafted Josh Rosen for nothing that's what the the overview of the trade was the only that made it worthy was they got K1 the next year they bottomed out fair but I remember when they when they took Kyler Murray and Kim went to the podium he he tried to get a first rounder for Rosen and of course everybody laughed at him and then everybody just assume it was going to be Miami Miami they Miami had two twos that day they had two second or no they had one second they traded down they watered the pick down then they gave it to Arizona and again had DK medcafe not been available had he not gone to Seattle and been a star the Isabelle pick would be easier to digest that day two of the NFL draft is going to go down as the greatest day two in the history of wide receivers for the NFL draft and you literally could not have missed harder if you were Steve K there was AJ AJ Brown Debo Samuel Terry mclen DK medcafe were all available and he just botched it to you know now to be fair he also was in nikil Harry at the back end of the first round and who was a mega bus right nikil Harry went on local radio the weekend before the draft and said Cardinals told me if I'm there at pick 33 they're going to draft me and they he had he had gotten taken by New England so they took Byron Murphy but yeah he just couldn't draft the position at all no that's unbelievable I honestly him getting a second round pick for Josh Rosen is like highway robbery after that rookie season that he had that's still pretty it's kind of impressive like I I mean not to toot Steve K's horn but like that I mean the value of the pick there was not the problem it was the player that they drafted no doubt I mean it just it's disappointing I want to draw your attention by the way let me pull this up here on my end uh speaking of Trey Benson signs his rookie deal players Trey Benson gets a rookie contract done just under the gun here ahead of training camp this is from our guy Jordan Schultz friend of the program messaged us earlier today let us know running back Trey Benson who is the lone unsigned player from the Cardinal rookie class is under contract here 2024 and Beyond says it signs a four-year deal like all non-ir rounders do the two-time all ACC performer at Florida State with a 43 speed never fumbled dur during his college career I actually didn't know that he's expected to play a prominent role for KY Murray in the Arizona Cardinal offense so again he comes in with lofty expectations but I don't think he is immediately expected to contribute he's somebody that I think is gonna have to VI for carries with Michael Carter this is James Conor's backfield all that to say I'm excited about the Trey Benson era Damon whenever it does come to fruition here in Ariz yeah I think Trey Benson in like a dynasty format if you're a big Dynasty fantasy football player I like that pick a lot yeah I I you I don't know exactly where his value is going to be I think he was like a second round pick in rookie drafts around but he's a guy that like I think is you know he's young he's gonna be fresh next season because hypothetically James Conor is going to be taking the the the you know big share of the load uh in in this season so uh but also James Connor is a guy that you know he he typically misses a couple games a season it seems like so Trey Benson is going to have to step up when he's given that opportunity and and prove to everybody that he deserves that rb1 spot next year uh but I think we're all pretty confident that he will yeah I to me it's like learn the offense work on your your pass protection build up some additional muscle it's asking a lot to take over from James Conor who is a genetic freak uh I I would say run the wheels off of James Conor this year give him as much as he can handle have it be his Swan Song and again like I hope it's not the last year for hean Buddha just because of what they've meant to this franchise but if it is let's get these guys a postseason birth man let's get these guys in the playoffs because next year it is going to feel like a little bit of a Changing of the Guard Trey Benson right some of these guys could be Jaylen Thompson's position group dominated by you know the safeties outside of Buddha so just a lot of moving Parts but this year Cardinals I hope they're loading up for uh 2024 to win a lot of games this year we're loading up at the phnx merchandise think you get Merill Kelly back Zack Gallen stops pitching awful as he has since he came back from injury minus the one game we went to for our 999 challenge Johnny how sickening does it even better
