is always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that the big pick up on first down leaves him with second and one from the gun running back gets to give they get him on the ground but it's a first down Notre Dame lines up [Applause] quickly and first down they've been running it but now the pass flushed out of the pocket fires on the and heers flat missed him sometimes you see a guy he's open you try to baby it too much and it was a bad throw offense gets set for second down throws to the wide out it's caught downfield he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense the Irish trying to strike gold in this Red Zone trip he bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one most offensive schemes are predicated on first down productivity that will not go down as a productive first down Play No it will not re give this def throw toward the end zone picked off right at the goal line going the other way and he's got room he is finally out of bounds but he was smelling that End Zone on that return well this offense knew coming into this game with all the rain they were going to have to be able to run the ball and be more physical but of course you can't avoid passing situations and they're just going to have to be better goes on on these gimme throws they weren't able to do it there and as a result they turn it over on the first drive of the game you can barely hear yourself thinking here they're trying to get this defense off to a good start a seven yd pickup it'll be second and three well it's plays like that that will help this offense stay in Rhythm all game long if you can have that kind of success on first down running the football it just opens up your entire Playbook moving forward really nice stop there from this senior leader I like feeding my guy I like getting my running back touches feeding the ball so he can break some of those big runs but I'm also okay with these little little ones set the tone stay balanced an excellent Vision to find Running Room there and make a really good pickup before the defense put a stop to it they're lining up on First and 10 from the 38 finds his big tight end really nice job there by both guys the throw and the catch to work that defense and get the first down this Northern Illinois offense could continues to move quickly receiver on the Move gets the touch pass it's a fumble and the defense jumps on it they get that turnover it's raining in this game it's making the football slick and slippery you know ball security is going to be a massive issue both coaching staffs have preached about that to their teams in the locker rooms before taking the field these guys really need to do a better job of holding on to the football after the productive first down play at second and six to the air it's Leonard they're working that left side they'll get it to the 48 no need to measure it's a first down he's starting to get in touch with his inner Joe Montana as the Irish are moving the ball up top and I think that's always the question with the Irish every year is who's going to play quarterback we know their brain and we know who they are but are they going to get Ballers at that position are they going to get a great Ian book great Brady Quinn that's the next step and if they find that guy Notre Dame can do everything they want to do and be great in college football looking to scramble trying to escape and get it himself oh look out there he goes he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs looking for room it's l and he's able to pick up a few yards as we reached the end of the first quarter defense has dominated the early part of this game and the stats point that out emphatically well based on that we can hope to see a little more offensive explosion here in the second quarter as we get ready to get things started now the offense trying to operate in the Red Zone going for six and he can't quite make the connection as he off this Red Zone opportunity we've got a timeout here as this coach is challenging the call he wants to give the replay Booth a chance to have another [Applause] look this coach wanted to be absolutely certain on a challenge he was right previous play will be overturned getting set for the point after and the pat makes it seven [Music] nothing just about set to kick it away on the move from inside is five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 Northern Illinois takes over as the offense heads to the field after that last drive he came back to the sideline in the coach probably said you dropped it you didn't pick it up come on get on the ball David no that's not what he said and the pressure gets him back at the 8 yd Line playaction pass success has a lot to do with selling that F he could tell defense was not buying it got in the back field got the big play looking to pass it's Hampton they're trying no loose ball squirting all over the place and it went out of the back of the end zone that'll be a safe the kickoff team lined up they'll have to give it back after giving up that safety looking for a block it's price returner is tackled at the 44 and your Fighting Irish will take here come the Irish back on offense Jesse looking to take it down the field for back-to- back touchdowns I think it's really important for them moving forward too to have a lot of balance right you want to be able to keep this defense guessing P yeah and you got me searching for answers after that last drive you stack another drive on top of this their defense's heads are going to be spinning all over the place for the off looking to go up top on first down he rifles one deep to the left picked off God room on the return and a big return after the int sets up the offense for this possession this is obviously not a great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in in this game he's got to do a much better job with his decision making from the gun the Gil looking for room and how about that interior defense stuffing the run for nothing how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions got behind those pads and picked up three out to the 35 deci Rising as the crowd Gets behind this defense on third down from the gun wants to pass fires to the right and they fail to hook up on third down obviously when you're playing in weather like this the ball is very slippery and it's hard to catch the QB threw a bullet that time and his receiver just could not reel it [Applause] in makes the catch at the 30 that Nifty return sets up the offense and negates some of the yardage on the punt M Dame has the ball and ready to get moving after throwing the pick on the last drive need to take care of the ball this time Jesse we're going to find out a lot and there was nowhere to go for this quarterback and down he goes we'll see if they can get a little better protection after the sack it's second and 12 feeling some heat and this defense goes backto back sack Jack they're going to keep this drive going they'll have to make a play on Third and long from the 26 coming after him trying to make magic on the scramble at the 40 there he goes and an explosive play has him on the move and he gets it all the way to the 48 yd line and you're seeing here the difficulties defenses have trying to contain this guy if you leave a lane open or you don't sack him right away you allow him to get outside the pocket he is going to take off and he is very difficult to tackle in the open field he's got running back likeability out in space dropping back it's Leonard pressure coming and he got smacked just as he released the pass it's incomplete couldn't find his man last time and that leaves him with a third and six from the gun wants to pass oh they really could have used that catch their physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down the incomplete pass makes this series end in frustration as they turn it over on Downs first down here for the offense they'll go to the Jet Sweep to try to get the edge here that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there had a great job seeing the motion coming across the formation understanding the jet sweeps of possibility pulling a trigger going and getting the guy on the ground the give on the inside they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one they how about that defense on the snap they are in the back field with great penetration nowhere to go for the running back that defense was sitting on G waiting on o trying to get to it a little floater there that falls incomplete and on that third down play there just wasn't any timing between the quarterback as an attended Target as a result ball Falls incomplete setting up for fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way he'll take it on the return was looking for more Running Room and found nothing but more tacklers he's down at the 24 here come the Irish back on offense there have been a couple of missed opportunities for these offenses in the last couple of drives Jesse and I think for this offense here it'd be nice to hit an explosive play be aggressive and really pay off your defense's effort that last drive and instead of having to move the ball down the field consistently and then getting stopped on Fourth Downs you're right create some of those explosives take those deep shots make those big plays and he'll move his way forward to the first down they'll mark it at the 35 lot a really good looking phys phical run I'll tell you when you think of Notre Dame football too you think of all the great coaches they've had Eric Paran n rockney Lou Holtz those guys would wide open he makes the catch and he gets it down to the four yd line before he's finally stopped a terrific run after the catch on first and goal Notre Dame will try to get it in the end [Applause] zone Ed the play fake now to throw and the heat gets there and they get him down at the 14 yd line we've reached the two-minute warning and they will try to build on what has already been a dominant first half performance defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long and he feels the heat coming and it burns him up another sack third and goal coming up here to the air it's Leonard all to the end zone and it's caught touchdown Fighting Irish one of the areas they really focused on with this receiver in the off season was we need you to make more plays for us in the end zone when we're taking shots we need to be able to step up and make tough catches and David what a grab right there and I think a lot of that has to do with trusting your gu knowing where he's going to be knowing when he's going to sit down when he's not so being on the same page and then having a guy that can go get it just when the ball is near him he's going to make the play just like he did right there for six points on the run from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the Northern Illinois offense ready to go back to work they find themselves in a pretty deep hole here but maybe a chance to grab a little momentum and regroup at halftime yeah a big chance like this is this is an opportunity this is the biggest opportunity in front of them in the game right now you got to get some points on the board you got to create something positive Jesse there hasn't been a whole lot to be positive about in the first half if I'm playing quarterback I'm locating my go-to guy receiver who can I count on one-on-one to go and make me a play maybe even one on two who can go up catch the ball get us some yards and get us some points a timeout is called as this offense tries to find away to get more points on the board before the half that's caught it's Mars that me feel when he's got room open Runway ahead a huge gain on that one before he ran out of bounds and he has the first down I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the catch when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches just got to get him to the ground quickly from the Red Zone he's going to throw it a beautifully placed ball to the outside and the to no drag for the big pickup here's the chance to cut into that lead before halftime first and goal looking downfield it's Hampton lets it Fly throw to the end zone it's picked off and with the interception he'll take it all the way back touchdown not D dude you're just thinking hold him to three make him kick a field goal don't let him score points he no you turn it into offense what a play catches the ball in the end zone take a knee take a knee no sir I'm taking this thing all the way back 100 yd to the house what a [Applause] play here he comes from inside his own five and the coverage team able to wrestle him down Northern Illinois offense will take over guys we'll see what the plan is for this Northern Illinois offense these guys have taken some body blows in the first half but now a chance to do something to feel a little better going into halftime ree they got to respond now and the sack all the way back at the five here's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half this offensive line has just been unable to keep them away from the quarterback now it's second and long they'll leave it with him and a really short game before he gets a whole bunch of company from the defense you make up the game plan and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 quick hand off and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down [Applause] number it he just wanted to get it out of there from his end zone slips through the line this guy is a daring punt return man he's not going to settle for the fair catch a solid return gets a little bit of ground for the offense that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with a halftime update all right guys looks like we've got a great one in South B going on and it' be easy to say these two offenses are glad we've hit halftime based on their respective performances it would also be accurate turnovers and sacks have told the story so far and you got to believe the play calling has been the issue right time to shred those game plans and just get back to basics and with that let's send it back to the home of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish [Music] [Music] kickoff team has the ball teed up and they're about ready to go and and he takes this from inside the five nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 Northern Illinois takes over as the offense heads to the field when you're facing a deficit like this one to start the second half you really can't afford to waste a single possession fresh start here in the second half that's the only way you can look at this if you're on offense things did not go your way there in the first half it starts with one play to get our confidence going we just got to get something going early here on this drive one play Stay aggressive now now I think I can be even more aggressive on Fourth Downs I cuz obviously I've built a deficit my defense has got to make some plays for me too he is tackled but it'll be a fresh set of downs they'll snap it from the 39 first and [Applause] 10 he's going to pass catch in the middle it's Lewis I like the decision by the quarterback here just get the ball out of your hands get it to your playm maker a lot of times he'll dance and make even bigger plays than he did here but it was still a positive game to the air it's Hampton throwing right complete downfield and he's brought to the ground but not before he gets up for the first down and the huskys are moving quickly down the field 42 spider 42 movement here from the tight end they'll keep it on the ground they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that is a great play by the defensive end the most athletic players on the field play defensive end Yes you heard me Jess Rees exactly what I said great get off great job getting the Back Field making the play not able to hook up the air incomplete the defense was obviously ready for that play they've obviously been watching film they know that that pass play is one of the bread and butter plays this offense has so nice job defending it he lost it high and deep down the left side and the ball is intercepted looking for more room he steps out of bounds but not only does he get the ball back what a return to set up his offense Mame has the ball and ready to get moving looking down the middle oh he drops the football he had him right down the gut of the field instead it'll be second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again they've got the screen set up and he never had a chance as soon as he caught it the defense was right there a third and long coming up here from the gun once to pass he spins that thing down the middle and they wanted it all on third down but now dealing with fourth down this is an area of the field where it's really advantageous to just go for it on fourth down he'll try to toss it he'll try to do it himself he is brought down but man what a job to find some Running Room and move the chains Notre Dame coming to the line with another first down the give to the back they finally make the stop but the big run is plenty to move those sticks for the first down well on offense youve got to love the way your offensive line is playing in this game they're getting tremendous movement up front they're climbing in the second level and really giving these backs and ball carriers a lot of room to run all game long defense holds their ground pick up of a yard it's at the 26 there're strong and they're SC defensive tackles they're SC there're such a big big jokers in the Middle where and now on the pitch the ball's loose works his way ahead for about three yd stopped at the 23 and those are so frustrating when you're a defense and you swarm to the football and you stick the quarterback and you make him cough it up just to have the other team recover it again and you don't get it a shot toward the end zone and he throws his third pick of the day his head has to be spinning a first down for the offense on they move the tight end all over from the gun running back on the Move he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 Brown has it they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one yeah I think the running back kind of went Rog on that last running play I'm not sure it was designed to go that direction he tried to make it happen on his own fortunately ended up losing yards and a missed opportunity on third down as the defense knocks it free and fourth down is coming up Northern Illinois will line up to punt it away he's getting a lot of work fourth time he's punted [Applause] tonight he gets a block and good work by the coverage team to get the Return Man Down On The Ground here come the Irish back on offense mistakes are going to happen as they did on that last drive now how will they respond Jesse and this is the kind of guy who's going to take full accountability that was my bad that's on me I'm about to lead this offense now down the field to score some points dang pal I wish I had have played with you I didn't play with Min quarterback can't pull the trigger and down he goes at the 41 they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one looking to throw it's Leonard they're bringing heat and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the turf Notre Dame lining up to PL it away he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him deep fair catch called for and made first down here for the offense 29 keeping it on the ground with the running back banging slithering whatever it takes to get that ball up to the 32 I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points going with the ground game left slams ahead for a yard out to the 33 I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team out physical you hear a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it guys we've come to the end of the quarter and Notre Dame has the lead they've built a comfortable lead after three quars of play Let's Take a look at how we got [Applause] here one more quarter to play and it might be unlikely but hey it's college football Come Back happen offense breaks the Huddle on third down they'll try to get the first through the air that's caught it's Lewis and he gets it to the 44 yd line it'll be a first down a new set of downs after the completion the going up top on first down fires to the big fella and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one and now on second down for this offense he's looking to throw got it in the middle it's barns they'll make the stop at the 42 it's a pick up of five and that will be enough for a first down the Huskies had this offense rolling he'll just keep slinging it getting some heat not much of a chance there he just had to get rid of it to avoid the sack line getting set on second down misfired on the last play they'll go back to the air and he just flat dropped it I think he wanted to run before he secured it it's a nice adjustment by the defense here with a big lead in the game you're putting extra DBS on the field knowing the offense has to throw to get back in this one in the fourth quarter so your best cover guys on the field and they force an incompletion on the last one another incompletion on third down and it's just been that kind of day for this quarterback in this offense guys they have never been able to get into a rhythm throwing the football timing's been off accuracy hasn't been great we've seen some drops just not in sync and that's why they find themselves trailing by a lot right here lately and it's picked off for the third time today not much of a chance on the return but they'll have the ball at the 33 looking for a productive play on first down now one back in the back field and they'll give it to it just a solid stop by this soft more it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your offense up in a good spot they go to the ground good pick up on the ground and they'll Mark him down at the 39 I think he run that play on second down knowing it's going to make Third Down Easy you're not trying to hit a home run you don't need the big play right now now you know third down everything's on the table everything's available High success rate and there were some cisions in there and the D finally stopped him short of the marker Notre Dame right back to the [Applause] line on fourth down trying to keep the drive alive with the Run slammed to the ground but not before he gets the first down finally some signs of life from this offense which has done nothing in the second half it's first and 10 looking for space it's love good pick up on that play it'll bring up second and four you got to give the coaching staff credit because they really do Focus all season long on situational football with the lead late in the game if we're on offense we're trying to stay in bounds we're trying to bleed the clock and after ripping off a really nice run that guy knew I've got to get down I cannot get pushed out of bounds cannot get tackled out of bounds really really nice job Notre Dame ready to go with another first down looking for a physical attack from the gun knocked down at the 27 after a pick up of five halfway there on first down it's second and five they'll switch it up here and look to throw another interception and that's his fourth of the day of the defens is out there they're still first in fighting obviously they're way down here late in the four quarter but they still think they have a chance to win don't tell them the game's over that's a great individual effort on that interception C in the back field it's brown makes a grab and he's dragged down and defensively this is exactly what you want right you got the big lead so you can play Big Zone coverages just keep the ball in front of you keep your eye on the quarterback rally to the football gang tackle you're going to win this game fires to the big fella and an absolutely Fearless tackle giving up size still got him on the tur and they got the completion but still looking at a third down back to throw it's Hampton and this is going to be incomplete on Third and that's just the kind of game it's been for this quarterback in this offense you got a great game plan all week long you're watching it throughout practice you think you're going to have a chance to light up the scoreboard but they're just not able to hook up and he sacked a big play on fourth down to stop this drive at this point in the second half we got to make something happen we we haven't been good enough we got to score a lot of points and quickly you got got to be aggressive they tried they failed again and we have breaking news they score yet another touchdown assault inter wound right late in the fourth quarter you can run the football run this game out no sir I'm going to continue to pad my stats why and give me another touchdown and he did get that extra point through the slippery surface no [Applause] problem he'll bring it back from inside to spot didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the Northern Illinois offense ready to go back to work what a turn that last Drive was didn't pick up the fourth down in led to the scoring Drive David yeah and those are frustrating cuz you think you might get points and then your defense gives up points this has got to be a compliment football type deal the offense now needs to provide a little spark and give this defense some hope no doubt David they got to turn the page and they've got to play with a little bit more urgency here knowing they've got to get that one back and put a good drive together really confident throw and catch there big pick up and they have a first down we hit the two-minute warning and this offense is desperate to make something happen and do it in a hurry they've got it at the 36 it's a first and 10 get it out on the screen runs through a tackle and that play just never got started as he's R out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage let's see what they've got on second Down Easy scanning the field it's Hampton zings it complete to the right and he goes out of bounds after a nice pick up on that one third and short from the 44 and we might know if they plan to go for it on fourth down by what they call here got it in the middle it's brown and they knock him down but he got past the line the game they'll have it at the 49 just across Midfield first and 10 he wants to throw fires complete on the Crosser really putting together a threat now they get the first hits at the 37 here's this offense with a fresh set of downs they'll throw it on first down and it just squirted through his hands he wanted to take off and got too anxious second down after that incompletion he's looking to throw just can't pull the trigger and the quarterback is sacked at the 41 this will be the e play of the drive but a great opportunity for the defense to get off the field lofs one high and deep and that one's incomplete they weren't just trying to move the chains they were trying to move the scoreboard instead it's Fourth Down Northern Illinois will line up to pun it away able to keep them from getting a return and the ball goes out of bounds they're going to mark it right around the 20 Notre Dame has the ball in ready to get moving they're in command of this game now let's see if they tried to rub a little salt in the wound or happy with getting the W yeah and listen this this makes the postgame handshake fun sometimes if you do choose to rub a little salt in and keep chucking and keep scoring I'm here for it Jesse like your job is to score points it's my job to stop it keep the foot to the accelerator keep trying to play ball I agree 1,000% that's like Steve spayer back in the day when I was playing for the Gators you go and play for him because you want the opportunity to throw the ball so when you get in the game late you're not handing it off we were beating Central Michigan by 80 something points he was still letting us throw the football it's the defense is job to stop yeah they've had a day it's the complete and total offense they got the ground going and obviously this is why you see them you you're going to feature him cuz he can turn those legs get those extra yards but they've had balance throwing for touchdowns like this offense has been very complete today and that's why they're winning so big throws to the tight end and that pass pass is intercepted and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception Reese I know you're a little bit of a front runner so you probably would quit you actually you probably sub yourself out and take yourself out of the game but I like that they're continuing to fight keep fighting you never know what's going to happen actually you know what I know you're not going to win but it doesn't matter keep fighting to the very end still some work to do after that last completion it's second down wants to throw it's Hampton just a short pass to the tight end and he'll step out of bounds after a very productive play after this it'll be a w third down they'll try to get it through the air he's going to let one fly down the middle what a spectacular grab there as they try to finish this game with a little something to feel good about and he'll get in for the late touchdown he won prize the window go or to make the final outcome a little closer kick how about the bomb the Hail Mary coming out and the offense executes it great they throw the ball deep there's the defense man you know this ball is going deep you know they need it they got to have it and the defense just doesn't play
