Gage someone's trying to get the right amount def funer in as well so you know he said it was good strategy but it paired off it led the bit biscuit at the time but an impressive L from Charlotte power at the end I think everything looked a bit risky out there today didn't it just getting out on the right tire at the right right time and making sure that you were picking your way through this very difficult lap I mean it was very impressive stuff for all of them in the top 10 there it was great I mean even outside of the top 10 that QQ I think for me was the most exciting where it really was about he was across the line last it was a drying CET and it was ever changing that's the really Ting something that we love to watch but ultimately that last session there uh there were some R taking from Ferrari and they could have potentially got it very wrong I mean they waited they in they instead of putting in a bank C up with the with the new intermediate in the beginning they opted to wait for the second run but in the meantime the drop started to full and you can see that it didn't work for Conor I mean he was out there really really starting with the car battling a lot maybe pushing the limit a little bit too much uh but for Charles it seems s work but they could have got that wrong today well let's talk a bit more about mik the steppen because that was Sublime I mean just he he he been really on it all weekend at full of Praise on team made you Phil is team uh really thanking the engineers up foot and working hard all weekend to get that engine in and ultimately has paid off he will obviously start down the 11 but that is the best they could have hoped for today yeah and luck was so impressive the hell away you quite nobody else made it 3 Q one on the sing set 3 Q2 on I thing does that as well so conditions La laas let reinfor or the track and P we spoke about it earlier it's a 10- minute lap so Tak you quite a long time before we see the same Corner again when it could be fairly different condition in that faction so so impressive for you know six times margin to the rest of the fields to what says correct it's l me up so the margin were look bigger but that is impressive with these conditions now he's never run for the love that was on the in his career but tomorrow feels like could be the day and this is the circuit that is overt taking it we see Max do it from Lone compromised good positions of the last couple of years that do you think he'll win to but that's should get Grayson ask I think what makes it so exciting is that we you know came into today expecting there to be at least a little bit of dry running there was none at all there was barely and you're running in fp3 so the teams are going to have to rely on whatever date you they have from yesterday from fp1 to fp2 there was a bit of change in terms of they were really dominant and fp1 Max looked almost Untouchable out there and then fp2 the MCAS i' like the ones to beat so interesting to understand what setup they've decided to go for uh it looked like initially they went for a little bit more downforce than them direct competitors which I don't think is the probably the best option for Max tomorrow when he's going to come through he's going to like rely on that reli them for that race ability that straight line speed to get past everybody so I think it's all it's all up in the air really they know they know what they've decided to do what they've opted for we're going to have to wait and see but it definitely makes it excited say because uh he could in which was impressive and ultimately that was enough for for him to qualify in third and he will be parting one spot to the front R he sort of did pretty much what was asked of him today as well he did do what was asked Kinder coming a better time you know but shine fine margins and ke to he was so close to going I because in my opinion they were on that last lap too early when the track was improv and you know he finished way before the cheacker flag so hemond Hammond and both of Q tell you were very lucky to get it three and what a different clarifying grid would be looking out if Paris haven't did it three so it's just about get me decisions earlier in qualifying to go right that set you up for the key three p that confidence you're the monkeys are bet off the back if you're already in K3 and then you got the ler board even though it's something you sa ties so that all stands from a decision that's made very very early in the session and very fine margins I mean some frustrating though that those drivers in Q2 that didn't get the accet at the right time because you just saw the time tumble at the end of it was about being out there at the last Festival moment wasn't it this frustrating but it's part of the game and the conditions are like this you know that com into it especially if it doesn't rain it only rained in the last part of it off Q3 but that's part of the game you've got to be the last person that cross the line you got to positionally have accur G you've got to be there at the right pace at the right time to get those results in and yes it was very very fine margins I mean Alex Alin was what was it 3,000 seconds yeah uh yeah that that is frustrating but it is the same for everybody out there and you've got to get it right but uh it often doesn't go to 100% correctly and you become a little bit of evicted to the conditions though one t didn't quite add it say well McLaren we expected more from then they ultimately qu qualified fifth and sixth sets are slightly different but yeah I think they have a car that's obviously more efficient the DRS is really uh very you know efficient as well so I think Paris could if he stays in the in the in do that tomorrow if he just gets past Charles um he can just you know fight to maybe get that Victory I know he came into this weekend saying he thinks the victory is on the cards it seemed a long more unrealistic with an hour ago now I think it's very much realistic for him you think the big fight there is with materis can they work together from uh well they're going to be starting full and Fa like B work together has happen you this way I think going back a week ago the the team games that they play and I the fact that they actually the ended play ball they would have had a meeting about how they can do that again in a better way I think it can be a factor uh and it if they in this disruptive battle I still think the driver Championship may be in Lum out of Le fando but M are well in truly in the conservative battle between now near the year and this could be a big weekend for them to take a further dent is a rebel lead and how much does it hinder charlot Clair having his teammate down in E I mean obviously you want to have your teammate there so you can maybe you know get that behind hand on the teams around you but ultimately I don't think that's the only thing that's going to hinder him I think Lis put it perfectly in the pen and you know they are not the car with the ultimate Pace uh of course overnight on a Friday you know that there's a lot of simulation work going on back at base and they can make a lot of setup changes that we obiously need don't know and Ne also don't know what those changes will have for them so who knows knows tomorrow when they're on track uh what exactly they can extract from the car that we maybe not have not seen yet but as Friday stood they didn't have the ultimate pay so he's going to be I don't want to say a top and that's all he cares about that's what he wants and when you have Max on top and he feels things are going his way and he feels comfortable to the car he sounds pretty C on on the little look had a big wash yesterday we had some super races put a even bit more rubber down lot of new time I can the problem that red bu have is they only have one new set of the hard compound tires which was expected I use the word expected to be sheby really knows the right tire to have whereas ahead of him the McLarens the fies the Mercedes both have chish brand new set so they might R the fact that they'd r a set on Friday to check them out but but he still has two sets some medians though so he's okay for tires but I'm sure I pick one the C back they would change that a little bit so that's Max's challenge here in p 11 the first te just stay out of trouble in the eaten from his first corner from where he is is uh not much more than 200 M down to the first baking point it's a very short realized he had to stay to the right coming into the pit there I think there's a for that the drivers have to stay to the right that was introduced by uh the race director [Music] overnight Lewis has to go a bit closer to that gravel trap anyway nikab will not be happy in an that cuz I think LS didn't see him at all cuz he was right behind the Red Bull and so he just ran him off the track and and all that's good um what do you know of the track a surface um from these early uh stages one of the drivers been saying and and the fact that we've had that vitim and paint put down how much of a surprise was that to you uh before you came here day right there was not So Much Information coming here uh about the surface itself uh we discovered this yesterday uh on the truck inspection the drivers have reported uh low grip um you seen the left time outs are quite far from normal uh left time or expected lap time so I think uh there needs to be a bit of rubbering in over the next laps grass used to be but I have no idea how that would have happened unless of course niik a spark from underneath the car from the titanium blocks has just caught on a bump or something and sent the Sparks showering into the grass by the side of the track and that's what's ignited it that would be pretty miraculous though would be like I mean there's probably no other explanation but or may yeah and maybe it is be there's a bump there where where cars are putting Sparks out every single lap every single time they go by but that this would be really miraculous could be I mean cuz the wind is pointing that direction and would push them from from where the cars are it would push the Sparks into the corner I me I mean inside of that or very elaborate way to stop 10 prits reporting o cars by the side of the track you we have rated Japan and now a fire at here in shagai once it gets the through Chan up this is not good for any driver or any team who only had 60 minutes to get practice uh practice but actually you uh you know the first thing is is a proper baseland run which I think everybody has done now uh uh about checking the car checking the track uh there seems to be not a lot of grip uh from the surface uh but the Cen noral homework that he tried to do uh in the basine track is turned to Green now again after this more Interruption so I think uh there's not so much disruption to the program to be honest uh that's good um what do you know of the track uh surface um from these early uh stages what of the drivers been saying and and the fact that we've had that bitchman paint put down how much of a surprise was that to you uh before you came here yeah right there was not So Much Information coming here uh about the surface itself uh we discovered this yesterday uh on the truck inspection the drivers have reported uh low grip um you see the left time outs are quite far from normal uh lap time or or expected lap time so I think uh there needs to be a bit of rubbering in over the next laps and then they would be interesting in qualifying to see uh the track Improvement and the driver improvement so uh yeah him to look for do you yeah absolutely you worry a bit mik that we we'll have a racing line but lots of grit and and then offline it it won't get the chance to grip in a bit and that might make overtaking a bit more tricky for the races yeah I understand the concern uh but on the other hand the overtaking is normally on the some the main Straits so uh where the DRS is so uh I think uh through the corners it's probably true but it is also the same for for tired for Mercedes who stays 20th and slowest so far with a 141 out one and his best tie at Mercedes putting their drivers on the the hard Tire to start this session others like Ferrari going on the soft few on the mediums as well real mixture of of tires out on this track car real mixture of tires and strategies I mean Mercedes is probably the most easy to understand an obvious one they've started with the high tire and high fuel just to get their race balance uh sorted and then they will go for some qualifying practice at the end of at the end of the session where whereas the others are already doing whole mix of things yes Sprint qualify later today so that we use medium Tire before the soft tire the first two parts of spread qualifying is medium then we have soft for uh for the final top 10 on that one so you can understand some of the medium Tire Runners out there to get a feel if they're on low fuel at course mean that we don't know what the fuel levels are uh currently what we do know is that there seems to be at low grip which is not a surprise cuz it is the first practice session and the track uh will be nice and fresh especially after the raid that we had the course ni a spark from underneath the car from the titanium blocks as just caught on a bump or something and sent the Sparks showering into the grass by other side of the track and that's what's ignited it that would be pretty miraculous though would it but I mean there's probably no other explanation but or may yeah maybe it is be there's a bump there where where cars are putting Sparks out every single left every single time to go by but that this would be really miraculous could be I mean cuz the wind is pointing that direction and they would push them from from where the cars are it would push the Sparks into the corter I me I mean it's of that are a very elaborate way to stop Ted krabit reporting on cars by the side of the track you know we have raid Japan and now a fire at here in shag High wants a y forer career Channel this is not good for any driver or any team who only had 60 minutes to get practice uh in time in time for the uh for the uh Sprint qualifying later and now got even less time at Karen I'll come to you in a moment Mike CS with us on the pit wall at Aston Martin at first time he's joined us and Mike we're really really grateful that you given some time to Baseline track is turned to Green now again after this more Interruption so I think uh there's not so much disruption to the program to be honest uh that's goes um what do you know of the track uh surface um from these early uh stages one of the drivers been saying and and the fact that we've had that bitman paint put down how much of a surprise was that to you uh before you came [Music] here yeah right there was not So Much Information coming here uh about the surface itself uh we discovered this yesterday uh on the truck inspection the drivers have reported uh low grip um you seen the left times out are quite far from normal uh left time or or expected left times so I think uh there needs to be a bit of rubbering in over the next laps and then they will be interesting in qualifying to see uh the track Improvement and the driver improvement over yeah something to look for do you yeah absolutely you worry a bit Mike that we we'll have a racing line with lots of grip and and then offline it it won't get the chance to grip in a bit and that might make overtaking a bit more tricky for the races B yeah I understand the con uh but on the other hand we be taking is normally on the slowest so far with a 141 one as his best tie at Mercedes putting their drivers on the the hard Tire to start this session H others like Ferrari going on the soft few on the mediums as well real mixture of of tires out on this track currently real mixture of tires and strategies I mean Mercedes is probably the most easy to understand an obvious one they've started with the high tire and high trying to get temperature into his tires let's make St and P who's uh not on a who is on a lap I should say and then it all gets a little bit scruffy there when ni hulkenberg I think wanted to get past as well M that was not very friendly mik hogo will not be happy with that and now he's locked up what did he do Le is that much a bits and and at the last minute realized he have to stay to the right coming into the pits there I think there's a Bard that the drivers have to stay to the right that was introduced by uh the race director overnight Le has to go a bit closer to that gravel trap anyway nikab will not be happy in an that cuz I think LS didn't see him at all cuz he was right behind the Red Bull and so he just ran him off the track and leis is done a drive- through into the pitch there which makes me think that that wasn't a br entrance into the PS either for leis havon yeah that's what I said that it looked like a lock up into the corner there and I'm not sure never after this more Interruption so I think uh there's not so much disrupture to the program to be honest uh that's goodes um what do you know of the track H surface um from these early uh stages what of the driv has been saying and and the fact that we've had that bitchman paint put down how much of a surprise was that to you uh before you came here yeah right there was not So Much Information coming here uh about the surface itself uh we discovered this yesterday uh on the truck inspection the drivers have reported uh low grip um you seen the left time outs are quite far from normal uh lap time or or expected lap time so I think uh there needs to be a bit of rubbering in over the next laps and then they would be interesting in qualifying to see uh the track Improvement and the driver improvement so uh yeah something to look for do you yeah absolutely do you worry a bit Mike that we we'll have a racing line with lots of grit and and then offline it won't get the chance to grip in a bit and that might make overtaking a bit more tricky for the races yeah I understand the concern uh but on the other hand the overtaking is normally on the some the main straights so uh where the DRS is so I think uh through the corners it's probably true but it is also the same for for other circuits that the r line is the most poy one so uh yeah with overtaking mainly on the straights I think uh lewi has to go a bit closer to that gravel trap anyway Nik will not be having an act up cuz I think LS didn't see him at all cuz he was right behind the Red Bull and so I just run him off the track um and leis is done a drive- through into the pits there which makes me think that that wasn't a plan entrance into the pits either for Le hon yeah that's what I said that it looked like a lock up into the corner there and I'm not sure looking enough so he's he's already held up yeah yeah he lock up oh there's a McLaren in the way and also oh whole mess going on there wow for sure Fair buff you see I was right I said it looked very weird and it was the lock up and it walk V Asbury as the well pointed out by PLO on that one I mean Ser karum we've only been away for 5 years and leis Hamilton one on my heroes one of whom was Fernando Alonzo can't quite believe I'm now sat next to him and I'll be on the grid in my home race with him on Sunday and uh andando alono here for another couple of years as well which I'm sure will please as M that madet the sportive director Andy Stevenson and signed a contract to remain with the team and then hinted yesterday that it will probably be his last contract in Formula 1 but he sign be 45 uh 4 45 by the end of it yeah but um he did say probably yeah I didn't say definitely so he left the door open to continues to the 50s to 6 Yi M who said definitely was you and you've stuck to it you've never wanted to come back and you found it very easy to to give up this racing habit I think Fernando Alonzo would find it less easy no no I was never easy I didn't find it easy either but uh yeah certainly Fernando looks like he's still very much enjoying um the racing and the lifestyle so good for him and I'm I'm it's amazing you know at his age I Fitness and and you know just level professionalism and Fernando when he arrived 2001 you know he been training hard for 20 old years so really yeah
