TOMORROW. BUT NOW HERE'S JEFF AND LIZ WITH 0.6 NEWS AT 5 A SMALL PLANE GOES DOWN IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER. WE HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS ALREADY JUST A COUPLE HOURS AFTER THIS CRASH HAPPENED, KOIN 6 NEWS AT 5 STARTS NOW. >> THIS IS A KOIN 6 NEWS. >> AND OUR BREAKING NEWS AT 5, A PIO ALIVE AFTER CRASH LANDING IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 3. THIS AFTERNOON. CREWS NOW WORKING TO REACH THE PLAINS SOMEWHERE BELOW THE SURFACE. WE'VE ALSO LEARNED HE WAS THE ONLY ONE ON BOARD THE PLANE AT THE TIME. AND NOW LET'S GET TO OUR ARIEL IACOBAZZI LIVE ON THE SCENE WITH THE VERY LATEST AERIAL. I UNDERSTAND YOU GOT A CHANCE TO SPEAK WITH THAT PILOT. >> YEAH. HEY, GUYS. SO WE JUST GOT DONE SPEAKING WITH THAT PILOT. HIS NAME IS RICK BETTCHER. HE IS IN HIS 70'S AND HAS BEEN FLYING FOR OVER 25 YEARS. AND HE SAYS THIS IS THE FIRST INSTANCE OF THIS HAPPENING TO HIM. HE'S ACTUALLY GOING RIGHT NOW. YOU SEE HE'S WITH THE BATTALION CHIEF WITH GRESHAM FIRE, ALTHOUGH THE PORT OF PORTLAND IS TAKING THE LEAD ON THIS CASE. NOW WE DID SPEAK TO JUST AS HE WAS GETTING OUT OF THE WATER. HE WAS WET, BUT HE SAYS HE'S SHAKEN UP K HE HAS NO INJURIES. HE'S JUST GOING HOME AND HOPING TO GET GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP TONIGHT. SO HERE'S WHAT HE TOLD US. HE SAID THAT HE HAD TO LAND THE PLANE BECAUSE HE JUST SIMPLY LOST CONTROL OF IT. AND HE SAID IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S NEVER HAPPENED TO HIM BEFORE. >> WELL, I WAS COMING ON A DOWNWIND TO LAND TROUTDALE. AS I WAS TURNING TO A BASE AND PILOTS WILL KNOW WHAT THIS IS THE ENGINE I DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH ALTITUDE TO MAKE IT TO THE RUNWAY. SO I HAD TO PLAN MY LANDING. BECAUSE WHEN YOUR ENGINE QUIT, YOU HAVE TO LIVE. AND THE BEST POSSIBLE SPOT WAS NOT INTO THE WIRES. YOU KNOW, THOSE HIGH POWER WIRES GOING. >> A WATER LANDING SEEMED LIKE BEST >> YES, SIR. IT ALSO TELLS US THAT HIS PLANE IS NOW UNDER 6 FEET OF WATER. SO NOW THE COAST GUARD, WE'RE TOLD, IS GOING TO BE IN CHARGE OF GETTING THAT PLANE OUT. SO IN THE MEANTIME, YOU CAN SEE FIRE CREWS IN WATER RESCUE ARE GETTING THEIR BOATS OUT OF THE WATER. THEY ARE WORKING IT TO GET EVERYBODY OUT AND BACK AT HOME. AND AGAIN, RICK IS ON HIS WAY HOME TO HIS FAMILY. AND AGAIN, HE IS JUST FINE. SO COMING UP IN THE NEXT LITTLE BIT HERE, WE'RE GOING TO HEAD TO SOME MEDIA AVAILABILITY WITH THE PORT OF PORTLAND AND THEY'RE GOING TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING THAT GOES INTO THE CLEANUP PROCESS.
