Cougs take back the Apple Cup & Beavs look ahead to Purdue | Pac-12 After Dark | 2024 Season

that is a huge statement win for Washington State and I see nothing but Blue Skies Ahead good evening and welcome to pack 12 after dark I am Eric Coleman here with Coach Nick aliot it was a a Bittersweet day in the pack today as we had the rivalry games we had the civil war with Oregon State versus Oregon and the apple cup with Washington State versus versus University of Washington now Oregon came out victorious in the Civil War but Washington State came up with a statement win and in Seattle to defeat the Huskies now coach I'll go to you first you watched the Civil War you watched the Oregon Oregon State game what was your impressions of the game can you break it down for us uh and what happened with that with that blowout yeah well after two weeks of all the questions of about Oregon's offensive line and running the ball and all the problems that they've had protection it was I'm telling you it was almost if not near perfect on offense I believe Oregon scored on every possession yes I believe up until the last three minutes when I switched over to wash Washington State there was not one Sack or one tackle for loss by Oregon State I have never seen an offense be as efficient as it was today and and uh I know we're here for Oregon State and Washington State but primarily today uh the Oregon offense uh was just tremendous Dylan Gabriel at one time was 11 for 11 or 10 for 10 at the start of the game and like I said no negativity now I think when we really look at this Oregon finally played like we have been expecting Oregon to play In All Phases and they just had much better athletes than Oregon State because I thought Oregon state was sound on defense I thought Oregon State still ran the ball and was committed to the run and ran it very efficiently uh they just as we have mentioned Eric did not have the passing when they needed it in fact I'm not sure and it's always tough when we don't have those stats afterwards that we get to look at because you're going back and forth I'm not sure Oregon state had a play over 20 yards offensively so the day goes to Oregon in the Civil War uh was a great day for Oregon I think Oregon stay still a very good football team but today was Oregon's day oh that's tough you know it's a that's very tough to you know trim Bray going into his first first Civil War as a head coach uh to get a blowout in in the way that they did uh Dylan Gabriel uh 20 for 24 291 yards in the air with two touchdowns he was very efficient coach I what was what were they doing what was Oregon doing to Oregon State that was making things so simple for Dylan Gabriel well first of all the pocket was about as clean a pocket as a we have seen uh in college football but in particular with the problems and this the stuff we've all kind of targeted with Oregon as problems in protection it was a clean pocket uh it was a simple game in fact Eric what were the final rushing yards to begin with for Oregon how many yards do they rush for well uh Jordan James rushed for 86 yards on the ground two touchdowns uh Dylan Gabriel had 64 uh Rush yards no Whittington had 64 and Tran Holden had 21 on the ground so Oregon had 240 yards on the ground yeah that you know it was a very balanced attack and Oregon was committed to the run early but Dylan you know they ran some boot passes they got them out of the pocket maybe anticipating that protection might not still be there but Dylan Gabriel was spot on I don't believe I mean really 21 what you say 20 for 24 or 21 for 24 whatever that was and I think two of them were dropped so he was spot on the fact that they could run it or pass it at will was really tough for organ I mean I think Oregon kicked one field goal and all the rest were touchdowns very efficient drives wow very l-sided perform as well up in Seattle it was more of a a back and forth matchup between Washington State and and Washington uh Washington State came out on top of the game they winning 24-19 and it came down to the last drive a goal line stopped by Washington State uh but the real star of the show today was was John latier he had another great showing coach he was uh 17 for 34 so he he was efficient when needed through the air D for 245 yards he threw a touchdown and an interception in the fourth quarter but where he really made his head coach was on the ground again he had 62 yards rushing on 16 carries some of them were designed some of them were uh out of necessity scrambling moving around uh but there was a coach bich Coach B uh Bill bich son the defensive coordinator for University of Washington had a pretty good game plan for Washington State they tried to keep uh they tried to keep Materia in the pocket they were they were blitzing from the perimeter trying to make sure that he stayed in the pocket and what happened was mattier uh when when un when the Huskies played Zone tier was able to find the holes in the zone and when the huskys went manto man and they blitzed everyone's back was turned in coverage he tucked the ball and ran for two touchdowns so Mattia really made them pick their poison on how they wanted to stop him uh there was one point at the end of the first half it was third down and 20 from the 25 Washington state was going in about 22 seconds left and Washington State called a quarterback draw you're right a quarterback draw mattier takes it outside and runs for a touchdown untouched so uh he really did a great job today uh the defense for Washington state did an excellent job while University of Washington ran well on the ground they they have a potent ground attack uh they were they were very efficient running the football Jonah Coleman rush for 75 yards on the ground Cameron Davis had 24 uh and Will Rogers Through the air was very effective but he was kind of a bin but don't break defense for Washington State and uh really great to see the Cougars you know after all the stuff that's been going on in the Pack 12 all the all the the distractions that's been going on for the Washington State Cougars to go into Seattle uh they played the Seahawks stadium but they they were able to go into Seattle get rid of all the distractions and come out with the victory uh it was very impressive coach yeah you know what I saw enough young Eric I like saying young Eric because you're young that's a compliment I saw enough to know this that John mattier is the straw that stirs that drink for Washington State I'm very I mean three starts in his career Washington State and he's looked very very good throwing it and running it and his command of the offense and the other two things that stood out is when you trade field goals for touchdowns which is what Wasington state did they were very good in the high red or even in the red to hold washing into field goals which ended up being the difference of the game and then the goal line stand first and goal at the nine I thought Washington State stepped up bowed their neck and uh I'll bet Washington wants that play over on fourth down running an option to the short side of the field no offense but that's what you come up to win the game oh my God but my hat's off to Washington State because I pull I have to admit it's hard for me to pull for Oregon State when they're playing Oregon I gotta be honest but I pull deeply for Washington State and Oregon State and I want nothing for them to have great success so Oregon State losing to Oregon today doesn't hurt my feelings and I'm still pulling for Oregon State I want you to know that but Washington State being Washington never had left for Washington go cou go CS indeed it was man I can't I can't can't tell you how good that felt to watch them celebrate after the game but you know with with the separation of the conference coach and then moving forward for both of these teams Oregon State and Washington State what let's say let's talk about Washington State first what does this do for Washington State in their future in in the Pack 12 uh throughout the season having a statement win against the University of Washington Club absolutely I know where you're going with that you know why are we left out when you beat the team that was in the national championship game last year and you get left out of a league A so-called League you know be in the Pack 12 which we're really happy what's going on there I don't want to get off on a tangent that is a huge statement win for Washington State and I see nothing but blue skies ahead for them really I mean I haven't really studied their schedule ahead but who on that schedule could beat them if they play like they continue to play they have a chance to be a 10- win team now it's early and like I said I haven't seen who they got ahead but they have a chance to make a great statement and today's win against Washington goes a long way well well coach I'll tell you you I have the schedule right here next up is San Jose State okay then they go to they go to boisey state go to Fresno State those are going to be two tough opponents then they play against Hawaii San Diego State Utah state New Mexico Oregon State and finish with Wyoming I mean coach I see I definitely see 10 wins for the cougs in that in that schedule if they can stay healthy and play if they play as well as they did tonight yeah no doubt about it and I never like to put the cart before the horse just like we we have bashed and I've been one of them uh I'm not going to act like I'm I'm not part of it I have bashed organs o line today they look like a top 10 team in the country and Washington State I'm really s surprised I think the thing that surprising me is two things obviously Mater is maturity in the way he handles the offense but more importantly Washington state is playing very stingy defense so uh they look to be a good team and again I want to make sure people know this I'm pull up for Oregon State Oregon state is still a good team today they just look like it was Oregon's day they were outmatched but they're still a very good football team and I like their recipe moving forward well we make sure you guys stay with us uh we're going to go to uh we talked about the silver war we talked about the apple cup and the rest of the the conference now we're going to get into next week's matchups for Oregon state they're playing the Purdue boiler makers in cor valis and for Washington state they're playing in pman against the Santa Jose State Spartans and uh coach what do you think about these matchups uh let's talk about Oregon State first they're playing Purdue who just got beat up by Notre Dame 66-7 gave up 362 yards on the ground this be a good spot for wargan state to get their running game back on track yeah you know uh haven't seen a lot of Purdue yet uh a lot of college football going to seen enough their Purdue is struggling right now and I think it'll be very hard for them if Oregon State I just thought today go if I could digress y Oregon just out talented Oregon State it was just a mismatch that way but I don't think that's going to be the case with Purdue and they're playing at home uh they if they continue to do the recipe of running the ball I don't know if Purdue have quite the skilled athletes in the run of the pass game in quarterback position that Oregon had so they don't we don't play the game on paper and we don't play it by based on the P but I truly believe that Oregon state will have a great bounceback win I expect them to win I expect them to be a 10 plus favorite against Purdue at home next week absolutely coach and you know again I know we don't play it on paper but looking back at that game or Purdue versus Notre Dame uh the quarterback Hudson card you know they mind you they got beat 66 to7 so they were probably in two-minute drill for most of that game he was 11 for 24 for 124 yards in the air and he threw two interceptions with one touchdown so um offensively it doesn't look like Purdue has much going on uh but you know hopefully Oregon state is able to get back on track and and get back to their winning ways uh now for Washington state they're playing the San Jose State and uh is there going to be I hope that there's no layoff for the coug this is a big win a big statement win for Washington State beating the the instate Rivals uh the former big brothers of the state but now I think Washington state is kind of taking that step they're playing with the chip on their shoulder they've got a Swagger about them offensively the defense is flying around and Coach Jake Dicker has got them playing some great football right now they're playing San uh San Jose State at home in hland coach how did you fight the the The Urge my coach Herm Edwards used to say s success does not breed success success breeds complacency how as a coach do you keep your team on track after having such a big win you know the good news is after a win as you know you can coach them really hard and you could really point out the stuff that was bad and guys will really take it because hey we're three and 0 that's good let's keep it going so you got to keep your foot on the pedal number one and and we all talk about it young men need to understand that it's one week one play one practice if every day you practice to the best of your ability that means all of you to the best of your ability then everything else the process should take care of itself now it's easier said they're done but I tell you what San Jose State to me is a scary good football team Washington state is a better football team and to be three and 0 playing at home against s State they those young men and I'm sure coach Dicker will give them the message stay focused be ready to play San State all that other stuff is behind us now we got to just take each and improve and get ready to play San State because you know what you only play one team a week you only have to beat the team that you're playing that week you're not playing anybody else just got to beat the team you're playing that week and the bottom line is and I love saying this all you got to do is suck less than the team you're playing absolutely coach and and when you look at it from from we're both defensive guys so if you're Washington State yeah he just had a great Victory there's a lot to build off of but at the end of the day Giles Jackson the receiver for the University of Washington had eight catches for 162 yards including three explosives against your defense he was the one guy in the Washington offense that you had to stop that you couldn't let get behind your defense yet the Cougars let that happen three times if I'm the defensive coordinator for the cougs I'm Haren on that we can't let this happen again we have to keep the the players in front of us we have to do well there's a lot to still coach up uh for this cougar defense so um I I don't think there's going to be much of a let up when when you talk about
