hey everyone and welcome to the wnba on 2k sports we'll watch the washington mystics in this one as they go up against the chicago sky joined by brian benefittemi and tim schwartz i'm blake suniga and we are so glad you've joined us tonight and it's gonna be the sky off the tip tonight two exceptional teams going at it brian but did these types of games bring out the best in players absolutely blake you always want to win but it's just another thing to win against the best of the best i expect everyone to be on their a plus game tonight so we're in for a treat and the stakes they might not actually be higher but they just feel higher tonight teams take a lot of pride in what they do and i think players on both sides are looking to prove something tonight from deep alley quigley atkins grabs the board clark outside pass to deladon clark outside [Applause] shot clock at six here's mitchell shoots it no good off the back of the rim but he got away with a major lapse there to the middle golsan drops in the layup for two scoring inside it's about a lot of things to me touch is most important and dolson knows how to get the ball in the hoop now here is atkins elena deladon on the wing clark outside the three-pointer no good she may have been surprised to find herself so open maybe that's why she missed pass to dolson quigley here's copper offensive rebound they get a hand on it and stolen by atkins here's the break ahead the basket drops and she gets fouled on the shot one free throw coming up for her took them a while to get going they finally connect in their fourth shot of the game well guys i really admire the patience alicia clarke has shown in her wnba career a second round pick in the 2010 draft clark didn't land on a wnba roster until 2012 but it all paid off for her in 2018 when she helped the seattle storm win the wnba championship [Applause] and with everything clark has been through in this league tim where have you seen the most growth in her game well her outside shooting has definitely improved over the years blake she's also become one of the best defenders in the entire league earning wnba all defensive second team honors in 2019 but a first team nod might be coming sooner rather than later now here's vandersloot back to parker from deep three-point range you know sometimes just because you can make it from way out there it doesn't mean you should try kind of hypocritical coming from you tim i mean it wasn't that far out anyways she could work for a better shot than that [Applause] vander sloot outside pass to copper to the paint here's golsan it's good for her second make two for three so far she did so well to lead her teammate right to the ideal spot that's the kind of play-making coaches like to see now here's mitchell [Applause] first quarter play and we're about three minutes in inside here's misamon that shot off the mark the sky go the other way with it here's copper goes back up parker val called that time on the way up and that'll give her two chances at the free-throw line a veteran hooper parker's been in the game for over a decade it's just been an incredible career shooting two [Applause] that one's off well after winning two national championships in college i think candace parker was ready to win at the next level parker won back-to-back titles for the state of tennessee before becoming the first overall pick in the 2008 wnba draft and upon entering the league parker wasted no time getting things done she hits the second from the line and looking at parker's collegiate basketball success brian how did she translate her winning ways to the pros well i'd say it's a mindset blake because parker wants to win wherever she goes she stayed true to herself and improved her game with each passing season now it took her a little while but she finally won it all in 2016 when the sparks took down the fever in five games her shooting percentage is through the roof right now what a great start to this game pass to parker copper [Applause] now here's vandersloot [Applause] throws it up high and they get in the way it looks like they were going for the alley-oop not to be there's the three park can't hit i thought that was gonna drop it looked good from here look good here too i'm as shocked as you alley quigley drives in [Applause] the mystics leading here's atkins that's short off the rim here's chicago now from deep alley quigley sinks the triple when a shooter like quickly gets one off the pass it allows him to feel comfortable increasing the probability of a mate fast to me simon clark from downtown it's rebounded by courtney vander sloot and here we go the sky fast break copper no good you see defenders afraid to get in her way a lot of times when she's on her way to the bucket but not that time and it's good two points the savvy of mitchell leading to the open hoop for her team what a facilitator now here's vandersloot still getting warmed up offensively no buckets yet in the game for her [Applause] pass to dolson shoots over misamon and it's dolson missing well that's just not a sight you see very often because she has a great feel for that jump shot especially when she's open mitchell with it vandersloot defending and misamon gets it to go a professor in physicality misuman will always give you her best time out i'm called here the sky decide to talk it over while teammate elena deladon deservedly got all the love including the 2019 mvp award with washington emma mesa man had equally as good of a shooting year deladon became the first wnba player to ever have a qualified 50 40 90 season misa man also went 50 from the field 40 from three point range and over 90 at the free throw line [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here's quigley it's good it's her second basket she's shooting two for four with me semen that incredible shooting season fell just short of official qualification yeah emma was just a few threes a few free throw temps away from joining deladon as a qualified 50 40 90 player but remember the two shooting stars led the way in 2019 to the wnba title for the mystics the shot by mitchell no good they didn't give her any breathing room to take that shot and that's exactly what they should be doing [Applause] back to quigley [Applause] goes up from the top of the key nissan pulls it in well you have to like they're working the boards here in the first yeah coming out of the gates with great energy kind of like they got shot out of a cannon they're really setting the tone boom and looking back at tina charles's college career what a run she had alongside then teammate maya moore charles helped connecticut win two undefeated national championships in back-to-back seasons that must have helped charles become the first overall pick in the 2010 wnba draft [Applause] the first free throw is good and tim after a spectacular college basketball career tina charles contributed to the pros immediately oh you could say that blake in 2010 tina charles rookie of the year in 2011 tina charles an all-star and by 2012 she was the league mvp not that many players in wnba history have climbed the ranks that fast chicago trailing here [Applause] outside williams the shields and again it's chicago with a three well you love to see that offensive mindset from the shields and really she's showing that she is not afraid to extend her range now here's cloud she hasn't scored yet that i'm sure will change heinz allen good down there in the low post is where you want to create a lot of your offense and so it's chicago with it outside quigly pass to stevens quigley goes to the reverse layup and drops it in a good decision maker with a strong feel for the game stevens can spot open teammates whenever she's out on the court now here's mitchell plowed inside to the inside here's charles she can't get that one some solid defense from ruthie hebert [Applause] here's stevens it's good and the assist that time from diamond to shield and to feed courtesy at the shields you know she's really known as a scorer but diamond is also solid at moving the basketball now here is charles pass to heinz allen al mitchell the three it's hauled in by williams she's going to play her way right onto the bench if she continues to shoot the ball like she has this quarter [Applause] now hebert [Applause] and a foul on the shot she'll go to the stripe for two that's on natasha cloud that's her first trip to the line take a break take a break two shots and the first one at the line is good [Applause] and she makes both free throws mitchell with it looking for her first basket still in this one [Applause] to the wing right side deflected charles goes up and lays it in nice and easy it's hard to knock charles off her center of gravity especially when she's focused on scoring i'm called here the sky decide to talk it over ladies and gentlemen [Applause] [Applause] so [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] ah on defense the mystics they trail by one right here outside quigley down to five on the shot clock fires from deep unable to get that one to go they've come out with a take no prisoners approach on the glass today i love to see that kind of effort and it's already gotten them a plus five margin in the rebound cone and the shot counts she's fouled that's a chance for a three-point play and that sends tina charles to the free-throw line that's on gabby williams [Applause] rookie of the year perennial all-star league mvp there's few things in this league tina charles hasn't accomplished now here's williams wyatt so far offensively searching for her first points of the game yeah she's not necessarily a strong interior presence but she's gotta finish those chances when she has them mitchell outside to the right side finds alan good [Applause] and that concludes the first quarter of play the mystics on top leading by four and the second quarter is on the way when we return now the second quarter getting ready to start up and for the mystics guys what jumps out to you stat wise some great defense on their part so far in this one they've really worked well as a unit to help on drives and rotations the mystics leading [Applause] [Music] mitchell outside [Applause] outside sanders [Applause] one of the intriguing stories of this relatively young season is the early emergence of a couple rookies we've reached the point as a league where if you're a first round pick you expect to have an immediate impact in joining your squad remember for the college players coming into the league they had just finished their season so they're in game shape physically and mentally right off the bat but you need to be careful with those college players they have been playing non-stop since early november so while they're excelling early let's see what they look like come playoff time now here is hebert pass to williams four on the shot clock stevens that's good and that'll tie this game up a 6-6 forward with just straight-up versatility stevens has been a noteworthy wnba prospect for a while time called here the mystics decide to talk it over [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Applause] the mystics making a switch here here's deladon pass to cloud clark and that comes off the assist by natasha cloud moves well without the ball clark's pretty good at losing her defender and making them pay starting her career in the nation's capital as well as winning a title there point guard natasha cloud sees herself as more than a hooper whether it's speaking on panels about activism holding basketball camps for local kids or speaking to students cloud is active in her community you know it's just terrific positioning on her part to get the rebound to you know she might not have the size or the height but she's got plenty of smarts now here's the shields he has five it drops for her third basket she's only missed one shot and for cloud running the show for the 2019 champion mystics was a career highlight but she's hoping that's not all people remember her for yeah after winning that title cloud told reporters quote if all i do is bring a championship to dc at the end of my career then i've failed for me my success is what am i doing for the people and kids in my community at the end of the day basketball is just a game and quote what a great message now here's deladon [Applause] now cloud back to deladon atkins and they call an illegal screen here very close call there on the illegal screen and i'd go along with it you know to me it didn't really look like her feet were set chicago trailing here [Applause] vander sloot outside [Applause] score the basket nice shot after missing her first attempt so much improvement in terms of passing the ball for dalton she came into the league at about an assist per game and she has tripled that rate now here is atkins no scoring yet from her but that's likely to change well she rushed that one the d was out of position but she couldn't make him pay here's vandersloot outside to shields vander sloot outside six on the shot clock here's golsan and clark pulls it down here's the mystics with the ball they trail by one the mystics again can't hit [Applause] right wing copper defended by atkins back to vandersloot outside parker copper from past the arc that one no good it can be so deflating to miss a wide open look like that clark outside past the cloud [Applause] and here is misuman covered by the shields basket counts well to average almost five assists a game you have to find open players cloud is phenomenal at that vander sloot outside golsan she's covered by cloud that's good for her third bucket now three for six from the field that's the tenth straight point they've given up in the paint it doesn't matter how good their perimeter defense is if they keep allowing easy looks inside now here's clark she's got nine poked away [Applause] here's the shields and she uses the glass on the layup not much resistance on the inside that's their fifth consecutive make in the paint those looks they're allowing are almost automatic in fact i'll just say they are automatic now here is atkins she's been patient so far nothing yet on the scoreboard four on the clock puts it up from 15 misses off the right iron chicago in the lead diamond to shields from outside it's rebounded by elena deladon [Applause] down low and so she earns a trip to the line officials saw the contact and she'll shoot two stephanie olson picks one up a consistent scoring threat from the guard position i think it's atkins's style and finesse that always keeps defenders guessing [Applause] and the first one falls for her and guys ariel atkins put herself on the map with her first two wnba seasons she averaged double-digit points per game and earned all defensive second team honors in both seasons she also won the 2019 wnba championship in year two scoring 21 points in game one of the finals and so she makes both from the line and ariel atkins has certainly had a nice start to her wnba career tim but where do you see her game going from here well she's already a good scorer but i want to see her add even more moves become an elite scorer defensively obviously she's on the right track i see her making it an all defensive team pretty soon oh and by the way that wnba title she won in 2019 i doubt that'll be your last championship now here's mitchell she hasn't yet put up any points in this one ariel atkins on the wing back to mitchell out to the wing here's me simon the mystics again can't hit fast break here they come here's the shields kept alive golsan's shot's good another reason you want dalton on your team she can turn a miss basket into points tremendous effort on the boards now here's mitchell pass to mesaman to the middle [Applause] deladon back to me simon mitchell vander sloot defending pulls up from the top of the key and another miss by washington this game has been very close in a lot of areas but rebounding is one thing that's gone in their favor yeah effort and determination on the glass they really can compensate for a lot of deficiencies dolson with it he's against misamon golson's shots good nicely done they continue to attack inside that's 10 points in a row from the paint it's now become here it comes and see if you can stop it now here's mitchell pass to atkins here's deladon and that one is good with the extra effort on the glass cleaning uh elena deladon is a smooth scorer who isn't afraid of some dirty work i'm called here the sky decide to talk it over well they want to tinker with the game plan a little bit and now is the time to do it yeah there was clearly some things going on out there that the coaching staff just wasn't a fan of [Applause] [Applause] so it's both teams making substitutions here [Applause] outside hebert quigley shot clock at five it's in bucket number four for her shooting at a four for nine clip the mid-range j you don't see it a ton with all these new school basketball metrics but quickly shows it still has great value in the game now here's miesman she has six and a foul called on the shot got her on the way up that time so she'll shoot two [Applause] this is her first trip to the free-throw line tonight [Applause] and she knocks down the first one getting to the line and hitting your free throws it's a good way to get back into a game it stops the clock it extends the game and they're doing that they've been perfect from the line so far here in the second quarter and good on the second makes both i'll go with it three-point lead [Applause] sander salute outside that kick out to quigley [Applause] steps back and shoots here's stevens and good work on the boards and they pick up the second chance points their prowess inside has just been tremendous guys it's been no contest on the low block and really brian until the defense puts up at least some resistance they ought to just keep pounding them down low now here's me six points for her a capable distributor atkins is able to see the big picture within the game [Applause] now here's vandersloot pass to quigley [Applause] and that one goes long you know it might be a poor shooting performance for her but luckily her teammates have picked up the slack mitchell outside [Applause] lets it go from deep stevens grabs the board one second separating the shot clock and the game clock inside well timed pass and it goes straight to the bucket for the layup another bucket in the paint that's just something they have not been able to stop today and if they want to win this game they got to figure out how to stop it you know brian i think it's time to switch things up on d what they've got going on right now is not getting it done shots good by sanders you know maybe the best offensive rebounder in the entire league latoya sanders knows what to do after she gets the board fill it up and the first half comes to a conclusion in a game that has been very close so far sky out in front they lead by three and we'll be back right after halftime to get the third quarter underway foreign [Applause] well both sides have assessed what they need to do over the break and we'll see if one can pull away in the third yeah look at dolson what a contribution it's amazing to watch she spoils us with her performances gaming game out and so far another big scoring night for her and often times when she puts up that many points in the first half she follows it up with an even better second half so we'll see if that happens again here the start of the second half getting underway both teams battling hard through the first two quarters clark outside mitchell the shot's good on the assist by elena deladon look elite scorers like della don understand they won't be the one scoring the ball every time nice job of keeping her teammates involved now here's vandersloot quigley offended by atkins and that's going to be over and back wasn't watching for the line that time here's mitchell pass to clark lisaman it's ariel atkins with the drive they now take the lead with the steadfast and fiery offensive identity atkins is able to put her head down and attack here's copper wyatt so far offensively searching for her first points of the game vandersloot with it to the inside and stolen by mitchell and pushing it up here's washington [Applause] shot's good by clark nothing but money for him to start the half they're three for three this guy trail vander sloot outside up top quigley parker deladon covering one deep alley quigley he can't hit that time and it's the mystics taking it the other way [Applause] clark outside [Applause] yellowdawn outside misses the three this offense is first miss after three straight makes to start the second half they get it back and it's gonna be two free throws drew contact on the shot inside the paint is where candice parker thrives she's got size and skill when i think of the best rookie season in wnba history i immediately think of candice parker she became the first player in league history to win both rookie of the year and league mvp in the same season [Applause] and the first one drops and tim when you think about parker's historic rookie season what other accomplishments stand out for you well i mean you can go on and on blake what candace parker has done in this league how about 2013 when she got her first all-star game mvp 23 points 11 rebounds or even 2016 when parker helped the sparks win the wnba title and was named finals mvp now here's mitchell deladon outside pass to atkins misamon [Applause] and even after two offensive rebounds they just can't take the lid off [Applause] second half of play with just under two and a half minutes pass stolson's shots good she's created some good opportunities for herself and made the most of them and the mystics call time here i think my favorite part of courtney vander sloot's game is her ability to facilitate she's led the league and assist multiple times and she's always looking for the open teammate she makes passes that other players simply can't [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh it's washington now it's a one point [Applause] game clark outside pass to mitchell six to shoot to the paint deladon good work there as it goes some defensive breakdowns happening now their last four buckets allowed have come from very close range and giving up these high percentage shot attempts it's not going to get it done they need to figure it out up top clark 11 points in the game [Applause] left side charles pass to clark mitchell vander sloot defending quickly comes with the double team a nice shot by cloud you know the execution it hasn't been there defensively in the second half now play after play they look just a step slow now here's vandersloot here's quigley great d that time from natasha cloud the mystics leading pass to mitchell jay doubler with golson loud inside [Applause] doesn't go for her good work defensively by stephanie dolson courtney vander sloot for three and the rebound goes to the mystics and offensively one for five a slow start here in the second half here's mitchell and she banks in the layout when it comes to cutting to the hoop mitchell is so good it's a combination of the burst and the smarts and they've been struggling here offensively bit of a dry spell for sure now a time out called by chicago yeah the coaches they saw their team giving up a lot of points and wanted to get a break before it got out of hand and that's a big part of a coach's job making sure you keep your players in the best position possible at all times that's a great allen guarded by quigley heinz allen good this has been a great job of getting into the middle of that defense and scoring from the paint you know really that's why they're on this run you get that that close to the hoop and it's a lot easier to drop shots in a nice shot by the shields well perhaps the best passing big we've ever seen in the wnba parker has incredible court vision and anticipation pass to heinz allen now here's charles guarded by dolson [Applause] and here's clark it's good and with that basket she is now five for nine three consecutive field goals have come right at the rim the defense better start buckling down they're getting exposed and punished down low now here's williams she's been patient so far nothing yet on the scoreboard it's a deflection but they recover it clock at four and d valley quigley it's rebounded by elena deladon well it's not a bad look for her on that shot but it just doesn't seem to be her night and look everyone has those pass to heinz allen from the ark the rebound by the sky yeah the great shooters they know when they've got enough opening to go for the three i didn't think it was a bad choice there yeah not very good defensive coverage that time the d got lucky now here's mitchell now clark covered by the shields the bucket is good and she'll have a chance for one more it's on leilani mitchell obviously the shields is an unreal athlete but what makes her an all-star level player the desire we just saw [Applause] third pick in the 2018 wnba draft the shields went on to have a terrific rookie campaign now here's mitchell [Applause] lays it up and banks it in you know offensively they seem to have really turned a corner yeah just a much better half since they changed baskets and they're looking strong here's hebert to williams stevens back to williams she's a gritty player guys even giving away some inches she can still win the rebound battles heinz allen good you know some players you can give that shot to but let me be clear she is not one of them terrible job by the defense now here's williams still getting warmed up offensively no buckets yet in the game for her [Applause] there's the lob to the hoop trying to go for an alley-oop but excellent defense and anticipation there to stop it and she makes that one of their last six baskets five have come on the interior this is smash mouth basketball guys yeah they're really imposing their will offensively and getting exactly the kind of looks they want now here's quigley he's got nine people forget deladon is one of the best shot blockers in the league she helps prevent buckets too [Applause] pass to charles sanders she's guarded by stevens mitchell with it the three here's deladon and they pick up two the size of deladon is a lot for a defense especially when she's looking to scoring close [Applause] outside quigly here's the floater here's stevens and she lays it straight in that's some tenacity inside battling for the second chance points i'm called here the mystics decide to talk it over ladies and gentlemen dance team [Applause] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] and the mystics making a change here on defense chicago [Applause] and here is mitchell she has six right side charles pass to atkins block at six lets the three fly she can't get that one to fall the sky go the other way with it wiggly with it and stolen by ariel atkins now charles azaree stevens with some nice d [Applause] williams with it he hasn't scored yet that i'm sure will change here's the shields and fouls called as she misses and she's gonna shoot two free throws that one on me well a huge part of the shields game it's drawing contact earning trips to the line normally she's one of the players that's top 10 in the league in free throw attempts [Applause] the first one falls a perfect half at the free throw line for them that'll help their comeback effort for sure yeah those free throws are helping them keep contact [Applause] and that one falls so she hits both of them the mystics with the lead mitchell outside pass to heinz allen three-pointer doesn't get it to drop for and we've reached the end of the third the mystics on her teammates when they're wide open outside atkins charles over hebert drops in the short one that's where you like your shots to come from the sky trail pass to vandersloot hebert now copper left side stevens five on the clock good for them five shots he remains perfect that's a great example of stevens comfortability and focus around the basket so effective down there washington calls timeout we've gone about one and a half minutes into this fourth quarter vander sloot outside golsan with it over mitchell and it's dolson missing [Applause] here's clark they get it again and it's atkins missing she hasn't really done much on the offensive end but she has worked within the team to help them get the lead vander sloot right side passed it to shields six to shoot takes the 13-footer not gonna go that time excellent d there from ariel atkins mitchell with it vandersloot defending and the ball out of play the sky will happen [Applause] over two and a half minutes in the books here in the fourth pass to copper six on the shot clock vander sloot outside stolen by tina charles atkins the shot's good on the assist by tina charles they're passing the ball very crisply right now their last three buckets have come by way of an assist jander salute outside pass to copper over atkins and misses it off the right side of the rim she's having all sorts of problems with her shots yeah the words ice and cold come to mind with the way she's shooting the ball now here's the shield and the shot goes down you know she's pretty comfortable inside vander sloot has practiced scoring near the rim so much and she's as good as any point guard in the league at scoring inside to the inside and misamon gets it to go offensively she can be the engine that drives them at any given moment fast to parker the shields now here's vandersloop just five on the clock here's golsan shot number 12 goes in he's made seven of those 12 now well from this far out it's easy money for dolson a fantastic shooter for a five she can even extend it out to three-point range now here is charles misamon guarded by dolson and she was fouled on the way up two free throws for her back in 2019 while teammate elena deladon won the regular season mvp for washington emma misamon also quietly went to 50 40 90 shooting during that regular season with deladon battling a back injury in the postseason misumi took it to another level shooting two [Applause] and she makes the first and for misamon during the 2019 playoffs she increased her scoring average to nearly 20 points per game and how about her performance in the wnba finals emma was named mvp and the 6-4 belgian was the first reserve to take home the award shooting over 50 from deep misa men played a huge role in the mystics winning their first wnba title she's perfect from the line this time oh man talk about incredible focus vista man's one of the best free throw shooters for her position [Music] vander sloot outside to the middle and the bucket counts and she's on her way to the line to try to make it a three-point play [Applause] 2017 was a breakout year for stephanie dolson she shot 56 from the field 44 from three-point land and averaged almost 15 per game making her second all-star team now here is atkins they doubler with golsan inside pass to mesaman clark over dolson they get the rebound she muscles it in through the contact they call the foul and she's on her way to the line good job here in the second half they're doing a great job of pounding it [Applause] the lane inside the lane one shot [Applause] [Applause] to the paint parker and she drops in the layup off glass the experience of parker it makes her tough near the hoop she just figures out ways to score deladon outside lisaman guarded by dolson down low [Applause] clark outside no good there some solid defense from diamond to shields her shooting numbers slipping this quarter [Applause] vander sloot outside the shields that kick out to quigly from outside the arc it's good and the assist that time from diamond to shields and she had one in the first as well and look we all know that she can be dangerous from downtown so the defense can't forget about her and there's a whistle that goes on diamond to shields that is her first foul of the game [Applause] mitchell outside [Applause] outside atkins pass to me someone shot clock at six [Applause] here's mitchell on both ends vandersloot works hard to make an impact she gives her all to shut the shooter down she's been their best rebounder today no doubt well the numbers back that up too i mean she brought her lunch pail with her today and she has gone to work now here's vandersloot outside to shields pass to quigley over mitchell and out of bounds the mystics will take it where was she going with that pass i have no clue that that's awful that's just giving it away the mystics leading nice defense by courtney vandersleuth quigley defended by atkins parker laid in with a nice touch off the glass worth the price of admission parker's mental toughness carries her to success in big moments washington calls timeout coach saw that the players were getting a little run down out there
