everyone welcome to the wnba on 2k sports and in our match-up tonight we'll see the atlanta dream going up against the minnesota lynx joined by brian banafitemi and tim swartz i'm blake suniga and we are so glad you've joined us tonight despite being in opposite conferences this is a heated matchup how fired up will these players be tonight well they face each other just twice per year so there is extra intensity in this one it might be a regular season game on the schedule but it has playoffs feel the fans are really into it as well we are all hoping for another intense and close contest got accordingly well odyssey sims made it to her first wnba finals in 2017. unfortunately for her the sparks unfortunately uh fell short of their ultimate goal she battled to the very end with her team to set it up and despite not winning the championship in 2017 what do you think sims may have learned from losing in the finals well i think it gives you a healthy perspective blake you realize just how tough it is to win it all you have to reflect on the good and the bad though and continue to turn your weaknesses into strengths it probably motivated her to work even harder because she doesn't to put on a show offensively in each of carter's three years in college she averaged over 20 points per game that includes scoring 46 in a game as a freshman [Applause] and with carter she's known for how dynamic she is with the ball well to score like she did against the best competition in such a tough league in college at just five seven carter's quicks are fantastic welcome to atlanta by uh poc real title contenders just might be right absolutely i mean there is no substitute for actually playing the games we talked during the offseason about where we think teams rank who we think would win it all but the time for projections have passed now we are starting to see who is for real this is when you can survey the standings look around the league and before the stretch run see who really has a shot to win it all but remember if you're a top team everyone and i mean everyone is thinking about ways to beat you [Music] so [Music] [Applause] collier outside elizabeth williams with the block the combination of effort height nastiness it's a recipe for elite shot blocking williams she has all three of those minnesota trailing outside powers [Applause] to the inside vowels so she gets the whistle contact on the way up two shots next over her first decade in the league sylvia fowles has always been a force named to three wnba all-star games she's also averaged a double double four times over a season but in 2017 fouls took her game to another level winning her first mvp award shooting two and she makes the first for fouls when you get into the advanced numbers she was out of this world yeah not only did she lead the league in defensive rating she was also second in offensive rating fouls's efficiency numbers were off the charts as well best in the league in per and effective shooting remember in 2017 she also won finals mvp what a year and that's good as she hits both shots you know what they say hard work pays off and fouls is a living example of that she we'll be back in a moment and off we go a close game now entering the second quarter and from what we've seen from the lynx what's your take so far they've made the most of their fast break chances here in the early going yeah tire shoelaces because they can run and they've done a good job filling the lanes in transition here's williams [Applause] strickland outside the kickout to hayes shot pounding the defense and creating high percentage looks from close range and even under pressure in tight they've maintained their concentration and converted their opportunities next well despite being the eighth overall pick back in the 2016 wnba draft courtney williams was actually traded during her rookie year williams played just six games with the mercury before she was sent to play for the connecticut son but really it wasn't the worst thing for her career she found a role with connecticut and made the finals with them in 2019. [Applause] the first free throw is good and brian with courtney williams getting traded in her first wnba season how do you think that helped her grow as an overall player i'm sure it wasn't easy for her blake but at least she learned the business side of basketball early some players don't get traded until later in their careers and then they just don't really know how to handle it but i'm proud of the way williams took it in stride and refused to let it stop her career ascension well guys for her size courtney williams is an outstanding rebounder she's listening to 5'8 but she seems to play a lot bigger than that i'm just so impressed with her grit and toughness on the boards now here's more pastor brown here's dantas and there's the whistle on the shot took the foul shot misses and first one and tim what are the biggest advantages to having a relentless rebounder like williams on your team it starts with inspiration blake because when you see your guard yeah guard rebounding the way williams does it pushes everyone else to match her intensity and rebounding has always been a team effort so her coaches have to appreciate her willingness to do the dirty work atlanta trailing carter one of the league's best kept secrets for years i mean seriously hayes has a more developed game than many realize now here's brown still getting warmed up offensively no buckets yet in the game for her [Applause] here's hayes and a foul on the shot she'll go to the stripe for two a second round pick back in 2012 since entering the league out of connecticut tiffany hayes has been one of the most reliable players in this league in each of her first seven seasons in the wnba hayes saw her scoring increase it culminated in 2018 when hayes averaged over 17 points per game and was named to the all wnba first team and the first one at the line is good and with hayes her coaches and teammates don't just love her for her scoring there's a lot more to love yeah her toughness certainly garners respect from her teammates in 2019 hayes played through an ankle injury for a lot of the season and beyond the offensive numbers hayes is known for her active defense on the perimeter and she makes both free throws teammates with maya moore at connecticut and angel mccoy in the pros sometimes tiffany hayes has been overlooked in her basketball career but given the chance to shine hayes has stepped up time after time in atlanta during those two seasons of makatri mist 2017 and 2019 he's stepped up big time [Applause] and almost four minutes gone in the second quarter play [Applause] outside hayes pass to billings off to a good start as she hits her first shot attempt and with hayes she has stepped into the spotlight and really shown she can be a star in this league that aforementioned season with the dream in 2017 hayes took over scoring duties all she did was set a new career high in points and make her first all-star game an athletic guard hayes can also dish it putting up solid assist totals over her career now here is mcbride he hasn't scored yet that i'm sure will change strickland outside outside parker pass to carter inside here's hayes she nails it and we're tied up smart pass by carter i mean kennedy draws so much attention it allows teammates to get open and find spaces [Applause] mcbride outside it's maya moore on the wing [Applause] and the rebound paying off as they pick up two on the second chance bucket right there now that is how you set the tone on offense more is all effort all the time now here is hayes nine points in the game some solid defense from caleb mcbride down low dantas yes and it's now call you're picking up the assist don't underestimate collier's ability as a distributor she'll make passes that make you say wow with being a top pick i think parker's handled it well and is progressing nicely in her wnba career obviously they're evenly matched teams on the interior the rebound numbers are very even yeah impressive effort from both teams on the glass now here's williams number three renee montgomery yeah she read how that shot was going to come off the rim perfectly and that can make up for any height disadvantage and here's dangerfield she hasn't yet put up any points in this one alcohol that time on the way up and that'll give her two chances at the free-throw loss a solid all-around player why you win with players like tiffany hayes because she's selfless and really just makes her teammates better so the whistle blows on the shot two free throws for the contact there it's on cheyenne decent edge in rebounds and that hard work on the boards needs to continue that could be what swings this game and well maya moore is someone that has found early success in this league she won two championships during her first three wnba seasons also during that run won an mvp award now here's carter nine points in the game her shooting numbers slipping this quarter here's collier and easy two points on the layup these kinds of finishes will energize collier's entire team that's the power of fearless basketball guys and despite winning a lot up front brian maya moore has kept up her success in the wnba no doubt about it blake she did win two early titles in 2011 and 2013 but she also won another two titles in 2015 and 2017. her consistency has really set her apart from the rest of the
