hi everyone welcome to the wnba on 2k sports and tonight we've got the las vegas aces playing against the chicago sky joined by brian benefittemi and tim schwartz i'm blake suniga and we are so glad you've joined us tonight [Applause] in the sky start out with the ball tremendous front courts in this one and you know over the last few seasons tim we have really expected more out of the forward positions yeah you know we have expected as you said more including a three-point shot all the best forwards have a three-point shot right now especially at the power forward position teams love having a stretch four and it's not just the shooting i mean we're seeing forwards become even more involved with play-making as well but to me i just think passing skills are paramount for a successful forward in today's game here's copper [Applause] and here's cambash wilson with it now guarded by dolson right side plumb pass to cam beige shoots over quickly cam beige with the bucket because of her ability to hit mid-range shots cam beige adds a different dimension to her team's spacing now here's parker [Applause] vander sloot outside dolson defended by campage down to five on the shot clock quigley can't get it to go well she's a player who with the wide open look will rarely miss ray that's good and i'm sensing this game really starting to swing their way yeah they're taking charge no doubt about it and that leads going to get more and more comfortable as they do i agree brian let's see how this one plays out now here's quigley pass to copper over makatri chicago again missing after the first three misses i thought they'd get one here but they just still can't connect and it's going to be two free throws drew contact on the shot it's a major component to her game free throws plumb nearly a 90 shooter from the line and first trip to the free throw line for her in this one [Applause] and the first one drops the first overall pick in 2017 there was a ton a hype around kelsey plum she's the all-time career and single season leader in points in college history [Applause] and that's good as she hits both shots [Applause] manor sloot with it they really want to find that igniter here that's right their offense is ground to a standstill maybe you need to suit up tim they need a spark and the layup's good off the glass big basket there the fifth time's the charm am i right and just under two and a half minutes elapsed here in the first and guys ali quigley has had just an amazing career in the wnba she didn't play much early on i mean ali was cut in 2011. she didn't even play in the 2012 season but she stayed locked in she kept working eventually winning the wnba sixth woman of the year in 2014 in 2015. now here's quigley [Applause] count it her second make in four attempts whoa the long bomb ali quickly has no fear to let it fly it's in her dna to shoot and looking at quigley's improvement over the years brian how has she been able to put it all together well blake she worked hard and never gave up which is easier said than done and after making a name for herself as a reserve her growth carried her to success as a starter after becoming an all-star in 2017 2018 and 2019 quigley has to be incredibly proud of her journey now here's quigley shot clock at six here's copper and it's chicago with another and we're just over three and a half minutes into the first here's gray here's wilson good work defensively by stephanie dolson the sky trail from deep alley quigley it's hauled in by angel mcautry on an open look like that she's just got a gift for making the weak coverage pay that's a surprising miss she's almost always deadly when she's that open even from way downtown now here's vandersloot wyatt so far offensively searching for her first points of the game pass to copper yes and it's alley quickly picking up the assist well that pick it worked like a charm a nice job taking it right to the tin for the layout bucket the experience makatri finding the right player a shrewd decision maker pass to vandersloot now quigley good on the shot that jumper it works from everywhere on the court quickly works tirelessly on her shooting and boy does it show now here's plum now cam beige [Applause] mccartry gray left side shoots over quickly and it's gray missing we don't see that too often plenty of space and she whiffs on an open jumper quickly gets the bucket i like the way she's taking advantage of what the defense is giving her and she's been a key contributor for them this quarter gray outside [Applause] the cadre outside ball's knocked loose six on the shot clock here's quigley chuck up two right there yeah she's played an important role in her offense today and really without her they might not have the lead right now now a timeout called by las vegas now about halfway through the season and a few teams are starting to slide uh what's the key to turning things around mid-season well from a coaching standpoint you got to be able to re-evaluate your off-season strategy and be honest with what you need to change if something really isn't working like you thought it would it might be time to go in a different direction and from a player's standpoint you have to remain mentally tough every season is going to have ups and downs but the the teams that last the teams that win draft by las vegas in 2019 jackie young came out of college early becoming the third junior to ever be taken with the top pick after candice parker and jewel lloyd so she gets them both they're doing well getting to the line and not just getting to the line but capitalizing too it's helped them build this early lead no doubt about it [Applause] pass to quigly down low stevens and so she draws the foul on the shot uh trips to the line to shoot two first personal yeah i love seeing biggs like stevens that shoot well from the free throw line and to me it's really just a testament to their quest for perfection they want to have all parts of their game be efficient take a break take a break two shots [Applause] and the first one at the line is good after a quality rookie year it's really no surprise that stevens was drafted sixth overall in the wnba draft [Applause] that's also good so she hits them both and two for one opportunity here if they want it and if i'm them if i'm in their seats i'm on the on the bench in the game i go for it pass to williams young come on score the basket her second of two attempts every time they get scored on during this run it seems like it's come from inside the paint buckle up on defense yeah it's time to collapse down and make them shoot jumpers now here's the shields still getting warmed up offensively no buckets yet in the game for her not to notice the difference in the passing of these two teams today yeah i mean when you look at the stats monitor there's a stark discrepancy when you look at the assist column and you see that difference as far as fluidity in their respective offenses too master quigly [Applause] nice d from aquana williams and confident play we're seeing out of them yeah the scoreboard tells the story and that one's good wilson of their last six baskets five have come on the interior this is smash mouth basketball guys yeah they're really imposing their will offensively and getting exactly the kind of for two reads the defense so well if you make a mistake in the pick and roll vander sloot will exploit it i think my favorite part of courtney vander sloot's game is her ability to facilitate she's led the league in assist multiple times and she's always looking for the open teammate she makes passes that other players simply can't pass to dolson to shields that one falls coming off stephanie dolson's feed most would have let that bump disrupt not the shields a supreme competitor and for how good of a distributor vander sloot is tim that's not the only thing she can do offensively absolutely not blake vander sloot also has a nice touch around the rim and can even extend her range to the three-point line all in all she's a quality scoring option anytime she's on the floor as well [Applause] pass to parker [Applause] here's copper she's covered by hamby copper no good great defense right there to prevent one of the best finishers in the league from converting in close and it's mccartry missing and it's the sky ball down by 12. diamond to shields from outside the shot comes out the aces go the other way with it [Applause] chelsea gray for three sinks the three-pointer a big-time offensive talent who can score points from all over the floor ray can punish defenses from deep here's vandersloot that one a little long to the paint ambi misses that's a surprise out of fouled on the way up two free throws for her well one thing about diamond de shields is that she comes from an athletic background her father was a professional baseball player and so is her brother while her mother was an all-american heptathlete in college selfishly i'm just happy to see that the shields ended up choosing basketball am i right [Applause] and she knocks down the first one well we know de shields comes from a family of athletes tim but how do you think that helped her growing up well she may have had an advantage with her ridiculous athletic ability but it's never easy to harness and develop your physical tools she took advantage of her opportunities and used them to grow her game nowadays her fluidity seems second nature whether it's in her body control or just overall game and while some players might shy away from the bright lights diamond the shield certainly does not remember her first wnba playoff game back in 2019 she scored 25 points it was the fifth most points the wnba player has ever scored in their postseason debut courtney vander sloot attacking that's in coming off an assist from candace parker after going scoreless in the first she's really found a way to turn it on here in the second quarter [Applause] so the whistle blows on the shot two free throws for the contact there [Applause] that one onto shields a strong offensive identity and knowledge of the game make mkachary one of the toughest covers in the league and she's got her first free throws of the night right here [Applause] [Applause] first free throw is good and speaking of the shields in the postseason does she have what it takes to lead a team all the way no doubt in my mind blake she has what we call the it factor she's a leader she's assertive and she really works for what she wants i think she's fueled by her shortcomings so i expect her to be even more dominant in future postseasons [Applause] manor salute with it six points for her parker williams covered by chelsea gray just dominant in this game she played a very smart game offensively looking for and finding gaps in the defense and always looking for the best shot possible yeah the way she played that first half well that's exactly what we're talking about when we talk about being efficient on offense well it's been a one-sided affair through the first two quarters but there is plenty of time to mount a comeback [Applause] outside plum pass to wilson [Applause] plum gray outside the three that one is good again she is six for eight from the floor with that basket what a night for gray she might be a point by trade but chelsea can pour it in when she looks for her own shot [Applause] now here's quigley gray defending wiggly good some defensive breakdowns happening now their last four buckets allowed have come from very close range and giving up these high percentage shot attempts it's not going to get it done they need to figure it out back to makatri fires top of the key oh no [Applause] wilson over hebert wilson no good unusual miss typically her skill on the inside trumps average defense count it fantastic pass he made that a very easy bucket with the setup [Applause] have certainly done their part today but she just hasn't gotten into the flow of this game and it's uh it's been tough to see well every team would like a player who can finish in the paint and ruthie hebert is a player who did just that in college a top 10 pick by chicago in 2020 hubert shot 65 for a career leading the country at 68 during her senior season [Applause] tucson [Applause] the first free throw is good and for hebert she had one of the great runs in college hoops history well the alaskan hebert set a record menser women's in college basketball history by making 33 straight shots yes 33 in a row she's a big reason why first overall pick sabrina and escu have got so many triple doubles helps to have an automatic post like ruthie hebert here's gray 15 points in the game young wilson with it [Applause] and lots of contact there missing the shot and we'll shoot two at the line it's gonna go on ruthie hebert well when you're guarding an inventive scorer like wilson it's always important to stay disciplined maybe next time defense shooting two and she knocks down the first one the talent asia wilson brings to her squad is exceptional a rookie of the year an all-star and really asia is only getting better [Applause] both good at the line now williams pass to the shields hebert williams with it west side stevens wilson with the steal four on three as they bring it up raquana williams for three here's gray called that time on the way up and that'll give her two chances at the free-throw line that one onto shields an extremely fluid offensive player defenses have to respect gray's ability to put the ball in the basket [Applause] shooting two [Applause] and the first one drops once chelsea gray entered the starting lineup for the sparks in 2017 she was rock solid in la from 2017 to 2019 gray started all 102 regular season games just so reliable at the point guard position and good on the second so she makes both and gray's consistency is so key for what has been a great stretch of basketball for arguably the league's premier franchise in the sparks well gray was top five in the wnba in minutes per game over that uh 2017-2019 time frame and really you don't just count on her to play in the games but also play well gray's been top five in total assists those three years now that's a quick bucket she's very solid in transition well she does love the chance to get out and run i'm called here the sky decide to talk it over it's been quite a game for chelsea gray look she's in a groove right now and i'm not really sure that you can stop her but they need to find ways to make her work for her shot [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] dances [Applause] back to the shields takes it to the teeth of the d and converts the layup there's a pattern taking shape they're working it inside and getting good shots from close range yeah four of our last five baskets have been of exactly that variety here's wilson she's guarded by stevens and hebert the shot is good allie quigley making the play they're consistently finding ways to get the ball not only inside but convert those opportunities no doubt what their offensive philosophy is today pound that ball inside i love it [Applause] williams with it working on stevens williams can't get it to go yeah her touch has deserted her this quarter nowhere to be found the shields can't hit glass hard to get that shot off with the size difference there that makes it a tough individual matchup for her especially down low in the post that's a big challenge she's taken on going in there it's two seconds separating the shot clock and the game clock [Music] pulls up on the elbow that one off the back iron and out and as we end the third quarter a double-digit deficit will make it tough tipped and a foul called on the shot got her on the way up that time so she'll shoot two well anytime you're drafted in the top three you enter the league with some high expectations the vander sloot was able to make an immediate impact making the wnba all-rookie team and earning all-star honors in her first season in 2011 showing that she was more than ready for her transition from college to the pros [Applause] first free throw is good and looking back at vander sloot's early years in the wnba tim how has she been able to sustain her success over the years well it's been a treat to watch blake courtney's developed into one of the league's best passers and continues to make those around her better plus her leadership ability has really grown over the years when she talks as the point to gray wilson with it make it 5 for 10 for her with that bucket a solid performance inside no they're rebounding it's been terrific they're putting together a great game aren't they strong performances throughout and they've just been strong on the glass and it sets a tone and it's the aces with the ball [Applause] makatri with it vander sloot covering and makatri gets it to go knifing what candace parker has done in this league how about 2013 when she got her first all-star game mvp 23 points 11 rebounds or even 2016 when parker helped the sparks win the wnba title and was named now copper just five on the clock vandersloot with it shoots over plum and once again offered by chicago pass to mkhautry lit they double his campage plumb and the layup is good terrific run to put this ball game away and now let's see just how much longer they keep that foot on the accelerator they got to keep it on the accelerator to the finish line three second difference between the shot clock and the game clock here's copper the putback controls the rebound and puts it back up and in it's not just the six score frame that allows parker to get those in it's her motor it's her desire it's her drive to win outside plum so it's the aces winning this one easily and this one was all over well before the final buzzer the fans were waiting for something to get excited about but they
