[Music] maybe in three two one what is up everybody welcome into an all new episode of the pack a day podcast I'm your host Andy Herman you can follow me on Twitter at Andy Herman NFL you can follow the podcast at paday podcast and I am joined by the one the only the Great and Powerful Perry Goldstein you can follow her on Twitter Perry Goldstein you can find her of course on the incredible packs with she said podcast with Magie Looney Perry great to have you back on chatting Packers after week one of the Packers crushing the Cleveland Browns and taking their soul in preseason week one how are you doing the Great and Powerful I love that intro that's that's awesome yes we had real football we watched real football Andy we're here we did it we made it as real as preseason football is yes we did I will still take it this is it's such a great time of year I love having like just preseason on in the background while I'm working now cuz it's like on NFL Network nonstop and I'm listening and Jack Hein gets a sack in a game and then like Kevin King picks off a pass and I'm like what is going on uh Tyler Goodson was in the game for the Colts and I'm like there's all these little Packer players that are all around the league and it's just very fun to kind of keep an eye on everything but it is a it is a great time of year there's no doubt about it yeah I was at a brewery Saturday night and it was like the I don't know they were showing highlights from all the all the games uh on one of the TVs and it was like Seattle and the Giants and all I was like oh look at the NFL being back this is so nice it really really is and it just it gets you in the mode for football all over again and it's like you get that one Taste of Packers Browns preseason and it's just like now I want the next one and the next one and like get me to Packers Eagles and I just yeah I'm I'm all there already I want to be all in I want I want that first kickoff but I'm willing to I'm willing to let the process play out not that I have a choice anyway but uh this is like I said it's always such an amazing time of year and I'm already getting excited for joint practices this week and a Packers Broncos game next Sunday even though the starter is not likely to play per mat laflor but either way I'm ready for it yeah that's all right they uh they did their thing uh on Saturday afternoon they showed up um they showed us hey remember us and now I'm fine with them being healthy until week won I didn't totally recognize it until I saw it today but I didn't realize that was Davian wix's One Snap in the entire game that he SC the touchdown one M you know 65 yard touchdown I'm going to call it a night see you guys later have a good one uh it was perfect and yeah again what more can you kind of want from that preseason game I'll let you start off obviously I've had the opportunity to kind of go through my takeaways from the game but now that you've had the chance to digest it a little bit what were sort of some of your main takeaways from this win over the Browns oh boy um my my gut reaction is an interesting one so I haven't listened to your episode so if I say anything that you have said um I apologize but my actual my first gut reaction was like I'm incredibly impressed with the Packers depth um I feel like this team is quite deep and that some of the cuts come cut down day are actually going to be very difficult that's how I felt watching this um I was like you know I know how we feel about the starters and like we just mentioned you know we we all know who's making it from like the wide receivers and Josh Jacobs and Etc but like the running back 34 competition a lot dicer than I thought the wide receiver six competition like a lot more difficult than I expected you know and um you know the safety rotation they actually now have like a pretty deep secondary going on and same with the defensive front so um you know you watch preseason not really for the starters right you watch preseason because you're like who are The Fringe roster guys that are potentially going to show up and make it and um who's kind of fighting for that spot and the Packers have had a kicker competition which the commentators you know talked about a ton on the broadcast and um I came away from the game uh actually having more questions really still about some of the guys I thought there and we'll get into it um this is part part of what we're going to talk about on the show but um some guys who really took that opportunity I thought and ran with it um quite literally in some cases yes um and I think we going to make that that decision for the coaching staff and the front office like a little bit more difficult now we we obviously have two more games um so some more opportunities for some of these guys but um I was I was very very impressed with the depth and um left me feeling really good about where this team is at and like the roster construction so far it's so funny because one of the reasons I love not exchanging notes ahead of time with whoever I'm talking to is because sometimes it will come as like an entire surprise like I had Paul brle on a couple weeks ago doing the stock report and I thought like man I think him and I are going to be on like the same page and he and I like we had different answers for almost everything the entire episode I'm like oh this is great and then today you come out I'm like I wonder what I'm legitimately interested like what Perry's key takeaway and my one thing that I had really in this other than again some of the stuff I talked about in the postgame episode but the one I wanted to talk about today quote depth and competition the Packers have overall that's the number one on my list that's the only thing on my list yeah and it's just so true and I think we saw that in the postgame the live postgame show I went through and I'm like I I think I numbered about 65 people that I think are really truly capable of making a 53 man roster at some point this season either in Green Bay or somewhere else and clearly they're going to get a lot of those guys back on the practice squad some of those guys might not ever get that opportunity to be on a 53 this year but I do think there's in the 60-ish range mid-60s of guys who can actually go and help a 53 man roster at some point this season especially once some injuries start to hit and that's a pretty incredible number and when you look at you know the roster and there's certainly as every roster has around the league it certainly has some weaknesses at certain points but the job that gy has done building the competition and the depth on this team it is really really impressive and I thought there were a lot of players like you said that did step up and made some of these competitions even more of a competition and I'm just really looking forward to seeing and we're gonna as you mentioned kind of talk about this as well over the next two weeks who really recognizes the opportunities that are out there because from maybe backup quarterback to number five six receiver number three four tight end basically spots number you know seven eight nine 10 on the offensive line um maybe a fifth Edge rusher or a sixth defensive tackle the backup linebacker spots and I think hopefully Cooper and Hopper can get back and start competing for those starting roles again the the end of the cornerback roster the end of the safety roster there is just so much o and of course kicker and long stapper even there is so much competition throughout the entirety of this roster and it is in such a great spot and you can tell I'll just add one thing really quick is what really one of the things that really stood out to me in this game I know I'm boring you right now because you're I'm sorry I'm kidding um so one of the things that stood out in this game was how well the receivers were blocking on the outside we you know Watson had one snpp had a really good block Reed had you know a snaper had a really good Block in like the three snaps that they played um and then Melton came in and blocked well and Heath came in and blocked well and Dubose came in and blocked well and it's just like those guys know if they want to see the field with all of and they want to make the team with all of these amazing wide receivers what's potentially going to differentiate them isn't necessarily the receiving because there's a lot of guys with receiving skills it's the guys that are going to do the dirty work and you could tell there was a huge you know um want to from these guys to go out and prove themselves I just love overall where the roster is at and how these guys are competing with one another it's true um yeah I mean it's funny that we had the same the same thoughts and takeaways because I also didn't I wasn't sure I like I said I didn't listen to your episode today on purpose because I wanted to have like a conversation um unbiased you know by by what you you said I usually for everyone listening do listen to Andy's uh you know YouTube about good cover good cover about practice and things I do I do I do um but and and again like it's preseason you take everything with a little bit of a grain of salt um they're not putting out you know 100% of their you know best defense their best offensive plays they're also still playing for the first time together for some of them um so there's going to be growing pains there but I think for the most part you know we're going to go through some excitements and some disappointments my list of who excited me and who I felt like stepped up is a lot longer than I feel like who was more of a disappointment um and that goes from starters through to some of those like depth guys who like you said are going to be fighting for the special team snaps Etc yeah no I I totally agree and I think that's what's really going to be again fun to sort of parse out as we do have the remainder of these joint practices and preseason games I I want to ask you then just a couple other kind of follow-up questions to the the Packers Browns game one what were what were you most excited about from that game oh boy there was a lot um I think first the rookies look really ready to play I think mostly from like the defensive side of the ball and I'd say I mean we all are excited about them right Evan Williams Javon Bullard Marsh on Lloyd unfortunately he had to leave with an injury um I just liked seeing them in there U I think they're going to be really impactful uh the second year players I thought had really a really good game namely on the defensive front I think Devonte Wyatt and lbn um or Devonte Wyatt's not second year player third year player you know what I mean like the young guys who you want to step up um I thought LVN was all over the place super super super excited also Grant Bose like where did he come from where did he come from this is what I mean like we're we're talking about this like group of wide receivers and you mentioned B Mountain you mentioned Malik Kei both who played last season both who I know you don't want to hear this um are potentially fighting for roster spots right they're not I don't think she wins least Malik is not and then you get a grant tuos who is like lighting it up in practice and in the preseason just making a little bit more difficult about like decisions they have to make so um I just think everyone is like for the most part making um making the most of their opportunities um it was great to see Jordan just like go in for his one series say hey remember me I just got paid this is why now I exit fully healthy goodbye you won't see me again until week one um I don't know I uh that's that those those were my my biggest takeaways nothing like too nothing nothing too crazy um they dominated I would say over the Browns but again like I don't take that too doesn't mean much too heartily because it's the preseason and the Browns didn't have like most of their starters playing either right and it just kept the momentum going which is what you like to see I thought it was a positive performance and I thought there were you know a ton of positive takeaways and very few negative takeaways I'll just add one in I've talked a lot about the Jordan love deep ball already that looks better that's what I'm most excited about but as I went back and started to watch the tape one other player that really caught my eye a little bit was Jacob Monk and there were definitely a couple of of hiccups here and there that he's going to have to learn from no question about it I also definitely thought earlier in the game when he played a little bit of better players he did have a little bit more of a struggle as to when later when some of the more you know fourth third fourth string guys came in he had a an easier time which is of course you know going to happen to some extent but there was a couple plays one in particular where he's lined up at Center and he snaps the ball and he gets a full Gap over before like anyone else is even out of their stance and just to be able to snap and get over there and then seal his guy and open up a lane for the running back like there's just some some really unique movement stuff that he's already doing that is pretty rare for that type of position and as a rookie for somebody who's still kind of learning the tricks of the trade um and for an offensive line that you know is going to need depth through the course of the Season I'm not saying you should compete you know yet with a Josh Myers I'm not saying he should be in that starting lineup conversation but there was a lot of really positive takeaways from it that I think are going to you know show down the road if he if and when he does get called upon yeah and like these live game rep Snaps are huge for guys like him who just need this time for development purposes right like you said he's not going to be vying for for a starting spot at least that's the goal that like you hope no one gets hurt you know if he is it's it's likely because someone got hurt and that's not a great thing or he just develops really quickly and that's like a wonderful surprise but like for him um and his future like these these are the the opportunities that he needs to make the most of totally agreed I'm gonna give you my just biggest winners and the players who we'll just say need to bounce back from this past week this week and then I'll let you go through yours or any different ones that you have um I had on my winnner list Grant Duos I think as you mentioned earlier I thought Joel Wilson had a really nice game as a tight end a few catches couple really nice blocks I don't know how much in the conversation he's going to get for that number three number four tight end with Ben Sims and Tyler Davis but he's probably a guy that's you know going in was maybe a practice squad guy maybe not a practice squad guy I think at minimum he is very firmly in that 16-man practice squad right now after his performance uh this past weekend and I think he can continue to go up and I don't think it's impossible he can get his name in that conversation he's going to have to continue to do it moving forward maybe even to a larger extent but I was impressed with Joel Wilson Emanuel Wilson the other Wilson of course um I think very clearly in that I'm sure we're going to talk about that a decent amount then I already mentioned about Jacob monk those are my biggest winners guys I think need a little bit of a bounceback from this past week B Melton obviously some of the drops and just not his best performance uh Ben Sims I thought he struggled a little bit as a blocker and just could couldn't get open too much down the field and then again when you have somebody like Joel Wilson who's having a really nice day that just kind of again balances itself to you know not a great day for Ben Sims I thought Royce Newman there were a couple nice blocks from reyce but uh false start penalty again and a couple blocks where he just was not able to contain his guy which again at this point year four um you're hoping for a little bit better and it just hasn't been the case so far uh so those would be the three guys I think need to bounce back but any other winners or bounceback guys that you were thinking of um I had the same list pretty much Grant Dubose Emanuel Wilson um I would put Evan Williams in there as well um he I just he was everywhere um they need to give him a different number though don't like 33 just on really you don't like the Micah hide Vibes no I don't know if it's just uh it's too soon but I don't like the 33 on him I agree with you on B Melton but I think maybe also like your expectations are higher just after after what bu Mountain was able to do last season um I don't know if I'd even I mean include a royce I just that's what expect at this point I don't I don't you oh I right um but I didn't enjoy the broadcast Seinfeld joke they did make a Seinfeld joke um so thank you for that broadcast um but I'm I think we're in lock step there do we forget what we're most disappointed from from the game I think we did um so just really quick was there anything you were disappointed about the game no I I thought it was a really nice show I mean sure like I think we just me mentioned some of the guys who maybe had the bounceback like poor for poor performance and I think they were like individually there but I don't think you could ask for much more they came out with the energy they scored first they held the lead uh there was never a point where I was like I didn't love what they put out there um no I mean it's what you what's what you want right from a preseason game they came out basically injury free besides the Marshon Lloyd hamstring um that's like all you want out of a preseason game so I have two things uh one is sort of weird but I was almost disappointed in the kickers and it's weird because they made all of their kicks but so here's why I'm disappointed I'm disappointed just because every time they went out there I'm still like H like I don't even like it just the this just the uneasy feeling of the Packers KCK going out there again they made everything I Greg Joseph actually I thought he did really well on both of his kicks Anders like squeaked a couple in and I know again they made everything but it was just like more of the feeling of like I just I don't like want to think about the kicker position again like can one of these guys just step up and be the guy so I don't have to worry about kicker anymore so it wasn't necessarily anything from the game but it was just sort of a weird feeling that I had just in general about the kicker position because like every Vibe about this team is like so immaculately good right now and that's the one where you're just like H I just I don't know there's just a weird kicker Vibe right now that's all it's that's all it is um the other thing and I'm going to I'm going to so box this for a second I I just forget we are one preseason game in and almost everything went amazing in that game and already the like some of the immediate reaction is we need to cut AJ Dylan and like get rid of this guy and get rid of that guy and it's just like can we have a second like we we don't we don't need to immediately jump to any conclusions and like I understand some of the Dylan angst and frustration from not being the biggest playmaker in years past and things like that but like he has had a really good training camp he got four carries in the game none of which had a great opportunity to really do anything um The Blocking was not good on any of them and it was to me not indicative of who Dylan is as a runner what he can potentially do for this team moving forward but it's immediately like ah pitchforks and everything it's just like let's just take a breath there's a lot of time left There's No 53 man roster cut down this week let's give it the rest of camp and the rest of preseason and let's focus on all the amazing positives that did take place in this game which was like 99% of the game so soapbox done it's not a big deal I get fans are going to Fan I'm not going to tell anyone how to fan but I was just like really we're gonna focus on some of this stuff already after one preseason game when things are really good I don't know that was my weird soapbox moment I didn't get that at all I mean I mean I at least from watching the game sure I like I think AJ and this this is Segway us a little bit into the remainder of the episode but AJ has probably the most to gain from the rest of the preseason to me um just like the opportunities that he has and the amount that's going to be handed to him with the preseason and now especially unfortunately with Marshon lyd probably not playing Josh Jacobs is not going to play in any of the rest of these preseason games like give the guy a sec to play the remainder of these two games um and show us what He is we know he's able to do um I also think AJ is so much more to your point than just like I mean what he got like four carries in this game or something like that I mean he didn't play like all that much um he is so trustworthy in pass protection and pass catching and he's not your every down back he never was and he's not going to be moving forward even if he all of a sudden like breaks out um I think there's a really big disconnect in like expectations for AJ Dylan going into this season versus like who he actually is so like let's just like relevel set around the player um and what he's going to be and he's he is a role player um right I mean that that's that's that's what I expect from him he's going to come in and spot Duty um to me he's still he's running back three that that's that's kind of where he's gonna slot in um and that's fine that's perfectly fine um and I think when push comes to shove if anything were to happen to any of the other guys in that room I would trust and I know the coaching staff would trust him in the back field probably over any of the other guys on the practice squad and that like that's that's all you want um not to mention he has ball security um as one of the things that I would put as a notch as a pro um on his list so let's just like take a deep breath I think thing that's kind of my thing as well and I'm not even willing to say like who should or shouldn't at this point or I get Emanuel Wilson at a really nice game and if people like Wilson more than Dylan that's F I get it I understand it I'm just saying like let's let's just chill after one game and let's see what the rest of preseason brings because there's a lot of time left and we don't you know trying to get uh overly critical of um anyone in a a single preseason game is just like that's not how decisions are made in the NFL it's it's based on a variety of different factors and um you know the other thing too is yes Wilson looked good in this game but now you have the potential of you know we're not sure what this hamstring injury is going to bring for Marshon Lloyd and Lloyd hasn't had the opportunity to really get too ingrained in this offense because of the multiple injuries that he's had so far so like I don't know that he you know even if he's ready to go week one and he's back in time like I don't know that he's going to be that guy that just immediately jumps into the number two spot and again we can have the conversation if that should be Wilson or Dylan whatever but like they're going to need these backs and they'll they'll ultimately make the decision that they think is best and um whatever they decide I think from those you know guys whether it is Wilson or Dylan whatever I'm cool with but I just think there's a long way to go and we have a lot of time to to see what these guys can do to make that decision yeah and it doesn't have to be in or it can probably and probably will be an end I mean yeah I I don't know the way the construction will go um and this obviously will depend on a multitude of factors by by the time we get to this point and this is not a roster cutdown Episode by any means but it's very possible that to your point there's injuries there's they they decide priority wise even let's just say this that they want both AJ Dylan and Emanuel Wilson on the roster given where the makeup is and what Matt lur wants to do with his offense and the way that they value the running back rotation etc etc um so we don't even need to do the compare and contrast thing and um pit the two backs against one another um it's very possible that both make the roster and both are very needed uh going into the season and there can be a lot of injury issues there could be trades like we don't know what's going to happen between now and cut down day so there's a lot of time to sort of figure all of that out and see what Green Bay ultimately wants to do all right let's jump into kind of our main Croc of this topic and I'll I'll let you kind of go first here we're going to start with who has the most to gain the remainder of the preseason and then who has the most to lose the remainder of the preseason so I will let you start who has the most to gain in the remainder of this preseason um the first name on my list we've already talked about him so sorry for the repeat but Grant de bose baby Grant de bose let's go like you know he basically red shirted his first season was absolutely not talked about whatsoever but there is a spot in that wide receiver room up for grabs um um for sure for sure mly Keith is not a lock um and if you can block and you can pass catch you can make this roster and he I think is very much making a name for himself he looked great in this game I've seen his name all over the place from practice um he's still young right he was he was a draft pick so I think it's very possible that if he has a great rest of this preseason and he's not going to have the connection with love obviously if love is not playing um but it doesn't matter if he continues to stack preseason games like he did against the Browns he has a very good chance of making this team yeah I'm with you he was definitely on my list as well I think the cool thing with Duo is and you know he's got a ways to go there's actually a play at the end of this game where he gets jammed at the line of scrimmage late in the fourth quarter and just like gets jammed into Oblivion like literally just like it's like three yards behind the line of scrimmage and just can't get off it whatsoever there's some things that he needs to continue to improve upon but like I think he can work his way up all the way to number five on this receiver list especially with where you know B Melton and you everyone knows I'm a huge B Melton guy I think he still has a ton of potential but I think Duos can get himself active he's a really good blocker uh he can provide some special teams value in fact some of my favorite plays for Duos in this game were actually as a blocker not just some of the receiving stuff that he was doing so I think he has the potential and I think if you do need him you know I don't know that you necessarily want him number one two three but if all of a sudden you end up in a situation where maybe Bo Melton and one of your other guys is out and Dubose needs to go in and be that number four guy this year and you know just kind of spell the other three from time to time I don't think you have any concerns with it whatsoever that's a pretty big step for him and I'm really excited to see what he can do the remainder of the preseason yeah absolutely I'm going to go very appropriately after uh previous rant I'm going to go with Emanuel Wilson like I think he absolutely has so much to gain and I think we forget like this is a guy who started to get carries towards the end of last year and was active in the playoff games and got carries in the playoff games like they they legitimately started to trust him more at the end of last year so I think while they did go and get Josh Jacobs I you know that one is basically a like for like for Aaron Jones trade in that situation but while they do go get Marshon Lloyd as well and bring Dylan back you know this is a player that they again did start to really trust at the end of last year and now he comes out he has had more big runs in training camp than any other running back on the roster so far and he goes out and has a really great first preseason game and I loved how many runs that he had great contact balance in in this game and continued to stay upright and just fight for extra yards um and then of course he had that great play where he cut a couple times and Michael Pratt's leading the the charge as a blocker and he gets 20 plus yards and we saw last year he has the ability to take the 80 yard to the house as well certainly the the pass Pro the receiving out of the back field there's things that he's going to also have to continue to improve but he he still has a lot to gain and maybe really get himself in that running back conversation and rotation maybe even yeah I mean I obviously agree with you um because of everything we've talked about but he was number two on my list right after Grant depose um I do think that we forgot to your point that he was getting regular season looks playoff looks until he got hurt um the Packers valued him for sure and we know that matur values the running back rotation it is a really really tough on yourbody um position you never know what can happen and they are going to fill that room um he is not your every down back they have one that's why they they went and grabbed Josh Jacobs so to your point again like he's not going to be able to do everything I don't think they're going to ask him or expect him to do everything but he can be dangerous I think he's got a lot of like really fun traits um that he will have to develop and clean up but he can sneak onto this roster for sure like I can I I see a world where he sneaks onto this roster and we say this every year and so I I do like tamper Tamp this down but you know not a guy I think you want to cut in Camp and like kind of hope you sneak him onto the practice squad for like he's he's seen Real playing time yeah I think that that could easily be the case who's next on your list um it was AJ Dylan but we've already had the conversation about the running back so I'll skip ahead and just say um Evan Williams I think the the safy two spot next to Xavier mcken is still very much up for grabs um I don't think the expectation going into the season is that is Javon Bard I think it's high you know given he started um and that his draft pedigree signals it but by no means is it a shoe in and they are going to make every safety including um Anthony Johnson Jr who's probably also like well within that conversation and should be on this list as well um I think all of the safeties outside of I had that Williams buard and Anthony Johnson Jr all have lot you can put the group to be honest but I I think just the way that Evan William played in this game like puts him kind of at the top of me saying like signaling to me like huh okay like he went out there and played his ass off and um saying hey like you know don't don't forget about me um I know that you took another guy ahead of me in this draft and everyone kind of maybe thinks that he's going to be the one who's starting ahead of me but like not so fast um but I think the safety group as a whole are the ones who have the most to gain because it's a position that's very much up for grabs going into the season still yeah no very well said I had all three of them Williams berer and Anthony Johnson Jr with a lot to gain and I think all of them can gain playing time still and I think that's what makes that competition so unique I'm going to give you one more on the who to gain and the uh uh rest of preseason and then I'll finish it and then we'll go to the other side okay um there's a there's a ton um but I'm gonna go with kayin King love it love it I am super impressed with him just the way he plays and his tenacity and his speed and his willingness to go in on the Run game and I mean just the like his whole story is easy to root for but it's a really strong cornerback group we kind of know who the starters are but that doesn't necessarily mean that some of the death guys aren't going to get playing time and I think he's gotten a little bit forgotten about in the conversation and I thought he had a really nice game um and I think he has like a real shot of getting snaps um come come the regular season so he's like kind of one to watch of like on the rise in my in my eyes I'm so glad you brought him up I actually did not have him on my list and it was a mistake to not have him on there and I I'm kind of mad at myself that I didn't think of it but now he's been a really impressive player I think there's a lot of upside there and I think he can get himself in the conversation for maybe being one of those guys off the bench if they do in fact need some depth I think they've got their starting three you know we'll see if Bullard and you know maybe some of the other guys can get themselves in the slot conversation as well but um you know after that you Valentine once he comes back is probably going to be the first guy but then then it becomes all right kayin King is it gonna be Cory Balentine Robert relle there's a lot more up for grabs there and I think Kalin King is very firmly entrenched in that conversation and some good play in the remainder of of preseason and he can really get his name and like do we have to get this guy in the field more like is there a like do we have to get him in certain packages because he's playing well enough so I do think he definitely has plenty to gain includ not only a roster spot but maybe even getting more into the active 48 and then maybe even some playing time from there I'm gonna I'm gonna pair my who has the most to gain with who has the most to lose the remainder of this preseason and I'm just going any offensive lineman numbered seven to the end of the list because we know the six guys right once Jordan Morgan gets back I think he probably starts at Right Guard although Shawn Ryan had a really nice performance and then you've got Shan Ryan probably being that six guy right off the bench I I don't think there's any chance that Jacob monk doesn't make the team but I do think Jacob monk could slot anywhere between seven and maybe 10 on the roster depending on how everything else goes and that would be the difference between being active on game day and potentially being you know inactive on game day and then literally everyone else to a T I think can go from literally making it to the seventh guy and maybe even like the swing tackle for some of those guys to not even making the roster and or the practice squad like I think that is how wide this battle is and you could almost convince me of just about any combination of these guys and i' be like yeah I could I could understand that I could see that and from Travis Glover to Luke Tuda to Andre Dillard to Royce Newman to you know we talked about Jacob monk like lasus Smith Donovan Jennings if he can get back healthy like I think this is a huge massive competition between all of these guys and I'm super intrigued to see how it is going to play out and who going to go and say that is my job you are not taking it from me and I'm going to go step up in a major way and make sure that I make this roster and maybe again be the seventh guy off the bench and active on every game day and again the guys that don't could end up ultimately not being on the the 69 man roster in any capacity so that they have a lot to gain and they have a lot to lose and it could go in a variety of different directions yep I also just had the offensive line um because because to to all of your points I mean I I think there's guys who have more to lose than the rest right like your guys who've had who've either been on the team for many years and haven't proven themselves yet so your guys like Royce Newman um your guys who are on their last legs like I think Andre Dillard is like I mean he could be cut at the end of the seon at before the season starts and I'd be like sure I mean I wouldn't surprise me right to your point it's like make the team not make the team I don't know um they're in a they're they're just in a really interesting spot with this line [Music] um the depth is there but it's not there and who they choose to keep or not keep is going to have like major implications for this season um yeah I I think you said it perfectly but the where they the the rest of this preseason is going to be huge for like you said guys seven through through 10 11 and I think a lot of those guys are capable of stepping up and playing better football and really grabbing one of those spots but there's also guys like Caleb Jones year in year three Luke Tuda you're in year three um you know Andre Dillard you have been a journeyman now these last two years you're on a vet minimum with no guarantees like who who wants it who's going to step up I do think there's Talent there but you need to see consistency and you can tell with some of the rotations they're wanting to see it and somebody has the ability to step up and grab it and I don't think anyone really has as of yet although like I said Jacob mon did have a very nice week one of preseason all right H your next one who has the most to lose oh boy um I think on the flip side of like Grant too having a great game the B mountains the samori Tay the Malik Heath have the most to lose if someone like that jumps them yep right uh I think this is likely the end of the road for a sori Tay in the same it's the same conversation as like a a Roy stomer the guys who have been on who've clung on to the team for a number of Seasons who haven't had who haven't shown kind of why they should be on the team like what is your role and contribution going into this 2024 season because when you have to my original point at the start of the top of the show this team is deep and when you're running back three four when you're wide receiver six when your safety four can when your cornerback five could potentially like legitimately see real playing time and you're fighting for a roster spot like I don't know if I'm the coaching staff I'm asking like what is your role here what are you what are you adding to the team other than special teams and if the answer if there's if there's a question mark there you're probably not making the team unfortunately um you can answer the question you can answer that question for bu melon and Malik Keith right Malik Keith is a great blocker and he's a gunner on special teams B Mountain had a wonderful season last season he didn't have a great preseason game I don't think it's like the end of the world for him right for samori T it's a big question mark so like yes boml and M Le Keith will have to have better preseason for the rest of this preseason but like for a guy like soru Ray um I don't know he probably has the most to lose especially when a grant toos is is going to jump him yeah I feel kind of bad but I've already kind of put t on the like it is going to be really difficult for him to make the roster sort of standpoint I I think there's still may you know maybe a roundabout way if he goes out and kills it but I just think right now Malik Keith and Grant BOS are probably the ones and and B Melton are the ones that are really fighting for those final two spots and I I would be pretty surprised if almost anyone not named one of those three gets to the to the bottom of the receiver roster yeah but the bottom of the receiver roster is is still going to be to me it's like they it's still going to be tough I think like there could be a cut at the end of the season that surprises people yeah I had Ethan Melton on my list as well because for that very reason and like for Melton like I said I think he I still be very surprised if he doesn't make the team but the reason he has the most to lose is because I thought he really came into this training camp in preseason being like there's no way there's no way that guy doesn't make the team and then you go out and have a performance and it just raises like the all right is he a lock like I think he's still a lock but is he really a lock um and you just don't want to H like you don't want to raise any of those red flags if you're bow Melton you were safe like you don't want to get more towards the bubble you want to go closer to Safe of and pushing some of the guys ahead of you not in the opposite direction that first game was like an opposite direction one and I think that's why he potentially has the most to lose because he would have been pretty darn close to that lock list for me and like I said I still think he's probably close to it but again you just start asking some questions when you have a game like that yep 100% I have I have one uh one more and then I'll give you one more uh as well so you mentioned kayn King as one of the ones on your most to gain I kind of Cory Balentine is one of the ones that I think might have the most to lose and I just kind of look at it I think he's at a little bit of a tough Camp so far I really liked what he did a season ago and given opportunities I think he's got some special teams ability and based on his contract and the guarantees that they gave him I think it's more likely than not that he's on the team but if you told me that they kept o jier Nixon and then Valentine kayn King and like a Robert relle would I be extremely shocked especially if rell's who I think is just the better special teams guy I wouldn't be totally surprised in that situation so again I I think he probably is still more on that likely to make it list than not but when kin King is playing well and Robert Melle even had a pretty nice game in that week1 preseason I just think he's somebody that is at least got to be a little bit cautious the remainder of the preseason to make sure he goes out and maybe puts a couple good performances out there so that he doesn't raise that question of should he be one of the 53 or not yeah they're really deep on in the secondary so again it's uh if you he's kind of in that like weird no man's land where like but when he played last season when he had to play he I thought he stepped up for sure like when he had to play real snaps you know it wasn't what you wanted to have him out there in real snaps I thought he really like stepped up but now you filled out that roster with the guys you want to be playing those snaps and then to your point you've got the the teamers and he's kind of left in that no man's land unfortunately no I totally agree all right who's your last one um I'd say this and I still I thought he actually he had a very good game so I feel a little weird about this one so we can talk about it um because I still think that they will roster three quarterbacks maybe I was gonna guess Sean Clifford I was gonna guess I'm like based on what you're saying I think you're gonna go Sean Clifford here but I think just like based on the exercise like Sean Clifford and again I say that because he had a he had a nice game like yep over a 100 yards multiple scoring drives like obviously some of them were were field goals um but I think they really like Michael Pratt and that's not to say like this is a this is you are buying for to be the backup let's not get it twisted um but if Michael Bratt starts to develop and have stack nice preseason games and put some things together in in at practice do how much do they love Sean Clifford um I don't know uh I think it's much more of a competition than I initially expected it to be um you can tell me what you think because you've obviously seen them a little bit more at at Camp because you're there but I think he has the most to lose if Michael Pratt has a really good preseason I had him on my list as well I think you're right and it's just because he's he's right now he's the number two QB he can't gain anything like he can't get to I mean knock on wood he can't get to number one right so there's nothing to gain other than staying in the position that he was going into the off season and Michael Pratt's done some really nice things I think he's still a ways away from a Playbook standpoint as Adam stovich and and Matt laflor will eagerly tell you but Pratt's done some really nice things and I don't even necessarily know that it has as much to do with Michael Pratt as it just does where if sea Clifford comes out and has two very bad preseason games the next two weeks you have to question of like can we go into the season with him as your number two and there will be teams the New England Patriots have four quarterbacks on their roster we know that Drake May is not going anywhere jacobe Brett's not going anywhere Joe Milton's not going anywhere which means that a bayy zappy would be available if you wanted to make a move like that Taylor hinei in Atlanta is g to be stuck as the number three guy you've got Michael Pennock and Kurt Cousins as your top two in Atlanta and now hinei has you know he's a he's a true number two quarterback in this league and he's sitting at number three some team could call and be like we would like to make him the number two there are some other teams that are out there that have a PJ Walker in Seattle they've got Gino Smith they've got Sam Howell um he looked good in his first preseason week I'm not necessarily saying that anyone's going to be like just you over the moon with any of these major trades but if you do get to the point where you don't think Sean Clifford is the guy like you at least have to call around and be like what's available out there and is there a better opportunity to grab a backup quarterback than what's on the roster right now because if bayy zappy in a you know if if in a four- game absence Sean Clifford goes one and three or 0 and four in a bayy zappy or a Taylor hinei can go two and two that could be the difference between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs for this team so I you know I'm with you I think he has certainly you know some to gain where he can just keep keep his spot and show that he's capable of being the number two guy in Green Bay but that's kind of where he is now like I said there's nothing better he can do and the the worst case is you know Green Bay says no we can't have this guy's our backup and clearly Michael Pratt's going to be our developmental guy yeah because he absolutely is the developmental guy and it's to your point it's not the guy that I think I don't think that all of a sudden Michael Pratt is your two and if God forbid something happens that's who you want out there but I also don't think that Sean Clifford is the guy who you want to lead this team in any kind of extended absence so it defin it leaves some questions and some holes and if you're bringing in somebody new they're keeping Michael Pratt yeah no yeah we're on the same page we're unlock that yeah um and it it was it was hard for me to like I said to put him on the list because he actually he looked fine but it was preseason yeah no I thought it was a good game from him I thought he I thought he showed for the most part what he needed to show a couple plays that were a little bit behind his wide receivers but Melton could have come up with a couple of those and three of his incompletions one was a spike to her throws out of bounds that were on purpose to just waste some time so like his completion percentage actually would have been better I thought he overall had a solid game I didn't have any issues with the way that he played but like I said I still think he has a lot to lose in these next two preseason games if he does not perform at the level that he did or better than what he did in this past game yeah 100% all right Perry amazing amazing stuff as always any final thoughts before we get out of a oh boy um lot of preas and football left for those of you freaking out about some of the players that you love not performing well um but just nice to see you know the transition from practice to like real live game reps and uh it's a big jump especially for some of the guys who haven't had like real NFL playing time yet um first time seeing Jeff Halley's defense we didn't even touch on that I mean it looked pretty vanilla so it's fine preseason um but just great to see real football and um we're we're getting we're getting real close to that week one yeah my final thought is just I really love where this team is at I'm so excited about him I can't wait for this season and doesn't necessarily mean they're going to go and tear it up I I still think there's going to be some things that they definitely need to work through there's going to be adversity but I'm excited to see how this team handles a you know difficult uh I think schedule and a really fun you know stretch of games from 1 to 17 and where things end up at the end and hopefully a really fun playoff run at the end of it would be very nice as well Perry where can we find all of your incredible work
