Adam Schefter BREAKING: Ja'Marr Chase ask Bengals a bigger Justin Jefferson's deal or not play

Jamar Chase says it'll be a game time decision for the Bengals opener against the Patriots on Sunday and Chase says that decision is his alone he's been seeking a contract extension his current deal runs to the end of next season but the new deals for CD lamb and Justin Jefferson have created a vastly different market for Premier receivers you know it's been pretty aggravating for the most part but um I try not to let my feelings get in the way bringing it to work and uh affecting the guys that's practicing I didn't ask for a contract or demand a contract this year it was told by the staff prior to the offseason right before Camp is it true that the reports that you want one penny more than Justin Jefferson if I want to beat Justin I'm going to beat the out of Justin not by a penny brother so I want to say we're off a little bit but you know it's it's in reach um but we'll see by game day I'm confident it'll get done you know I know I know my worth and I'm sure they know my worth too so I mean that's that's easy and simple but of course there's plenty more that goes into a player missing a game there also the fantasy angle of all of this and to talk about that we bring in our Dave Richard to uh break this all down for the record I would take one cent more than Justin Jefferson I said that too I was like look if you just want to give me $1 million like I'm good there line me up out there in Cincinnati um Dave but in all seriousness here before we kind of dive into the Jamar Chase side of this I do want to talk about t Higgins because it's one thing to not have Jamar chase out there but when you don't have Jamar and T Higgins both what are fantasy owners looking to do with the situation in Cincinnati it's real simple if you've got T Higgins on your team you're benching him you're not going to be able to count on him playing this week and certainly you're going to go and you're going to look for a replacement off the waiver wire and we can talk about that but without him there we've seen this Bengals story before and it's actually great there were two games last year that Joe burough started and finished that's an important designation along with Jamar Chase on the field in both games Joe burrow had north of 20 fantasy points how far north did he get he had 23.9 against Houston he had 29.4 against Arizona and that's a crummy Arizona defense that he had what did Jamar Chase do in those games Haley Chase against Houston 23.4 PPR points and against Arizona everybody that had Jamar Chase remembers this one 52.2 PPR points and it's not just last year the year before Jamar Chase had a game with almost 30 PPR points with t Higgins not on the field Joe burrow was north of 20 fantasy points himself so it's really simple Jamar chase you move him up he's a top five fantasy wide receiver Joe burrow man you can just lick your lips on that one he's a good low-end starter even without T Higgins on the field there's a connection everyone knows about between burrow and Chase they're going to end up doing just fine against New England whose defense I'm not sold on so I'm going to play devil's advocate here because I'm looking at the Bengals uh depth chart here when it comes to wide receivers there's a lot of names on here that I don't recognize so I can imagine who do you want to know about I'll tell you just some replace particularly with Joe burrow because to your point you know him and having that connection with Chase Devil's Advocate if both of his top targets aren't on the field here what is Joe burrow do I mean forget about what Joe burrow does you know as a fantasy manager what you're going to do you're gonna hit the waiver wire and find another quarterback because Joe burrow and any wide receiver or any quarterback rather without his top two wide receivers you can't expect him to put up good points so Joe burrow is going to be on the bench if there's no Jamar Chase we'll know about that come Sunday you're going to have pay attention it does it does beg the question what if your quarterbacks are Joe burrow and Jordan love who do you start do you take the safe way with Jordan love I think you should and that's why I move Joe burrow behind Jordan love of course love playing on Friday burrow is going to play on Sunday I I I think in in that situation maybe Justin Fields is who you go for if he's the starter for Pittsburgh massive can of worms massive yeah but at least he's going to play at least have his number one receiver and at least he's going to run whereas Joe B will not run that much is going to be throwing you asked about the receivers that they'll have we're talking about Mike giki at tight end probably playing a bigger role we're looking at maybe Germaine Burton getting pushed onto the field a little bit sooner than he should Andre osas kind of an interesting name his name actually starts with an eye when you go to look him up and put him on your fantasy team as his F uses a typewriter to get him on their fantasy team but the bottom line is that he's someone that could play on the outside not nearly as explosive as T Higgins but somebody who could be good for four or five catches a game 50 60 yards something like that low-end option probably more of a desperation option I would look for a wide receiver not on the Bengals to replace a Bengal in week number one so uh let's take it one step further here just some general Replacements that you can grab on the waiver wire when it comes to T Higgins and Jamar Chase I'm just going to give you some names Haley and these are players that are available in under 50% of CBS Sports League I should say over 50% of CBS sports leagues the first name that stands out to me Rasheed Shahed in New Orleans that's a great match up against Carolina we know that he's had a good camp he could be the number two receiver there Darnell Mooney for the Falcons kind of a boomer bus play but at this point you're desperate for someone that's going to get you points period and he's somebody that can absolutely do that other names that aren't as exciting Davian Wicks with the Packers you'd have to make that call on Friday um de Mario Douglas in full PPR for the Patriots look it's it's not a great list I'm literally reading off my monitor to go started taking notes to go and see yeah like you're not going to feel so good about it but nice thing about it it's week one you've got to have somebody on your bench that you can go to at wide receiver to replace T Higgins and hopefully not to replace Jamar Chase yeah fingers crossed he is back out there on that field one penny is all he's asking for actually it's not what he's asking for it's what in CBS Sports NFL writer Tyler Sullivan and Tyler how close do you think they really are to getting this done and do you think that we see a deal come before kickoff on Sunday yeah well we'll take chase at his word and say that they're relatively close I don't think that he would say that and that not be the case now obviously there's going to be some posturing there he knows he holds the cards when he's in front of the media like that and he can sway certain things with his comments so you have to take it a little bit with a grant of itself but I ultimately do think that they are relatively close on a deal even reference that it's been like six or seven months of negotiations going back and forth and you have to do you have to realize that this is a deal that's going to set the market he's he's joking around there talking about going a penny over Jamar Chase but it is going over Justin Jefferson but this is going to be a historic Market setting contract he's that talented he's hitting the market at the right time in terms of wanting this contract extension now the question is how does this go in terms of Sunday and whether or not he plays I I do think that he ultimately ends up suiting up but whether or not he's signed to a deal or not I think kind of depends on whether how much you see him in this game he said limited possibly obviously there's going to be some ramping up periods there as well in terms of getting is conditioning down he says he's 100% healthy but healthy and being conditioned to playing an NFL football game are two totally different things absolutely and to that point you know he's been holding in hasn't been practicing so we'll see how ready he is for game shape as of course Jamar Chase listed as questionable but meanwhile his counterpart T Higgins he's doubtful for Sunday's matchup against New England with a hamstring injury what could this Bengals offense look like potentially without t or Jamar yeah I know right it's it's crazy this team is supposedly a Super Bowl contender now you're going to be down your top two white outs potentially and so this is going to be an interesting thing here for Joe burrow to kind of handle now obviously Higgins is doubtful for this game due to that hamstring injury we have the contract negotiations going on with Jamar Chase my gut says that chase plays so the offense should still move relatively smoothly I know that we're talking about conditioning but in terms of the Rapport we know that Joe burrow and Chase have a rapport like nobody else in the NFL because their days at LSU now the question is what else does this Bengals offense spring and so is it Andre yosvi and the second wide receiver a guy that I think is actually going to have a pretty good year kind of taking over that slot roll left by Tyler Boyd could Mike Kiki the tight end get an increased workload in the passing game and of course in the backfield you have Zach Moss who they brought in this off season and a guy in Chase Brown who they're very high on having a good summer so there are still Playmakers on this offense to put up points and again this team that they're playing this weekend the New England Patriots this is the largest spread in the NFL this is not expected to be close whether it's with Higgins or without Higgins or honestly even without Chase in this game they're not a particularly good football team the Patriots are this season so you'd love to have everybody there but I think this is one of those opponents where you don't NE yeah this is an absolutely bizarre situation that Jamar Chase is 100% healthy he's apparently put himself on the injured list even though he's not injured and made himself a game time decision uh so no one in Cincinnati knows what's going to happen here and I thought during his interview today that one of the most interesting things he said is that the Bengals approached him about extending a contract this wasn't him going to them and demanding hey look you need to give me an extension or I'm not going to play this year so it feels like once that happened once the Bengals open the door on these negotiations that Jamar Chase just assumed a deal was going to get done and now that it hasn't uh time is running out here there's less than 48 hours until the Bengals kick off and he seems pretty serious about the fact that he might not go out there if a contract is not done so this really is a bizarre situation I mean it's something where you just got to get it done you losen the purse strings I know the Bengals have a history of being Frugal which I'm sure Brinson will bring up happily uh but there's no reason to have this drama you have the T Higgins injury now the hamstring thing you're worrying about you need to have someone out there to help Joe burrow uh so just get the deal done with Jamar jaase I think I nearly got caught Googling John breech IMDb fast in the Furious 5 get that credit up and like and post it before we get get out of here I I I think there's a lot of cause for concern you know it's going to be really interesting to see what happens with this this particular game because the Bengals are the biggest favorite on the board they're going to be picked by 40 plus percent of Survivor leagues to beat the Patriots who look like a terrible football team but Jamar Chase has said he's gonna be limited and T Higgins I mean correct me if I'm wrong breach I I don't actually remember T Higgins getting hurt all just all a sudden this guy who's mad about his franchise tag probably not thrilled that Jamar Chase can't get a deal is is injured as well so you it just it feels very ominous for the Bengals you know they finally for the first time since they get Joe burrow in the draft go into the season where he's not either a rookie or injured coming into the year and they've got all this drama with these two good wide receivers one who was a first round pick and one who was an early second round pick like you got Joe burrow you gave him his bag get pay his receivers I know that it's not easy but you can get 10% private Equity next year go out and get sky and Chile to fund you and to pay these wide receivers do whatever you have to do you cannot let Jamar Chase come into the season a Super Bowl potential Super Bowl season unhappy it's just very I don't know man cut the check if I'm Mike Brown all right guys certainly appreciate the interesting with Chase of course a couple years left on his deal or thanks to Will bson and John Bree guys oh he's got it up ready on hand in the bookshelf I knew it was somewhere it's got to be close got to keep close maybe not one penny is satisfactory when it comes to Jamar Chase but here's kind of the general area that he's looking at in in terms of getting paid here we know just the Jefferson is the highest paid wide receiver in terms of average annual value at $35 million CD lamb coming in close behind we finally got that deal done in Dallas at 34 and remember Aman Ros Brown was the one who kind
